Final Score: Washington 104, Minnesota 100
Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - John Wall deposited 14 points and matched
a career-high with 16 assists as the Washington Wizards snapped a four-game
losing skid to top the Minnesota Timberwolves 104-100 on Tuesday.
Wall pushed the Wizards in front with a jumper with 1:26 remaining but Kevin
Martin drilled a 3-pointer at the other end to put the visitors on top.
The Wizards took the shot clock down on their next possession, and on a broken
play, Wall swung a pass to Martell Webster for a contested triple and a 100-98
Bradley Beal and Nene scored 25 and 20 points, respectively, and put the game
away with a set of free throws in the final seconds.
Webster made five 3s en route to 17 points while filling in for an injured
Trevor Ariza. Marcin Gortat netted 14 points on 7-of-10 from the floor.
The loss spoiled yet another terrific effort from Kevin Love, who tallied 25
points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
Love got off to a hot start, dropping 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the
first quarter. Minnesota shot 60 percent as a team and led 34-27 after one.
"I thought he was going for 70 in the first eight minutes," Washington head
coach Randy Wittman said of Love.
Nikola Pekovic and J.J. Barea pushed the Wolves' lead to double figures with
layups early in the second quarter and it ballooned to 16 points on a Robbie
Hummel corner 3 midway through the period. Washington weathered the storm but
still trailed 63-51 at intermission.
Beal's 3 sparked a Washington run to claw back to within a point at 5:34 of
the third and his three-point play put the visitors in front 75-74 later in
The biggest lead of the fourth quarter belonged to the Wizards when Wall found
Jan Vesely for an alley-oop in transition. Vesely shot 4-for-4 in the contest
with all of his baskets coming at the rim, including three alley-oops.
The difference in the clash was Minnesota's inability to stop Washington in
transition. The Wizards outscored the Wolves in fastbreak points, 33-9.
"I just thought we were very impatient with what we were trying to do,"
Minnesota head coach Rick Adelman said. "I thought everybody was trying to
make the home run play, trying to win the play in one possession and not make
you guard us."
Wall previously recorded 16 assists against the Lakers on March 22 ... Corey
Brewer scored 16 points and Pekovic had 13 ... Every member of Washington's
starting unit recorded at least two assists.
