Minnesota got on the board first when Nelson hit Engel with a 10-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive of the game. The Hoosiers responded with two scoring drives of their own in the first quarter as kicker Mitch Ewald connected on 31-yard field goal, followed by an 18-yard TD pass from Roberson to Kofi Hughes.
After Ewald added another field goal early in the second quarter, the Gophers ran off 21-straight points to close out the half. First, Leidner ran it in from five yards out to put Minnesota back on top 14-13, then Nelson found Drew Goodger for a 10-yard scoring strike, followed by a 33-yard TD reception by Engel as Minnesota took a 28-13 advantage into halftime.
Minnesota extended the lead to 35-13 at the 6:24 mark of the third when Cobb reached the end zone on a 27-yard run, but after that the Hoosiers mounted a serious comeback bid.
Sudfeld began with a 40-yard TD pass to Shane Wynn barely a moment later, while Coleman raced 55 yards to the end zone just 10 seconds into the fourth quarter to make the score 35-27. Houston crossed the goal line on a four-yard run minutes later, but a failed two-point conversion left Indiana trailing.
Capping a four-play, 39-yard drive and needing only 53 seconds to do so, Cody Latimer reeled in a 30-yard TD strike from Sudfeld, but again a two-point conversion attempt was denied, leaving the hosts with a 39-35 edge with 5:33 left in regulation.
On their ensuing possession, the Golden Gophers used up 2:27 on the clock, moving the ball 75 yards as they capped a five-play drive with a 50-yard TD pass from Nelson to Williams.
Minnesota dominated the time of possession, controlling the action for more than 38 minutes, allowing the visitors to generate 573 yards of total offense in the process.
