Eden Prairie, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - The Minnesota Vikings officially signed quarterback Josh Freeman to a one-year contract on Monday.
Freeman's agent, Erik Burkhardt, broke the news on Twitter Sunday night, saying simply, "Vikings!!!"
The deal became official once Freeman passed a physical on Monday.
"This felt right in my heart. Great gut feeling. I am definitely fired up," Freeman said during a Monday conference call.
The 2009 first-round draft pick's often-turbulent four-year tenure with Tampa Bay ended abruptly last Thursday, with the team releasing the Kansas State product after he completed just 45.7 percent of his throws with two touchdowns and three interceptions as the Buccaneers dropped their first three games of the season.
Freeman's release came one day after Sports Illustrated reported that he had been fined twice by the Buccaneers in the past month for conduct detrimental to the team. One was for an unauthorized interview with ESPN and the other for skipping at least one team meeting.
The 25-year-old signal-caller compiled a 24-35 record over his four-plus seasons as Tampa Bay's starter, throwing for 13,534 yards and 80 touchdowns with 66 interceptions since being drafted 17th overall back in 2009.
"He is very talented as a passer. He is a big quarterback with a strong arm that can do a lot of good things," Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said of Freeman.
Minnesota starting quarterback Christian Ponder missed the team's 34-27 Week 4 win over Pittsburgh with a rib injury, leaving the door open for Freeman to battle with backup Matt Cassel for a potential starting role in the future.
Vikings coach Leslie Frazier discussed the quarterback situation heading into this Sunday's game against Carolina.
"We're going to see how Christian (Ponder) does on Wednesday, but between he and Matt (Cassel), they'll be the guys that will start the game," Frazier said on Monday. "We're not going to try to get Josh up and going for this ball game. We'll see where he is and we'll have an update later on."
