Englewood, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Denver Broncos signed former first- round pick Michael Huff on Tuesday and placed starting safety Rahim Moore on injured reserve with a designation to return.
The move comes one day after Moore underwent surgery for a serious condition known as lateral compartment syndrome.
Moore exited Sunday night's 27-17 win over Kansas City in the first half and did not return after being diagnosed with what the team called a lower leg injury.
Still feeling pain in his leg during the night, Moore called head athletic trainer Steve Antonopulos. Antonopulos and the Broncos' medical staff diagnosed the ailment as lateral compartment syndrome, which is potentially life-threatening.
Moore underwent successful surgery on Monday morning and will miss six weeks of practice and eight weeks of games before he is eligible to return to the active roster. That timetable would leave him unavailable until the AFC Championship Game, if the Broncos make it that far.
To fill the void left by Moore, the Broncos brought in a veteran presence in Huff, who started the season with Baltimore and appeared in seven games with one start before he was released in October.
Since being selected seventh overall by Oakland in the 2006 NFL Draft, the 30- year-old Huff has 11 interceptions and 54 passes defensed in 115 games (94 starts) over eight seasons with the Raiders and Ravens.
