Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
You're in a battle for the championship, it's mid-August, and you are in need of a couple of extra home runs to put you over the top. Where do you turn?
There are a few options that might still be available.
Gary Sheffield has done nothing all season and on August 12th the Detroit Tigers put him up on waivers. He passed. He also began to hit like the Gary Sheffield of old.
In the seven games since the announcement that he cleared waivers, Sheffield is 9-for-26 (.346) with five runs scored, three home runs and eight RBI. The Tigers opponents over the next two weeks are Texas, Kansas City, Cleveland and then Kansas City again. Sheffield should continue to hit for the next two weeks at least.
With Evan Longoria and Carl Crawford out of the lineup, the Tampa Bay Rays were searching for some offense. I think they found it with Cliff Floyd. The veteran has looked pretty good of late and has been installed as the cleanup hitter. Over the last six games he is hitting .400 (8-for-20) with eight runs scored, one homer and four runs knocked in. The home run, against Jon Garland, was a line drive that reminded me of when Floyd was a scary sight in the batters box that pitchers feared. He's not that anymore, but he could help you for a while.
Ty Wigginton, if available, would also fill the role. He has 16 home runs for the season, but more importantly has four since being put in left field as a replacement for slugger Carlos Lee a week ago. He is a multi-position player which is why he is probably on a roster, but if he isn't, snap him up right away.
Victor Martinez is on rehab assignment and actually hit a home run on Sunday. He hasn't hit one, for real, all season, but he could be back soon.
Jeff Francoeur has been horrible all season and in fact, was sent to the minors in July. But over the last six games he is hitting .363 with four runs scored, a homer and five RBI. More significantly, he has struck out just one time. He could be worth a shot.
