MLB denies protest by Rays over replay challenge

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that it has denied the Tampa Bay Rays' protest of Saturday's 5-4 10-inning loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The game was completed under protest from the Rays following a controversial call in the fourth inning. Blue Jays pitcher Mark Buehrle attempted to pick off Wil Myers, who was ruled safe diving back to the bag at first. Buehrle was back on the mound ready to throw his next pitch when the umpires went to review the play.

Myers was ultimately called out following a video review, but Rays manager Joe Maddon immediately protested, claiming that the call could not be challenged because Buehrle was already on the mound for his next pitch.

Last Wednesday the San Francisco Giants became the first team in 28 years to successfully win a protest.
