GAME NOTES: The Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners will try to win back-to-back games for the first time this season, as they pay a visit to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane for a Conference USA clash on Saturday afternoon.
UTSA had been losers of three straight heading into last weekend's home bout with UAB, but it was able to get back on track in a big way with a 52-31 triumph. The Roadrunners are just 3-5 overall this season, but they have held their own in C-USA with a 2-2 league mark.
Tulsa recently embarked on a two-game road swing, and while it registered its first conference victory on Oct. 12 with a 34-20 win over Texas-El Paso, it dropped a hard-fought battle at first-place Tulane last Saturday, 14-7. The Golden Hurricane have been a disappointment at 2-5 overall after posting an outstanding 10-3 campaign in 2012.
This bout marks the first-ever between these two programs.
The Roadrunners offense has been rather modest this season, racking up 26.5 ppg, but they are fresh off a school-record 523 yards in last week's win, and the 52 points was the most they've ever put up against an FBS opponent.
Eric Soza has been largely effective under center, as he has completed 62 percent of his passes for 1,877 yards and 10 touchdowns, including two against UAB, although he has been turnover prone with nine interceptions. The signal caller is also a factor on the ground with 256 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
UTSA employs several backs on its way to 164.0 ypg on the ground. David Glasco gets the majority of the work with 359 yards and five touchdowns on 73 totes.
Likewise, the team also spreads the wealth at receiver, with 12 different players registering double-digit catches. Kam Jones (250 yards, TD) has a team-high 23 receptions, while Kenny Bias has 319 yards and two scores on only 14 grabs.
Defensively, UTSA has not been up to snuff, ranking 10th in C-USA in both scoring defense (33.9 ppg) and total defense (407.9 ypg), while allowing opponents to convert third downs at a 49 percent clip.
The unit has only forced five turnovers, with Crosby Adams III accounting for two of those with an interception and a fumble recovery. Triston Wade leads the way with 64 tackles. Codie Brooks has logged 5.0 sacks.
Tulsa's offense has been grounded all season long, as it scores just 20.9 ppg on 369.1 ypg. It is coming off its worst performance of the campaign against Tulane, putting up just seven points while committing four turnovers.
Redshirt freshman Cody Green earned the first start of his career last week and struggled mightily, completing just 13-of-30 passes for 139 yards with zero touchdowns and three interceptions. Cody Green (.554 completion percentage, 1,266 yards, eight TDs, five INTs) missed the previous game due to injury but is expected to return for this contest.
The Golden Hurricane rely heavily on Trey Watts out of the backfield. The senior is tied for the lead league with 136 carries, which have resulted in 628 yards and five touchdowns. Watts is also the team's leading receiver with 32 catches for 282 yards.
Jordan James (24 receptions, 323 yards, TD), Keeven Lucas (19 receptions, 260 yards, TD) and Thomas Roberson (15 receptions, 221 yards, thee TDs) have all been solid at receiver.
Tulsa's inability to generate offense has negatively effected its defense, which allows 30.6 ppg and 392.9 ypg.
Shawn Jackson is the unit's top playmaker with 63 tackles, 8.5 TFL, three interceptions, a fumble recovery and a sack. Michael Mudoh is the top tackler with 80 stops, Darnell Walker and Will Barrow have two picks apiece and Derrick Alexander has four sacks.
Although Tulsa went just 1-2 in October, it has shown improvement over the past month, with its two losses to conference front runners Rice and Tulane coming by a combined 10 points. The Golden Hurricane's return home should yield positive results against an inconsistent UTSA squad.
