Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Carolina Hurricanes acquired defenseman John-Michael Liles from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Tim Gleason and the rights to defenseman Dennis Robertson.
Liles has played in just six games this season and has not recorded a point. He has also played with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, recording three goals and 10 assists.
"John-Michael is a puck-moving defenseman who has demonstrated in his career that he can make a difference offensively from the blue line," said Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford.
In his 11th NHL season, the 33-year-old Liles has notched 77 goals and 236 assists for 313 points in 627 NHL regular-season games with the Avalanche and the Maple Leafs.
Gleason has played in 25 games this season, recording just two assists.
He leaves Carolina ranked third in games played (491), fourth in assists (87) and sixth in points (100) among club defensemen since the team's relocation.
Robertson, 22, is in his senior season at Brown University and leads club defensemen with eight points (3g, 5a) in the Bears' 12 games this season. The Maple Leafs drafted Robertson in the sixth round, 173rd overall, in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
