Ann Arbor, MI (Sports Network) - Michigan head men's basketball coach John Beilein agreed to a three-year contract extension that will keep him with the Wolverines through the 2018-19 season.
Beilein took over the program after leading West Virginia to the 2007 NIT title. Michigan has reached the NCAA Tournament in four of the six seasons under Beilein and last year tied a school record with 31 wins before losing to Louisville in the national championship game.
"John is a tremendous ambassador of the University of Michigan and one of the most highly respected coaches in the country," athletic director Dave Brandon said in a statement Wednesday. "He recruits outstanding young men to represent the men's basketball program and develops them as players, students and future leaders. John has built a program that will compete for Big Ten championships on a regular basis and make exciting NCAA Tournament runs."
The Wolverines have gone 122-85 with Beilein as head coach. The 60-year-old owns a 673-403 career record that also includes stints with Erie Community College, Nazareth College, LeMoyne, Canisius and Richmond.
"My staff and I will continue to work every day with our student-athletes to ensure they grow from this incredible educational opportunity," Beilein said in a statement. "At the same time, competing for Big Ten championship will be the goal each and every year."
