Allen Park, MI (Sports Network) - Detroit Lions special teams standout Montell Owens will start the season on injured reserve because of a knee problem.
Owens, however, was given the designated to return tag and could come back later this season. He will be eligible to practice for Week 7 and could return to game action for Week 9.
The 29-year-old Maine product signed with the Lions in the offseason after playing his first seven years with Jacksonville. His 118 special teams tackles are a Jaguars record.
Owens earned Pro Bowl honors as a special teamer with the Jaguars after the 2010 and 2011 seasons. He has also run for 292 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 12 catches for 132 yards.
The Lions signed linebacker Rocky McIntosh to fill the roster spot. The 30- year-old veteran played last year with the Rams after spending his first six years in Washington.
McIntosh has 515 tackles, nine sacks and four interceptions in 108 NFL games.
