Final Score: Phoenix 4, Ottawa 3 (OT)
Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Antoine Vermette finished off his second
career hat trick with 2:37 remaining in overtime, as Phoenix slipped past
Ottawa, 4-3, on Saturday.
Following a left-circle faceoff win, Derek Morris received the puck at the
point and put a shot on net which Craig Anderson stopped, but the rebound
popped out to Vermette and he slid the puck home to end the contest.
"You can argue he's our most valuable player," said Phoenix head coach Dave
Tippett. "A workhorse and guy we can rely on in all situations."
Radim Vrbata netted the other score and Mikkel Boedker added two assists for
the Coyotes, who snapped a three-game slide and finish their four-game
road trip in Buffalo on Monday.
Mike Smith stopped 37 shots, including one on Clarke MacArthur earlier in the
extra session which allowed Phoenix a shot to win the game.
Marc Methot posted a goal and an assist for the Senators, who got other
tallies from Kyle Turris and Zack Smith. Anderson took the loss despite 34
Turris put the hosts on the board with a power-play goal at 6:14 of the first,
and Smith doubled the advantage on a shot below the left circle with 3:10 gone
in the second.
Lauri Korpikoski fed Vermette and the ex-Senator finished off a 2-on-1 break
with a backhander at 5:28, then Vrbata converted a Martin Hanzal dish on the
advantage for a 2-2 game at 8:47.
Ottawa jumped on top by a 3-2 count during a 4-on-4 at 14:51, as Methot walked
out in front and tucked a shot home from the right side.
Phoenix gained a power play with 3:25 remaining in regulation when Erik Condra
was sent off for high sticking. Vermette struck again, tying the game at 3-3
with 2:13 to play by scoring from the left side off a David Moss feed.
"We're trying out there, we're trying to win and we're trying to do things
right," said Sens captain Jason Spezza. "It just seems like right now we can't
find a way to win and every mistake seems to end up in the back of our net."
Smith did the splits to deny a MacArthur chance at the left post with 1:47
played in OT and his effort was rewarded on the following shift.
Phoenix has won three of the last five meetings with Ottawa since December of
2009 ... Vermette's only other career hat trick occurred on April 3, 2008, an
8-2 win over Toronto for the Senators ... Ottawa hosts Pittsburgh on Monday.
