Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - New Sacramento Kings coach Mike Malone has officially hired his father as one of his assistants.
Brendan Malone joins the Kings after five seasons with the Orlando Magic under head coach Stan Van Gundy.
The Malones become only the second father-son duo to hold the title of NBA head coach, joining Bill and Eric Musselman (Bill with Minnesota and Cleveland, Eric for Golden State and Sacramento). The Malones also worked on the same staff as assistants for the New York Knicks in 2003-04.
Brendan Malone was the first head coach of the Toronto Raptors (1995-96). He has been an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons. In 1996, he worked as a consultant for the Seattle Supersonics during their run to the NBA Finals.
Brendan Malone spent the 2004-05 season with Cleveland, where he served as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach for the final 18 games of that season.
"I'm excited to add a coach with the breadth of basketball knowledge my father provides," said Mike Malone. "Aside from the benefits of having a trusted family member by my side, he's a talented coach who brings more than 25 years of invaluable NBA experience to Sacramento."
Mike Malone was named head coach on June 3.
