Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Frans Nielsen scored the winner in the
shootout as the New York Islanders took a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay
Nielsen was the first skater for New York and he buried his shot past Ben
Bishop. Kevin Poulin then stopped Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman for the
"I thought our start was pretty good tonight despite giving up the power-play
goal," said New York head coach Jack Capuano. "We got some big saves and the
penalty kill really played well today."
Thomas Vanek scored the goal in regulation while Poulin stopped 29 shots for
the Islanders, who have won five of their last six.
Martin St. Louis scored and Bishop also made 29 saves for the Lightning, who
have dropped four straight at home.
"We had our chances to put them away and we didn't", said Bishop. "I thought
we played a good game, just came up on the short end against a team that's
been pretty hot."
The only goal of the first period went to Tampa Bay while on the power play,
as Valtteri Filppula's shot from the slot saw the rebound kicked out to the
right side and St. Louis bury it at 5:45.
New York tied the game with a power-play goal of its own at 18:22 of the
second period. A right circle faceoff was won by John Tavares and Vanek passed
the puck over to Frans Nielsen, who sent it back to Vanek for a tap-in and his
17th goal of the year.
Poulin made 10 saves through the third period and overtime, while Bishop
stopped seven shots.
Tampa hosts San Jose on Saturday ... New York starts a home-and-home set with
the Flyers in Philly on Saturday ... Tampa took a 3-2 shootout win in New York
on Dec. 17 ... Tampa was 1-for-3 on the power play, while New York was 1-
