Seattle Mariners Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Blake Beavan, SP4/16/2014 8:49:00 PM
Description: The Mariners have gone ahead and placed right-hander Blake Beavan on the 15-day DL.
Insight: He lasted only four innings last night against Texas because of tightness in his throwing shoulder. Beavan owns a 4.61 ERA in 54 major league appearances and has never been a fantasy option.
Taijuan Walker, SP4/16/2014 8:29:00 PM
Description: Seattle starting pitcher Taijuan Walker will be shut down for the next two weeks after feeling stiffness in his shoulder warming up before Tuesday's rehab game with Triple-A Tacoma. SOURCE: Bob Dutton, Tacoma News Tribune
Insight: That's not what the Mariners wanted to hear. Walker sported a nifty 3.60 ERA in three starts last season but has yet to pitch at the big league level in 2014.
Logan Morrison, 1B4/16/2014 3:48:00 PM
Description: The Mariners have placed 1B/OF Logan Morrison on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Morrison left Monday's game with a right hamstring strain. He's 3-for-20 this season and isn't a fantasy option. Nick Franklin was called up and could see time in the outfield.
Nick Franklin, 2B 4/16/2014 11:54:00 AM
Description: The Mariners have called up SS Nick Franklin from Triple-A Tacoma. Franklin went 17-for-43 (.395) with four homers in his first 11 games at Triple-A to earn a callup.
Insight: Brad Miller, who won the shortstop job with a hot spring, hit two homers in the second game of the year but has batted .214 with a 19/1 K/BB in 56 at-bats this season. Franklin is a former first-round pick and top prospect who started off with a .277 average and 10 HRs in his first 52 games last year but hit .167 with two homers in his final 50. He could see some outfield duty with Logan Morrison (hamstring) out, according to Jon Heyman of cbssports.com.
Justin Smoak, 1BCold4/16/2014 10:47:00 AM
Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak started off 6-for-13 with two homers and seven RBI but he's gone 6-for-36 (.167) with zero homers and 11 Ks since then.
Insight: Smoak also is 2-for-16 against Texas starter Yu Darvish, who will oppose the Mariners on Wednesday night.
Dustin Ackley, LF4/16/2014 10:45:00 AM
Description: Seattle left fielder Dustin Ackley has gone 3-for-18 (.167) with five Ks against Rangers ace Yu Darvish.
Insight: Ackley was sent to the minors in May last year and revived his career after being recalled by hitting .301 with a .795 OPS in his last 61 games. He has started out by batting .295 with one homer, seven RBI and an .803 OPS in 12 games this season, but he's never had success against Darvish.
Kyle Seager, 3BCold4/16/2014 10:42:00 AM
Description: Mariner third baseman Kyle Seager has had some success against Texas starter Yu Darvish.
Insight: Seager has been a disaster so far, hitting .146 with zero homers and two RBI. He does have a .316 average, four doubles and seven RBI in 19 career at-bats against Darvish, however, so maybe he'll get it going Wednesday despite facing the tough right-hander.
Blake Beavan, SP 4/15/2014 11:03:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Blake Beavan's arm was tight all night and manager Lloyd McClendon lifted him after four innings on Tuesday at Texas. SOURCE: Greg Johns, mlb.com
Insight: Beavan allowed two runs on six hits (two HR) in four innings in his first appearance of the season. He had a 6.13 ERA in 39 2/3 innings last season and struck out just 67 batters in 152 1/3 frames the year before, so he isn't a fantasy option.
Taijuan Walker, RP4/15/2014 8:15:00 PM
Description: Mariners RHP Taijuan Walker was scratched from his rehab start on Tuesday due to a stiffness in his shoulder, according to Greg Johns of mlb.com. He had trouble getting loose prior to the game.
Insight: Walker has been making good progress in his recovery from the shoulder discomfort he dealt with during spring training and was in line to rejoin the Mariners after Tuesday's start, but this will set him back into May if not longer.
Logan Morrison, 1B4/14/2014 9:00:00 PM
Description: Mariners 1B/OF Logan Morrison left Monday's game with a tight right hamstring, according to Greg Johns of mlb.com.
Insight: Morrison left before he even got his first at-bat and was replaced by Michael Saunders in right field. Morrison is 3-for-20 this season and isn't a fantasy option.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP4/14/2014 8:26:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) will throw a 45-pitch simulated game Saturday, according to Greg Johns of mlb.com.
Insight: Iwakuma suffered a strained tendon in his right hand on Jan. 20 when he caught his finger in the net of a protective screen while attempting to catch a high throw. He's expected to be back in early May.
Dustin Ackley, LF4/13/2014 1:20:00 PM
Description: Seattle left fielder Dustin Ackley is not in the lineup for Sunday's series finale against Oakland. SOURCE: Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area
Insight: This will be Ackley's first absence of the season. Willie Bloomquist (.500, 0 HR, 0 RBI) will hold down the fort in left field on Sunday.
James Paxton, SP4/11/2014 8:51:00 PM
Description: Seattle starter James Paxton (lat) is unlikely to throw for at least a week, according to Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune.
Insight: Paxton went 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA, a 0.67 WHIP and a 13/2 K/BB in 12 innings before suffering a strained lat. Keep him stashed, as he is one of Seattle's top prospects and will get his rotation spot back when he's healthy.
Taijuan Walker, RP4/9/2014 10:26:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Taijuan Walker (shoulder) struck out 10 batters over five innings during his rehab start with Double-A Jackson Wednesday. SOURCE: Greg Johns, mlb.com
Insight: He threw 84 pitches, allowed three hits, walked one and gave up zero runs. Walker could be ready to return to the M's after this outing.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP4/9/2014 7:59:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) threw his first bullpen session Wednesday, according to Greg Johns of mlb.com, and he'll throw another on Saturday.
Insight: Iwakuma suffered a strained tendon in his right hand on Jan. 20 when he caught his finger in the net of a protective screen while attempting to catch a high throw. He's expected to be back in late April or early May.
James Paxton, SP4/9/2014 10:54:00 AM
Description: Seattle starter James Paxton suffered a strained lat Tuesday in a victory over Los Angeles. SOURCE: Larry Stone, Seattle Times
Insight: Paxton surrendered four hits and three runs before exiting. He's probably headed to the disabled list. Taijuan Walker, who is close to returning from a shoulder injury, is likely to absorb Paxton's place in the starting rotation.
Corey Hart, DH4/9/2014 10:09:00 AM
Description: Seattle DH Corey Hart rewarded his fantasy owners by smacking two homers Tuesday in a win over Los Angeles.
Insight: Three of Hart's five hits this season have left the stadium. He'll be a work in progress coming back from knee surgery but it's good to see that the power is still there.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP4/6/2014 3:38:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) will throw his first bullpen session in the middle of this week, according to Greg Johns of mlb.com.
Insight: Iwakuma suffered a strained tendon in his right hand on Jan. 20 when he caught his finger in the net of a protective screen while attempting to catch a high throw. He's expected to be back in late April or early May.
Felix Hernandez, SPHot4/5/2014 8:05:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Felix Hernandez came close to his 10th career shutout Saturday at Oakland but he gave up a solo homer to Jed Lowrie in the ninth.
Insight: The M's removed Hernandez after that and he finished with 8 1/3 frames, eight strikeouts, one walk and six hits allowed in a 3-1 win. He has given up three earned runs and posted a 19/2 K/BB in his first 14 1/3 innings this season.
Taijuan Walker, RP4/5/2014 3:40:00 PM
Description: Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said that Taijuan Walker (shoulder) could be back in 10 days, according to Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle.
Insight: That's earlier than expected. Walker threw 72 pitches in his first rehab start Friday and should get 85-90 in his next one.
Taijuan Walker, RP4/2/2014 3:48:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Taijuan Walker (shoulder) will make a rehab start on Friday.
Insight: Walker will likely need three starts before he's ready to return to the big club. Think the end of April for his return. He had a 2.93 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 141 1/3 innings in the minors last season and went 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA, 1.000 WHIP and 12 Ks in 15 innings in three major league starts. He's got a bright future.
Robinson Cano, 2B3/31/2014 2:53:00 PM
Description: Seattle second baseman Robinson Cano has dominated Jered Weaver throughout his career (.400 AVG in 30 at bats).
Insight: Weaver went 1-1 against the Mariners with a 3.29 ERA last season but that was while Cano was still playing for the Yankees. The Mariners don't have many other threats in their lineup so Weaver can probably afford to pitch around Cano on Monday night.
Taijuan Walker, RP3/30/2014 7:59:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitching prospect Taijuan Walker (shoulder) threw 55 pitches over four innings in a minor league game Sunday and will start for Class A-Advanced High Desert in five days. SOURCE: Greg Johns, mlb.com.
Insight: Walker arrived at camp with shoulder inflammation and will miss most of April. He had a 2.93 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 141 1/3 innings in the minors last season and is considered one of the top prospects in baseball. He'll join Seattle's rotation once he is healthy.
Corey Hart, 1B3/30/2014 7:52:00 PM
Description: Mariners 1B/OF Corey Hart won't play on Opening Day but will DH the following two games, according to Greg Johns of mlb.com.
Insight: Hart missed all of 2013 after he underwent two knee surgeries and has dealt with forearm and back soreness this spring. He averaged 141 games, .279 with 29 homers, 83 RBI, 87 runs and an .857 OPS from 2010-12, when he was with the Brewers.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP3/30/2014 7:50:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) will progress to throwing bullpen session in about 10 days, according to Greg Johns of mlb.com.
Insight: Iwakuma suffered a strained tendon in his right hand on Jan. 20 when he caught his finger in the net of a protective screen while attempting to catch a high throw. He's expected to be back in late April or early May.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP3/28/2014 8:29:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) has been cleared to proceed with a normal throwing program, according to Greg Johns of mlb.com.
Insight: Iwakuma suffered a strained tendon in his right hand on Jan. 20 when he caught his finger in the net of a protective screen while attempting to catch a high throw. He's expected to be back in late April or early May.
Corey Hart, 1B3/28/2014 6:25:00 PM
Description: Mariners 1B/OF Corey Hart is expected to play in Seattle's spring training finale on Saturday, according to Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune. He has dealt with forearm and back soreness this spring but played in a minor league game on Wednesday and Thursday.
Insight: Hart missed all of 2013 after he underwent two knee surgeries and will be the Mariners everyday DH in 2014. Hart averaged 141 games, .279 with 29 homers, 83 RBI, 87 runs and an .857 OPS from 2010-12, when he was with the Brewers.
Scott Baker, SP3/25/2014 10:13:00 PM
Description: Right-hander Scott Baker is close to signing with Texas. SOURCE: Chris Cotillo, SB Nation
Insight: Baker was released by the Mariners on Monday. The Rangers could definitely use another arm, especially now that Yu Darvish is out with a neck injury. Even if Baker (4.14 ERA in 166 MLB appearances) does make the Rangers' starting rotation, he won't be an appealing fantasy option.
Randy Wolf, SP3/25/2014 7:07:00 PM
Description: Seattle released left-hander Randy Wolf on Tuesday.
Insight: Wolf missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He posted a 4.26 ERA in five starts this spring before getting cut.
Scott Baker, SP3/24/2014 9:57:00 PM
Description: The Mariners have granted Scott Baker his release. SOURCE: Chris Cotillo, SB Nation
Insight: Baker knew he wasn't going to make the team's starting rotation. The right-hander is now over a year removed from Tommy John surgery, though he's struggled to regain his velocity.
Brad Miller, SSHot3/23/2014 1:38:00 PM
Description: Mariners shortstop Brad Miller has hit .467 with four doubles, four triples, four homers and a 10/5 K/BB this spring.
Insight: Miller batted .265 with eight homers, 36 RBI, 41 runs and five steals over 76 games as a rookie last year after putting up a .334 average, 27 home runs and 30 steals in 219 minor league games (including .356 with Triple-A Tacoma). He is expected to start at shortstop this season and has great sleeper value.
Corey Hart, 1B3/23/2014 12:44:00 PM
Description: Mariners 1B/OF Corey Hart is expected to spend most of his time at DH early in the season, according to Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune.
Insight: Hart missed all of 2013 after he underwent two knee surgeries. Starting him at DH will open up everyday spots for Michael Saunders and Abraham Almonte in the outfield. Hart averaged 141 games, .279 with 29 homers, 83 RBI, 87 runs and an .857 OPS from 2010-12, when he was with the Brewers.
Taijuan Walker, RP3/22/2014 6:59:00 PM
Description: Mariners top prospect Taijuan Walker (shoulder) made his first spring training appearance Saturday, throwing one inning in a minor league game.
Insight: According to the Seattle Times, Walker's fastball ranged from 93-96 mph and his change-up showed decent movement. The right-hander arrived at camp with shoulder inflammation and will miss the first few weeks of the season. Walker had a 2.93 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 141 1/3 innings in the minors last season and is considered one of the top prospects in baseball.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP3/18/2014 6:17:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) has been cleared to do range-of-motion exercises and will begin playing catch with a tennis ball Friday before progressing to throwing a baseball next week, according to Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune.
Insight: Iwakuma suffered a strained tendon in his right hand on Jan. 20 when he caught his finger in the net of a protective screen while attempting to catch a high throw. He's expected to miss most of April.
Robinson Cano, 2B3/16/2014 10:59:00 AM
Description: Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano has left the team due to personal reasons. He's expected to return after Seattle's off day on Monday. SOURCE: Greg Johns, MLB.com
Insight: Cano is currently in his native Dominican Republic. He's had an excellent spring, hitting .609 over 23 at bats. This brief absence should have no effect on Cano's draft position in fantasy leagues.
Jesus Montero, DH3/14/2014 6:32:00 PM
Description: Mariners C/DH Jesus Montero was sent to the minors Friday, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: Montero reported to camp 40 pounds overweight after serving a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal last season, so he's not in the Mariners' good graces at the moment. He did go 9-for-29 with two homers and a .976 OPS this spring, though.
Dustin Ackley, OFHot3/14/2014 3:58:00 PM
Description: Mariners outfielder Dustin Ackley is hitting .452 this spring with seven extra base hits and a 1.259 OPS.
Insight: Ackley batted .304 after the All-Star break last season and this could be the sign that fantasy owners need assuring them that the second half of 2013 wasn't a fluke. With the offseason addition of 2B Robinson Cano, Ackley should be a full-time outfielder this season.
Taijuan Walker, RP3/13/2014 5:10:00 PM
Description: Mariners top prospect Taijuan Walker, who has been deailing with shoulder soreness, threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Thursday and said that it was a relief to "feel normal again," according to Greg Johns of mlb.com.
Insight: Walker arrived at camp with shoulder inflammation and was shut down in late February. He's doubtful for the start of the season but should only have to miss a few starts early in the year. Walker had a 2.93 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 141 1/3 innings in the minors last season and is considered one of the top prospects in baseball.
Corey Hart, 1B3/12/2014 5:56:00 PM
Description: Mariners 1B/OF Corey Hart says his forearm soreness and back tightness are minor issues, according to Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune.
Insight: The good news is that his knees are fine after he underwent two knee surgeries last season and missed the entire year. Hart averaged 141 games, .279 with 29 homers, 83 RBI, 87 runs and an .857 OPS from 2010-12 and will start in right field for the M's.
Taijuan Walker, RP3/4/2014 5:37:00 PM
Description: Mariners top prospect Taijuan Walker, who has been deailing with shoulder soreness, is scheduled to begin throwing again Thursday, according to Bob Dutton of The Tacoma News Tribune.
Insight: Walker arrived at camp with shoulder inflammation and was shut down last week. He had a 2.93 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 141 1/3 innings in the minors last season and is considered one of the top prospects in baseball, but is doubtful for the start of the season.
Kyle Seager, 3B3/3/2014 6:20:00 PM
Description: Mariner third baseman Kyle Seager (thumb) is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday, according to Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune.
Insight: Seager jammed his finger last week. The 26-year-old has hit 20+ homers in each of the last two seasons, and his fantasy value should only improve with Robinson Cano in the lineup.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP2/28/2014 9:18:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma will keep his splint on for three more weeks before beginning to throw, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: He suffered a strained tendon in his right hand on Jan. 20 when he caught his finger in the net of a protective screen while attempting to catch a high throw and was shut down for 4-6 weeks on Feb. 12. Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said previously that Iwakuma won't join the rotation until he is conditioned to work at least six innings, and that typically takes four spring starts. Look for him to return no earlier than mid-April.
Taijuan Walker, RP2/28/2014 2:19:00 PM
Description: Mariners top prospect Taijuan Walker, who had been deailing with minor shoulder soreness, will be shut down for seven days.
Insight: We guess it's not minor. He had a 2.93 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 141 1/3 innings in the minors last season. As long as the injury doesn't last too long he should be a viable fantasy option.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP2/27/2014 4:39:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma will see a doctor on Friday to have his strained middle finger reevaluated, according to Greg Johns of mlb.com.
Insight: He suffered the injury on Jan.
Corey Hart, 1B2/27/2014 4:34:00 PM
Description: Mariners 1B/OF Corey Hart (knee) will make his Cactus League debut on Friday, according to Greg Johns of mlb.com.
Insight: Hart has been dealing with some tenderness in his knee when moving from side to side, but manager Lloyd McClendon says he's fine. He underwent two knee surgeries last season and missed the entire year. Hart averaged 141 games, .279 with 29 homers, 83 RBI, 87 runs and an .857 OPS from 2010-12.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP2/23/2014 12:32:00 PM
Description: The Mariners are cautiously optimistic that starter Hisashi Iwakuma can make a quick recovery from a strained tendon in his right middle finger, according to Bob Dutton of thenewstribune.com. Iwakuma's original recovery timetable was 4-to-6 weeks.
Insight: Iwakuma is scheduled to undergo another examination on March 3. He suffered the injury on Jan. 20 when he caught his finger in the net of a protective screen while attempting to catch a high throw. "Any injury to a pitching hand is serious," M's GM Jack Zduriencik said. "This one might not be as serious as we originally thought, which is a positive but we really won’t know that until he starts throwing a baseball." Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said previously that Iwakuma won't join the rotation until he is conditioned to work at least six innings, and that typically takes four spring starts.
Kendrys Morales, DH2/21/2014 8:25:00 PM
Description: The Orioles are expected to sign either Kendrys Morales or Nelson Cruz in free agency. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: Baltimore has holes to fill at left field and DH so either one would make sense. Morales (.277, 23 HR, 80 RBI for Seattle in 2013) can still bring it, though moving to the AL East is always a difficult transition.
Taijuan Walker, RP2/17/2014 1:59:00 PM
Description: Bob Dutton of newstribune.com reports that Mariners top prospect Taijuan Walker "felt great" after Monday's short throwing session. He's been deailing with minor shoulder soreness.
Insight: Walker, one of the top prospects in baseball, is expected to have a spot in Seattle's rotation this season. He had a 2.93 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 141 1/3 innings in the minors last season. As long as the injury doesn't return he should be a viable fantasy option.
Taijuan Walker, RP2/13/2014 3:59:00 PM
Description: Bob Dutton of newstribune.com reports that Mariners top prospect Taijuan Walker will be limited early in spring training due to minor shoulder soreness.
Insight: Walker, one of the top prospects in baseball, is expected to have a spot in Seattle's rotation this season. He had a 2.93 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 141 1/3 innings in the minors last season.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP2/12/2014 3:08:00 PM
Description: Seattle ace Hisashi Iwakuma will miss the next 4-to-6 weeks while he recovers from a strained tendon in his right hand. SOURCE: Ryan Divish, Seattle Times
Insight: Iwakuma is not going to be ready for Opening Day. Don't let the injury scare you too much though. Iwakuma finished third in Cy Young voting a year ago and is still one of the better pitching options in fantasy baseball heading into 2014.
Randy Wolf, SP2/11/2014 6:38:00 PM
Description: Journeyman lefthander Randy Wolf has caught on with the Mariners. SOURCE: Ryan Divish, Seattle Times
Insight: His signing should become official in the next 24 hours. It's only a minor league deal so Wolf will have to prove himself in spring training if he hopes to make the team. The 37-year-old last pitched in the major leagues in 2012 (5-10, 5.65 ERA in 30 games with Baltimore and Milwaukee).
Kendrys Morales, DH2/9/2014 3:21:00 PM
Description: The Pirates are moving in on free agent first baseman Kendrys Morales.
Insight: There's no deal in place but Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says both sides are interested. Morales would fill a huge need for Pittsburgh now that Garrett Jones (.233, 15 HR, 51 RBI) has signed with Miami. Though he hasn't looked the same since his devastating leg injury, Morales is still a safe bet for 20 HR and close to 100 RBI.
Fernando Rodney, RP2/6/2014 6:05:00 PM
Description: Former Rays closer Fernando Rodney has agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal with Seattle. SOURCE: Jonah Keri, Grantland
Insight: With Rodney at the back end of the bullpen, Felix Hernandez (12-10, 3.04 ERA) should be able to improve on his win total from last season. The pitcher-friendly confines of Safeco Field should help Rodney lower his ERA in 2014 (3.38 last season).
Scott Baker, SP1/29/2014 3:55:00 PM
Description: Righthander Scott Baker has agreed to a minor league deal with Seattle. SOURCE: Chris Cotillo, SB Nation
Insight: Baker looked sharp in his return from Tommy John surgery last September (3.60 ERA in three starts). We'll see if he has what it takes to crack the Mariners' starting rotation this spring.
Corey Hart, 1B1/28/2014 9:15:00 AM
Description: Mariners 1B/OF Corey Hart say he's encouraged by the progress of his surgically repaired knees in a Tacoma News Tribune report.
Insight: The newly acquired slugger is capable of hitting 30 homers if healthy and with all the left-handed hitters in the Mariners lineup would see plenty of at-bats if he's healthy. If he continues to improve and is ready for Opening Day he'll be an underrated fantasy option. Hart missed all of 2013 after having knee surgery, but he averaged .277 with 24 homers, 78 RBI and 70 runs per season from 2007-12 with the Brewers.
John Buck, C1/14/2014 7:06:00 PM
Description: The Mariners have agreed to a one-year, $1 million deal with catcher John Buck. SOURCE: Jon Heyman, CBS Sports
Insight: Buck smashed nine homers in April but only hit six more after that. He'll be a borderline fantasy player heading into the 2014 campaign.
Raul Ibanez, LF12/18/2013 11:23:00 AM
Description: The Angels are close to signing veteran outfielder/DH Raul Ibanez. SOURCE: Chris Cotillo, SB Nation
Insight: It sounds like it will be a one-year deal. Ibanez wasn't able to hit for a high average last season (.242) but his 29 homers led the team. With Mark Trumbo out of the picture, he could be an everyday DH.
Franklin Gutierrez, CF12/18/2013 10:41:00 AM
Description: Franklin Gutierrez will return to Seattle on a new one-year, $1 million deal. SOURCE: Enrique Rojas, ESPN Deportes
Insight: Gutierrez has been a 20/20 threat in the past but that was several years ago. Injuries have limited him to just 173 games over the last three seasons.
Corey Hart, 1B12/11/2013 3:42:00 PM
Description: The Mariners have signed 1B/OF Corey Hart to a one-year contract, according to Jon Heyman of cbssports.com. Ken Rosenthal of foxsports.com reports the deal is for $5 million with $8 million in incentives.
Insight: Hart missed all of 2013 after having knee surgery but he averaged .277/.335/.495 with 24 homers, 78 RBI and 70 runs per season from 2007-12 with the Brewers. He'll serve as a first baseman and designated hitter for Seattle.
Logan Morrison, 1B12/11/2013 3:38:00 PM
Description: The Marlins have traded 1B/OF Logan Morrison to the Mariners for pitcher Carter Capps, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.
Insight: Morrison hit 23 homers and had a .798 OPS in 2011 but has played just 178 games over the last two seasons with 17 homers, 72 RBI and a .708 OPS in that span. He's unlikely to be a strong fantasy option with the M's.
Robinson Cano, 2B12/6/2013 1:30:00 PM
Description: The Mariners and second baseman Robinson Cano have come to terms on a new 10-year, $240 million deal.
Insight: Cano is the crown jewel of this year's free agent class. He's a career .309 hitter with an .860 OPS. Cano won't have a great lineup around him but we're not concerned about it affecting his fantasy value. As far as second basemen go, he's the best there is.
Willie Bloomquist, SS12/2/2013 9:04:00 PM
Description: The Mariners inked shortstop Willie Bloomquist to a new two-year, $5.8 million deal on Monday. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: Bloomquist had spent his previous three seasons in Arizona. As long as he can stay healthy, Bloomquist should easily surpass the 139 at bats he logged last season.
Kendrys Morales, DH10/9/2013 8:27:00 PM
Description: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports doesn't expect designated hitter Kendrys Morales to accept his one-year, $14 million qualifying offer from Seattle.
Insight: By rejecting the offer, the Mariners are now entitled to a draft pick from whatever team decides to sign Morales as a free agent. The injury-prone Morales launched 23 homers in 156 games for the M's in 2013.
Danny Hultzen, RP10/1/2013 9:36:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen had shoulder surgery Tuesday to clean out a damaged labrum, repair a partially torn rotator cuff and fix a shoulder capsule, according to the Seattle Times.
Insight: Hultzen, the No. 2 overall pick in 2011, dealt with shoulder issues all season. He is without a timetable to return to the mound but could miss most of 2014.
Brad Miller, SSHot9/28/2013 7:37:00 PM
Description: Seattle shortstop Brad Miller bopped two homers in Saturday's win over Oakland.
Insight: By doing so, he assured the Red Sox home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Miller is 5-for-12 with five RBI in his last three games.
Kendrys Morales, DHHot9/28/2013 10:21:00 AM
Description: After going 2-for-3 with a solo homer Friday against the A's, Mariners DH Kendrys Morales has six longballs in September.
Insight: Morales has alternated good and bad months this season, hitting .343 with five homers and 23 RBI in May, .309 with seven homers and 18 RBI in July and .290 with six homers and 11 RBI in September. He hit a combined .247 with five home runs and 28 RBI in the other three months and is batting .281 with 23 bombs, 80 RBI and a .793 OPS in a career-high 649 plate appearances.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SPHot9/26/2013 12:34:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma wrapped up the season by going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in his final 23 innings.
Insight: Iwakuma will finish 14-6 with a 2.66 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP and 185 strikeouts in 219 2/3 innings after tossing eight scoreless innings Wednesday against the Royals. The right-hander had trouble with the longball early, allowing 21 of them in his first 131 1/3 innings, but he gave up just four in his last 88 1/3.
Kyle Seager, 3B9/24/2013 1:40:00 PM
Description: Seattle's Kyle Seager is a career .239 hitter versus left-handers, but he's 4-for-8 with a double and two home runs against Royals lefty Bruce Chen.
Insight: Seager has been ugly since July, batting .194 in August and .183 in September. Even this favorable matchup may not get him out of this major slump.
Brad Miller, SS9/23/2013 6:53:00 PM
Description: Mariners shortstop Brad Miller will start Monday's game against Kansas City. He missed Sunday's game with a sore hamstring.
Insight: Miller (.262, 6 HR, 31 RBI) has been solid in his rookie season. With many teams resting their starters at this stage of the season, Miller is one player you can expect to see in the lineup almost everyday.
Felix Hernandez, SP9/22/2013 7:49:00 PM
Description: Seattle ace Felix Hernandez (oblique) struck out 10 over four innings Sunday against the Angels in his first start since Sept. 2.
Insight: Hernandez has been out for three weeks with a strained oblique. He threw 93 pitches in his return to the mound Sunday, which explains why he left after four innings. He'll make one more start this season.
Kyle Seager, 3BCold9/22/2013 10:51:00 AM
Description: Seattle's Kyle Seager is 4-for-49 (.082) over his last 14 games and he'll see C.J. Wilson Sunday.
Insight: Seager has hit the skids at an inopportune time for fantasy owners, and he isn't going to get much help Sunday. He's 3-for-19 (.158) with seven strikeouts against Wilson.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP9/21/2013 11:03:00 AM
Description: The Mariners are considering shutting down Hisashi Iwakuma for the rest of the season. SOURCE: Mariners.com
Insight: He's scheduled to start Tuesday versus Kansas City but manager Eric Wedge indicated that nothing is definite yet. The uncertainty surrounding Iwakuma's next start doesn't seem to be injury-related. With the Mariners out of the playoff race, they can afford to experiment a little in the final week.
Felix Hernandez, SP9/19/2013 2:44:00 PM
Description: The plan is for Seattle ace Felix Hernandez (oblique) to start Sunday against the Angels, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: Hernandez' oblique strain has popped up at the worst time for fantasy owners. He hasn't started since Sept. 2.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP9/18/2013 10:49:00 PM
Description: Mariners righthander Hisashi Iwakuma got back in the win column with eight innings of shutout ball Wednesday against the Tigers.
Insight: It was Iwakuma's longest outing since June. He's had a magnificent year for the Mariners, compiling 13 wins and a 2.76 ERA in 32 starts. The righthander will make his final start of the year next week against the Royals.
Felix Hernandez, SP9/16/2013 8:27:00 PM
Description: Seattle righthander Felix Hernandez won't pitch Wednesday versus Detroit.
Insight: Hisashi Iwakuma (12-6, 2.87 ERA) will get the start in his place. Hernandez has now been sidelined two weeks because of an oblique injury. According to MLB.com's Greg Johns, the earliest we'd see Hernandez back would be Saturday or Sunday against the Angels.
Brad Miller, SS9/16/2013 12:09:00 PM
Description: Seattle shortstop Brad Miller will miss Monday's game against Detroit due to a hamstring injury.
Insight: Miller has batted .260 with six homers and 31 RBI in just 281 at-bats. Carlos Triunfel is likely to get the start in his place.
Brad Miller, SS9/15/2013 1:16:00 PM
Description: M's shortstop Brad Miller will have the day off to rest his hamstring Sunday against St. Louis.
Insight: Ryan Divish of the Tacoma Times says Miller will probably miss "at least a few days" with this injury. Carlos Triunfel is getting the start in his place.
James Paxton, SP9/14/2013 10:38:00 PM
Description: Mariners lefthander James Paxton (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5 K's, 2 BB) overwhelmed the Cardinals Saturday for his second win of the year.
Insight: So far, the September callup has done pretty well for himself. In two starts, opponents are only hitting .140 against him with eight strikeouts. Paxton's next start comes against the Tigers.
Brad Miller, SS9/14/2013 9:25:00 PM
Description: Mariners shortstop Brad Miller left Saturday's game with a strained hamstring. SOURCE: Geoff Baker, Seattle Times
Insight: It's considered a mild strain and he's listed as day-to-day. The rookie is hitting .260 this year with six homers in 281 at bats.
Felix Hernandez, SP9/13/2013 9:57:00 AM
Description: Mariners righthander Felix Hernandez is questionable for his next scheduled start with cramping in his lower back.
Insight: This comes after Hernandez had his start Sunday pushed back to Wednesday. He's hoping to throw a bullpen session this weekend. His last start was Sept. 2.
Abraham Almonte, CF9/13/2013 9:54:00 AM
Description: Mariners outfielder Abraham Almonte is questionable for Friday's game against St. Louis with tightness in his legs.
Insight: The youngster put up solid Triple-A numbers (.314, 11 HR, 50 RBI, .894 OPS in 94 games), but has been much less effective at the major league level and isn't on fantasy radars.
Kendrys Morales, DHHot9/12/2013 11:22:00 AM
Description: Mariners DH Kendrys Morales has hit four homers over his last eight games.
Insight: Morales batted .200 with zero round-trippers from Aug. 3 to Sept. 3 (28 games).
Taijuan Walker, RP9/10/2013 12:15:00 PM
Description: Mariners 21-year-old right-hander Taijuan Walker is expected to be shut down for the remainder of the season, according to mlb.com's Greg Johns.
Insight: Walker made three starts at the big league level after pitching 141 innings at Double-A and Triple-A. He went 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA and 1.00 WHIP for Seattle. Walker should be the No. 3 starter behind Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma next season.
Kyle Seager, 3B9/10/2013 11:58:00 AM
Description: Kyle Seager is hitless in eight career at-bats against Houston right-hander Jordan Lyles.
Insight: Seager has been one of the most consistent fantasy producers at his position this season (.278, 22 HR, 66 RBI). Still, he isn't a great option on Tuesday.
Felix Hernandez, SP9/9/2013 8:19:00 PM
Description: Mariners righthander Felix Hernandez won't be able to make his scheduled start Wednesday against Houston. He's still feeling the effects of an oblique injury. SOURCE: Greg Johns, MLB.com
Insight: This comes after Hernandez had his start Sunday pushed back to Wednesday. He's hoping to throw a bullpen session this weekend.
Felix Hernandez, SPCold9/5/2013 7:42:00 PM
Description: Seattle righthander Felix Hernandez was supposed to start Sunday versus Tampa Bay but now he's been moved back to Wednesday against Houston.
Insight: Hernandez (12-9, 3.01 ERA) experienced cramping in his lower back Monday versus Kansas City. After a Cy Young caliber first half, Hernandez hasn't been up to snuff since the All-Star break (2-5, 4.20 in nine appearances).
Kyle Seager, 3B9/4/2013 12:36:00 PM
Description: Kyle Seager has been one of the most consistent fantasy producers at his position this season (.282, 22 HR, 64 RBI). Still, he isn't a great option Wednesday against Ervin Santana.
Insight: Seager has mustered just three hits in 19 career at bats against him. If he wants to extend his hitting streak to six games, Seager will probably have to do it in the later innings when Santana (8-8, 3.19 ERA) is out of the game.
Brad Miller, SS9/2/2013 7:48:00 PM
Description: Seattle rookie shortstop Brad Miller is 19-for-55 (.345) over his last 13 games.
Insight: However, only two of those hits went for extra bases. That includes a triple Sunday against the Royals, his sixth in 236 at-bats this season.
Kyle Seager, 3B9/2/2013 7:43:00 PM
Description: Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager went 3-for-4 with a double Monday against the Royals.
Insight: Seager has posted two straight 20-homer seasons and this year has a significantly better average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage than 2012.
Felix Hernandez, SP9/2/2013 6:09:00 PM
Description: The Mariners pulled Felix Hernandez from Monday's start in the seventh inning due to a muscle spasm in his "side" area, according to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times.
Insight: Hernandez gave up six hits and three runs over 6 2/3 innings Monday against the Royals in his first start since allowing eight earned runs against the Rangers. The move to take him out was precautionary and he isn't expected to miss a start.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP9/1/2013 7:02:00 PM
Description: Seattle ace Hisashi Iwakuma fired seven scoreless innings Sunday against Houston.
Insight: The Mariners wasted another good outing from Iwakuma (7 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 7 K's, 1 BB) by not scoring any runs. They've averaged just two runs per game over Iwakuma's last six starts. Iwakuma's next start is Friday against Tampa Bay.
Dustin Ackley, 2BHot8/31/2013 4:39:00 PM
Description: Mariners outfielder Dustin Ackley is hitting .439 over his last 19 games.
Insight: Ackley went 4-for-5 with four RBI Friday and is 29-for-66 with six doubles, two triples, two homers and nine RBI since Aug. 7. The former second-overall pick failed to progress after a solid rookie season and was hitting just .213 prior to this stretch, but a hot streak like this cannot be ignored.
Taijuan Walker, RP8/31/2013 4:33:00 PM
Description: Mariners prospect Taijuan Walker won his major league debut Friday night against Houston, going five innings and allowing two hits and one unearned run.
Insight: Walker, a 21-year-old right-hander who is ranked as the No. 5 prospect in all of baseball by MLB.com, recorded a 2.93 ERA and 160 K over 141 1/3 innings in the minors this season. Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik said in July that the right-hander will have an innings limit, but didn't give an exact number. Still, he's worth adding in deeper leagues.
Kendrys Morales, DHCold8/29/2013 6:54:00 PM
Description: M's DH Kendrys Morales won't be in the lineup Thursday against Houston.
Insight: Morales hasn't had a day off since July 7th. He's hit just .174 during Seattle's six-game losing streak.
Michael Morse, RFCold8/29/2013 1:00:00 PM
Description: According to Jon Heyman, the Orioles have claimed Mariners right fielder Michael Morse off revocable waivers.
Insight: The O's also won claims on Josh Willingham and Jason Kubel. Joining the O's would be great for Morse, who has hit just .210 with a .640 OPS at Safeco Field this season. Morse, who will be a free agent this offseason, spent five weeks on the disabled list from June to July due to a strained quad and has hit just four home runs with a .214 average over 182 at-bats since May 3. He's just 3-for-32 (.094) over his last nine games.
Nick Franklin, 2BCold8/29/2013 9:36:00 AM
Description: Mariners second baseman Nick Franklin is 0-for-16 with eight K over his last five games.
Insight: Franklin is a pitiful 8-for-79 (.101) with 31 strikeouts over his last 20 games. The rookie's average has dropped from .276 to .227 in that span.
Felix Hernandez, SPCold8/28/2013 10:48:00 PM
Description: The Rangers massacred M's starter Felix Hernandez on Wednesday.
Insight: We haven't seen King Felix get knocked around like this in a while, though he does tend to struggle versus Texas (4-11 career record). In three innings, the former Cy Young winner allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits. Hernandez is now just 1-4 with a 7.00 ERA in his last five outings.
Michael Saunders, CF8/27/2013 10:05:00 AM
Description: Seattle center fielder Michael Saunders, who is still battling an injured neck missed Monday's game and is questionable for Tuesday's game against Texas.
Insight: Monday was Saunders' third consecutive absence. The good news is he was able to take batting practice on Monday. Perhaps he'll make an appearance later on in the series.
Michael Saunders, CF8/26/2013 9:13:00 PM
Description: Seattle center fielder Michael Saunders, who is still battling an injured neck, won't play Monday versus Texas. SOURCE: Greg Johns, MLB.com
Insight: Monday will be Saunders' third consecutive absence. The good news is he was able to take batting practice on Monday. Perhaps he'll make an appearance later on in the series.
Aaron Harang, SP8/26/2013 7:40:00 PM
Description: The Mariners designated righthander Aaron Harang for assignment on Monday.
Insight: Harang's tenure with the M's lasted all of four months. He's an innings eater so he shouldn't be on the market for too long.
Raul Ibanez, LFCold8/25/2013 11:38:00 AM
Description: Seattle left fielder Raul Ibanez is only hitting .198 with one homer since the All-Star break, but his matchup with Angels starter Jered Weaver Sunday is a good one for the veteran outfielder.
Insight: Ibanez, who hit .267 with 24 homers and an .892 OPS in the first half, is 15-for-33 (.455) with four homers against Weaver.
Kyle Seager, 3B8/23/2013 1:14:00 PM
Description: Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager is 6-for-11 (.545) against Angels starter Garrett Richards.
Insight: For the season he's batting .279 with 19 HR and 59 RBI, 69 runs and an .812 OPS. He has set or will set career highs in all those categories except the RBI total. Start him on Friday in this favorable matchup.
Danny Farquhar, SP8/21/2013 8:58:00 PM
Description: Mariners closer Danny Farquhar hasn't allowed a walk or a hit over his last four appearances (4-for-4 in save chances).
Insight: Farquhar has nine saves in 10 chances since taking over the closer role from Tom Wilhelmsen. In his blown save, he gave up four hits, a walk and two earned without getting an out, but in his nine saves he has given up two hits and no walks over 9 1/3 innings.
Michael Morse, RF8/21/2013 7:52:00 PM
Description: Mariners right fielder Michael Morse continued his dominance of Athletics starter A.J. Griffin Wednesday with a homer in the second inning.
Insight: Morse came in 5-for-6 with two doubles and a homer against Griffin. He went 2-for-4 Wednesday to snap out of a 0-for-16 slump and raise his average to .232. Morse has just two home runs since May.
Michael Morse, RF8/21/2013 10:55:00 AM
Description: Mariners right fielder Michael Morse is a career .833 hitter versus Oakland youngster A.J. Griffin.
Insight: Ok, he's only faced him six times, but Morse has a pair of doubles and a home run among his five knocks. Morse is batting .228 this season with 12 homers and 26 RBI over 71 games, but most of that damage was done in April. We're still waiting for that guy to return.
Nick Franklin, 2B8/21/2013 9:22:00 AM
Description: Mariners second baseman Nick Franklin left Tuesday's game with a laceration that could end up costing him up to a week of games, according to beat writer Shannon Drayer.
Insight: Franklin has been starting everyday at second base, batting .240 with 11 HR and 38 RBI in 68 games. Brendan Ryan came in to play shortstop and moved Brad Miller to second which won't help fantasy owners.
Erasmo Ramirez, SP8/18/2013 7:08:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitcher Erasmo Ramirez gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk in a no decision Sunday at Texas.
Insight: The 23-year-old right-hander went 4-0 in his first six appearances (five starts) after making his 2013 debut on July 11 despite posting a 7.06 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP with zero quality starts in that span. He had some hype after posting a 3.56 ERA in 136 1/3 innings between Triple-A and the majors last year but he missed the start of the season with an elbow injury and hasn't had the same level of success so far.
Danny Hultzen, RP8/15/2013 4:53:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen (shoulder) is a candidate to be shut down for the season, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.
Insight: Hultzen, the No. 2 overall pick in 2011, has made just one start since April 19 due to shoulder inflammation. He has a 2.20 ERA and 31 K in 28 2/3 innings with Triple-A Tacoma this season and will be a candidate for the rotation next year.
Danny Farquhar, SP8/14/2013 10:42:00 PM
Description: Seattle's Danny Farquhar had saved all five of his chances and allowed just two baserunners over 5 1/3 innings since taking over the closer role from Tom Wilhelmsen, but he came back to Earth Wednesday against the Rays.
Insight: Farquhar walked one and allowed four hits and two earned runs without getting an out to blow a 4-3 lead.
Justin Smoak, 1BHot8/13/2013 10:41:00 PM
Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak went 2-for-4 with two RBI Tuesday against the Rays.
Insight: Smoak has experienced a renaissance since returning to the majors following a three week stint in minors. He's hitting .306 with 10 homers and 25 RBI over his last 43 games.
Nick Franklin, 2BCold8/13/2013 10:38:00 PM
Description: Mariners second baseman Nick Franklin went 0-for-5 with two K Tuesday against the Rays and is just 3-for-41 (.073) with 15 K over his last nine games.
Insight: Franklin showed strong plate discipline early after being called up, but his strikeouts have been piling up as of late and his average is down to .242 after Tuesday's game.
Brad Miller, SS8/13/2013 10:34:00 PM
Description: Seattle rookie shortstop Brad Miller is hitting .308 with two doubles, two triples and two homers over his last 15 games.
Insight: Miller blasted two home runs Tuesday against Tampa Bay. He started off August hitting .333 in the first eight games but went 0-for-7 his last two games. He had a 1-for-18 (.056) slump last month, so it's good to see he didn't let this one get to that extent.
Felix Hernandez, SPHot8/11/2013 7:08:00 PM
Description: Seattle righthander Felix Hernandez was dominant in a win over the Brewers Sunday at Safeco Field.
Insight: In some ways, Hernandez is actually having a better year this year than he did when he won the Cy Young Award in 2010. His ERA is almost identical (2.28 this season, 2.27 in 2010), his strikeouts per nine innings is higher (9.22 this season, 8.36 in 2010) and he's on pace for 17 victories, which is four more than Hernandez recorded in 2010. King Felix will have a chance to add to his Cy Young resume next time out against Texas.
Franklin Gutierrez, CF8/11/2013 1:50:00 PM
Description: Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) has resumed his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma. His initial 20-day rehab stint expired last week and the team had to wait five days before starting a new one.
Insight: Gutierrez suffered a severe hamstring strain in April, missed two months and suffered another strain just two games after returning. He hasn't played since June 23.
Michael Morse, RF8/9/2013 10:50:00 AM
Description: Mariners right fielder Michael Morse is a career .467 hitter (7-for-15) versus Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse.
Insight: Morse is batting .242 this season with 12 homers and 26 RBI over 64 games, but most of that damage was done in April. He's only gotten 67 at bats since June 1 and done very little with them.
Tom Wilhelmsen, RP8/7/2013 7:19:00 PM
Description: The Mariners have demoted righthander Tom Wilhelmsen to Triple-A Tacoma. SOURCE: Greg Johns, MLB.com
Insight: There was even some discussion that he could be converted into a starter though manager Robby Thompson quickly put those rumors to bed. With Danny Farquhar on a roll right now, it doesn't look like he'll be relinquishing his closer duties any time soon. Wilhelmsen should be back in September but he's unlikely to close again this season.
Raul Ibanez, LF8/5/2013 11:53:00 AM
Description: Seattle left fielder Raul Ibanez is a career .367 hitter with three homers in 30 at-bats against Toronto right-hander R.A. Dickey.
Insight: Ibanez has cooled off significantly in the second half, batting just .175 without a home run in 14 games after blasting 24 long balls in 73 games before the All-Star break.
Danny Farquhar, SPHot8/4/2013 7:03:00 PM
Description: Danny Farquhar has emerged as Seattle's new closer.
Insight: Tom Wilhelmsen lost the closer's job earlier this week after a meltdown versus Boston (2 H, 4 ER without recording an out). As for Farquhar (0-0, 5.09 ERA), he hasn't allowed anyone to reach base in his last three outings and is now 2-for-2 in save opportunities.
Kyle Seager, 3B8/4/2013 9:52:00 AM
Description: Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager is putting together another productive season, but on Sunday faces a pitcher in Wei-Yin Chen against whom he has always struggled.
Insight: Seager is hitless in nine at-bats against Chen. For the season he's batting .298 with 17 HR and 51 RBI and is coming off a hot July (.396, 6 HR, 14 RBI).
Michael Saunders, CF8/3/2013 10:50:00 PM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders led the offensive attack on Saturday night with a pair of home runs and five RBI.
Insight: Saunders has hit safely in seven of eight games including four home runs. Still, he's not really put together a season that has fantasy owners interested on a long-term basis (.233, 10 HR, 37 RBI).
Kendrys Morales, DHHot8/2/2013 10:28:00 PM
Description: Mariners DH Kendrys Morales belted four hits Friday in a loss to Baltimore.
Insight: One of the hits was Morales' 17th home run of the season. He's 13-for-17 at the plate over his last four games (.765 AVG). Unfortunately for Morales, the Mariners have lost each of those games.
Tom Wilhelmsen, RPCold8/2/2013 7:28:00 PM
Description: Tom Wilhelmsen's ninth inning debacle Thursday against the Red Sox has cost him his job as closer. SOURCE: Geoff Baker, Seattle Times
Insight: The move appears to be temporary. We're guessing The Bartender will win back his ninth inning role sooner or later. Until then, he belongs on the waiver wire.
Tom Wilhelmsen, RP8/1/2013 10:44:00 PM
Description: The Mariners blew a 7-1 eighth-inning lead Thursday at Boston, and closer Tom Wilhelmsen was right in the middle of it. He surrendered four runs in the ninth inning without recording an out.
Insight: Wilhelmsen doesn't get credited with a blown save since he entered with a 7-2 lead or a loss because he didn't permit the final two runs, but it was damaging to fantasy owners nonetheless. The right-hander had allowed just one earned run and saved all six save chances in his previous 7 1/3 innings.
Kendrys Morales, DHHot8/1/2013 10:36:00 PM
Description: Seattle DH Kendrys Morales went 4-for-5 Thursday and was 9-for-13 with three RBI during the three-game series at Boston.
Insight: The Mariners opted to keep Morales at the trade deadline. The veteran has raised his average 13 points over the last three games and is batting .291 with 16 home runs and 61 RBI.
Felix Hernandez, SPHot8/1/2013 10:30:00 PM
Description: Mariners ace Felix Hernandez looked to have a win locked down Thursday at Boston -- he threw seven innings, struck out eight, allowed one run on six hits and left with a 7-1 lead -- but the Red Sox scored one in the eighth and six runs in the ninth to shock Seattle.
Insight: King Felix was coming off a start in which he gave up one run and struck out 11 over nine innings but took a no decision. He still hasn't lost since May and is 11-4 with a 2.30 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP, but this one is tough to stomach.
Michael Morse, RFCold8/1/2013 4:14:00 PM
Description: Mariners right fielder Michael Morse will have to watch from the sidelines Thursday against Boston.
Insight: Morse has gone 0-for-9 since returning from the DL on Tuesday. Endy Chavez is filling in at right field.
Jason Bay, LF7/31/2013 8:05:00 PM
Description: The Mariners have designated outfielder Jason Bay for assignment.
Insight: Michael Morse's return from the DL on Tuesday cost Bay his roster spot. Bay (.204, 11 HR, 20 RBI) hasn't had a productive season in the big leagues since 2009.
Raul Ibanez, LFCold7/31/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: Seattle left fielder Raul Ibanez hasn't homered since July 12 and is just 5-for-37 (.135) with 15 strikeouts over his last 10 games, but his matchup with John Lackey Wednesday makes him a good fantasy option.
Insight: Ibanez has faced the Red Sox starter 57 times in his career and is a .386 hitter with five doubles, one homer and five walks.
Michael Morse, RF7/29/2013 4:34:00 PM
Description: Seattle right fielder Michael Morse (quad) will return to the lineup Tuesday after being activated from the DL Monday.
Insight: Morse missed five weeks with a strained right quad. He's hitting .251 with 11 homers, 23 RBI and a .767 OPS in 56 games this season.
Nick Franklin, 2B7/28/2013 9:53:00 PM
Description: Mariners second baseman Nick Franklin cracked a couple of home runs Sunday against Minnesota.
Insight: The rookie drove in four runs. His strikeouts have been piling up -- he has fanned 31 times in 83 at-bats this month -- but he's hitting .277 with 10 longballs and 32 RBI in 51 games.
Mike Zunino, C7/26/2013 8:53:00 PM
Description: Mariners catcher Mike Zunino has been placed on the disabled list.
Insight: Zunino was hit by a foul tip Thursday against Minnesota and ended up breaking his hand on the play. He's expected to miss at least six weeks, which would sideline him until the middle of September. For now, Henry Blanco will see most of the playing time behind the plate.
Michael Morse, RF7/26/2013 8:25:00 PM
Description: Seattle right fielder Michael Morse will continue his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma. SOURCE: Greg Johns, MLB.com
Insight: There was speculation that Morse could be activated over the weekend but now it looks like the Mariners will wait until Tuesday before bringing him back. A quad injury has sidelined Morse for a little over a month.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SPHot7/26/2013 9:40:00 AM
Description: Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma is 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA and a 23/4 K/BB in 20 innings over his last three starts.
Insight: The right-hander went 0-3 with a 6.83 ERA and a 3.10 HR/9 in his previous five starts, but after winning his last three is 10-4 with a 2.87 ERA.
Nick Franklin, 2B7/26/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Seattle second baseman Nick Franklin belted a three-run homer Thursday against the Twins.
Insight: The rookie has been solid in his first 49 major league games, hitting .265 with eight homers, 27 RBI, five steals and a .792 OPS.
Michael Morse, RF7/23/2013 1:38:00 PM
Description: Mariners right fielder Michael Morse (quad) started a rehab assignment on Monday and hammered a home run for Triple-A Tacoma.
Insight: Morse hasn't played since June 20 due to a strained right quad. After a massive spring and a strong start to the season, it looked like Morse was going to have a big year, but he has hit just .242 with five home runs and a .695 OPS since April 18.
Brad Miller, SS7/21/2013 7:04:00 PM
Description: Seattle rookie shortstop Brad Miller drove in two more runs Sunday at Houston.
Insight: Miller went 2-for-5 Sunday, two days after going 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI. He has 14 RBI and a 17/10 K/BB in just 74 at-bats this season. The 23-year-old, who MLB.com ranks as the 98th best prospect in baseball, hit .356 with six homers and a 1.022 OPS in 104 at-bats with Triple-A Tacoma this season and should be added in all leagues.
Nick Franklin, 2B7/21/2013 6:35:00 PM
Description: Seattle second baseman Nick Franklin snapped out of a 4-for-26 (.154) slump Sunday with two hits, a homer and four RBI in six at-bats.
Insight: The rookie is hitting .268 with seven homers and 24 RBI this season. He had a 13/11 K/BB after his first 23 games, but he has struck out 29 times with just five walks over his last 22.
Erasmo Ramirez, SP7/19/2013 7:59:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitcher Erasmo Ramirez will start Tuesday against the Indians. He allowed six hits, walked four and gave up seven earned runs over 4 2/3 innings against Boston in his 2013 debut.
Insight: The 23-year-old righty had a 3.36 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP and a 48/12 K/BB in 59 innings last season with Seattle and a 3.09 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP and a 42/14 K/BB in 43 2/3 innings with Triple-A Tacoma this year. Fantasy owners shouldn't be discouraged by Ramirez' terrible first outing against one of the best hitting clubs in baseball.
Michael Morse, RF7/19/2013 7:55:00 PM
Description: Mariners manager Eric Wedge hopes right fielder Michael Morse (quad) can start a rehab assignment next week, according to Shannon Drayer of 710 AM ESPN Seattle.
Insight: Morse hasn't played since June 20 due to a strained right quad. After a massive spring and a strong start to the season, it looked like Morse was going to have a big year, but he has hit just .242 with five home runs and a .695 OPS since April 18.
Kendrys Morales, DH7/15/2013 7:12:00 PM
Description: ESPN's Doug Mittler suggests that Seattle could look to move DH Kendrys Morales before the trade deadline.
Insight: Jon Heyman of CBS implied that Raul Ibanez could also be up for grabs though that seems unlikely given his recent hot streak. Morales is still only 30 and he's having a great year (.280, 14 HR, 54 RBI in 90 games). With Seattle 13 games behind Oakland in the AL West, the Mariners are much more likely to be sellers than buyers at this year's deadline.
Joe Saunders, SPHot7/15/2013 12:52:00 PM
Description: Mariners left-hander Joe Saunders has won his last three games while yielding just two earned runs over 20 2/3 IP.
Insight: Saunders doesn't draw the attention that Felix Hernandez or Hisashi Iwakuma get, but he has yielded one earned run or less in seven of his last nine starts.
Justin Smoak, 1BHot7/14/2013 10:20:00 AM
Description: In 21 games since coming off the disabled list, Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak has hit .320 with five doubles, five homers, 14 RBI, a 16/9 K/BB and a .987 OPS.
Insight: Smoak hit .223 with a .683 OPS in his first three major league seasons and was hitting .240 with a .694 OPS when he suffered a strained right oblique in late May, but he has been a different hitter since returning.
Felix Hernandez, SPHot7/14/2013 10:15:00 AM
Description: Mariners ace Felix Hernandez held the Angels scoreless on seven hits over eight innings Saturday night to pick up his 10th win.
Insight: Hernandez won just six games prior to the All-Star break last year. He has gone 10-4 with a 2.53 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP and a 140/26 K/BB in 138 2/3 innings in 2013.
Raul Ibanez, LFHot7/13/2013 10:15:00 AM
Description: Seattle outfielder/designated hitter Raul Ibanez is a career .467 (14-for-30) with four homers and seven RBI against Angels starter Jered Weaver.
Insight: Ibanez is on a roll. The 41-year-old hit two more home runs on Friday night to bring his total to 24 for the season with 54 RBIs. He's been one of the biggest fantasy surprises over the first three months. Start him.
Nick Franklin, 2B7/12/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Seattle second baseman Nick Franklin left Wednesday night's game in the seventh inning after aggravating a right knee injury and was held out of Thursday's contest.
Insight: With the All-Star break only a few days away, the Mariners might play it safe and give Franklin the rest of the week off to heal up. He's hitting .275 with six homers, 19 RBI and five steals in 40 games this season. He's played at a fantasy-worthy level in his first big league experience.
Kyle Seager, 3BHot7/11/2013 10:18:00 PM
Description: Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager launched his 14th home run of the season Thursday against the Red Sox.
Insight: Seager has followed up a 1-for-23 slump with an 11-game hitting streak in which he has batted .442 with four round-trippers, nine RBI and a 2/5 K/BB.
Erasmo Ramirez, SP7/11/2013 10:14:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitcher Erasmo Ramirez did not have a good 2013 debut against the Red Sox on Thursday. He allowed six hits, walked four and gave up seven earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Fantasy owners shouldn't be discouraged by Ramirez' terrible outing Thursday against one of the best hitting clubs in baseball.
Jason Bay, LF7/11/2013 12:03:00 PM
Description: Mariners left fielder Jason Bay hasn't done well in his career against Ryan Dempster.
Insight: Bay has only collected two hits in 16 lifetime at bats versus the Red Sox righthander. Bay's home run total has improved since last season (11 in 63 games this year versus eight in 70 games in 2012) but all of his homers have been solo shots and he's still batting just .215 for the year. Even in 10 and 12-team leagues he's not much of an option.
Nick Franklin, 2B7/11/2013 11:00:00 AM
Description: Seattle second baseman Nick Franklin left Wednesday night's game in the seventh inning after aggravating a knee injury. SOURCE: Greg Johns, MLB.com
Insight: He probably won't be on the field for Thursday's series finale against Boston. With the All-Star break only a few days away, the Mariners might play it safe and give Franklin the rest of the week off to heal up. He's hitting .275 with six homers and 19 RBI in 40 games this season.
Danny Hultzen, RP7/10/2013 8:02:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen (shoulder) will be shut down for roughly 10 more days, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: Hultzen, the No. 2 overall pick in 2011, was out from April 19 to June 27 due to a left rotator cuff strain. He allowed two hits and no runs over six innings in his first start back to lower his ERA with Triple-A Tacoma to 2.20, but he hasn't pitched since due to more inflammation.
Nick Franklin, 2B7/7/2013 6:37:00 PM
Description: Mariners second baseman Nick Franklin, who missed Saturday's game after fouling a ball off his knee, returned to the lineup Sunday and went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Sunday against the Reds.
Insight: The rookie infielder has performed well this season, hitting .287 with six homers in 37 games.
Raul Ibanez, LFHot7/7/2013 11:56:00 AM
Description: Seattle outfielder/designated hitter Raul Ibanez has been a machine against Cincinnati righthander Bronson Arroyo (.417 AVG in 12 lifetime at bats).
Insight: Ibanez has been killing it lately with six homers in his last ten games. Sunday he'll hit cleanup and get the start in left field against the Reds.
Raul Ibanez, LF7/6/2013 10:05:00 AM
Description: Hot-hitting Mariners OF/DH Raul Ibanez is hitless is 11 at-bats versus Reds starter Mat Latos with four strikeouts.
Insight: Ibanez is currently on an 11-game hitting streak, but will be severly tested in this unfavorable matchup. For the season he's been a huge surprise, batting .257 with 21 HR and 49 RBI.
Brad Miller, SS7/5/2013 5:13:00 PM
Description: Seattle rookie shortstop Brad Miller will make his first start at the top of the order.
Insight: Miller has batted primarily at the bottom of the lineup in his first week in the big leagues but now will get a chance to prove himself in the leadoff position. He's batting .200 in his first 20 at-bats since being called up on June 28.
Michael Morse, RF7/4/2013 6:45:00 PM
Description: Mariners right fielder Michael Morse, who is on the disabled list with a right quad strain, will run the bases Friday, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: If he gets through it without an issue, he'll start a minor league rehab assignment. Morse last played June 20 and is hitting .251 with 11 homers, 23 RBI and a .767 OPS this season.
Justin Smoak, 1B7/4/2013 9:43:00 AM
Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak is batting .310 with three homers and a .956 OPS in 42 at-bats since returning from the disabled list.
Insight: The key prospect in the Cliff Lee trade with the Texas Rangers back in 2010, Smoak has hit just .228 with a .698 OPS across 1,650 big league plate appearances, so we'll need to see more before he becomes a fantasy option.
Kyle Seager, 3B7/4/2013 9:41:00 AM
Description: Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager has gone 6-for-13 with two homers, four RBI and four runs over his last three games.
Insight: That comes on the heels of a 1-for-23 (.043) slump, with the lone hit being a home run. Seager is batting .276 with 12 homers, 38 RBI and a .798 OPS this year.
Tom Wilhelmsen, RP7/3/2013 9:06:00 PM
Description: Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Tom Wilhelmsen could pitch in a save situation as soon as Wednesday night, according to Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune.
Insight: Wilhelmsen has given up one hit, zero walks and zero runs over his last four appearances. The team really has no other options to close, so he should be installed as the closer once again unless he has a complete meltdown.
Danny Hultzen, RP7/3/2013 7:51:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen is dealing with more rotator cuff irritation and will be shut down for around two weeks, according to Shannon Drayer of 710 AM ESPN Seattle and MyNorthwest.com.
Insight: Hultzen, the No. 2 overall pick in 2011, was out from April 19 to June 27 due to a left rotator cuff strain. He allowed two hits and no runs over six innings in his first start back to lower his ERA with Triple-A Tacoma to 2.20, but he is dealing with inflammation.
Michael Morse, RF7/3/2013 7:25:00 PM
Description: Mariners right fielder Michael Morse, who is on the disabled list with a right quad strain, likely will need at least several days of rehab with Triple-A Tacoma before he returns, manager Eric Wedge said, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: Morse last played June 20. He's hitting .251 with 11 homers, 23 RBI and a .767 OPS this season.
Tom Wilhelmsen, RP7/2/2013 8:17:00 PM
Description: It appears that Mariners reliever Tom Wilhelmsen is close to becoming the closer again. SOURCE: Greg Johns, MLB.com
Insight: The Bartender lost his closer's job a few weeks ago but he's looked pretty sharp over his last few outings (0.00 ERA, no hits allowed in his last three appearances). Wilhelmsen has converted 16 of his 21 save chances this season.
Nick Franklin, 2B7/1/2013 12:58:00 PM

Description: Mariners 2B/OF Dustin Ackley (thumb) is hoping to return to the lineup Tuesday, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: Ackley suffered a sprained thumb Saturday night, but he said he was feeling better Sunday and that the injury was not as bad as he initially thought.
Dustin Ackley, 2B6/29/2013 11:27:00 PM
Description: Mariners 2B/OF Dustin Ackley suffered a sprained left thumb Saturday against the Cubs.
Insight: Ackley's X-rays come back negative, according to MLB.com's Greg Johns. The Mariners hope he'll only miss a few games, so they won't make a roster move yet. Ackley went 1-for-3 with one RBI Saturday and is 1-for-7 since being recalled from the minors.
Michael Saunders, CFCold6/29/2013 6:19:00 PM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders will miss the next few days after getting spiked on his middle finger Saturday.
Insight: Saunders is limited to pinch-running until his laceration heals up. The outfielder is hitting just .165 with zero homers and 40 strikeouts over his last 115 at-bats dating back to May 16, so he shouldn't be owned in any leagues.
Nick Franklin, 2B6/29/2013 6:17:00 PM
Description: Mariners second baseman Nick Franklin is not in the lineup Saturday due to neck stiffness, according to Greg Johns of mlb.com.
Insight: Franklin is still available off the bench, so the injury doesn't appear to be serious. He could be back in the lineup as soon as Sunday, though with Seattle off Monday the Mariners might choose to keep him out Sunday to get him three consecutive days off.
Felix Hernandez, SP6/26/2013 9:35:00 PM
Description: M's starter Felix Hernandez fanned 11 Pirates Wednesday in a no-decision.
Insight: It's his second double-digit strikeout game of the season. In two starts versus Pittsburgh this year, King Felix is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday against Texas.
Raul Ibanez, LFHot6/26/2013 7:06:00 PM
Description: Mariners OF/DH Raul Ibanez has hit four homers over his last four games.
Insight: Ibanez went deep Wednesday against Pittsburgh, giving him nine home runs this month and 18 on the year, tied for 10th in baseball. The left fielder hasn't hit more than 20 homers in a season since 2009, but he's well on his way there this year.
Dustin Ackley, 2B6/25/2013 7:41:00 PM
Description: The Mariners have recalled Dustin Ackley from Triple-A.
Insight: Ackley was sent down after batting .205 with a .516 OPS in 45 games, but he hit .365 with two homers, 14 RBI and a 14/19 K/BB in 25 games with Tacoma. Ackley is expected to play corner outfield with second base currently being occupied by Nick Franklin, but we need to see him have success at the major league level again before we recommend him in fantasy leagues.
Franklin Gutierrez, CF6/25/2013 7:37:00 PM
Description: Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) has been placed on the disabled list again.
Insight: Gutierrez just returned from the disabled list on June 22 after missing two months due to a severe hamstring strain. He's back on the sidelines with the same issue.
Franklin Gutierrez, CF6/25/2013 10:22:00 AM
Description: Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) is questionable for Tuesday's game against Pittsburgh.
Insight: Gutierrez has been good when he's in the lineup (.267, 5 HR, 11 RBI, .874 OPS in 18 games), it's just he can't keep himself on the field. Of course, that's always been his problem.
Kendrys Morales, DHCold6/23/2013 10:19:00 PM
Description: Mariners DH Kendrys Morales hit a pinch-hit three-run walk-off homer off Oakland closer Grant Balfour in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday.
Insight: Morales needed that one badly. The DH had not homered since May 31 and is hitting just .130 (7-for-54) with zero extra-base hits and three RBI over his last 14 starts.
Raul Ibanez, LFHot6/23/2013 10:13:00 PM
Description: Mariners OF/DH Raul Ibanez has crushed 15 homers since May 10.
Insight: That's a span of 37 games. Ibanez went yard twice Sunday against the Athletics and has three homers and six RBI over his last two games.
Michael Morse, RF6/22/2013 7:26:00 PM
Description: M's right fielder Michael Morse has been moved to the 15-day DL.
Insight: He's been sidelined since Wednesday with a strained right quad. Endy Chavez (.287, 2 HR, 10 RBI) is likely to see most of the playing time in right field while Morse heals.
Taijuan Walker, RP6/21/2013 6:36:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitcher Taijuan Walker, who ranks fifth on MLB.com's list of the top 100 prospects in baseball, has been promoted to Triple-A.
Insight: Walker, a 20-year-old right-hander, posted a 2.46 ERA and a 96/30 K/BB in 84 innings with Double-A Jackson this season. He's someone to keep an eye on.
Kendrys Morales, DHCold6/21/2013 1:53:00 PM
Description: Mariners DH Kendrys Morales is a career .071 hitter against Oakland veteran hurler Bartolo Colon.
Insight: Morales was just 3-for-17 in the Mariners' four-game series with Anaheim, although he's always hit Oakland well and owns 15 homers and 43 RBI in 61 career games against the A's. You should probably avoid this matchup.
Michael Saunders, CFCold6/21/2013 1:46:00 PM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders has gone 1-for-11 with five strikeouts against Oakland right-hander Bartolo Colon.
Insight: Saunders' Thursday night two-hit game had his first multi-hit game since June 2 and his first extra base hit since June 1. This is not a guy who is about to turn his season around. He's hitting just .206 with a .618 OPS and should be avoided.
Jason Bay, LF6/20/2013 8:56:00 PM
Description: Seattle outfielder Jason Bay said Thursday that his tight hamstring feels "10 times better," according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: Bay hopes he is only a day or two away from returning to the lineup. The outfielder is hitting .222 with eight homers this season and isn't a good fantasy option.
Michael Morse, RF6/20/2013 6:39:00 PM
Description: Mariners right fielder Mike Morse is not in the lineup Thursday due to a nagging right quad injury, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: Morse will miss a primo matchup against Tommy Hanson of the Angels, who he has gone 5-for-13 (.385) with two homers and seven RBI against.
Michael Morse, RF6/20/2013 10:52:00 AM
Description: Mariners right fielder Mike Morse is a career .385 hitter with a pair of homers and seven RBI in 13 at-bats versus Angels starter Tommy Hanson.
Insight: Morse is hitless in the first two games of the series with the Angels and hasn't hit one out of the park in 11 games, but this is a favorable matchup.
Michael Morse, RF6/19/2013 7:38:00 PM
Description: Mariners right fielder Mike Morse has returned to the starting lineup.
Insight: He was given the night off Tuesday to rest his ailing quad. Morse is hitting .255 this season with 11 HR in 55 games.
Kyle Seager, 3BCold6/19/2013 11:16:00 AM
Description: Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager is 6-for-33 (.182) over his last eight games and has a terrible matchup ahead of him Wednesday.
Insight: Seager is 2-for-16 (.125) with seven strikeouts against C.J. Wilson of the Angels. Seager should be on fantasy benches Wednesday and whenever he faced a left-hander. The infielder is hitting .210 in 105 at-bats versus lefties, compared to .321 in 168 versus right-handers.
Michael Saunders, CFCold6/19/2013 11:13:00 AM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders has gone 14-for-96 (.146) with zero homers and 36 strikeouts over his last 30 games.
Insight: He also has a .158 average (3-for-19) against Angels starter C.J. Wilson, who will be on the hill Wednesday. Saunders can be dropped in all leagues, but fantasy owners who do own him should stick him on the bench Wednesday and for the foreseeable future.
Raul Ibanez, LF6/19/2013 11:11:00 AM
Description: Mariners OF/DH Raul Ibanez has a .143 average and a .551 OPS in his career against Angels starter C.J. Wilson.
Insight: Ibanez homered Tuesday and has hit five this month, but he shouldn't be in any fantasy lineups Wednesday.
Jeremy Bonderman, SPHot6/19/2013 9:32:00 AM
Description: Mariners pitcher Jeremy Bonderman threw his third straight quality start Tuesday against the Angels.
Insight: Bonderman didn't strike out anyone and has eight strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings so far, so his value is limited, but he has allowed just two runs on 12 hits over 20 innings in his last three starts.
Michael Morse, RF6/18/2013 7:12:00 PM
Description: Seattle right fielder Mike Morse won't be in the lineup Tuesday against the Angels.
Insight: Morse (.255, 11 HR, 23 RBI) has been dealing with quad soreness on and off for the past couple of weeks. Endy Chavez (.299, 2 HR, 10 RBI) will get the start in right.
Justin Smoak, 1B6/18/2013 6:20:00 PM
Description: M's first baseman Justin Smoak has been reinstated after a two and a half week stint on the disabled list.
Insight: He was nursing a strained oblique. Smoak has barely made a dent in fantasy this year, contributing just three homers in 46 games.
Nick Franklin, 2B6/18/2013 9:48:00 AM
Description: Mariners second baseman Nick Franklin hit a two-run homer Monday against the Angels.
Insight: Franklin is hitting .299 with three bombs, six RBI, two steals and a .904 OPS in his first 20 games in the majors. The former first-rounder should be added in most leagues.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP6/16/2013 10:11:00 PM
Description: Seattle righthander Hisashi Iwakuma watched his streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run come to an end on Sunday.
Insight: Iwakuma (7-2, 2.06 ERA) let four runs come across, the most he's allowed in a start since May 20th at Cleveland. The streak lasted 31 2/3 innings. He was 2 1/3 innings away from tying Mark Langston's team record of 34 consecutive frames without an earned run.
Felix Hernandez, SP6/16/2013 9:07:00 AM
Description: Seattle starter Felix Hernandez won his third straight decision Saturday against the Athletics.
Insight: Hernandez struck out eight and allowed five hits and no runs over seven innings. The right-hander is 8-4 with a 2.32 ERA and a 110/20 K/BB in 104 2/3 innings.
Tom Wilhelmsen, RPCold6/14/2013 10:35:00 PM
Description: Mariners righthander Tom Wilhelmsen has temporarily been relieved of his closer duties. SOURCE: Seattle Times
Insight: Wilhelmsen (0-2, 3.77 ERA, 16 saves) started the year on fire but he's cooled off considerably over his last few outings. Expect Carter Capps (2-1, 3.54) to get most of the save chances while Wilhelmsen works on earning his manager's trust back.
Kendrys Morales, DH6/14/2013 9:59:00 AM
Description: Mariners DH Kendrys Morales (back) was out of the lineup Wednesday, his second consecutive missed start, and is questionable for Friday's game against Oakland.
Insight: The team doesn't think it's serious and after a day off on Thursday should be ready to get back in the lineup for the weekend. Morales is hitting .292 with eight homers and 35 RBI.
Tom Wilhelmsen, RPCold6/13/2013 10:04:00 AM
Description: Seattle closer Tom Wilhelmsen gave up five runs in 1/3 on an inning Wednesday to blow a save against the Astros.

Michael Morse, RF6/12/2013 5:54:00 PM

Insight: More lower back stiffness for Morales. He was removed from Saturday's game with the same injury.
Mike Zunino, C6/11/2013 2:54:00 PM
Description: Seattle catching prospect Mike Zunino has gotten the call, according to Larry Stone of the Seattle Times. He's the top player in their minor league system and rated No.17 by Baseball America in their February Top-100 Prospects list.
Insight: Zunino had 11 HR and 41 RBI in 40 games through the end of May, but June has been a struggle. Long-term he's got nice fantasy potential, but finding your swing at the big league level is difficult. It might have been better if they had brought him up in May while he was still hot.
Michael Morse, RF6/6/2013 6:58:00 PM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Morse (quad) will be back in the starting lineup Thursday against the Yankees.

Hisashi Iwakuma, RPHot6/5/2013 9:40:00 PM
Description: M's ace Hisashi Iwakuma tossed eight scoreless innings Wednesday against the White Sox.
Insight: He hasn't allowed a run in his last two starts (15 2/3 IP over that span). The Mariners didn't score until the 14th inning, leaving Iwakuma (6-1, 1.94 ERA) with a no-decision. Opponents are hitting just .192 against the righthander this season.
Jesus Sucre, C6/5/2013 9:34:00 AM
Description: Seattle catcher Jesus Sucre was hit on the left hand by a pitch and could be out for a while.
Insight: Sucre has little to no fantasy value with a .192 batting average and no power, but his injury could open the door for the Mariners to bring up top catching prospect Mike Zunino. Zunino has 11 HR and 42 RBI in 43 games at Triple-A Tacoma.
Michael Morse, RF6/4/2013 11:26:00 AM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Morse is questionable for Tuesday's game against the Chicago White Sox after dealing with a strained right quadriceps. He was expected to return yesterday, but didn't. He's still shooting for a return mid-week.
Insight: Morse suffered the injury last Tuesday night. The outfielder led the majors in homers this spring and hit six homers over his first nine games, but he has hit just five home runs since. He is batting .254 with a .789 OPS.
Michael Morse, RF6/3/2013 11:26:00 AM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Morse is probable for Monday's game against the Chicago White Sox after dealing with a strained right quadriceps.
Insight: Morse suffered the injury last Tuesday night. The outfielder led the majors in homers this spring and hit six homers over his first nine games, but he has hit just five home runs since. He is batting .254 with a .789 OPS.
Kelly Shoppach, CCold6/3/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Mariners catcher Kelly Shoppach is just 3-for-20 (.150) versus White Sox starter John Danks.
Insight: Shoppach is 2-for-24 over his last six games and with this matchup should be sitting on your bench - not in your lineup.
Justin Smoak, 1B6/2/2013 12:29:00 PM
Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique.
Insight: Smoak suffered the injury last week. The first baseman is a .225 hitter with 348 strikeouts in 1,412 career at-bats. There's no reason to hold him.
Jeremy Bonderman, SP6/2/2013 12:14:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitcher Jeremy Bonderman has been called up from Triple-A Tacoma and will start Sunday against the Twins.
Insight: Bonderman hasn't pitched in the majors since 2010, when he had a 5.53 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP in 171 innings. He had a 4.52 ERA in 63 2/3 innings with Tacoma this season and shouldn't draw much fantasy interest.
Aaron Harang, SP6/1/2013 8:32:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Aaron Harang allowed two runs on four hits in six innings Saturday against the Twins.
Insight: It's a nice follow-up to the shutout he threw his last time out. The right-hander has thrown six innings or more and allowed two runs or less in four of the last five starts, but he gave up seven earned on nine hits in 3 2/3 in the other one.
Kyle Seager, 3B6/1/2013 8:30:00 PM
Description: Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager hit his seventh homer of the season Saturday against the Twins.
Insight: Seager hit 20 homers and drove in 86 runs in 594 at-bats last season. With seven homers and 24 RBI in 210 at-bats, he's behind that pace for 2013.
Jason Bay, LF6/1/2013 8:25:00 PM
Description: Seattle outfielder Jason Bay went 2-for-5 with a pair of solo homers Saturday against the Twins.
Insight: Bay has eight homers in 41 games, as many as he hit in 70 last season, but he's batting .239 and is only a fantasy option in deep AL-only leagues.
Jesus Montero, DH6/1/2013 4:55:00 PM
Description: Mariners C/DH Jesus Montero will miss 4-6 weeks with a torn meniscus in his left knee, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: Montero was demoted to Triple-A last week and now he'll have to rehab from this injury. The team is in the process of converting him to a full-time first baseman, but that will have to be put on hold.
Michael Morse, RF6/1/2013 12:50:00 PM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Morse's strained quad was a three-to-five day injury and he's still sidelined at Day 4.
Insight: Morse suffered the injury Tuesday night. The outfielder led the majors in homers this spring and hit six homers over his first nine games, but he has hit just five home runs since. He is batting .254 with a .789 OPS.
Nick Franklin, 2B5/30/2013 6:51:00 PM
Description: Seattle second baseman Nick Franklin blasted two homers Thursday against the Padres.
Insight: Franklin was called up from Triple-A earlier in the week. Obviously if Franklin continues to hit like this, he'll be able to stick around a while longer.
Felix Hernandez, SP5/30/2013 6:48:00 PM
Description: Seattle starter Felix Hernandez got back in the win column Thursday against San Diego.
Insight: King Felix surrendered just one run in eight innings. Hernandez's ERA (2.38) is the fourth-lowest in the American League.
Michael Saunders, CFCold5/30/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders is in the midst of a massive slump that has dropped his average from .278 to .215.
Insight: Saunders looked to be a solid third fantasy outfielder earlier this season, as he had four homers and six steals to go with a solid batting average after putting up 19 homers and 21 steals last year. However, Saunders is 4-for-42 (.095) with 18 strikeouts and one RBI over his last 12 games.
Michael Morse, RF5/29/2013 9:00:00 PM
Description: Mariners manager Eric Wedge said that the team hopes Michael Morse's strained quad will only keep him out for 3-5 days, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: Morse suffered the injury Tuesday night. The outfielder led the majors in homers this spring and hit six homers over his first nine games, but he has hit just five home runs and is batting .242 with a .701 OPS since suffering a fractured pinky on April 11.
Danny Hultzen, RP5/29/2013 6:28:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen has not started since April 19 due to a left rotator cuff strain.
Insight: Hultzen was the No. 2 overall pick in 2011. Last season, he had a 1.19 ERA at Double-A in 75 1/3 innings, but then posted a 5.92 mark in 48 2/3 innings at Triple-A. He started off wth a 25/6 K/BB and a 2.78 ERA in 22 2/3 innings with Triple-A Tacoma this season.
Michael Morse, RF5/29/2013 3:07:00 PM
Description: Mariners right fielder Michael Morse is expected to miss Wednesday's game against San Diego with a strained right quadriceps.
Insight: Morse tried to score in the fourth inning on Tuesday night and pulled up lame rounding third base. After an eight home run April, Morse has managed just three this month.
Dustin Ackley, 2B5/28/2013 5:00:00 PM
Description: Seattle second baseman Dustin Ackley was demoted to the minors Monday, opening the door for top hitting prospect Nick Franklin to be promoted to the big league roster.
Insight: Ackley has not developed after an intriguing 90-game cameo in 2011. He hit .226 last year and owns a .205 average and just one homer this season. The Mariners also have not had any production from shortstop, so Franklin should be in the lineup every day and should be owned in most formats.
Aaron Harang, SP5/27/2013 8:57:00 PM
Description: Seattle righthander Aaron Harang recorded his seventh career shutout Monday against the Padres.
Insight: It's a step in the right direction but we're still not ready to trust someone with a 6.51 ERA and a .281 batting average against. Harang's next start is scheduled for Saturday against Minnesota.
Nick Franklin, 2B5/27/2013 2:35:00 PM
Description: The Mariners have purchased the contract of shortstop prospect Nick Franklin.
Insight: The Mariners need production from the shortstop position with Brendan Ryan batting just .211 with a .542 OPS. Seattle figures to give Franklin a chance to play after batting .324 with a .912 OPS at Triple-A.
Nick Franklin, 2B5/27/2013 11:00:00 AM
Description: Mariners shortstop prospect Nick Franklin is going to get the call up, according to Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune.
Insight: The Mariners need production from the shortstop position with Brendan Ryan batting just .211 with a .542 OPS. Seattle figures to give Franklin a chance to play after batting .324 with a .912 OPS at Triple-A.
Kyle Seager, 3B5/27/2013 9:40:00 AM
Description: Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager is hitless in six at-bats against Padres left-hander Clayton Richard.
Insight: Seager is putting together his best year to date, batting .274 with six homers, 23 RBI and a .806 OPS. However, you should avoid this matchup.
Kendrys Morales, DHHot5/26/2013 8:35:00 PM
Description: Mariners DH Kendrys Morales had three hits on Sunday, including a home run, his sixth of the season, to continue hit hot hitting.
Insight: Morales is 13-for-27 (.481) over his last six games with seven extra base hits. We've always known he could hit, it's just been a matter of getting and staying healthy. Now if the Mariners can just get Michael Morse going again they could have the nucleus to a good hitting lineup.
Justin Smoak, 1B5/26/2013 11:18:00 AM
Description: Seattle first baseman Justin Smoak suffered a strained oblique Saturday against Texas. SOURCE: Ryan Divish, Tacoma News Tribune
Insight: Most oblique injuries require a stint on the DL. Fantasy owners won't miss him as Smoak is having a terrible season (.242, 3 HR, 8 RBI). DH Kendrys Morales would move to first if Smoak lands on the DL.
Michael Saunders, CF5/25/2013 11:12:00 AM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders is 0-for-9 versus Texas starter Derek Holland.
Insight: Saunders has played solidly when on the field (as per his past history he's already spent time on the DL). He has four homers, 13 RBI and 19 runs scored in 30 games. This matchup, however, is not favorable.
Jesus Montero, DHCold5/23/2013 12:21:00 PM
Description: Mariners designated hitter/catcher Jesus Montero has been demoted to Triple-A Tacoma.
Insight: That's called rock bottom, folks. Montero's season-long slump has finally earned him a one-way ticket to the minor leagues. You probably should have dumped Montero a long time ago but if he's still on your roster, promptly click the drop button.
Tom Wilhelmsen, RP5/20/2013 9:18:00 PM
Description: Seattle closer Tom Wilhelmsen finally blew his first save of the season Monday against Cleveland.
Insight: It looked like Wilhelmsen was about to get his 12th save, but instead he bobbled Justin Smoak's flip to first with two outs in the ninth. The error allowed Jason Kipnis to score from first base. Fantasy owners shouldn't be concerned as Wilhelmsen has only allowed one earned run in 19 innings this season.
Justin Smoak, 1B5/20/2013 9:58:00 AM
Description: Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak is hitless in five at-bats versus Cleveland starter Scot Kazmir.
Insight: Smoak is hitting .254 for the season, but without much power (2 homers, 9 extra base hits) which simply isn't enough from a power position like first base. As the cornerstone to the Cliff Lee trade back in 2010, Smoak has never lived up to expectations and it's long past time to give up on him as a fantasy option.
Kendrys Morales, DH5/19/2013 9:17:00 AM
Description: Mariners DH Kendrys Morales is batting .294 with two homers and an .847 OPS in May, but he has a tough matchup ahead of him Sunday.
Insight: Morales is facing Indians right-hander Justin Masterson, against whom he is 1-for-11 (.091).
Raul Ibanez, LFHot5/19/2013 9:14:00 AM
Description: Mariners OF/DH Raul Ibanez is 1-for-11 with two strikeouts against Indians right-hander Justin Masterson.
Insight: Ibanez is red hot, hitting six homers and driving in 14 runs over his last seven games, but he has struggled to hit Masterson, who will be on the mound Sunday.
Joe Saunders, SP5/18/2013 8:48:00 PM
Description: Mariners left-hander Joe Saunders gave up 11 hits and four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings Saturday against Cleveland, but he escaped with a no decision.
Insight: Saunders is 3-4 with a 5.64 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP. However, he is 3-0 with a 0.94 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP in four starts at Safeco Field, compared to 0-4 with an 11.25 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP on the road.
Raul Ibanez, LFHot5/18/2013 8:44:00 PM
Description: Mariners OF/DH Raul Ibanez has homered six times in the last seven games.
Insight: Ibanez has driven in 14 runs during that span. The 40-year-old was batting .158 with a .511 OPS, two homers and five RBI at the end of April, but he has raised his average to .236 and his OPS to .839.
Michael Morse, RFHot5/18/2013 11:22:00 AM
Description: Mariners right fielder Michael Morse is in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against Cleveland. He missed Friday's game because of an irritated eye.
Insight: Morse has gone 9-for-15 over his last four games to raise his average from .220 to .261.
Michael Morse, RFHot5/17/2013 6:46:00 PM
Description: Mariners right fielder Michael Morse has been scratched from Friday night's starting lineup.
Insight: He's dealing with eye irritation. Morse has gone 9-for-17 over his last four games to raise his average from .220 to .261. Endy Chavez (.284, 0 HR, 4 RBI) will draw the start in right field.
Casper Wells, LF5/17/2013 10:13:00 AM
Description: White Sox outfielder Casper Wells could get a rare start against Angels lefty C.J. Wilson. He's a career .417 hitter (5-for-12) with three doubles and a pair of home runs.
Insight: This would be a good opportunity for the White Sox to sit DH Adam Dunn who is batting .087 versus left-handers. If manager Robin Ventura makes the change, consider starting Wells.
Aaron Harang, SP5/16/2013 3:00:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Aaron Harang has been scratched from Thursday's start against the Yankees due to back stiffness, according to Shannon Drayer of 710 AM ESPN Seattle.
Insight: Harang had an 11.37 ERA in three April starts but has gone 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP in two starts this month. Hector Noesi will make a spot start Thursday against his former ballclub.
Nick Franklin, 2B5/16/2013 2:41:00 PM
Description: Mariners shortstop prospect Nick Franklin is hitting .339 with four homers and a 16/24 K/BB in 30 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season. He ranks as MLB.com's No. 44 overall prospect.
Insight: Seattle Mariners' shortstops have combined to hit .121 with 34 strikeouts and a .318 OPS this season, so Franklin should be on the way up soon.
Kyle Seager, 3B5/15/2013 10:25:00 PM
Description: Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager went 2-for-4 with a homer, a walk and three RBI Wednesday at New York.
Insight: Seager has five homers, 21 RBI and a .286 batting average. His K rate is up from last year, but so is his BB rate. Also, he's hitting fewer flyballs, which is helping him hit for a higher BABIP (.286 last year, .330 this year).
Raul Ibanez, LFHot5/15/2013 10:22:00 PM
Description: Mariners OF/DH Raul Ibanez went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and a two-run homer Wednesday against the Yankees, his former team.
Insight: Ibanez hit 19 homers in 384 at-bats with the Yankees last season, and he has returned to Yankee Stadium with three homers over the last two games. Overall, he has four homers and 11 RBI over his last four games.
Felix Hernandez, SPHot5/15/2013 8:38:00 PM
Description: Mariners ace Felix Hernandez left his start Tuesday against the Yankees early due to a back injury but manager Eric Wedge said Wednesday that the right-hander is "feeling good."
Insight: Hernandez is 5-2 with a 1.53 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP and a 64/10 K/BB in 64 2/3 innings, so any injury would be catastrophic for fantasy owners, but he appears to be OK.
Franklin Gutierrez, CF5/15/2013 5:59:00 PM
Description: Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) could go out on a rehab assignment Thursday or Friday, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.
Insight: Gutierrez suffered a strained hamstring on April 22. He was hitting .259 with four homers prior to his injury.
Dustin Ackley, 2B5/15/2013 12:07:00 PM
Description: Seattle second baseman Dustin Ackley is 5-for-10 against Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes with a 1.200 OPS.
Insight: Ackley has not developed after an intriguing 90-game cameo in 2011. He hit .226 last year and owns a .231 average in 2013. This is a favorable matchup, but overall we don't see much of a future for the second overall pick of the 2009 draft.
Michael Saunders, CF5/14/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders is just 1-for-11 (.091) versus Yankees left-hander C.C. Sabathia.
Insight: Saunders has played solidly when on the field (as per his past history he's already spent time on the DL). He's batting .286 with four homers, 11 RBI and 17 runs scored in 20 games. This matchup, however, is not favorable.
Jesus Montero, DH5/12/2013 10:05:00 AM
Description: Seattle catcher Jesus Montero is a .500 hitter (7-for-14) against Oakland left-hander Tommy Milone with a 1.286 OPS.
Insight: Montero was hyped as a big-time offensive prospect with the Yankees, but he has disappointed since being traded to the Mariners for Michael Pineda. He's hitting just .198 with three homers and eight RBI this season. Perhaps this favorable matchup will help get him above the Mendoza Line.
Felix Hernandez, SPHot5/8/2013 10:21:00 PM
Description: Mariners ace Felix Hernandez needed just 97 pitches to breeze through eight innings of one-run ball Wednesday against the Pirates.
Insight: Hernandez (5-2, 1.53 ERA, 0.90 WHIP) has taken his game to new heights this season, walking just eight batters in 58 2/3 innings and getting hitters to swing and miss at a career-high rate.
Jesus Montero, DH5/8/2013 6:47:00 PM
Description: Seattle catcher Jesus Montero hit a solo homer off Pirates starter A.J. Burnett Wednesday afternoon.
Insight: Montero was hyped as a big-time offensive prospect with the Yankees, but he has disappointed since being traded to the Mariners in a deal for Michael Pineda. He's hitting just .205 with three homers and eight RBI this season.
Jason Bay, LF5/8/2013 10:06:00 AM
Description: Seattle outfielder Jason Bay has a career .364 batting average (8-for-22) against Pittsburgh right-hander A.J. Burnett.
Insight: Bay is coming off a dismal season, but has actually looked pretty good over the past two weeks, batting .345 with a 1.049 OPS and a pair of home runs in nine games.
Kendrys Morales, DH5/7/2013 6:08:00 PM
Description: Mariners DH Kendrys Morales is not in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Pirates.
Insight: The Mariners are playing a two-game set at Pittsburgh, so they cannot use the designated hitter. Morales is hitting .261 with three homers and a .756 OPS this season.
Franklin Gutierrez, CF5/5/2013 12:05:00 PM
Description: Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) has yet to resume baseball activities, according to The News Tribune.
Insight: Gutierrez suffered a strained hamstring on April 22. He'll be reevaluated when the team arrives home Friday for a series against Oakland.
Kyle Seager, 3B5/5/2013 9:21:00 AM
Description: Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager is batting .292 with four homers and 15 RBI and has a .545 career average against Sunday's opposing starter Brandon Morrow of the Blue Jays.
Insight: Seager quietly drove in 86 homers and hit 20 homers with 35 doubles a year ago, and he has continued to produce this season. He is 6-for-11 with two doubles and a homer against Morrow.
Hisashi Iwakuma, RPHot5/4/2013 8:25:00 PM
Description: Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma was brilliant again Saturday against the Blue Jays, tossing seven innings of one-run ball. He walked three, struck out five and allowed five hits to improve to 3-1.
Insight: Iwakuma came into Saturday's start with the seventh-best swing-and-miss rate in the majors. While his 1.61 ERA will increase once his .191 BABIP rises, Iwakuma is still a tremendous fantasy option.
Dustin Ackley, 2B5/4/2013 8:06:00 PM
Description: Seattle second baseman Dustin Ackley launched a grand slam Saturday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Ackley has not developed after an intriguing 90-game cameo in 2011. He hit .226 last year and owns a .255 average in 2013. The grand slam was his first home run of the season.
Michael Saunders, CF5/4/2013 8:04:00 PM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders has two three-hit efforts in his last three games.
Insight: Saunders went 3-for-5 with two homers Saturday against the Blue Jays and is batting .300 with four home runs, 11 RBI, 14 runs and four steals despite spending two weeks on the DL with a shoulder injury.
Raul Ibanez, LF5/4/2013 10:30:00 AM
Description: Mariners OF/DH Raul Ibanez has had some success against Toronto knuckleballer R.A. Dickey and should find his way into the lineup on Saturday.
Insight: Ibanez has struggled early on but his short swing works well in this situation and he's 10-for-28 (.357) with three homers in his matchups with Dickey.
Felix Hernandez, SPHot5/3/2013 10:21:00 PM
Description: Mariners ace Felix Hernandez fired eight scoreless frames Friday in a win over the Blue Jays.
Insight: Hernandez (4-2, 1.60 ERA) has pitched at least six innings in every start this year. Opponents are hitting just .212 against him.
Blake Beavan, SPCold5/1/2013 7:37:00 PM
Description: The Blake Beavan experiment just isn't working out in Seattle. The Mariners sent their struggling young righthander down to Triple-A on Wednesday.
Insight: Beavan (0-1, 8.27 ERA) opened the season as Seattle's No. 5 starter. Now he'll need to prove himself in the minors before he gets another shot with the Mariners.
Michael Saunders, CF4/29/2013 8:04:00 PM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders (shoulder) has been activated from the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Saunders hasn't played since April 11 due to a sprained shoulder. He'll start in center field Monday night.
Michael Morse, LF4/28/2013 8:20:00 PM
Description: Seattle left fielder Mike Morse homered Sunday for the first time since suffering a non-displaced pinky fracture nearly three weeks ago.
Insight: Morse led the majors in spring homers and hit six in his first nine games this year, but he has been struggling mightily since returning to action on April 16.
Hisashi Iwakuma, RPHot4/28/2013 8:18:00 PM
Description: Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma held the Angels to three hits and one unearned run in six innings Sunday.
Insight: Iwakuma didn't walk a batter and has a 37/5 K/BB in 37 2/3 innings. His ERA is 1.67 and his WHIP is 0.69, but he has won only two of his six starts.
Tom Wilhelmsen, RP4/28/2013 8:16:00 PM
Description: Mariners closer Tom Wilhelmsen is a perfect 8-for-8 on save chances this season and has allowed one earned run and four hits in 12 innings.
Insight: Wilhelmsen solidified Seattle's bullpen last year after taking over the closer role and ended up posting a 2.50 ERA and striking out more than a batter per inning.
Kendrys Morales, DH4/28/2013 9:40:00 AM
Description: Mariners DH Kendrys Morales is 5-for-12 with a couple of home runs and a 1.378 OPS against Angels left-hander Jason Vargas.
Insight: Morales is getting most of the DH opportunities and is batting .261 with three homers and 10 RBI. He's had a hit in each of the first three games of this series.
Kyle Seager, 3B4/26/2013 11:59:00 AM
Description: Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager is just 1-for-13 against Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson with five strikeouts.
Insight: Seager has been crushing the ball over the past two weeks and owns a 14-game hitting streak which has jumped his totals for the season to .306 with a .908 OPS. Today will be a good test as to whether his hot streak can overcome his poor history against Wilson.
Franklin Gutierrez, CF4/25/2013 8:32:00 PM
Description: Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez will be sidelined for the next 2-to-3 weeks as he recovers from a Grade 1 hamstring strain. SOURCE: Shannon Drayer, MyNorthwest.com
Insight: Gutierrez has historically been a slow healer so three weeks to a month is probably a more realistic timetable. Endy Chavez (.263, 0 HR, 3 RBI) has been starting at center field in Gutierrez's place.
Michael Morse, LF4/25/2013 8:00:00 PM
Description: Seattle left fielder Mike Morse will have the night off Thursday against Los Angeles.
Insight: It's just a maintenance day for the big outfielder. Light-hitting Jason Bay (.184, 1 HR, 3 RBI) is taking his place in left field.
Danny Hultzen, RP4/25/2013 2:22:00 PM
Description: Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen has a 2.78 ERA and a 25/6 K/BB in 22 2/3 innings at Triple-A Tacoma this season.
Insight: Hultzen was the No. 2 overall pick in 2011 and is currently ranked as the 18th overall prospect in baseball by MLB.com. He had a 1.19 ERA at Double-A in 75 1/3 innings, but he posted a 5.92 mark in 48 2/3 innings at Triple-A last year, so this strong start is a good sign.
Michael Saunders, CF4/24/2013 5:03:00 PM
Description: Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders (shoulder) will likely go out on a rehab stint with Triple-A Tacoma this weekend before rejoining the team. SOURCE: Mariners.mlb.com
Insight: Saunders is dealing with a sprained right shoulder. He's eligible to return from the 15-day DL on April 26, but he'll need a few games. Saunders is hitting .286 with a homer and three steals this season after belting 19 homers and stealing 21 bags last year.
Brendan Ryan, SS4/24/2013 12:59:00 PM
Description: Seattle shortstop Brendan Ryan has lost his starting job to Robert Andino.
Insight: Ryan is one of the league's best fielding shortstops, but he's batting .143 this season and hit just .194 last year. Andino is no Troy Tulowitzki, but he is a career .233 hitter.
Franklin Gutierrez, CF4/23/2013 4:55:00 PM
Description: Seattle center fielder Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Gutierrez (.259, 4 HR, 10 RBI) has been in and out of the lineup lately with groin issues and suffered a hamstring strain Monday when he attempted to make a diving catch. The oft-injured outfielder has missed 197 games and counting since the start of the 2011 season.
Miguel Olivo, C4/23/2013 11:23:00 AM
Description: Marlins part-time catcher Miguel Olivo should get the start on Tuesday, weather permitting, as he's a career .600 hitter versus Minnesota right-hander Kevin Correia with a 1.736 OPS.
Insight: Olivo was a fantasy disappointment last season and has done little this season, although he does have three hits in his last five at-bats and a favorable matchup. If he's in the lineup he's worth a flier.
Franklin Gutierrez, CF4/22/2013 10:17:00 PM
Description: Seattle center fielder Franklin Gutierrez exited Monday's game against Houston because of hamstring tightness. SOURCE: Greg Johns, MLB.com
Insight: Gutierrez (.259, 4 HR, 10 RBI) just keeps finding new ways to get hurt. He's now missed 197 games since the start of the 2011 season. This latest injury should sideline Gutierrez for at least the next couple of days.
Miguel Olivo, C4/22/2013 10:12:00 AM
Description: Marlins part-time catcher Miguel Olivo should get the start on Monday as he's a career .600 hitter versus Minnesota right-hander Kevin Correia with a 1.736 OPS.
Insight: Olivo was a fantasy disappointment last season and has done little this season, although he does have three hits in his last five at-bats and a favorable matchup. If he's in the lineup he's worth a flier.
Kyle Seager, 3BHot4/21/2013 6:53:00 PM
Description: Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager crushed a home run Sunday as part of a three-hit afternoon.
Insight: By doing so, Seager (.268, 1 HR, 7 RBI) was able to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. That's the third-longest streak in the American League right now. Torii Hunter and Coco Crisp are both in the midst of 13-game hitting streaks.
Brandon Maurer, SP4/20/2013 10:48:00 PM
Description: Mariners starter Brandon Maurer has thrown two straight quality starts after giving up six runs and seven hits in 2/3 of an inning on April 9 against Houston. He limited Texas to two hits in 6 2/3 innings Saturday night, but both were homers.
Insight: Maurer put up a 0.90 ERA and 22/6 K/BB ratio in 20 innings this spring after coming in as a long shot to win a rotation job and went 9-2 with a 3.20 ERA and 117/48 K/BB in 137 2/3 innings at Double-A last season. He's worth holding onto in AL-only leagues despite the meltdown against the Astros.
Franklin Gutierrez, CF4/20/2013 6:22:00 PM
Description: Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez (groin) will return to the lineup Saturday against the Rangers.
Insight: Gutierrez has missed four of the last six games due to a groin issue.
Kendrys Morales, DHCold4/19/2013 10:08:00 AM
Description: Mariners DH Kendrys Morales is 1-for-15 with eight strikeouts against Texas right-hander Yu Darvish.
Insight: Morales is getting most of the DH opportunities and is batting .259 with a homer and seven RBI, but just one RBI in his last five games. This isn't the matchup that will get him going, so put him on the bench.
Hisashi Iwakuma, RPHot4/18/2013 9:13:00 PM
Description: Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma outdueled Justin Verlander Thursday afternoon and shut out the high-powered Tigers' offense on three hits over six innings.
Insight: Iwakuma has given up a measly 12 hits and five earned runs (four homers) in 26 2/3 innings this season. He owns a 2-0 record and a 18/1 K/BB. This comes after he went 8-4 with a 2.65 ERA over 95 innings in 16 starts last year.
Felix Hernandez, SP4/18/2013 10:47:00 AM
Description: M's righthander Felix Hernandez was spectacular Wednesday against Detroit (8 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 12 Ks, 0 BB).
Insight: Fantasy owners have to be frustrated with the lack of run support Hernandez (1-2, 2.20 ERA) is receiving this season. In four starts, Seattle has produced a combined nine runs for Hernandez. He hasn't won a decision since the season opener April 1st against Oakland.
