Final Score: Boston 113, Washington 111 (OT)
Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Green netted a season-high 39 points
and Gerald Wallace scored the game-winning layup with 2.9 seconds left in
overtime as the shorthanded Boston Celtics edged the Washington Wizards,
113-111, from Verizon Center.
Trevor Ariza's 3-pointer with 1:39 left in regulation gave Washington a three-
point edge, but Green's one-footed heave from 27-feet found the net to tie it
at the other end. Nene missed a pair of jumpers in the final 10.8 seconds and
five extra minutes were needed.
Boston never trailed in overtime, but it was tied at 111-111 after Marcin
Gortat split a pair of free throws with 13.9 ticks remaining. Out of a
timeout, Wallace, who was starting in place of the injured Avery Bradley
(ankle), drove to the basket and converted to help Boston snap its three-game
"I knew I was going to get to the rim and get a shot off," said Wallace. "I
didn't know what was going to happen after that."
Green shot 14-of-26 from the floor and added a career-best eight triples for
the Celtics, who were also without point guard Rajon Rondo (rest). Phil
Pressey hit 5-of-6 from the arc and recorded a career-high 20 points and Jared
Sullinger had 14 points with 11 rebounds.
John Wall tallied his second career triple-double with 28 points, 11 rebounds
and 10 assists in the setback. Nene scored 17 points and Bradley Beal and
Ariza finished with 14 apiece.
"We get to playing selfishly and it all starts with me," said Wall. "That's
the reason why we lost today."
The Wizards fell to 0-5 on the season when playing with a .500 record.
Boston dominated the first half, leading 32-22 after 12 minutes and 61-43 at
halftime. Washington shot just 37.2 percent from the field with half as many
assists (14-7) as the visitors.
The third quarter was a different story. Ariza's trey at 8:53 opened a stretch
of 11 straight Washington points. Boston remained in front, however, and owned
a 76-73 edge heading into the fourth.
Martell Webster's four-point play midway through the frame gave the Wizards
their first lead of the contest, 88-87. Sullinger followed with a jumper to
restore Boston's lead, and there were four ties in the final 4:06 before
Green's off-balance three tied it with 1:18 to play.
The Wizards had won four of five ... Washington outscored Boston 48-28 in the
paint and outrebounded the Celtics 50-42 ... Both teams had 18 turnovers.
