Final Score: Milwaukee 2, Cincinnati 0
Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Wily Peralta threw his first-career shutout
as the Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Cincinnati Reds, 2-0, in the second of a
three-game series at Miller Park.
Peralta (6-9) scattered three hits and four walks and struck out six to go
the distance for the first time in his big league career. Peralta had never
lasted more than seven innings coming into the game.
"Wily had outstanding command today. His slider was working well, and as the
game went on he had some really good change-ups," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke
said. "As you watched him on the mound you could see his confidence grow, you
could see it in his body language."
Logan Schafer provided the game's only offense with a two-run homer, his first
of the season. Ryan Braun returned to the lineup after missing nearly a month
with a hand injury and went 1-for-3.
Tony Cingrani (3-1) took his first loss of the season after giving up three
hits, including Schafer's homer, over seven frames. Cingrani walked two and
struck out 10 in the setback.
Martin Maldonado walked to open the fifth inning and Schafer followed with a
homer to right-center field.
"Tony threw a really good game. He walked Maldonado and gave up Schafer's only
home run. That's what happens when you're not playing well," Reds manager
Dusty Baker said.
The Reds squandered an opportunity to score in the seventh inning. Derrick
Robinson roped a line drive to left field. The ball skipped past left fielder
Jeff Bianchi and rattled around in the corner before kicking out and rolling
down the warning track. Robinson raced around third and broke for home.
Bianchi hit Jean Segura with a relay throw and the All-Star shortstop
delivered a strike to the plate to catch Robinson and preserve the shutout.
Peralta returned to the mound in the ninth inning to a standing ovation. The
right-hander retired the first two hitters of the inning before walking Joey
Votto. Brandon Phillips, though, grounded out to Segura to end the game.
