Final Score: Cincinnati 3, Los Angeles 2
Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Homer Bailey got the best of Clayton
Kershaw, and Cincinnati edged Los Angeles by a 3-2 count in Wednesday's finale
of a three-game series.
Bailey (5-3) allowed two runs on five hits, fanning six and walking one over
seven effective innings. Three relievers finished off the victory, including
Aroldis Chapman, who struck out two in a perfect ninth to earn his fifth save.
Brandon Phillips hit a two-run homer for the Reds, who avoided a sweep and put
the brakes on a four-game losing skid.
Clayton Kershaw (3-2) was charged with seven hits and three runs despite
striking out nine over seven full frames for the Dodgers, who had won three
straight. Yasiel Puig launched a solo homer in defeat.
"Both guys threw the ball well. Clayton gave up a couple early, and
Homer was good all night," noted Dodgers manager Don Mattingly.
Puig pulled the Dodgers back within a run in the home sixth on his 11th
longball of the season, but Bailey retired the next three batters in turn.
He worked a 1-2-3 seventh before exiting, then Manny Parra and Jonathan
Broxton combined to hold the hosts off the board in the eighth. Dee Gordon
worked a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second and went to third on a Puig
fly, but was stranded when Hanley Ramirez flied out.
Chapman retired the side in order to preserve the one-run margin.
Bailey had a 2-0 lead before hitting the mound for the first time. Todd
Frazier doubled with one down in the first and Phillips followed with a two-
run shot to left.
"It was a fastball up and I hit it pretty good. Regardless of who was
pitching, it was great to do something positive to help the team," said
Bailey protected that lead until the fifth. Justin Turner stroked a leadoff
double, and though he was stranded at second on a Drew Butera groundout, he
managed to score on a Devin Mesoraco passed ball. Kershaw and Gordon
followed with base hits, but Andre Ethier grounded into an inning-ending
Frazier began the sixth with a double, moved up on a groundout and after a
walk to Mesoraco, scored on Kershaw's wild pitch to give Cincinnati a 3-1
Reds first baseman Brayan Pena led all players with three hits ... Cincinnati
improved to 9-13 in one-run games this season, while Los Angeles fell to 7-8
in such contests.
