Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers made it official Friday and agreed to a one-year contract with pitcher Joba Chamberlain.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but various reports on Thursday indicated the deal to be worth $2.5 million.
Chamberlain spent his entire seven-year career with the New York Yankees and last season posted a record of 2-1 with a 4.93 ERA in 45 relief appearances.
"We are pleased to add an experienced pitcher like Joba to our roster," said Tigers president, CEO and general manager David Dombrowski in a statement. "Joba is an established reliever who can help fill the seventh and eighth inning role for our club, and will be a nice addition to our bullpen."
The 28-year-old right-hander burst onto the scene in 2007 with 34 strikeouts in 24 innings over 19 appearances, then bounced between the rotation and bullpen the following season before settling into the rotation in 2009.
Chamberlain helped the Yankees to a World Series title in 2009 with a record of 9-6 and a 4.75 ERA in 32 games, all but one as a starter. He was moved to the bullpen for the 2009 playoffs and has not started a game since that season.
In 260 career games, including 43 as a starter, Chamberlain owns a mark of 23-14 with a 3.85 ERA. He has 446 strikeouts in 444 2/3 innings, but has seen his velocity diminish in recent years, particularly after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2011.
The Tigers also designated infielder Danny Worth for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
