Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Texas Rangers signed three players to minor-league contracts Thursday, including veteran right-handed reliever Jose Contreras.
Contreras, right-hander Nate Adcock and outfielder Bryan Petersen signed deals for 2014 and received non-roster invitations to major-league spring training.
Contreras, who turns 42 on Friday, had Tommy John surgery on his elbow in 2012 and pitched in just seven games for the Pittsburgh Pirates this past season before going on the disabled list in May because of lower-back inflammation.
A former starter, he is 78-67 with a 4.57 ERA and 889 strikeouts in 299 career games for the Yankees, White Sox, Rockies, Phillies and Pirates.
Adcock, 25, went 1-4 with a 3.79 ERA in 36 appearances for the Royals in 2011 and '12 and split last season in the Royals and Diamondbacks organizations.
Petersen, 27, batted .195 in 84 games this past season, his third in the majors -- all with the Marlins. He is a career .220 hitter in 181 games.
