Starting Pitcher Player Notes
For The Last 15 Days
Josh Johnson, SP, SDP12/23/2014 10:57:00 AM
Description: Padres starter Josh Johnson signed a one-year deal with the club, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.
Insight: Johnson is rehabbing from a second Tommy John surgery and isn't likely to be ready until around June. He hasn't pitched since 2013 and he's a longshot, to say the least, to have any fantasy value in 2015.
Nathan Eovaldi, SP, NYY12/19/2014 4:58:00 PM
Description: Newly-acquired starter Nathan Eovaldi will not be a great option during 2015.
Insight: He was the main piece of the deal the Yankees got in return for Martin Prado. However, after a record of 6-14 and a 4.37 ERA last season, there is little reason to believe Eovaldi will improve by pitching in the AL East.
Edinson Volquez, SP, PIT12/17/2014 6:02:00 PM
Description: Starter Edinson Volquez has agreed to a two-year, $20 million contract with the Kansas City Royals according to CBS Sports reporter Jon Heyman.
Insight: Volquez had a great bounce back year with a 3.04 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and nearly twice as many strikeouts as walks over 192 2/3 innings in 2014 with the Pirates. Volquez, however, was one of the worst pitchers in the league in 2013, and Pittsburgh has become a pitcher's heaven, where down-and-out pitchers revitalize their careers. Francisco Liriano and A.J. Burnett were the first to do that with the Pirates and now Volquez. Now let's see if Volquez can be better than Burnett was after he left Pittsburgh.
Dan Haren, SP, MIA12/11/2014 3:01:00 PM
Description: Dan Haren could enjoy throwing in pitcher-friendly Miami Park, but may retire instead of reporting.
Insight: Haren was 13-11 with a 4.02 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. There is a lot of pitching talent on Miami, particularly if Jose Fernandez comes back and Haren doesn't have a guaranteed spot in the rotation.
Alfredo Simon, SP, DET12/11/2014 2:46:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati's All-Star pitcher Alfredo Simon has been traded to Detroit.
Insight: Simon struggled down the stretch, but finished 15-10 with a 3.44 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. Id the "first-half guy" shows up (12-3, 2.70 ERA) its a good deal, but if the post-break guy is in a Tigers uniform he won't be fantasy worthy.
Mat Latos, SP, MIA12/11/2014 2:43:00 PM
Description: The Cincinnati Reds have traded starter Mat Latos to the Miami Marlins.
Insight: Latos was 5-5 with a 3.25 ERA and a 1.153 WHIP in 16 starts this season, but heads to a very pitcher-friendly Marlins Park and could be an undervalued selection this spring.
Rick Porcello, SP, BOS12/11/2014 2:37:00 PM
Description: Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello has been traded to the Boston Red Sox in amulti-player deal involving Yoenis Cespedes.
Insight: After losing the Jon Lester sweepstakes, the Red Sox made a big move to bring Porcello in. he was solid last season going 15-13 with a 3.43 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. He's a career 2-1 in Fenway, but with an ugly 6.41 ERA and 1.475 WHIP, so be careful in expecting too much from him.
Wade Miley, SP, ARI12/10/2014 10:10:00 PM
Description: The Boston Red Sox have traded for starter Wade Miley according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
Insight: Allen Webster, Rubby De La Rosa, and a minor leaguer will reportedly be sent to Arizona. Miley will be inserted into Boston's rotation right away.
Andrew Heaney, SP, MIA12/10/2014 7:27:00 PM
Description: The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded for left-hander Andrew Heaney.
Insight: He is the main piece the Dodgers will be getting in return for Dee Gordon and Dan Haren. Heaney was the top prospect in Miami's organization, and he will have a chance to open up the season in Los Angeles' rotation. Kike Hernandez, Chris Hatcher, and Austin Barnes are also headed to the Dodgers.
Jon Lester, SP, OAK12/10/2014 9:00:00 AM
Description: The Chicago Cubs made perhaps the biggest free-agent signing of the offseason agreeing to a six-year, $155 million deal with Jon Lester according to FOX Sports Ken Rosenthal.
Insight: According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, the Red Sox offered six-years, $135 million, so Lester went with the bigger contract. Perhaps Boston was hoping for a hometown discount because its unlikely the organization couldn't have offered him $155 million. Lester will be at the top of the Cubs rotation that includes Jake Arrieta and Jason Hammel.
