Pittsburgh Penguins Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Chris Kunitz, LW3/29/2015 10:34:00 PM
Description: Penguins left wing Chris Kunitz scored his first goal in over a month Sunday against San Jose.
Insight: The 17 goals and 40 points are definitely solid, but he is simply nowhere near the player he was early on this season.
Patric Hornqvist, RW3/29/2015 10:32:00 PM
Description: Penguins right winger Patric Hornqvist scored a goal during Sunday's shootout win over the Sharks.
Insight: He also had six shots on goal, four penalty minutes, and a plus-one rating on the night. Hornqvist now has 24 goals, 46 points, 36 penalty minutes, and a plus-14 rating through 59 games this season.
David Perron, LW3/29/2015 3:26:00 PM
Description: Penguins left wing David Perron is doubtful for Sunday's game against the Sharks according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Insight: Perron isn't injured but sick. He missed Saturday's game due to illness, and it looked like he will miss one more. At least he isn't hurt like practically the rest of the Penguins lineup.
Kris Letang, D3/29/2015 1:17:00 PM
Description: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has left the hospital and has a concussion according to NHL.com.
Insight: Letang went awkwardly into the boards on a hit from Shane Doan on Saturday. Letang is listed as day-to-day, and there is no telling how long he could be out.
Kris Letang, D3/28/2015 7:37:00 PM
Description: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang went to the hospital to be evaluated after taking a hit from Shane Doan.
Insight: On the same day Pittsburgh regains Patrick Hornqvist and Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins lose Letang. There is no indication as to how serious his injury is, but Letang's history would suggest the Penguins will be extremely cautious.
Evgeni Malkin, C3/28/2015 6:28:00 PM
Description: Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin returned to the ice on Saturday versus the Coyotes and picked up two assists.
Insight: Malkin finished minus-one, but he was second only to Sidney Crosby with five shots on net in the game. Both of Malkin's assists came on the power play. Malkin has averaged more than a point per game, however, he hasn't played enough games to stay in the points race. Malkin has 70 points while Crosby leads the league with 78.
Sidney Crosby, C3/28/2015 6:23:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Sidney Crosby recorded three points in Pittsburgh's, 3-2, victory over Arizona on Saturday.
Insight: The Penguins have had a tough March, but not to the fault of Crosby. He has five goals and 11 assists in the month and has retake the NHL lead in points with 78. For how little Pittsburgh has scored this month as a team, fantasy owners should be very takeful Crosby has still managed to be productive.
Brandon Sutter, C3/26/2015 9:37:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Brandon Sutter scored a goal during Thursday's loss versus Carolina.
Insight: Sutter has a solid 17 goals, but with just 29 points through 72 games, he is not a relevant fantasy option.
Marc-Andre Fleury, G3/24/2015 9:38:00 PM
Description: Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury allowed three goals in the overtime loss to the Blues.
Insight: Fleury made 32 saves in the loss. He has been great this season, but Fleury has come back down to earth a bit, allowing at least three goals in three of the last five games.
Sidney Crosby, C3/22/2015 8:50:00 AM
Description: Penguins center Sidney Crosby recorded two points during Saturday's victory against the Coyotes.
Insight: He had a goal and an assist, along with three shots and a plus-one rating on the night. Crosby now has 23 goals and 72 points through 66 games this season. Brandon Sutter and Daniel Winnik also tallied for Pittsburgh.
Kris Letang, D3/19/2015 11:47:00 PM
Description: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang scored the only goal for Pittsburgh in the, 2-1, loss to the Stars on Thursday.
Insight: The lack of scoring is getting a little ridiculous for Pittsburgh. The Penguins have scored two goals in the last 12 periods. Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby and Patric Hornqvist haven't played in all of those 12 periods, but it is still embarrassing. Letang led the team with seven shots on Thursday. He has 11 goals and 42 assists with a plus-12 rating in 65 games this season.
Thomas Greiss, G3/17/2015 9:33:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh backup goalie Thomas Greiss had another solid start in a losing effort on Tuesday.
Insight: In his last two starts, Greiss has allowed one goal in each game, but the Penguins failed to score in both contests. Pittsburgh has one goal in the last three games. Greiss is 8-5-3 this season as Marc Andre Fleury's backup.
Evgeni Malkin, C3/16/2015 7:07:00 PM
Description: Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin will be out for about a week, according to general manager Jim Rutherford.
Insight: It could be as much as two weeks, but nevertheless, Malkin will be sidelined for a few games.
Patric Hornqvist, RW3/15/2015 3:47:00 PM
Description: Penguins right winger Patric Hornqvist suffered an injury in the third period of Sunday's game versus the Red Wings.
Insight: Coach Mike Johnston said after the game "He's got an injury. We'll find out tomorrow. It looked bad when he came off the ice," according to the team's twitter page. Not good. Hopefully that's not the case because he would be a big blow to fantasy owners and the Penguins.
David Perron, LW3/15/2015 3:15:00 PM
Description: Penguins left wing David Perron scored Pittsburgh's only goal on Sunday as Detroit romped Pittsburgh, 5-1.
Insight: Perron actually has the only goal for Pittsburgh in the last two games. The Penguins had plenty of opportunities with 43 shots on net versus the Red Wings, but Pittsburgh was way too undisciplined in the game. Pittsburgh had 64 penalty minutes in the game. Perron has 17 goals and 23 assists in 69 games this season.
Marc-Andre Fleury, G3/15/2015 2:47:00 PM
Description: Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury was chased out of the net on Saturday against the Red Wings.
Insight: Fleury lasted about a period and a half, allowing four goals on 16 shots. It was an awful game for the Penguins all around, who had 30 penalty minutes in the first period alone. Chalk this one up to a very undisciplined showing from Pittsburgh.
Evgeni Malkin, C3/15/2015 12:37:00 PM
Description: Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin is not playing on Sunday versus the Red Wings.
Insight: Malkin suffered a lower-body injury on Saturday against the Bruins. Hopefully he returns soon as fantasy owners in the playoffs will really miss him.
Sidney Crosby, C3/15/2015 12:36:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Sidney Crosby is playing against the Red Wings on Sunday.
Insight: Crosby did not play on Saturday versus the Bruins. During warmups, Crosby began to not feel well, which may have caused some alarm, but he was apparently sick. He will be needed on Sunday as Evgeni Malkin is not playing.
Evgeni Malkin, C3/14/2015 5:31:00 PM
Description: Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin left Saturday's game versus the Bruins with an apparent leg injury.
Insight: Malkin took a hit from Chris Kelly in the first period. He left, returned to the game, and then left for good. The Penguins could be without Malkin and Sidney Crosby on Sunday.
Sidney Crosby, C3/14/2015 5:28:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Sidney Crosby did not play versus the Bruins on Saturday due to not feeling well according to the team's twitter page.
Insight: Crosby warmed up for the game but didn't feel well, so he was a late scratch. It is unclear whether Crosby was feeling sick or injured. It is also uncertain if he will play on Sunday.
Sidney Crosby, C3/12/2015 9:48:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Sidney Crosby had a big night during Thursday's victory over the Oilers.
Insight: He had a goal, two assists, four shots, and a plus-two rating. Crosby now has 23 goals, 70 points, 43 penalty minutes, and a plus-eight rating through 63 games.
Marc-Andre Fleury, G3/8/2015 9:16:00 AM
Description: Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury posted a shutout Saturday against San Jose.
Insight: Fleury was fantastic all night, and it took overtime to defeat the Sharks. He stopped all 31 shots on goal, and is now 30-14-6 with a 2.16 GAA and .924 save percentage. Fleury is firmly in the running for the Vezina Trophy.
Patric Hornqvist, RW3/8/2015 9:06:00 AM
Description: Penguins right winger Patric Hornqvist was the lone offensive star for either team on Saturday night.
Insight: Pittsburgh defeated Los Angeles 1-0 in overtime, with Hornqvist scoring the lone goal, which ultimately went unassistsed. He now has 22 goals, 42 points, 28 penalty minutes, and a plus-11 rating through 53 games this season.
Marc-Andre Fleury, G3/6/2015 7:11:00 PM
Description: Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury will not start on Friday versus the Ducks.
Insight: Fleury is getting the night off in favor of backup Thomas Greiss. He has a 2.82 GAA and .906 save percentage in 14 games this season, so quite a drop off from Fleury.
Marc-Andre Fleury, G3/1/2015 8:14:00 PM
Description: Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury picked up another win on Sunday.
Insight: He defeated Columbus for his 29th victory of the season. Fleury is now 29-13-6 overall, and has been better than expected in 2014-15.
Evgeni Malkin, C3/1/2015 8:11:00 PM
Description: Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin finished with three points during Sunday's victory against the Blue Jackets.
Insight: He had two goals and an assist, along with six shots on goal. Malkin now has 26 goals, 64 points, and 60 penalty minutes through 57 games this season. Steve Downie, David Perron, and Derrick Pouliot also tallied for Pittsburgh.
Marc-Andre Fleury, G2/25/2015 10:54:00 PM
Description: Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury allowed three goals during Wednesday's victory versus Washington.

Description: Penguins left wing Chris Kunitz notched two points during Wednesday's victory against the Capitals.

Marc-Andre Fleury, G2/22/2015 8:37:00 PM
Description: Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury is just on fire, having allowed just seven goals in his last seven starts.
Insight: More importantly, he won on Sunday as Pittsburgh routed Florida, 5-1. The Panthers really played hard in the first two periods, but Fleury made some excellent saves to keep Pittsburgh in the lead. Then the Penguins offense took over with four goals in the final 21 minutes. Fleury is 27-13-6 this season.
Evgeni Malkin, C2/22/2015 8:34:00 PM
Description: Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin broke out of his slump as he scored a pair of goals on Sunday versus the Panthers.
Insight: In his first seven games this month, Malkin had just two points, but he has three goals and two assists in his last three games. Malkin scored in the final minute of the second period, which really turned the tide against the Panthers. Pittsburgh scored three goals in the final period to win, 5-1. Malkin has 24 goals and 34 assists in 55 games this season.
Patric Hornqvist, RW2/22/2015 8:31:00 PM
Description: Penguins right winger Patric Hornqvist scored a pair of goals and added an assist as Pittsburgh defeated Florida, 5-1.
Insight: Hornqvist has been scoring some dirty goals lately, which is exactly what the Penguins needed to jump start their offense. Hornqvist has also scored on the power play twice in the last two games after Pittsburgh entered the weekend scoreless on its last 19 power-play attempts. Hornqvist has 18 goals and 19 assists in 47 games this season.
Blake Comeau, LW2/22/2015 12:01:00 AM
Description: Penguins winger Blake Comeau had a big night during Saturday's victory against the Blues.
Insight: He had two goals and an assist, along with four shots and a plus-three rating. Comeau is a not a worthy fantasy option, as he is ranked outside the top 390 in standard leagues, but does have double-digit goals (12) on the season.
Evgeni Malkin, C2/19/2015 11:18:00 PM
Description: Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin scored in Thursday's, 2-1, loss versus the Blue Jackets.
Insight: Despite the goal, Malkin has just three points in the last eight games and four points in the last 10 games. That's not enough production from the first-round pick.
Marc-Andre Fleury, G2/19/2015 9:43:00 PM
Description: Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury was spectacular again on Thursday but had nothing to show for it.
Insight: At the end of the first period, Columbus could have easily led Pittsburgh, 3-0 or even 4-0, but Fleury made some spectacular saves to keep the Blue Jackets to a, 1-0, lead. In the final three minutes and the game tied, 1-1, the Penguins turned the puck over in their own zone on the power play. Fleury made the first save on Matt Calvert but was unable to make the second save after teammate Blake Comeau ran into him. Fleury drops to 26-13-6 this season.
Marc-Andre Fleury, G2/17/2015 9:48:00 PM
Description: Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury played well, but Pittsburgh lost again to Washington, 3-1.
Insight: Fleury stopped 30-of-32 attempts in the game. The only goals he allowed were a breakaway from Alex Ovechkin and a five-on-three power-play goal. The Penguins, however, have been unable to score on Branden Holtby this season. They have scored just one goal against him in nine periods. Fleury falls to 26-12-6 this season.
Beau Bennett, RW2/15/2015 3:40:00 PM
Description: Penguins right wing Beau Bennett registered nine shots on goal to lead all skaters in the Pittsburgh versus Chicago matchup on Sunday.
Insight: Bennett was everywhere, recording five shots on net in the first period alone. Bennett took a shot that hit off Corey Crawford's pad and redirected right to Nick Spaling, who scored on the play. Bennett was credited with an assist. At this rate, Bennett could begin to see some more power-play time as Pittsburgh tries to break its 0-for-15 streak it has on the man advantage in the last seven games.
Nick Spaling, C2/15/2015 3:35:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Nick Spaling scored on Sunday versus the Blackhawks.

Description: Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury took a very tough loss versus the Blackhawks on Sunday.

Description: Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford is unsure if Evgeni Malkin will return immediately after the All-Star break according to Bleacher Report. Description: Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves in a shootout loss to the Blackhawks on Wednesday.

Steve Downie, RW1/2/2015 9:50:00 PM
Description: Penguins left winger Steve Downie scored two goals in his return to the ice Friday.
Insight: Downie's presence was felt all over the ice in his first game back. He scored two third-period goals to hold off any Lightning comeback. The last goal was an empty-netter to seal the, 6-3, victory. Downie also played enforcer, moving into a faceoff circle to protect Sidney Crosby. That move eventually led to a penalty, and although it was a dumb penalty, fantasy owners don't mind since it game them two minutes of PIM. Pittsburgh killed the penalty anyway.
Sidney Crosby, C1/2/2015 9:41:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Sidney Crosby had four assists on Friday night.
Insight: It was nice to see Pittsburgh explode for six goals in a victory over Tampa Bay. In the last 20 games, the high-flying Penguins have scored more than three goals just three times. Insight: At just 20-years-old, Sutter scored 21 goals and 40 points in 72 games during 2009-2010. He did score five goals and two assists in 13 playoff games last spring, so Pittsburgh hopes he can built upon that. Sutter will lliekly be the team's third-line center.
Pascal Dupuis, LW10/1/2014 12:02:00 PM
Description: Penguins winger Pascal Dupuis has played in just 87 games over the last two seasons.
Insight: Dupuis missed 43 games last year due to a torn MCL and ACL. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports his knee feels 100 percent in training camp. Although Dupuis and Sidney Crosby had great chemistry when Dupius was healthy, we would suggest owners to use the wait-and-see approach.
Olli Maatta, D10/1/2014 11:58:00 AM
Description: Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta had a very nice rookie season with nine goals and 20 assists.
Insight: Pittsburgh would love to give Maatta some more playing time, but the Penguins have plenty of good defenseman. Kris Letang and Christian Ehrhoff will get the power-play minutes and Paul Martin is likely still the team's best overall defenseman. Maatta might not be a start worthy defenseman on draft day, but check back if one of those first three players get injured.
Christian Ehrhoff, D10/1/2014 11:49:00 AM
Description: Penguins defenseman Christian Ehrhoff has a great chance to play on the team's power-play line this year.
Insight: Ehrhoff scored six goals and 27 assists with the Sabres last year, so it is safe to expect those numbers or even greater based just on the fact Ehrhoff will benefit from playing with Sidney Crosby and company. At the very least he should see a huge improvement in plus/minus. Ehrhoff's was -27 a year ago.
Kris Letang, D10/1/2014 11:40:00 AM
Description: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang will be back at full strength in 2014-2015.
Insight: Letang missed significant time last season after suffering a stroke in January, but he returned for the playoffs. Letang is one of the best offensive defenseman in the league, and even with the addition of Christian Ehrhoff, who could take some time away from Letang on the power play, Letang is a top-15 defenseman.
Chris Kunitz, LW10/1/2014 11:36:00 AM
Description: Penguins left wing Chris Kunitz scored a career-high 35 goals and 68 points last season.
Insight: Kunitz has averaged 0.81 points per game in his five-plus seasons with the Penguins. It is hard to assume those numbers will again go up this year, but even at 35 years old, Kunitz has shown no signs of slowing down.
Evgeni Malkin, C10/1/2014 11:33:00 AM
Description: The only concern surrounding Evgeni Malkin for fantasy owner's is his health.
Insight: Malkin has not played a full season since the team won the Stanley Cup in 2008-2009. His talent speaks for itself, however, and the there is just too much skill to not take Malkin at least in the first five picks.
Sidney Crosby, C10/1/2014 11:30:00 AM
Description: Penguins center Sidney Crosby is the top fantasy option once again in 2014.
Insight: The only other player owners should really consider with the No.1 pick is Alex Ovechkin but that is because Ovechkin provides higher value as a winger than Crosby does as a center. Crosby is the best hockey player in the world and is feeling good after offseason wrist surgery.
Evgeni Malkin, C9/29/2014 5:47:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Evgeni Malkin is likely to miss the final two preseason games according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Insight: It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it cannot be good either. Malkin will now go into the regular season without playing a single exhibition game, and one has to wonder about whether he will be ready to go on opening day.
Beau Bennett, RW9/27/2014 3:07:00 PM
Description: Penguins right wing Beau Bennett is expected to miss six weeks, according to coach Mike Johnston.
Insight: Anther bad break for Bennett who missed 51 games last season with a wrist injury. He was set to play on a line with Evgeni Malkin which is always a good thing for his fantasy value, but now he could miss 20 games.
Evgeni Malkin, C9/18/2014 1:32:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Evgeni Malkin has a minor undisclosed injury according to Penguins.nhl.com
Insight: Malkin, along with Sidney Crosby, will miss the start of training camp with minor injuries. Neither one is supposed to be serious. The Penguins will be holding them out as a precaution.
Sidney Crosby, C9/18/2014 1:27:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Sidney Crosby will miss the start of training camp due to an undisclosed injury according to Penguins.nhl.com
Insight: Crosby's injury is apparently not related to his wrist, which he had surgery on this summer. Whatever it is, it is considered minor. The Penguins will be cautious with their captain once training camp begins. No point in pushing Crosby at this point. This should not at all effect Crosby's fantasy draft position.
Christian Ehrhoff, D7/1/2014 8:34:00 PM
Description: After being bought out by the Sabres a couple days ago, defenseman Christian Ehrhoff signed with the Penguins Tuesday.
Insight: Ehrhoff inked a one-year deal worth $4 million. The 31-year-old Ehrhoff has averaged eight goals and 29 assists (37 points) per 82 games in his career. While the Penguins' top power-play unit has consisted of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Chris Kunitz, James Neal and Kris Letang the past few seasons, they just traded Neal and may go with Ehrhoff in his place in 2014-15.
Sidney Crosby, C6/24/2014 9:47:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby has won the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player for the second time in his career.
Insight: Crosby's first MVP came in 2007 when he was only 19 years old. The 104 points Crosby netted this year were his most since 2010. The former No. 1 pick should be an MVP front-runner for the forseeable future.
Olli Maatta, D5/22/2014 8:16:00 PM
Description: Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta needs 4-to-6 months to recover from shoulder surgery. SOURCE: Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Sidney Crosby, CCold5/14/2014 10:22:00 AM
Description: The Penguins didn't get much out of Sidney Crosby in this year's postseason.
Insight: Crosby disappeared over the final three games of the Rangers series, missing all six of his shots on goal while recording a -2 rating. Dating back to last season, Crosby has just one goal in his last 18 playoff appearances.
Brooks Orpik, D5/12/2014 9:19:00 PM

Sidney Crosby, C5/7/2014 10:12:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby handed out two assists in Wednesday's Game 4 victory over New York.
Insight: Crosby had been having a quiet series prior to Wednesday, at least by his standards (one point in three games). The Penguins are in the driver's seat now. They lead the Rangers three games to one with Game 5 Friday night in Pittsburgh.
Evgeni Malkin, C5/7/2014 10:07:00 PM
Description: Pittsburgh center Evgeni Malkin netted his fifth goal of the playoffs Wednesday in a win over New York.
Insight: He also added an assist. The Penguins can close out the Rangers Friday night in Game 5. Malkin has five points this series (two goals, three assists in four games).
Marc-Andre Fleury, GHot5/5/2014 10:20:00 PM

Insight: He's stopped 57 shots over that span. Tonight was Fleury's eighth career postseason shutout. Game 4 is Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

Description: Pittsburgh defenseman Brooks Orpik is doubtful for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals Friday against New York.

Marcel Goc, C4/25/2014 1:50:00 PM
Description: Penguins center Marcel Goc says he feels good enough to play in Game 5 of the series, but the decision is up to the coaches.
Insight: The 30-year-old had 25 points (11 G) in 74 games with the Penguins and Panthers this season. The Penguins have given up 14 goals in the first four games of the series and Goc might help.
Beau Bennett, RW4/21/2014 10:09:00 PM
