Description: Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers said that pitching prospect Archie Bradley will come to spring training with a chance to make the 2014 rotation, according to Jon Morosi of foxsports.com.
Insight: Towers also said that Bradley will be able to throw at least 170 innings next season. The 21-year-old was selected seventh overall in the 2011 draft and went 14-5 with a 1.84 ERA and 162 strikeouts in 152 innings at two minor league stops last season. MLB.com ranks him as the seventh best prospect in the game.
Description: D'Backs catcher Miguel Montero had surgery on his finger over the weekend. SOURCE: Diamondbacks.com
Insight: He had an infection in his left index finger. Montero had a bit of a down season in 2013 with just 11 HR and a .230 batting average in 116 games. He'll be back in plenty of time for Spring Training.
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has hit safely in 15 straight games.
Insight: He has hit .417 with seven doubles, a triple, five homers, 17 RBI, 12 runs and two steals during the streak. With a .303 average, 36 home runs, 124 RBI, 102 runs, 15 steals and a .963 OPS, Goldschmidt is one of the NL's leading candidates for MVP.
Description: Diamondbacks rookie shortstop Didi Gregorius has faced Ricky Nolasco 11 times this season and picked up seven hits.
Insight: That's a .636 batting average. The rookie was hitting .322 on June 7 but has gone 37-for-169 (.219) since. He has little power and doesn't have a stolen base this year, but if you are looking for a one-day option Gregorius could be the ticket Thursday.
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is 6-for-11 (.545) versus Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu.
Insight: The Arizona first baseman went 4-for-4 with a homer and five RBI on Sunday and is now hitting .301 with 32 home runs, 114 RBI, 94 runs and a .948 OPS this season. He's one of the top candidates for NL MVP.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra is 3-for-21 (.143) against Colorado's Jhoulys Chacin.
Insight: Parra has had a similar season to last year, hitting .267 with a .727 OPS. However, despite getting 606 plate appearances and reaching base at a .326 clip, Parra has just 10 steals (10-for-20 on SBs). He stole 15 bases in 430 plate appearances last year. Sit him Sunday against Chacin.
Description: Arizona reliever J.J. Putz might be activated from the DL later this week. SOURCE: Arizona Republic
Insight: He dislocated his finger a few weeks ago while fielding a ground ball. Putz started the year as the Diamondbacks' closer but has since ceded that role to Brad Ziegler (8-1, 2.30 ERA, 10-for-12 in save opportunities).
Description: Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin stepped up with a second straight quality start Wednesday night.
Insight: He allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings and has a 2.51 ERA in his last two starts. The Diamondbacks were considering giving Corbin extra rest after he allowed 13 earned runs in 10 1/3 innings from Aug. 25 to Sept. 1, but he has remained on regular rest and turned things around lately. He's 14-6 with a 2.92 ERA in 197 innings this season.
Description: Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy was outstanding Saturday in a win over San Francisco.
Insight: McCarthy (8 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 6 K's 1 BB) kept the Giants in check by featuring his signature sinker-ball. He's been a horse lately, going at least seven innings in each of his last three outings (1.88 ERA over that span).
Description: If you're competing in a daily fantasy league, Diamondbacks infielder Willie Bloomquist could be a smart play Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: The Diamondbacks haven't released their starting lineup yet but based on Bloomquist's past success against starter Mark Buehrle (.463 AVG in 41 at bats), we're guessing he'll be in it. It's also worth noting that Bloomquist is hitting .563 since returning from the DL last week (9-for-16).
Description: D'Backs second baseman Aaron Hill is going up against Blue Jays lefthander Mark Buehrle on Wednesday. In the past, that hasn't worked out too well for him.
Insight: Hill carries an ugly .167 average in 24 encounters with Buehrle. He's also in the midst of a 3-for-17 dry spell at the plate. Wednesday looks like a good day to leave Hill on your team's bench.
Description: Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said that he might consider giving Patrick Corbin extra rest if he struggles again in his next start, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: He's given up 13 earned runs in his past two starts after allowing that many in his previous six outings. Corbin was 12-1 with a 2.31 ERA on July 23 but he has gone 1-4 in his last seven starts.
Description: D'Backs lefthander Patrick Corbin (5 IP, 9 H, 5 ER) got knocked around Sunday against San Francisco.
Insight: He's given up 13 runs in his past two starts after allowing that many in his previous six outings. The second half has not been kind to Corbin. Since the break, he's just 2-4 with a 4.47 ERA. In the first half of 2013, he was 11-1 with a 2.35 ERA.
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill finally got comfortable in August after having a tough first four months of the year.
Insight: A broken hand kept Hill out from April 14 to June 25 and he only hit .266 with a .754 OPS in his first 30 games back in the lineup, but he went 35-for-94 (.372) with seven doubles, a triple, four homers, 16 RBI and a 1.054 OPS last month.
Description: Look up in the dictionary "owning" a pitcher and you will see Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt versus Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum as the perfect example.
Insight: Goldschmidt is 9-for-17 (.529) in their matchups with five homers, 11 RBI and a 2.021 OPS. If ever there was a must-start, this is the one. The Arizona first baseman is having an MVP-type season, batting .300 with 31 HR and 104 RBI.
Description: Arizona outfielder Adam Eaton went 4-for-10 in Saturday's 18-inning game against the Phillies.
Insight: Eaton is 12-for-32 (.375) with four extra-base hits (one HR), six RBI and six runs over his last seven games (six starts). However, he's hitting just .258 with a .711 OPS and has zero steals on one attempt after swiping 44 in the minors last season.
Description: The Diamondbacks have placed righthander J.J. Putz on the 15-day DL.
Insight: Putz was diagnosed with a dislocated right finger after barehanding a grounder Friday night against the Phillies. Putz hasn't been closing for the D'Backs so even before the injury, his fantasy value was pretty limited.
Description: Arizona starter Trevor Cahill took a no decision Thursday afternoon despite allowing one run on four hits over seven innings against the Reds.
Insight: Cahill gave up four earned runs in five innings in his first start back from the disabled list last week after missing nearly two months with a shoulder problem. He has a 4.56 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP this season.
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt reached 100 RBI for the first time in his career Tuesday against the Reds.
Insight: Goldschmidt came into play Tuesday with 96 RBI and he reached 100 on on swing with a grand slam in the top of the eighth. The first baseman leads the NL in RBI and he's tied for first in homers with 31.
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado is 6-for-12 against Cincinnati right-hander Bronson Arroyo with a homer and a 1.333 OPS.
Insight: Prado is currently on a six-game hitting streak, batting .379 over the span. He is a low-end starter fantasy value (.278, 11 HR, 56 RBI) who benefits from being eligible at 2B, 3B and outfield.
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill has picked up two hits in six of the last seven games. He went 2-for-6 with a walk and two RBI, including the game-winner in the bottom of the 14th inning, Wednesday against Baltimore.
Insight: Hill has reverted to his 2012 form as of late. He's batting .385 with seven doubles, a triple, four homers and 16 RBI over his last 16 games.
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero (back), currently on the disabled list, should head out on rehab assignment and is expected to return to the lineup when first eligible next Tuesday.
Insight: Montero has been dealing with inflammation in his lower back since the last week of July. He hasn't been much of a fantasy option this season with a .228 batting average and a .661 OPS - well below his career numbers of .268 and .780.
Description: Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said he'll use third base prospect Matt Davidson is a reserve role, according to MLB.com.
Insight: Davidson, ranked as the D-Backs' No. 2 prospect by MLB.com, hit .278 with 16 homers, 68 RBI and an .832 OPS in 108 games with Triple-A Reno this season. With Eric Chavez going on the disabled list, it looked as though the team was calling up Davidson to play every day, but that won't be the case.
Description: The Diamondbacks have called up their No. 2 prospect Matt Davidson to take the place of Eric Chavez (knee, hip) at third base.
Insight: Davidson hit .278 with 16 homers, 68 RBI and an .832 OPS in 108 games with Triple-A Reno this season. He's strikes out a lot (123 K this season), so he could have trouble hitting for average in the majors. His biggest contribution to fantasy leagues will come via his power.
Description: Arizona third baseman Martin Prado has come away with just six hits in 29 at-bats against Jon Niese of the New York Mets, who will start Sunday against the D-Backs.
Insight: Prado is hitting everything right now -- he's 16-for-38 (.421) with six doubles, one homer and eight RBI over his last nine games -- and Niese hasn't started since June 20 due to a torn left rotator cuff, so fantasy owners should ignore the past history and roll with Prado Sunday.
Description: Diamondbacks right fielder Cody Ross went off for four hits Friday in his return to Fenway Park.
Insight: In his first game back in Boston the former Red Sox delivered two doubles, a single and his seventh homer of the season. He even found time to grab a stolen base. Ross has gone 9-for-14 at the dish over his last three contests.
Description: Arizona starter Wade Miley turned in another good outing Wednesday against the Rays.
Insight: And he'll probably be getting some thank you emails from the Red Sox, who were able to overtake the Rays for first place in the AL East. Miley is 4-1 with a 1.85 ERA in his last five starts. He'll face Tampa again next Tuesday.
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Jason Kubel is questionable for Tuesday's game against Tampa Bay with a stiff back, but if he plays he's a career .368 hitter with three homers versus Rays starter Roberto Hernandez.
Insight: Kubel hasn't performed up to expectations this season (.234, 5 HR, 27 RBI, .668 OPS), so this injury shouldn't cause much angst for fantasy owners. A.J. Pollock would likely get the start if Kubel can't go.
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill left Friday's game against San Diego because of a tight hamstring. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com
Insight: Hill went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles before exiting. Martin Prado moved from third base to second when Hill went out of the game. Eric Chavez, who started the game on the bench, has taken over for Prado at third base.
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero said his MRI showed inflammation in his back but nothing serious, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Insight: Montero will avoid the disabled list for now. The backstop has had a disappointing season , hitting .226 with eight homers and a .650 OPS. He hit .284 with an .825 OPS and averaged 16 homers and 87 RBI over the previous two seasons.
Description: According to Jack Magruder of FoxSportsArizona.com, Diamondbacks righthander Brad Ziegler will hold on to the closer's role until further notice.
Insight: Finally, they got it right. After experimenting with J.J. Putz, Heath Bell and a host of others, Ziegler has rightfully won the job that should have been his all along. He's been Arizona's most consistent reliever all season, collecting 11 holds and a 2.58 ERA in 51 appearances.
Description: Arizona pitcher Randall Delgado walked four batters over 5 2/3 innings Sunday at San Francisco, but he only allowed three hits and didn't give up a run to win the game.
Insight: Delgado has flirted with disaster this season, allowing 55 hits and seven homers in 44 2/3 innings, but he only walked five batters in 39 innings prior to Sunday's game. He's 2-3 with a 3.43 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado went 3-for-4 with a triple Sunday against the Giants.
Insight: Prado is hitting just .258, down from .301 last year, even though his strikeout rate and batted ball distribution are nearly identical to last season and his HR/FB and IFFB rate are better. The difference: his BABIP, which was .322 last season, is .268 this year.
Description: Arizona right fielder Gerardo Parra faces a difficult task Sunday against the Giants. He'll have to hit against lefthander Madison Bumgarner, a pitcher he has traditionally struggled against.
Insight: Struggle may not even be the right word. To be blunt, Parra has been downright useless against Bumgarner with six strikeouts and only one hit in 12 previous at bats. His current 2-for-28 slump doesn't make us any more confident.
Description: Arizona is calling up lefthander Tyler Skaggs to pitch Monday against Chicago. SOURCE: Arizona Republic
Insight: Skaggs (2-1, 4.03 ERA) has had mixed results in his five big league appearances this season but the D'Backs will continue to give him chances. Trevor Cahill and Brandon McCarthy aren't expected to come off the DL until next month so Skaggs should have quite a few opportunities to prove himself.
Description: According to Kyndra de St. Aubin of ArizonaSports.com, Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) will start his rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno Sunday.
Insight: McCarthy hasn't pitched since May 30 due to right shoulder discomfort. Manager Kirk Gibson has previously said McCarthy would need two rehab starts, but the right-hander said Friday that how many starts he makes is still undecided. I think it just depends on what they need," said the right-hander. "Throw Sunday and if you get your innings and you get your pitches and you're pretty close to being ready then it's just kind of up to them if they want to let me stretch out in a big league game or another one in Reno is fine, it's just kind of up to them at this point."
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez should be ready for the second half opener. He's been dealing with a stiff right hip.
Insight: Chavez pinch hit on Sunday and should be ready for duty in the second half. Starter Martin Prado is batting just .244 against right-handers, while Chavez is batting .315 with a .933 OPS against right-handers.
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero went 2-for-3 with a solo homer Saturday against Milwaukee but is batting .200 in July.
Insight: Montero had his best month of the season in June, hitting .278 with two homers and a .748 OPS. That came after he hit .200 in April and .198 in May. Montero produced an average in the .280s, a home run total in the teens, an RBI total in the 80s and an OPS in the .820s in each of the previous two seasons, but he's hitting .223 with seven homers, 32 RBI and a .639 OPS in 85 games this year.
Description: Arizona GM Kevin Towers said Thursday that the team doesn't have a closer right now, according to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com.
Insight: Putz blew his first save chance after returning from the DL on June 29, but he hasn't allowed a hit in 3 1/3 innings. Meanwhile, Heath Bell has blown his last two opportunities and allowed nine earned runs over his last 9 2/3 frames. Look for Putz to eventually retake the role.
Description: According to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com, Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers said pitcher Trevor Cahill (shoulder, hip) might not return until August.
Insight: Cahill, who is 0-6 with a 7.91 ERA in his last eight outings, was placed on the DL with a bruised hip earlier this month, but he also tweaked his shoulder during a game of catch last week. The shoulder injury is the more serious concern at this time.
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Jason Kubel owns Brewers righthander Yovani Gallardo.
Insight: Kubel carries a .462 lifetime average against Gallardo in 13 previous at bats. Fantasy owners will look for him to add to those totals Thursday night at Chase Field. Of course, that's assuming Kirk Gibson actually decides to play him. Kubel (.250, 4 HR, 25 RBI) has only started six of the team's last 12 games.
Description: Arizona pitcher Trevor Cahill (hip) is not likely to be one of the team's five starters in the first turn through the rotation following the All-Star break, according to Jack Magruder of FoxSportsArizona.com.
Insight: Cahill, who is 0-6 with a 7.91 ERA in his last eight outings, is on the disabled list with a bruised hip. He also tweaked his shoulder during a game of catch last week. We don't think either injury is serious, but the team is probably keeping him on the DL due to his struggles.
Description: Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said he doesn't expect Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) to return to the rotation immediately after the All-Star break, according to Jack Magruder of FoxSportsArizona.com.
Insight: McCarthy hasn't pitched since May 30 due to right shoulder discomfort. He could end up being out until August.
Description: The Diamondbacks have activated outfielder Adam Eaton (elbow) from the DL.
Insight: Eaton, who has been out since late March with a sprained UCL in his throwing elbow, was a popular fantasy sleeper before his injury due to his on-base and speed potential. Eaton joins Gerardo Parra, A.J. Pollock, Cody Ross and Jason Kubel in the D-Backs outfield, so he might have trouble getting regular at-bats at first.
Description: Arizona third baseman Martin Prado has struggled against Rockies starter Roy Oswalt.
Insight: He's hitting a dismal .154 against him in 13 career at bats. Prado has been pretty ordinary this year. In 84 games, he's batting .252 with eight long balls and 30 runs driven in. He's 1-for-5 on stolen base attempts this season.
Description: Arizona right fielder Cody Ross went 5-for-5 Saturday in an 11-1 win over Colorado.
Insight: It was his first career five-hit game. Ross (.269, 5 HR, 25 RBI) also scored three runs and stole his first base of the season. Only one of the five hits was for extra bases (ground-rule double in the second inning).
Description: Willie Bloomquist's injured left hand has two broken bones and he'll be sidelined for up to two months. The Arizona infielder was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning Wednesday against Washington.
Insight: Bloomquist has mostly been used in a pinch-hitting capacity so it probably won't change many fantasy rosters.
Description: Diamondbacks lefty Tyler Skaggs will start Friday against the Rockies in place of Trevor Cahill, who is on the DL with a bruised hip. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com
Insight: Skaggs has a 4.26 ERA and an 87/28 K/BB in 76 innings with Triple-A Reno this season, and he just three 8 1/3 shutout innings with 13 K in his latest start. However, the lefty has posted a 5.67 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP in 46 major league innings.
Description: Arizona pitcher Randall Delgado earned his first win with the Diamondbacks Wednesday against the New York Mets.
Insight: Delgado has allowed two earned runs and thrown at least six innings in three of his four starts since joining the rotation and has a 25/4 K/BB in 27 innings this season. With Brandon McCarthy and Trevor Cahill on the DL and prospect Tyler Skaggs not an option after posting a 5.40 ERA in three starts this season, Delgado should remain in the rotation for now.
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has faced Mets All-Star caliber right-hander Matt Harvey just three times and struck out each time.
Insight: Goldschmidt is a rising fantasy star, batting .302 with 20 HR and 69 RBI and a .933 OPS, despite just three hits in his last 19 at-bats. You shouldn't expect much from him in the way of production while Harvey is on the mound. Of course, when Harvey pitches, you can probably say that about most hitters. Latest update, Goldschmidt is not in the starting lineup.
Description: D'Backs right fielder Gerardo Parra fell and hit his head trying to make a catch in the eighth inning Monday against New York and is doubtful for Tuesday's game.
Insight: The team said there was no concussion, but he's likely to sit at least one game. Parra has been a nice surprise this season for a No. 4 outfielder. Due to injuries he's played in 81 games and is batting .301 with seven homers, 26 RBI, 47 runs and an .811 OPS.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session Monday afternoon, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: McCarthy threw a bullpen session on June 21 but he has had to take a step back after experiencing fatigue in his shoulder. The right-hander has been sidelined since May 30 due to shoulder inflammation and is still out indefinitely.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Eaton (elbow) will play the outfield in rehab games Saturday, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Eaton, who has been out since late March with a sprained UCL in his throwing elbow, has been serving as the DH in his rehab assignment with High-A Visalia. He'll likely return to action sometime in the middle of this month. The outfielder was a popular fantasy sleeper before his injury due to his on-base and speed potential.
Description: Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy walked four and gave up four runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings Saturday at Atlanta.
Insight: Kennedy was making his return from a 10-game suspension. The righty has been horrible this year, going 3-4 with a 5.36 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He's been bad both on the road and at home too, so you can't even pick your spots if you own him. It's time to move on.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock hit his sixth homer of the season Saturday against the Braves.
Insight: Pollock has unexpectedly received regular playing time due to injuries in Arizona's outfield. While his defense is spectacular -- Pollock's 10.6 UZR ranks third in baseball -- he's only hitting .255 with middling power and speed numbers.
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI Saturday at Atlanta.
Insight: The backstop has been better in June, hitting .278 with two homers, after batting .199 with three homers in April and May combined, but he's still not doing enough to warrant ownership in most standard leagues.
Description: The D'Backs have designated first baseman Eric Hinske for assignment.
Insight: Hinske made headlines earlier this month for his involvement in a bench-clearing brawl. Unfortunately, he rarely made the news for his play on the field, hitting just .173 in 52 at bats this season. Hinske's next team will be his eighth in 12 major league seasons.
Description: Arizona ace Patrick Corbin (7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's) remained undefeated Thursday in his start against Washington.
Insight: It's Corbin's fifth no-decision in a row. He's pitching well but the Diamondbacks just can't seem to score any runs for him. Over his last five outings, Arizona has averaged just four runs per game. Maybe Corbin will finally reach win No. 10 Tuesday against New York.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) had to play catch on flat ground Wednesday instead of off a mound due to shoulder fatigue, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: McCarthy threw a bullpen session last week but he has had to take a step back after experiencing fatigue. The right-hander has been sidelined since May 30 due to shoulder inflammation and is still a few weeks away from returning.
Description: X-rays came back negative on Willie Bloomquist's injured left hand. The Arizona shortstop was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning Wednesday against Washington. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com
Insight: That's obviously good news for the D'Backs. Bloomquist has mostly been used in a pinch-hitting capacity so even if the hand injury turned out to be serious it probably wouldn't have affected many fantasy rosters.
Description: Arizona closer Heath Bell said he has worked out a mechanical issue that has caused him to allow seven runs in four innings over his last five outings, according to MLB.com. "I fixed it last Sunday," Bell said. "It was really something very simple. It's one of those things sometimes a coach sees you do something that you don't feel yourself doing or see yourself doing. Then you correct it. And as soon as you do, it's like, 'Why wasn't I doing this before?'"
Insight: Bell has saved 13 games in 16 chances but has a 5.02 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. He has allowed 37 hits and walked 10 in 28 2/3 innings this season and likely will relinquish the closer role to J.J. Putz when Putz comes off the DL this week.
Description: Playing his first game since April 14, Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill (hand) went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored Tuesday at Washington.
Insight: Hill missed more than two months with a fractured left hand. He was one of the top second base options in fantasy last season and started off well this year before his injury. He's hitting .325 in 40 at-bats and should be owned in all leagues.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill dropped to 3-9 after losing to Washington on Tuesday.
Insight: Cahill has lost five straight decisions and has a 7.34 ERA over his last seven starts. He allowed six earned runs on eight hits over five innings Tuesday against has a 4.29 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP overall.
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius is not in Tuesday's starting lineup. Willie Bloomquist will start at shortstop with Aaron Hill at second base.
Insight: After a fast start, Gregorius' average has steadily fallen. He's batting .250 in 19 June games after batting .407 in April and .293 in May. With Hill healthy, gregorius is likely to share time with Bloomquist.
Description: Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill is finally ready to return from his broken hand, has been activated, and is in Tuesday's lineup against Washington.
Insight: Hill returns to face Nationals' ace Gio Gonzalez in an unfavorable matchup. He's 0-for-7 in his career matchups with Gonzalez and fantasy owners should wait one more day before installing Hill back into the lineup.
Description: Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill is finally ready to return from his broken hand and is expected to be activated in time for Tuesday's game with Washington.
Insight: Hill returns to face Nationals' ace Gio Gonzalez in an unfavorable matchup. He's 0-for-7 in his career matchups with Gonzalez and fantasy owners should wait one more day before installing Hill back into the lineup.
Description: Heath Bell has been a disaster over his last five outings. Over that span, the Arizona closer has watched his ERA rise from 3.28 all the way to 5.02.
Insight: He's given up a home run in five straight appearances. Miraculously, he's only blown one save during that stretch. Either way, fantasy owners should avoid Bell until he can start keeping the ball in the park.
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero is hitless in 10 at-bats versus Cincinnati starter Johnny Cueto.
Insight: Montero is not living up to expectations, batting just .222 with four home runs and 22 RBI in 230 at-bats. That's well below last year's pace of .286 with 15 HR and 88 RBI. This matchup isn't going to help any of his numbers.
Description: Arizona third baseman Eric Chavez (oblique) is expected to begin his minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno early next week, Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said, according to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com.
Insight: Chavez suffered a strained right oblique during an at-bat on May 30. He could be back by the end of this month.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill was pulled from Wednesday's game in the second inning after being hit in the hip area by a line drive.
Insight: The Diamondbacks' rotation is already thin with Brandon McCarthy on the DL and Ian Kennedy on suspension. Cahill was actually hit in the first inning and came out for the second before being removed.
Description: Diamondbacks 3B/OF Martin Prado hit his first homer since April 29 Tuesday versus Miami.
Insight: Prado had a homer drought of 44 games (42 starts). Despite a batted ball distribution (22.3% LD, 48.6% GB, 29.1% FB) that is nearly identical to last season, Prado's BABIP is just .260 compared to .322 last year. That explains why his average has dropped from .301 to .245. He should have better luck in the last few months of the season.
Description: In his first start of the 2013 season, Diamondbacks hurler Randall Delgado allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out six with zero walks over seven innings Tuesday agaisnt the Marlins.
Insight: Delgado, a former Braves pitching prospect, was traded from Atlanta to Arizona in the Justin Upton trade. While Ian Kennedy will miss and a start due to suspension and Brandon McCarthy is still on the DL, the D-Backs have enough days off in the next week that Delgado might only get one more start before being returned to the bullpen or minors.
Description: Diamondbacks left-hander Wade Miley gave up six runs in six innings Saturday at San Diego, but five were unearned.
Insight: Miley allowed four hits in the bottom of the fourth, but because Didi Gregorius made an error on the second batter of the inning, all five runs Miley allowed in the frame were unearned. It still wasn't an encouraging start for the struggling lefty. Miley is 4-6 with a 4.64 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP in 83 1/3 innings.
Description: Arizona righthander Ian Kennedy has been suspended for 10 games due to his role in Tuesday night's bench clearing brawl against the Dodgers.
Insight: Dodgers righthander Zack Greinke plunked Miguel Montero after Kennedy threw at rookie Yasiel Puig and hit him in the face. Kennedy responded by nailing Greinke near the head in the next half inning, which led to the benches clearing. Kennedy figures to appeal the suspension until after his next start and thus will only cost fantasy owners one start.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross went 4-for-7 with a double and two runs scored Wednesday versus the Dodgers.
Insight: Ross was a solid third or fourth fantasy outfielder last season with Boston, hitting 22 homers with 81 RBI, but his move to Arizona has not gone well. He started the season with an injury and is batting .272 with two home runs and 16 RBI in 50 games. He has struggled immensely against righties, batting .203 with zero homers and 21 K in 118 at-bats against them.
Description: Arizona righthander Ian Kennedy will probably be suspended for his role in Tuesday night's bench clearing brawl against the Dodgers.
Insight: Dodgers righthander Zack Greinke plunked Miguel Montero after Kennedy threw at rookie Yasiel Puig and hit him in the face. Kennedy responded by nailing Greinke in the head in the next half inning, which led to the benches clearing. Kennedy, Puig and three coaches were ejected. We should know the length of Kennedy's suspension sometime in the next 24 hours.
Description: The Diamondbacks are sending lefthander Tyler Skaggs back to Triple-A.
Insight: Skaggs looked awful on Sunday, allowing eight hits, three walks and five earned runs in five innings. Despite his struggles, Skaggs (1-1, 5.40 ERA) is still a top prospect and likely to receive another chance at the major league level later this season.
Description: Diamondbacks left-hander Tyler Skaggs has given up 10 earned runs on 14 hits in 10 2/3 innings since being recalled to take the place of Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) in the rotation.
Insight: Baseball America ranked Skaggs 12th on its preseason top-100 prospects list. The left-hander had a rough year at Triple-A, posting a 5.23 ERA after posting a 5.83 ERA in 29 1/3 major league innings last season. He'll have an easier matchup at San Diego his next time out.
Description: D'Backs starter Brandon McCarthy suffered a seizure last week and had to be rushed to the hospital. SOURCE: Arizona Republic
Insight: McCarthy was in a restaurant with his wife when the seizure happened. He's doing well and the team expects him to resume throwing within the next couple of days. The righthander is on the DL with shoulder inflammation.
Description: Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, according to Kyndra de St. Aubin of ArizonaSports.com.
Insight: Putz last pitched on May 7 due to a strained right elbow. This will be his first time throwing off a mound since that date. Heath Bell has saved 9-of-10 chances since taking over the closer role, and Putz wasn't exactly a sure thing before his injury, but we expect Putz to get the job back when he returns.
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill (hand) will take batting practice on the field Friday, according to Kyndra de St. Aubin of ArizonaSports.com.
Insight: Hill broke his left hand after being hit by a pitch on April 9 and hasn't played since April 14. His hand has taken longer than expected to heal, but he should be getting close to a rehab assignment.
Description: Diamondbacks right-hander Daniel Hudson, who had Tommy John surgery last season, has re-torn the UCL in his right elbow.
Insight: The 26-year-old started his rehab assignment recently and was trying to work his way back to the rotation by next month. The right-hander will likely have to undergo another Tommy John surgery and will miss most of 2014.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross is not in the starting lineup Thursday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Ross is hitting .208 (22-for-106) against right-handers this year, and with tough righty Shelby Miller starting for St. Louis Thursday, the D-Backs will go with A.J. Pollock in center field and Gerardo Parra in right.
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt continued his RBI tear with a grand slam Wednesday versus the Cardinals.
Insight: Goldschmidt has contributed 12 RBI in his last five games. That puts him on pace for 146, which would be the most we've seen in the major leagues since Ryan Howard had that exact number back in 2008. He's on the short list of NL MVP candidates.
Description: Diamondbacks prospect Tyler Skaggs has been recalled from Triple-A Reno to start Tuesday against the Cardinals. Skaggs is replacing Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) in the rotation while McCarthy is on the DL.
Insight: Baseball America ranked Skaggs 12th on its preseason top-100 prospects list. The left-hander has had a rough year at Triple-A, posting a 5.23 ERA, but he does have a 54/17 K/BB in 51 2/3 innings and threw a six-inning, three-hit, no-run, nine-strikeout start against the Rangers on May 27. On potential alone, he should be owned in most leagues.
Description: D'Backs ace Patrick Corbin extended his winning streak to seven games Sunday against the Cubs.
Insight: It wasn't Corbin's best outing (6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB's, 5 K's) but it was good enough for the win. He's now 9-0 with a 2.06 ERA in 11 starts. Opponents are hitting just .210 against the lefthander this season.
Description: Diamondbacks right-hander Daniel Hudson, who had Tommy John surgery last season, will be reevaluated after his second rehab start on June 10 to determine his status, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Hudson was throwing in the mid-90s in an extended spring training game last week and is ready to take the next step. The right-hander didn't appear to have a clear path to join Arizona's rotation, but with Brandon McCarthy's shoulder injury and Wade Miley's continued struggles, he certainly could join the mix if he's ready after June 10.
Description: Arizona prospect Tyler Skaggs is expected to take Brandon McCarthy's spot in the rotation, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: McCarthy was placed on the DL Saturday with a shoulder injury. Randall Delgado was called up to take the roster spot, but he's expected to work out of the bullpen. Skaggs should be added in all leagues, as he is one of baseball's top prospects. The left-hander struck out nine batters in six shutout innings in a spot start on May 27 against the Rangers.
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt homered, drove in four runs and scored three times Saturday against the Cubs.
Insight: Like he did last year, Goldschmidt has provided fantasy owners with six-category production. This year, he has just turned it up a couple of notches in every category. He's hitting .332 with 13 homers, 45 RBI, 37 runs, four steals and a 1.014 OPS.
Description: The Diamondbacks have placed starter Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder injury, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Insight: He'll have an MRI Sunday in Arizona. The right-hander is 2-4 with a 5.00 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP this season. He has a history of shoulder problems. Randall Delgado has been recalled but fantasy owners can hold off on adding him. We could also see prospect Tyler Skaggs get called up.
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez has been diagnosed with a strained right oblique, according to Anthony Andro of FOXSportsSouthwest.com.
Insight: That was what we expected after he grabbed his side on a swing during his first at-bat. As he has his entire career, Chavez has crushed right-handers this season for a .340 average, seven homers and a 1.017 OPS. He has just 11 at-bats against lefties. He's been placed on the 15-day disabled list, but could need a little more time than two weeks to recover.
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt went 4-for-5 Thursday against Texas.
Insight: Goldschmidt boasts an impressive batting average (.337 AVG) but the power he displayed earlier in the year has been absent over the past couple of weeks. He hasn't left the yard since May 17th, a span of ten games without a home run. Even without the homers, Goldschmidt is still a must-start.
Description: The Rangers torched Brandon McCarthy on Thursday.
Insight: In 2 2/3 innings, the Arizona starter allowed six runs on nine hits without any strikeouts. That snaps McCarthy's five-game unbeaten streak. He'll look to get back on track Tuesday at St. Louis.
He's likely to be placed on the disabled list.
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez left Thursday's game in the middle of his first at-bat. He appeared to injure his side.
Insight: It could be an oblique injury for the oft-injured veteran. As he has his entire career, Chavez has crushed right-handers this season for a .340 average, seven homers and a 1.017 OPS. He has just 11 at-bats against lefties.
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill (hand) could begin hitting by the end of the weekend, according to MLB.com. The second baseman suffered a fractured left hand on April 9.
Insight: Hill's left hand is healing slowly and he already has been out for six weeks. Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Hill probably will go from batting practice to extended spring training and finally on a rehab assignment, so he's still likely to miss a couple more weeks.
Description: Diamondbacks right-hander Daniel Hudson, who had Tommy John surgery last season, will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Mobile on Tuesday, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Hudson was throwing in the mid-90s in an extended spring training game Wednesday and is ready to take the next step. The right-hander is certainly worth rostering in mixed leagues for owners with extra DL spot, even thought Hudson doesn't have a clear path in Arizona's rotation.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra is questionable for Wednesday's game against Texas after suffering a cramp in his left calf on Monday night.
Insight: Due to injuries to Cody Ross and Adam Eaton, Parra has had the chance to play every day, and he has responded with a .307 average and 21 extra-base hits and a .832 OPS in 202 at-bats. Consider him day-to-day.
Description: D'Backs infielder Willie Bloomquist is pounding the ball in his rehab assignment at Reno (7-for-15) and should be ready to return to the big leagues shortly.
Insight: Bloomquist's batting average was solid last season (.302) but he didn't leave the yard in any of his 324 at bats and he got thrown out 10 times on the base paths (just seven steals). With the emergence of Didi Gregorius and the return of Aaron Hill in early June, Bloomquist should stay as a part-time player and have limited fantasy value.
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill's CT scan showed that his fractured left hand is "mildly improved," according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. He proceed with baseball activites and see how his hand responds.
Insight: Hill's left hand is healing slowly and he already has been out for six weeks. We should see him back by mid-June at the latest if he doesn't suffer a setback.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra is questionable for Tuesday's game against Texas after suffering a cramp in his left calf on Monday night.
Insight: Due to injuries to Cody Ross and Adam Eaton, Parra has had the chance to play every day, and he has responded with a .307 average and 21 extra-base hits and a .832 OPS in 202 at-bats. Consider him day-to-day.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy will miss is schedule start on Monday due to a cut on his right index finger which happened while he was doing the dishes, according to beat writer Nick Piecoro.
Insight: He's got a solid excuse to never do the dishes again. We're still waiting for the Kennedy of 2011 (21-4, 2.88 ERA, 1.09 WHIP) to make an appearance. Hopefully he'll be able to start by Friday.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Eaton doesn't have any structural damage in his elbow, but he'll be shut down from throwing for 2-3 weeks, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Insight: Eaton suffered a sprained UCL late in March and began feeling more soreness recently. This is ultimately good news, however, as the lack of structural damage means he won't need Tommy John surgery.
Description: Arizona left fielder Jason Kubel is a career .360 hitter (9-for-25) with three homers against Colorado starter Jon Garland.
Insight: Kubel returned to the lineup Sunday after missing two games with a left quad injury. He went 0-for-3 with a sac fly and is now hitting .238. Fantasy owners are looking for another big season out of him after he blasted 30 home runs last season with 90 RBI.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra's leadoff homer Saturday against Miami was the only run of the game for either team.
Insight: Due to injuries to Cody Ross and Adam Eaton, Parra has had the chance to play every day, and he has responded with a .327 average and 20 extra-base hits in 168 at-bats. He's hitting .365 with three round-trippers in May.
Description: Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon McCarthy dominated Miami for his third career shutout Saturday night.
Insight: McCarthy gave up three hits and walked two to win his first game of the season. McCarthy was battered for 61 hits and 30 earned runs in his first 40 innings this year, but he has held opponents scoreless over 17 innings in his last two outings.
Description: Arizona left fielder Jason Kubel missed Friday's against the Marlins and is questionable for Saturday's game against Miami with a strained left quad.
Insight: Kubel (.250, 3 HR, 9 RBI) hasn't played since Wednesday and possibly more importantly hasn't homered since April 29. After hitting 30 homers last season and knocking in 90 runs, a lot is expected of Kubel and to date we haven't seem much to be excited about.
Description: Arizona righthander Trevor Cahill surrendered just one run in eight innings Friday night in a victory over the Marlins.
Insight: Cahill is really on a roll right now. Over his last five starts, he's 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA. Walks have been an issue (24 in 58 innings) but other than that, Cahill hasn't given his owners much to complain about this season.
Description: Diamondbacks closer Heath Bell has saved five of six chances since J.J. Putz went down with an injury.
Insight: Bell had a slip-up on May 12 against the Phillies when he allowed two runs on four hits to blow a lead, but otherwise he hasn't allowed a run in his other five save opportunities since May 7. The right-hander is starting to gain back the trust of fantasy owners after his disastrous season with the Marlins in 2012.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Eaton (elbow) will be on rehab assignment for about one more week before returning to the big club.
Insight: Eaton suffered a strained UCL late in March. It will be interesting to see how manager Kirk Gibson juggles his outfield upon Eaton's return with Geraldo Parra and A.J. Pollock playing well in his absence along with Jason Kubel and Cody Ross.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross is 4-for-6 with a double and a pair of home runs against Atlanta left-hander Mike Minor.
Insight: Ross missed the first two weeks of the season but is back in the outfield on a regular basis. He's not producing at the level he did in Boston last season (22 HR, 81 RBI, .807 OPS), but this matchup could help get him started.
Description: D'Backs righthander Brandon McCarthy didn't allow a run in eight innings Sunday against Philadelphia.
Insight: Unfortunately, Arizona's bullpen gave up four in the next two frames to lose 4-2 in extra innings. McCarthy (0-3, 5.63 ERA) hasn't won a game since last August. That's a span of nine starts without a win.
Description: D'Backs closer J.J. Putz won't need surgery on his strained elbow.
Insight: For a second it looked like Putz might be headed for Tommy John surgery but Fox's Ken Rosenthal has assured us that's not the case. With that said, it's doubtful we'll see Putz again before the All-Star break.
Description: Arizona's Wade Miley outpitched Clayton Kershaw Wednesday in a battle of All-Star lefthanders.
Insight: Miley has had major control issues this season (10 walks in his previous two outings) but he held it together on Wednesday, striking out four and walking none in 7 2/3 innings. He's 3-1 on the season with a 2.93 ERA in seven starts.
Description: According to ESPN's Buster Olney, J.J. Putz is likely headed for major elbow surgery.
Insight: Putz left Tuesday's game with elbow stiffness. Even if the team opts for rehab over surgery, Olney says that Putz is going to be out a long time. Heath Bell will get the first crack at save chances.
Description: Diamondbacks reliever Heath Bell will be used as the closer while J.J. Putz (elbow) is out. SOURCE: John Gambadoro, 620 KTAR Phoenix
Insight: David Hernandez' recent struggles likely cost him the first shot at the closer role. Bell has a 4.73 ERA, but he also has a 19/3 K/BB in 13 1/3 innings this season. Still, it's going to take a leap of faith to add Bell after he had a 5.09 ERA and eight blown saves last year for the Marlins.
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has had a couple of excellent matchups this week, but Wednesday isn't one of them. He's 1-for-14 with seven strikeouts in his matchups against Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.
Insight: Goldschmidt has gotten off to a excellent start, batting .314 with seven homers, 27 RBI and 20 runs scored, but this isn't a matchup which is likely to improve on those statistics. Avoid.
Description: Arizona relief pitcher Heath Bell was brought in to close on Tuesday after J.J. Putz left the game with elbow stiffness.
Insight: Arizona has plenty of options if Putz is sidelined: David Hernandez, Matt Reynolds and Bell. Bell has the experience and successfully closed in Tuesday's three-out save opportunity which should mean he gets another shot at the next one.
Description: Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz left Tuesday night's game with elbow stiffness.
Insight: This could explain Putz's ineffectiveness (2-1, 4.26 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, four blown saves). Arizona has plenty of options if Putz is sidelined: David Hernandez, Matt Reynolds and Heath Bell. Bell has the experience and successfully closed in Tuesday's save opportunity.
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius (concussion) has been activated from the seven-day disabled list.
Insight: Gregorious was hit in the helmet by a 93-mph fastball, but he cleared all concussion tests Tuesday. He played well in his first seven games, batting .407 with a pair of homers and a 1.226 OPS. He's certainly got more fantasy upside than Cliff Pennington (career .247 batting average, .665 OPS).
Description: Diamondbacks prospect Tyler Skaggs owns a 6.15 ERA and a 24/12 K/BB in 26 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season.
Insight: Skaggs is rated as the No. 10 prospect in baseball by MLB.com. He was ineffective in six starts last year, posting a 5.83 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP and a 21/13 K/BB in 29 1/3 innings. However, he owns a career 3.19 ERA and a 9.82 K/9 in 415 1/3 career minor league innings.
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius (concussion) has been cleared for baseball activities. SOURCE: MLB.com
Insight: Gregorious was hit in the helmet by a 93-mph fastball just four days ago, but he cleared all concussion tests Tuesday. He is eligible to be activated Saturday, but manager Kirk Gibson said he wasn't sure when the team will activate the young shortstop.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra is getting to play everyday and proving to be a great asset to both Arizona and fantasy owners hitting .305 with 18 runs scored, but Tuesday is a poor matchup which should be avoided.
Insight: Parra is hitless in 10 career at-bats against Madison Bumgarner including five strikeouts.
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius, who left Friday's game after being hit in the helmet by a pitch from Josh Outman and missed Saturday's contest has been put on the seven-day concussion list.
Insight: He appears to have avoided serious injury, but these days any head injury is watched carefully. The 23-year-old is off to a quick start, batting .407 with a pair of homers and a 1.226 OPS since being called up seven games ago.
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius, who left Friday's game after being hit in the helmet by a pitch from Josh Outman and missded Saturday's contest, is doubtful for Sunday's game against Colorado.
Insight: He appears to have avoided serious injury, but might still be a candidate for the seven-day concussion disabled list. The 23-year-old is off to a quick start, batting .407 with a pair of homers and a 1.226 OPS since being called up seven games ago.
Description: Jack Magruder from Fox Sports Arizona is hearing that Diamondbacks left fielder Jason Kubel could be back in the major leagues as soon as Wednesday. He's been on the DL with an injured quad.
Insight: He's expected to participate in rehab games for Triple-A Reno on Monday and Tuesday. Gerardo Parra will move back to a reserve role upon Kubel's return.
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero is a career .455 hitter (5-for-11) versus Colorado left-hander Jeff Francis with a home run and a 1.182 OPS.
Insight: Montero is off to a slow start, batting .197 with a homer and 10 RBI through his first 22 games. He was a decent fantasy option in 2012 (.286, 65 runs, 15 HR, 88 RBI, .829 OPS), though he seems to have hit a plateau, failing to greatly improve on the promise of 2011. This season isn't looking any better either.
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius left Friday's game after being hit in the helmet by a pitch from Josh Outman.
Insight: He appears to have avoided serious injury, but could certainly miss a few days. The 23-year-old is off to a quick start, batting .407 with a pair of homers and a 1.226 OPS since being called up seven games ago.
Description: According to Diamondbacks.com, manager Kirk Gibson will stick with J.J. Putz at closer despite his struggles.
Insight: Putz (1-0, 5.00 ERA) has already blown three saves this season including one Tuesday night in San Francisco. Even Putz, who is nearing 200 saves for his career, isn't immune to the occasional slump. It's too early for fantasy owners to lose faith in him.
Description: Arizona closer J.J. Putz blew his third save on Tuesday night.
Insight: Although that's more blown saves than Carlos Marmol or John Axford, he's not in danger of losing his job. Putz saved 77 games with a sub-3.00 ERA. Heath Bell or David Hernandez would be Arizona's other closing options if the slump continues.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra is getting to play everyday with the injuries to Jason Kubel and Adam Eaton, but Wednesday's matchup is a poor one for him as he's hitless in 10 at-bats versus Giants starter Madison Bumgarner with five strikeouts.
Insight: Parra was supposed to start the season as the fourth outfielder but the injuries to Eaton and Kubel have allowed Parra to start 19 of 20 games. He's batting .291 with 14 runs scored.
Description: D'Backs outfielder Adam Eaton (elbow) has been hitting since April 4 and began throwing Friday, according to Diamondbacks.com.
Insight: Eaton suffered a strained UCL late in March. D-Backs manager Kirk Gibson said it will be about a month from Friday that Eaton will be ready to return, which puts him on track to come back around May 19. "He'll throw every other day for two weeks," Gibson said. "Then he'll go to two days in a row. Probably a day or two days off, then get into three in a row. ... We're not going to rush him."
Description: Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley had a 3-0 lead with two outs and one on in the sixth inning Wednesday against the Yankees, but he gave up a double and walked the next two batters before reliever Tony Sipp gave up a two-run single to tie the game.
Insight: Miley was dominant through the first six innings, allowing just two hits and one walk, but he ran out of gas. He has a 2.79 ERA and 1.09 WHIP through three starts.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy has a 7.47 ERA and 2.04 WHIP through three starts with his new team.
Insight: McCarthy has allowed 28 hits in just 15 2/3 innings, and he made it through just four innings Tuesday against New York. The right-hander has posted an ERA in the low threes in each of the last two seasons, so we're willing to give him more time.
Description: The Diamondbacks have called up shortstop prospect Didi Gregorius from the minors after placing Aaron Hill (broken hand) on the DL. Gregorius was acquired from Cincinnati in a three-team trade that sent Trevor Bauer to Cleveland and Shin Soo-Choo to the Reds this offseason.
Insight: He might have started the season with the big league club but he suffered a UCL sprain early in spring training. Gregorius hit .387 (12-for-31) with two homers and a steal in seven rehab games at Triple-A Reno and should start at shortstop, with Cliff Pennington moving to second.
Description: The Diamondbacks have placed second baseman Aaron Hill on the disabled list with a broken left hand. He's expected to miss 4-6 weeks, according to beat writer Nick Piecoro.
Insight: Hill was hit in the left hand last week, sat out a few days and had to leave early from Sunday's game. X-rays came back negative but an MRI revealed a small fracture on Tuesday. Didi Gregorius has been called up and will likely start at shortstop, with Cliff Pennington and Martin Prado playing second base and Eric Chavez getting time at third.
Description: Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill, who left Sunday's game in the fourth inning with a wrist injury, is not in Tuesday's starting lineup.
Insight: Hill has put up solid numbers with a .278 batting average, a pair of homers, 11 runs scored and six RBI. Martin Prado will start at second base with Eric Chavez at third. Prado likely already has second base eligibility so this doesn't add anything to his value.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill held Los Angeles scoreless over 7 1/3 innings Sunday. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four.
Insight: The start came at Chase Field, where Cahill went 7-7 with a 4.68 ERA and 1.43 WHIP last season (6-5, 2.91, 1.16 on the road) and 0-2 with a 5.91 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in his first two starts this year. Due to his inconsistencies, Cahill is an average fantasy arm.
Description: D'Backs right fielder Cody Ross could be activated from the disabled list Sunday against the Dodgers. He's missed the first two weeks of the season due to a sore calf. SOURCE: Jack Magruder, Fox Sports Arizona
Insight: It seemed like the Diamondbacks were going to wait until Tuesday to activate Ross but now that Jason Kubel is out with a quad injury, they may need him a bit sooner. Ross showed decent power in 2012, reaching 20 HR and 80 RBI in the same season for just the second time in his career.
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Jason Kubel could be headed to the DL according to Jack Magruder from Fox Sports Arizona. Kubel suffered a quad injury earlier in the week.
Insight: Kubel went for an MRI on Saturday and the results should give us a better idea of how much time he'll be expected to miss. Though Kubel hasn't started for the D'Backs since Tuesday, he was able to record a single during a pinch-hitting appearance on Friday night.
Description: D'Backs second baseman Aaron Hill won't be in the starting lineup Saturday versus the Dodgers. He's still recovering from a hand injury he suffered earlier in the week.
Insight: Saturday will be Hill's third consecutive absence. He hasn't been ruled out for Sunday's 4:10 pm start so it's possible Hill could be back before the end of the series. Josh Wilson will get the start at second on Saturday.
Description: Diamondbacks 3B/OF Martin Prado is an ugly 1-for-15 (.067) against Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw.
Insight: Prado is batting .373 with a homer, four RBIs and 10 runs through nine games. With Prado, Paul Goldschmidt, Miguel Montero and Jason Kubel all batting .200 or less against Kershaw all Diamondbacks players should probably be avoided on Friday.
Description: Arizona lefty Wade Miley won his second game of the season Wednesday against the Pirates. He held Pittsburgh to two runs on five hits, walked three and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings.
Insight: Miley dealt with dead arm this spring and was uncertain to make his first start but he has allowed just three earned runs over his first 12 2/3 innings. He has been throwing just as hard as he did last season.
Description: Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero is a career .417 hitter versus Pittsburgh starter Jonathan Sanchez with a pair of homers and a 1.378 OPS.
Insight: Montero is off to a solid start, batting .296 with a homer and six RBI. He's a decent fantasy option (.286, 65 runs, 15 HR, 88 RBI, .829 OPS in 2012), though he seemed to plateau last season, failing to greatly improve on the promise of 2011.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin won his first start of 2013 with six solid innings against Milwaukee Saturday night. He scattered eight hits, walked one, allowed two runs and struck out two.
Insight: Corbin was a former second-round pick by the Angels who came over in the Dan Haren trade. He went 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 107 innings as a rookie, but he had a 4.00 FIP and showed potential by going 4-4 with a 3.41 ERA over his first 58 innings.
Description: Diamondbacks CF Gerardo Parra continues to rake early this season. He had two hits and a walk Saturday and is now hitting .458.
Insight: Parra was supposed to start the season as the fourth outfielder but injuries to Cody Ross and Adam Eaton made him the starting center fielder. He is 11 for his first 24 with six extra-base hits and four runs.
Description: Arizona third baseman Martin Prado is just 1-for-12 (.083) against Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia.
Insight: Prado is still struggling to find his swing, batting just .214 this spring. He has hit .300 or better in four of his last five seasons and should be able to improve on his 10 homers from 2012 since he'll be playing half his games at hitter-friendly Chase Field.
Description: D'Backs right fielder Cody Ross could be back in the lineup a week from Monday if he doesn't suffer any setbacks. Ross injured his calf during spring training and is currently on the disabled list. SOURCE: Jack Magruder, Fox Sports Arizona
Insight: He's scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Visalia on Thursday and he should be back in the big leagues shortly after that. Gerrardo Parra is getting the start in right Monday in Arizona's season opener against the Cardinals.
Description: Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin will begin the season as the team's fifth starter.
Insight: Corbin went 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 107 innings as a rookie. He showed some potential by going 4-4 with a 3.41 ERA over his first 58 innings, but allowed 32 earned runs in his final 49 innings (5.88 ERA).
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has signed a five-year, $32 million contract extension with a team option for 2019.
Insight: Goldschmidt displayed big-time power as a late-season callup in 2011, when he hit eight homers in 48 games. While he only had 20 homers last season, he hit .286, scored 82 runs, drove in 82, stole 18 bases and had an .850 OPS, making him one of the best all-around first baseman in fantasy baseball.
Description: MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports that D'Backs shortstop Willie Bloomquist will begin the season on the DL after suffering a strained oblique.
Insight: Bloomquist is a pretty puzzling guy when it comes to fantasy. His batting average was solid last season (.302) but he didn't leave the yard in any of his 324 at bats and he got thrown out 10 times on the base paths (just seven steals). At age 35, he's already reached his ceiling. We'd pass on him on draft day.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Jason Kubel left Tuesday's game with left ankle discomfort but he took seven at-bats and ran the bases in a minor league game Wednesday. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com.
Insight: The Diamondbacks have experienced injuries to outfielders Adam Eaton and Cody Ross this spring but Kubel is good to go. He hit .253 with an .833 OPS and 30 homers last season.
Description: Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill was in Wednesday's lineup after leaving Tuesday following a HBP.
Insight: Hill was hit in the hand but it appears to be a non-issue. He was a valuable fantasy property in 2012, as he hit .302 with 26 homers, 85 RBIs, 14 steals, 93 runs and an .882 OPS at a shallow position.
Description: Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill left Tuesday's game after being hit in the hand by a Jered Weaver pitch.
Insight: Hill was a valuable fantasy property in 2012, as he hit .302 with 26 homers, 85 RBIs, 14 steals, 93 runs and an .882 OPS at a shallow position. Hopefully he was removed for precautionary reasons.
Description: Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said that starter Wade Miley (dead arm) will start the season's fourth game if he comes out of Saturday's game against the Reds without an issue. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com
Insight: Miley has only thrown 7 1/3 innings this spring due to a dead arm. The lefty went 16-11 with a 3.33 ERA and 1.18 WHIP as a rookie by keeping runners off base (1.71 BB/9) and allowing just 14 homers in 194 2/3 innings. If his 6.9 percent HR/FB rate regresses to league average, his ERA probably will dip as well to the 3.70 range.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross (calf) is likely to start the season on the disabled list, according to Nick Piecoro of azcentral.com.
Insight: Ross says he's still aiming for Opening Day but Piecoro said it sounds like the Diamondbacks are leaning towards the DL. With Adam Eaton sidelined for 6-8 weeks with an elbow injury and Ross headed for the DL, look for Jason Kubel and Gerardo Parra to play every day in April.
Description: D'Backs outfielder Adam Eaton will be out 6-to-8 weeks after suffering a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.
Insight: The injury occurred Monday in an exhibition game against the Dodgers. UCL's are always a little tricky and the eight week timetable might be a bit generous. Now that Eaton is on the shelf, Gerraro Parra will begin the season as Arizona's everyday center fielder.
Description: Arizona Diamondbacks starter Daniel Hudson, who had successful Tommy John surgery last July, was moved to the 60-day DL and isn't expected back until the All-Star break ... at the earliest.
Insight: Hudson was dominant when he first arrived in Arizona in the second half of 2010 (7-1, 1.69 ERA, 0.841 WHIP), but has done nothing since. It's time to let him go, even in keeper leagues.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross, sidelined by a left leg calf strain, should begin the next level of rehab activites, including running by early next week if he's going to be back for Opening Day.
Insight: Ross can still be ready if he doesn't have any setbacks, but we will know more next week. The outfielder hit 22 homers with an .807 OPS in 476 at-bats with the Red Sox last season and is expected to start in right field for Arizona. If he can't go then Gerardo Parra would likely get the start.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Eaton has lived up to the hype this spring with a .370 average and two homers in 46 at-bats.
Insight: Eaton received a callup in September after tearing up the PCL with a .381 batting average, 46 doubles, five triples, seven homers, 119 runs scored and 38 steals in 119 games with Triple-A Reno. Eaton has solid plate discipline (83/67 K/BB in 141 games) and is expected to lead off and play center field for the Diamondbacks this season.
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop prospect Didi Gregorius (elbow) is scheduled to make his spring debut Thursday against the Brewers, but he will be limited to DH duty. SOURCE: Diamondbacks.com
Insight: Gregorius is working his way back from a strained UCL. The defense-first shortstop was acquired from Cincinnati in a three-team trade that sent Trevor Bauer to Cleveland and Shin Soo-Choo to the Reds. He's expected to start the season in Triple-A Reno.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross will miss 2-3 weeks with a lower left leg strain, manager Kirk Gibson said Tuesday.
Insight: Ross can still be ready for Opening Day if he doesn't have any setbacks. The outfielder hit 22 homers with an .807 OPS in 476 at-bats with the Red Sox last season and is expected to start in right field for Arizona.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy fanned four batters in two innings Wednesday in his first game action since taking a line drive off the head nearly six months ago when he was with Oakland.
Insight: McCarthy had to undergo emergency brain surgery last season after being struck in the head. He signed a two-year deal with Arizona in December and slots in as the fourth starter behind Ian Kennedy, former Athletics teammate Trevor Cahill and Wade Miley. McCarthy induces a lot of ground balls, which should help him keep the ball in the park at Chase Field.
Description: The Cubs traded outfielder Tony Campana to the Diamondbacks on Monday.
Insight: Chicago acquired pitchers Erick Leal and Jesus Castillo in the deal. Campana is an excellent base stealer (30 thefts on 33 attempts last season) but he's useless in every other fantasy category (.264, 0 HR, 5 RBI in 89 games in 2012).
Description: Arizona outfielder Gerardo Parra hopes to be part of a four-man group and get a solid share of the available at-bats. Manager Kirk Gibson told MLB.com that he hopes the team can get Parra, Adam Eaton, Jason Kubel and Cody Ross 400-500 at-bats each.
Insight: Kubel and Eaton and Ross figure to start the season as the outfield, but Parra was a solid contributor last year (.273, 58 runs, 7 HR, 36 RBI, 15 SB) and could change the manager's plans if he has a hot spring.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill changed his diet in the offseason and lost between 10-15 pounds in order to become a better fielder. SOURCE: Arizona Republic
Insight: Cahill made five errors in 32 starts last season. He finished with a 13-12 record, 3.78 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. Being in better shape can't hurt his chances at improving those numbers in his second season in Arizona. "He’s a totally different guy," D-Backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "His body is different. I think he’s worked a lot on his athleticism. He’s leaned out."
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop prospect Didi Gregorius, who was acquired in a three-team deal that saw Trevor Bauer go to Cleveland, has a slight UCL strain in his throwing elbow. SOURCE: Diamondbacks.com
Insight: The injury has kept Gregorius from swinging a bat or throwing for the past month. Arizona GM Kevin Towers said the shortstop is likely two weeks away from starting a throwing program. As a result, he will miss the start of the regular season. Gregorius projects as more of a defensive shortstop and isn't going to be a huge fantasy factor this season. Cliff Pennington, Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald will vie for the starting shortstop job in spring training.
Description: Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers said he would like to give the leadoff spot to outfielder Adam Eaton this season "because of the speed he brings." SOURCE: Jack Magruder, FOXSportsArizona.com
Insight: Eaton hit .259 with two homers, five RBIs, 19 runs and two steals in 22 games with the D-Backs last season. He received a callup in September after tearing up the PCL with a .381 batting average, 46 doubles, five triples, seven homers, 119 runs scored and 38 steals in 119 games with Triple-A Reno. Eaton has solid plate discipline (83/67 K/BB in 141 games) and would serve fantasy owners well as the leadoff hitter for Arizona.
Description: Jon Heyman from CBS reports that the Diamondbacks have inked veteran catcher Rod Barajas to a minor league contract.
Insight: Barajas spent his first five seasons in Arizona, winning a World Series there in 2001. He split playing time with Michael McKenry in Pittsburgh last season, producing a .206 average and 11 homers in 321 at bats.
Description: Arizona has signed third baseman Martin Prado to a four-year, $40 million contract extension through 2016 to avoid arbitration. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, FOXSports.com
Insight: The Diamondbacks acquired Prado last week from the Braves in the trade for Justin Upton. Prado has hit .300 or better in four of his last five seasons and should be able to improve on his 10 homers from 2012 since he'll be playing half his games at Chase Field.
Description: Now that Justin Upton has been traded to Atlanta, Arizona probably won't look to deal outfielder Jason Kubel.
Insight: The Diamondbacks had been in talks with the Orioles about a trade for Kubel but that was before the Braves entered the mix for Upton. Kubel's first season in the desert was a success (.253, 30 HR, 90 RBI) and we'd expect the 30-year-old to be just as productive in 2013.
Description: Ken Rosenthal from Fox reports that the Orioles and Diamondbacks are discussing a deal that would send outfielder Jason Kubel to Baltimore.
Insight: Kubel displayed nice power last season en route to his first 30 homer campaign. Kubel became expendable when the D'Backs inked outfielder Cody Ross to a three-year contract earlier this offseason.
Description: Fox's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Braves have submitted a "strong" trade offer for Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton.
Insight: Acquiring Upton would give the Braves an outfield of two Uptons (Justin and brother B.J.) and Jason Heyward. It would probably also take Atlanta out of the running for speedy free agent Michael Bourn, who hit .274 with nine homers and 42 stolen bases for the Braves in 2012.
Description: Arizona has signed closer J.J. Putz to a one-year contract extension worth $7 million. SOURCE: Nick Piecoro, Arizona Republic
Insight: Putz has saved 77 games with a sub-3.00 ERA over the last two seasons after spending 2009 and 2010 as a middle reliever. He'll have to keep it up to hold off Heath Bell and David Hernandez this season.
Description: According to Evan Grant at the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers are "moving on" from Justin Upton.
Insight: The D'Backs and Rangers have been talking about an Upton trade for months now but they've never been close to finishing the deal. Upton recently rejected a trade that would have made him a Mariner. Upton is still likely to be traded though Texas now appears to be off limits.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton rejected a trade that would have sent him to the Seattle Mariners for prospects. SOURCE: FOXSports.com
Insight: The M's are one of four clubs on Upton's no-trade list, which is good for fantasy owners. Seattle's lineup wouldn't offer him much protection and Safeco Field ranked last in the MLB in MLB Park Factor for runs (0.687) while Chase Field was sixth (1.171). It seems that the Diamondbacks are determined to deal Upton prior to the 2013 season, however, so a trade could still happen soon.
Description: The New York Post's Mark Feinsand reports Arizona has signed outfielder Cody Ross to a three-year deal worth $26 million.
Insight: Arizona didn't really need another outfielder with Jason Kubel, Justin Upton and Gerardo Parra already on the roster, so now the team could look to unload either Upton or Kubel in a trade later this offseason. Ross is hitting .206 in 22 career games at Arizona's Chase Field.
Description: The Diamondbacks have reached an agreement with righthander Brandon McCarthy on a new two-year, $15.5 million deal according to the Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro.
Insight: A solid acquisition for the D'Backs, who are also said to be pursuing James Shields in a potential four-team swap. If McCarthy can stay healthy, he should be just as good as he was a year ago (8-6, 3.24 ERA in 18 starts).
