Description: The Seahawks have released quarterback Terrelle Pryor.
Insight: Tarvis Jackson beat him out for the backup job behind Russell Wilson. Pryor should have many suitors with his unique physical ability. He completed 21-of-39 passes for 281 yards, one touchdown and two picks. He also ran for 97 yards and a touchdown.
Description: Niners linebacker Aldon Smith has been suspended for nine games for violating the league's personal conduct policy.
Insight: He won't make his first appearance until Week 11. Smith is extremely talented but he won't ever reach his full potential until he conquers some of his off-the-field demons. The 49ers defense is already without Glenn Dorsey (torn biceps) and Navorro Bowman (knee) and fantasy owners should consider slightly downgrading their value.
Henry Josey, RB
8/29/2014 3:03:00 PM
Description: Running back Henry Josey was cut by the Eagles despite having a solid preseason.
Insight: Josey should certainly get a shot with another club. He's got speed (4.43) and showed he could play in the NFL averaging 6.6 ypc in the preseason. He simply ran into a numbers game with the Eagles with LeSean McCoy, Darren Sproles, Chris Polk and Kenjon Barner in front of him.
Description: Fantasy owners don't have to worry about BenJarvus Green-Ellis taking carries from Giovani Bernard or Jeremy Hill as he was cut Friday from the 53-man roster.
Insight: Giovani Bernard and rookie Jeremy Hill have shown in preseason they can get the job done and both have solid fantasy value. Bernard is the starter and is even more valuable in PPR leagues, but Hill is going to get plenty of work.
Description: Vikings receiver Jerome Simpson has been suspended for three games for a last November DUI arrest.
Insight: Simpson isn't likely on fantasy radar screens as he's fallen to No. 4 on the Minnesota depth chart behind Cordarrelle Patterson, Greg Jennings, and Jarius Wright. he had 48 receptions for 726 yards and one touchdowns last season.
Description: Pittsburgh wideout Martavis Bryant suffered a right AC shoulder sprain in the final exhibition game, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Insight: Bryant was well down the depth chart and not on fantasy radar screen. It's Antonio Brown and a bunch of question marks headed by Markus Wheaton, Lance Moore and the always under-producing Darrius Heyward-Bey.
Description: Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr will start Week 1, according to ESPN Raiders reporter Bill Williamson.
Insight: Carr looked good again Thursday night and has forced Coach Dennins Allen into a tough decision. Neither is a fantasy worthy starter, but Carr has more upside. Carr hit Denarius Moore twice for a touchdown against Seattle.
Description: Patriots tight end Tim Wright caught 4-of-6 targets for 43 yards in Thursday's preseason finale against the Giants.
Insight: Wright worked with the second-team offense and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The new Patriots tight end has enough talent to earn more playing time with the starters, but as of Week 1, he is just one of many potential targets for Tom Brady.
Description: Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel completed 6-of-17 passes for 83 yards with a touchdown and ran four times for 55 yards in Cleveland's preseason finale on Thursday.
Insight: Brian Hoyer started and led the offense to a 85-yard touchdown drive. Manziel was not particularly accurate, but in his unique style, he made plays with his legs. In four preseason games, Johnny Football is 30-of-58 for 296 yards, two touchdowns and no picks. He has also ran the ball 12 times for 88 yards and a touchdown. If Hoyer struggles early on this season, it will be tough to keep Manziel on the bench.
Description: Browns rookie running back Terrance West ran for just 13 yards on six carries, lost a fumble and was not targeted in the passing game in Cleveland's preseason finale Thursday.
Insight: Ben Tate has outplayed West in preseason, so Tate is locked in as Cleveland's starting running back. West had 31 carries and rushed for 83 yards this preseason. West is only a handcuff in redraft leagues, but that should not be taken lightly due to Tate's injury past.
Description: Bengals running back Jeremy Hill rushed 20 times for 90 yards and caught all six of his targets for 70 yards in Cincinnati's preseason finale Thursday.
Insight: Hill was impressive as the every-down back with Gio Bernard resting. He did leave the game with an elbow injury but returned to action. We are still unsure how Hill will be used, so he is not worth starting Week 1, but he looks to be at least a very capable handcuff.
Description: Vikings rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater completed 4-of-9 passes for 17 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' preseason finale Thursday night.
Insight: Bridgewater wraps up the preseason 30-of-49 for 283 yards, five touchdowns and no picks. But despite Bridgewater's 111.2 passer rating, Matt Cassel remains the starter. The rookie, however, has proved that he could see some action at some point this season.
Description: Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker ran some routes on the field before Denver's preseason finale on Thursday but still has multiple evaluations to clear in concussion protocol before he can be cleared to play Week 1 according to Jeff Legwold of ESPN.
Insight: Welker is on the right track in terms of returning to the field and its a great sign he felt well enough to fly with the team but like Legwold reported, the receiver has a long way to go. Stay tuned.
Description: Kansas City wide receiver A.J. Jenkins suffered a concussion in Thursday night's preseason finale.
Insight: Jenkins has had a very quiet training camp and battling injuries has been one of the biggest reasons why. It's very possible that Jenkins is on the roster bubble this weekend and suffering a concussion does not help his cause.
Description: Bengals running back Jeremy Hill left Thursday's preseason finale with an elbow injury.
Insight: Hill saw a somewhat surprising 20 touches in two quarters of action Thursday. Hill generated 123 all-purpose yards, while catching all five of his targets. His one bad play was a blown blocking assignment that resulted in a quarterback sack. The elbow injury is believed to be minor, and it continues to look like Hill will see more touches than originally forecast.
Description: Giants QB Eli Manning completed 1-of-4 passes for zero yards in New York's preseason finale on Thursday.
Insight: Manning finishes the preseason 20-of-41 for 188 yards, one touchdown, three fumbles, one fumble lost and five sacks taken. Manning is not a viable quarterback option this season. To say he is confused in new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo's offense is an understatement.
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel completed 3-of-7 passes for 56 yards in the Bills' preseason finale Thursday night.
Insight: With most starters not playing in the fourth preseason game across the league, the fact Manuel played speaks volumes as to how worried the Bills coaching staff probably is about their second-year quarterback. Manuel finished the preseason 50-of-82 for 517 yards, one touchdown, three turnovers and six sacks taken.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Thursday's preseason finale with a rib injury.
Insight: Watkins suffered the injury on a slant pattern where quarterback E.J. Manuel "stared him down" and then over threw him by "a good yard and a half". It's unclear if this is a reaggravation of his previous injury or if this is a new rib injury for Watkins. The receiver suffered bruised ribs in the last preseason game.
Description: Jaguars rookie quarterback Blake Bortles finished the preseason strong, completing 4-of-6 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown against the Falcons on Thursday.
Insight: Bortles threw a 57-yard bomb to fellow rookie Marqise Lee. The quarterback finished the preseason 32-of-51 for 521 yards, two touchdowns and no picks. It's looking more and more likely that Bortles will become the starting quarterback at some point this season. If you can be patient and sacrifice a spot on your bench for him, he could provide some late season value.
Description: Former Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez reiterated that he didn't want to play anymore in response to a question from Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.
Insight: Gonzalez did say he had inquires from a number of teams in the offseason. He'll finish his 17-year career with 1,325 receptions for 15,127 yards and 111 TDs. He would probably still be a fantasy starter if he came back even at age 38.
Description: According to the Charlotte Observer's Joe Person, Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said there's "no doubt" Cam Newton will play Week 1 despite his rib injury.
Insight: Newton has a hairline fracture in a few of his ribs, but normally, quarterbacks can play through this type of injury. Rivera also added that the zone-read will still be in play despite the injury. All good signs for Newton, but we will keep an eye on the situation the next week and a half.
Description: Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson wrote "it looks like (Giovani) Bernard and (Jeremy) Hill could both get about 200 attempts" on the ground this season.
Insight: Hill ran very well in the Bengals' third preseason game. Hobson speculated that BenJarvus Green-Ellis would not make the roster and thus leave Hill with the change-of-pace back role this year. The rookie is certainly the best between-the-tackles runner Cincinnati has and he could steal a few touchdowns from Bernard. Hill is a great pick at his current ADP of the 10th round and Bernard's value takes a bit of a hit as many thought he would reach 300 touches. That will be tough if Hill really gets 200 carries.
Description: Eagles tight ends coach Ted Williams told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Zach Ertz is "one of the best route-runners I've ever seen."
Insight: Fellow tight end Brent Celek remains the starter, but Chip Kelly used two-tight end sets 20 percent more often in the last eight games of 2013 than in the first eight games and should continue to use more this season. Celek has also developed into a great blocking tight end, so at the position, Ertz should see a majority of the targets. He is a low-end TE1 that can provide some excellent value and upside in a late round.
Description: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (knee) remains in a "good spot".
Insight: The Patriots acquired tight end Tim Wright on Tuesday, so many experts have begun to wonder if Gronkowski will actually be completely healthy. Schefter says the purpose of the trade was to provide depth and open up some cap space. It also gives Bill Belichick the option to return to its two tight end sets, which the team really hasn't done since Aaron Hernandez's arrest.
Description: The Miami Herald speculates that Lamar Miller has the edge over Knowshon Moreno for the starting running back job.
Insight: Head coach Joe Philbin has been praising Miller all week saying statements such as, "I like everything Lamar has done since he's gotten here. He's had an excellent offseason and camp." Miller and Moreno have split the first-team carries, but Miller is supposed to be the guy for Week 1 and Moreno will move into the third down role.
Description: Chiefs receiver Frankie Hammond is expected to start in place of Dwayne Bowe (suspension) Week 1.
Insight: Hammond, an 2013 undrafted free agent, has never played in a NFL regular season game, but has been solid in preseason so far with six catches for 90 yards. Still, this speaks to the lack of depth the Kansas City passing game has behind Bowe. Hammond is only a worthwhile fantasy start in very deep leagues.
Description: Steelers beat writer Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Steelers are not going to impose a team suspension on either Le'Veon Bell or LeGarrette Blount.
Insight: Bouchette listed two reasons why the Steelers will not suspend their running backs for their marijuana arrest. 1. Pittsburgh cannot afford to miss both running backs for even a game because they have absolutely no depth after Bell and Blount. 2. Team-imposed suspensions for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy are against the league's collective bargaining agreement. Therefore, only the NFL can suspend Bell and Blount, but the word is that still won't happen until after the season. Fantasy owners have been afraid to draft Bell too early since his arrest, so he can provide some tremendous value in the third or fourth round, but he is also still worthy of a second round selection.
Description: The Patriots have acquired Tim Wright and a 2015 fourth-round pick from the Buccaneers for Logan Mankins.
Insight: The deal clears up cap space for New England and gives its offense more flexibility. Wright is light for a tight end at 220 pounds but he may be able to serve in Aaron Hernandez' old role as the move tight end. He had 54 catches for 571 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie. It's unnecessary to target Wright in fantasy right now but he's another guy who will see targets. The Patriots receiving hierarchy is unclear after Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman.
Description: According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Broncos coach John Fox said Wes Welker is doing "fantastic" in the concussion protocol.
Insight: Welker has sustained three concussions since Nov. 17. He'll need to be symptom-free by next Monday to be eligible to return to a full practice in time for the Sept. 7 season opener and it looks like he's going to be ready. However, he's extremely risky because one hit could end his career. Emmanuel Sanders will get a huge boost in fantasy value, as will rookie Cody Latimer to a lesser extent, if Welker goes down.
Description: Broncos coach John Fox says receiver Wes Welker (concussion) hasn't said anything about retirement, according to Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com.
Insight: Welker has sustained three concussions since Nov. 17. He'll need to be symptom-free by next Monday to be eligible to return to a full practice in time for the Sept. 7 season opener. If Welker cannot play, Emmanuel Sanders will get a huge boost in fantasy value, as will rookie Cody Latimer to a lesser extent.
Description: Ravens running back Bernard Pierce has officially been diagnosed with a concussion, according to Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com.
Insight: The concussion is minor and Pierce is expected to be ready for Week 1. An injury at this point of the preseason would be terrible for Pierce, who will get a two-game chance to prove he deserves a larger role in the offense when Ray Rice returns from a suspension.
Description: The Vikings have named Matt Cassel the starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Rams.
Insight: Cassel is just keeping the seat warm for Teddy Bridgewater. The 32-year-old was respectable last year for the Vikings, completing 60.2 percent of his passes, averaging 7.11 yards per attempt and posting an 11/9 TD/INT ratio. Minnesota OC Norv Turner was able to get 4,372 yards and 26 touchdowns out of Cleveland's trio of Jason Campbell, Brandon Weeden and Brian Hoyer last season, so he should be able to build a decent passing offense with Cassel under center. Cassel starting shouldn't hurt the fantasy value of Adrian Peterson, Kyle Rudolph or Cordarrelle Patterson.
Description: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the team has not ruled out suspending running backs Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount for their recent arrests, according to ESPN.com.
Insight: Bell and Blount were arrested for marijuana possession on Aug. 20 and Bell was also charged with DUI. It's likely the Steelers will just wait for the legal process to play out and let the NFL punish Bell and Blount. Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe was recently suspended one game for getting arrested for marijuana possession in November. Rookie Dri Archer is Pittsburgh's third-string running back.
Description: Cardinals backup QB Ryan Lindley was released Monday.
Insight: The San Diego State product never proved he could play at the NFL level and playing in six games threw for a 52 percent completion rate with zero touchdowns and seven interceptions. Case closed. Drew Stanton will back up Carson Palmer.
Description: The Bears have waived QB Jordan Palmer.
Insight: Palmer has only played in four games since 2008. The move makes Jimmy Clausen the "handcuff" to oft-injured Jay Cutler.
Darius Reynaud, KR/PR
8/25/2014 10:55:00 AM
Description: Kicker returner Darius Reynaud was released by the Chicago Bears, who apparently will go with WR Chris Williams for both punts and kickoffs.
Insight: Reynaud had a small amount of fantasy value in 2012 with Tennessee when he returned two kickoffs and a punt for a touchdown and also worked out of the backfield, but has no fantasy value at this time.
Description: According to NFL.com, Raiders receiver Andre Holmes "looks buried" on the depth chart.
Insight: The 6-4, 210-pound Holmes had 366 receiving yards and a touchdown in the last five games last season and he was listed atop the Raiders' first depth chart of the preseason along with Rod Streater. However, he was demoted in the second preseason game and was the No. 5 receiver in Friday's game. Streater and James Jones are the best fantasy bets among Oakland's wideouts, but with Matt Schaub looking horrible this preseason there's not much reason to get excited.
Description: Raiders quarterback Matt Schaub is dealing with elbow soreness, according to Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune.
Insight: Schaub has completed just 24-of-47 (51.1%) for 218 yards (4.6 ypa) with zero touchdowns and one interception this season. He's looked as bad as his numbers suggest he's been. It won't be long before Derek Carr is starting for Oakland.
Description: Ravens running back Bernard Pierce tweeted that he's "fine" after suffering a head injury during Saturday's preseason game.
Insight: According to the Baltimore Sun, Pierce is expected to be ready for Week 1. He left Saturday's game with concussion symptoms but hasn't yet been officially diagnosed with a concussion. An injury at this point of the preseason would be terrible for Pierce, who will get a two-game chance to prove he deserves a larger role in the offense when Ray Rice returns from a suspension.
Description: According to the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers don't expect to know quarterback Cam Newton's status for Week 1 until next week. Newton sustained a hairline fracture in one of his ribs Saturday night.
Insight: Coach Ron Rivera said Newton won't play in the final preseason game, but he expects him to play in the season opener at Tampa Bay. In addition to the injury to his ribs, Newton is still recovering from offseason ankle surgery and his rushing output could be lean early in the season. Derek Anderson is Newton's backup.
Description: Bears quarterback Jimmy Clausen has won the backup job to starter Jay Cutler.
Insight: Jordan Palmer was cut Sunday. Clausen hasn't thrown a pass since he had 1,558 yards, three touchdowns and nine picks on 299 attempts (52.5 completion percentage, 5.21 yards per attempt) as a rookie in 2010. Of course, coach Marc Trestman also helped journeyman Josh McCown turn into a viable fantasy quarterback last season and Cutler has missed 12 games over the last three years.
Description: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has a hairline fracture in his ribs, according to Steve Reed of the Associated Press.
Insight: Newton took a shot to the ribs during Saturday's preseason game. He won't play in the fourth exhibition contest, but coach Ron Rivera thinks he'll be ready for Week 1. In addition to the injury to his ribs, Newton is still recovering from offseason ankle surgery and his rushing output could be lean early in the season.
Description: Broncos receiver Wes Welker was diagnosed with another concussion after Saturday's preseason game.
Insight: Welker caught a pass over the middle and took a shoulder to the head from Texans safety D.J. Swearinger. The 33-year-old sustained two concussions late in the 2013 season and missed three games. Emmanuel Sanders and Julius Thomas will see more targets if Welker is out.
Description: According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is out for the season after an MRI revealed that he re-tore the ACL in his left knee. Shaun Hill is now the starting quarterback
Insight: Bradford suffered the injury during Saturday's preseason game. He was entering a make-or-break season with St. Louis and now his future is up in the air. The former No. 1 overall pick will turn 27 in November. His injury is a blow to the fantasy value of St. Louis' pass-catchers (Kenny Britt, Tavon Austin, Jared Cook and sleeper Brian Quick) and should result in the Rams giving more carries to Zac Stacy.
Description: Wideout Ramses Barden was released by Jacksonville.
Insight: At 6-foot-6, 224 lbs Barden was supposed to develop into a big-time threat, but lacked the speed to get away from NFL defenders. The Jags will go with their two rookie Marqise lee and Allen Robinson
Description: Broncos kicker Matt Prater will miss the first four games of the season due to a league suspension for an alcohol-related violation the league's substance-abuse policy.
Insight: Prater was in danger of a one-year suspension but apparently has a good lawyer. In the Denver offense any kicker will see a lot of work and Prater's four-week replacement should have solid fantasy value for the first month. He'll be eligible to return Week 6 against the New York Jets as the Broncos have a bye in Week 4.
Description: Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith went 14-of-24 for 140 yards and two interceptions in the Chiefs' third preseason game against the Vikings on Saturday.
Insight: Smith has not looked good this preseason and lacks the weapons on offense (besides Jamaal Charles) to put any confidence in fantasy owners. The quarterback is 31-for-51 for 286 yards and three turnovers this month.
Description: Falcons receiver Roddy White caught three passes for 34 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Titans.
Insight: White looks to be the underneath, possession receiver this year with Julio Jones clearly taking the big play wide receiver role. But if White can actually stay healthy this season, he could see a lot more targets with Tony Gonzalez retiring. He is a value pick in the fourth or fifth round.
Description: Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III completed 5-of-8 passes for 20 yards and an interception in Washington's third preseason game against Baltimore. Griffin also took three sacks.
Insight: On his interception, he tried to force a pass into Alfred Morris but linebacker C.J. Mosley intercepted the pass. Griffin nearly threw another pick. There are definite concerns about whether Griffin can manage Jay Gruden's offense and make more throws in the pocket. Even with all his talent, more weapons around him this season (DeSean Jackson and Andre Roberts) and a pass heavy offense, Griffin is a risky seventh round pick, which is his current ADP.
Description: Colts running back Trent Richardson ran the ball for 14 yards on four carries.
Insight: After struggling in the first two preseason games, Richardson seemed to run with a purpose on Saturday. He ran for five and eight yards on his first two carries, but then ran for one yard in his next two carries combined. He is still a risky pick in the fifth round, which is his ADP.
Tell me if you have heard that before. Through the first two preseason games he's carried the ball 14 times for 34 yards. That's a 2.43 ypc average. Remind me why you would want him on your fantasy roster.
Description: Falcons receiver Julio Jones caught two passes including a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game against the Titans.
Insight: Matt Ryan found Jones for a 52-yard TD pass in the second quarter. Seeing as how well Ryan looked on Saturday and due to the fact the Falcons look poised to be in a lot of high scoring games, Jones definitely has potential to return to those 2012 numbers in which he caught 79 balls for 1,198 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Description: Dolphins receiver Mike Wallace caught six balls for 67 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Cowboys.
Insight: That's a good sign for Wallace, who was dealing with a hamstring injury. It is also a good sign Wallace received a team-high eight targets. But until Tannehill can hit Wallace on the deep ball, the QB missed his receiver by a good five yards on a long pass, Wallace remains a quality WR2 or flex start.
Wallace has been dealing with a minor hamstring injury and the Dolphins held him out as a precaution. Hopefully he can get back on the field for Miami's second preseason game so he can work on his chemistry with QB Ryan Tannehill. If Wallace stays healthy he should have a much better season than he did in 2013 (73 catches, 930 yards, five touchdowns) with creative new OC Bill Lazor calling the shots.
Description: Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco was 16-of-23 for 180 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game against the Redskins.
Insight: Flacco led Baltimore to three first-half scoring drives and struck a wide open Steve Smith for a 30-yard touchdown. The quarterback is 29-of-45 for 345 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions this preseason. Flacco is a worthy QB2.
Description: Titans running back Shonn Greene ran the ball six times for 15 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Falcons.
Insight: Given the size of the Tennessee offensive line and a below average Atlanta front seven, its disappointing Greene did not have a much better showing. He remains the starter for now, but we doubt he will remain in front of rookie Bishop Sankey.
Description: Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno ran for 64 yards on 10 carries in Saturday's preseason game against the Cowboys.
Insight: The running back scampered 19 yards on his first carry as a Dolphin and continued to run strong. Lamar Miller started the game, but the two running backs pretty much split time with the first team offense. Moreno provides great value with his ADP in the 10th round.
Description: Colts receiver Reggie Wayne started in Saturday's preseason game but failed to catch his lone target.
Insight: Wayne still looked good in his first game action since tearing his ACL in Week 7 last year. Wayne caught two passes that were negated for penalties. There is a good chance he leads Indianapolis in catches this season and is a quality flex play in most leagues.
Description: Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill completed 13-of-21 passes for 119 yards and an interception in Saturday's preseason game against the Cowboys.
Insight: Miami's offense gained 232 yards with Tannehill under center against Dallas, but it yielded only three points due to turnovers and penalties. Tannehill's worst throw was his last when he stared down Brian Hartline and threw it right to cornerback Tyler Patmon. The quarterback also missed an open Mike Wallace on a deep pass by a good five yards. However, Tannehill is still a good QB2 option as he has gone 29-for-41 for 291 yards, one touchdown and an interception this preseason.
Description: Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan completed 18-of-23 passes for 224 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Saturday's preseason game against the Titans.
Insight: Ryan looks poised to return to his 2012 numbers (4,515 yards/32 touchdowns) with his preseason performances so far. He is 28-for-37 for 314 yards, two touchdowns and no picks this month. With a poor defense and a shaky ground attack, Atlanta could be in a lot of shootouts and Ryan will be throwing a lot this season.
Description: In his preseason debut, Saints quarterback Drew Brees completed 9-of-15 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns in one quarter against the Colts on Saturday.
Insight: Brees looks completely healthy and ready to wreak havoc on the NFL this season. He found Jimmy Graham for a 38-yard touchdown and then Marques Colston for a 13-yard score. With the elite weapons he has again on offense, Brees could lead fantasy quarterbacks in scoring this season.
Description: Titans quarterback Jake Locker was 12-of-17 for 188 yards and one touchdown in Saturday's preseason game against the Falcons.
Insight: Locker also did not throw any interceptions. The touchdown pass was a 63-yard bomb to receiver Nate Washington. Through three preseason games, Locker is 21-of-30 with two touchdowns and no picks. If he remains healthy, Locker is a quality QB2.
Description: Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo went 10-for-18 with 87 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Dolphins.
Insight: Dallas only gained 110 yards in the first half with Romo under center. Most importantly, Romo seemed unaffected by three first half sacks. The quarterback is 14-of-23 for 167 yards and one touchdown this preseason.
Description: Bills wide receiver Mike Williams made three catches for 46 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game against his former team, the Buccaneers.
Insight: Williams caught three out of four passes thrown in his direction, including a 14-yard touchdown. He will play opposite Sammy Watkins to start the season and has the potential to be a valuable WR plug-in during the bye weeks.
Description: Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray played three series in Saturday's preseason game against the Dolphins and rushed for 18 yards on six carries and made one catch for six yards.
Insight: The big question behind Murray is whether he can actually stay on the field this year. In his three year career, he has never played more than 14 games. Behind what should be a powerful Cowboy line this season, Murray could really shine.
Description: Rams quarterback Sam Bradford left Saturday's preseason game against the Browns with a left knee injury.
Insight: It is the same knee Bradford had surgically repaired last fall. He went into the locker room under his own power for a short examination, and it didn't look serious but the injury history has to worry Bradford owners. The quarterback was 4-for-9 for 77 yards before the injury.
Description: Ravens backup running back Bernard Pierce left in the first quarter of Saturday's preseason game against the Redskins with a possble concussion.
Insight: Not a good sign for Pierce, who was injury plagued last season. Baltimore is already missing Ray Rice the first two weeks of the season because of suspension and now it seems like at least a 50/50 chance Pierce will be out too. Week 1 is two weeks away and doctors must clear Pierce before he returns.
Description: Buffalo QB EJ Manuel completed 19-of-28 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown and an interception in Saturday's preseason game against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Manuel probably didn't play quite as well as his stat line indicates. Even though the interception wasn't his fault because intented target, Scott Chandler, fell down, Manuel threw a couple other near interceptions by throwing into double coverage. He also lost a fumble on a sack that the Tampa Bay defense returned for a touchdown. Buffalo gained only 82 yards in the first half. A lot of Manuel's production came against the second string Tampa Bay defense in the third quarter.
Description: Buccaneers wide receiver Vincent Jackson caught five passes for 43 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Bills.
Insight: Jackson was clearly Josh McCown's favorite target, and the quarterback looked a lot better on Saturday then he did in previous preseason games this month. Jackson caught all five balls thrown his way. The receiver is a high-end WR2.
Description: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton suffered a back bruise late in the second quarter against the New England Patriots on Friday. Newton underwent X-rays as a precaution according to ESPN, and head coach Ron Rivera said they came back negative.
Insight: The bruise happened when Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins nailed Newton in the back after the quarterback scrambled seven yards. Newton entered the game with questions about his ankle due to offseason surgery. Rivera expects both Newton's back and ankle to be fine by Week 1.
Description: Tampa Bay quarterback Josh McCown completed 13-of-16 passes for 112 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the Buccaneers third preseason game.
Insight: McCown led the Bucs to three scoring drives before Mike Glennon replaced McCown in the second half. His touchdown was a 26-yard strike to Mike Evans in the back of the endzone. McCown has completed 20-of-27 passes for 178 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in three preseason starts. McCown is a low-end QB2.
was 2-for-4 for 20 yards and a "pick-six." He didn't get much help from his offensive line. They will all have to be much better or fantasy owners will start to devalue everyone on the Bucs' offense.
Description: Buccaneers running back Doug Martin had 12 carries for 38 yards with a touchdown and two catches for 27 yards in Saturday's preseason game.
Insight: Head coach Lovie Smith said this week that Martin was going to be his "bell cow" and he was on Saturday. Martin touched the ball 14 times before half and Bobby Rainey was mostly used only on third downs. Through three preseason games, Martin has 100 total yards on 25 touches. He is a lock to be the every-down back. If Martin is there in the third round, which is his currect ADP, take him.
Description: Giants head coach Tom Coughlin praised third-year wideout Rueben Randle during his Saturday press conference.
Insight: Randle looked good on Friday against the Jets, running a sharp 15-yard route for a touchdown and displaying great field awareness by catching a 26-yard throw along the sideline. If Eli Manning can ever get a hold of the new offense, Randle could be a great value pickup in a middle round.
Description: Raiders running back Maurice Jones-Drew broke off a 40-yard touchdown during Friday's preseason game at Green Bay.
Insight: Jones-Drew rushed for 3.4 yards per carry with the Jaguars last season, but he did still have five gains of at least 20 yards and two of 40 or more. With Darren McFadden's health always in question, MJD could turn into an RB2 this season.
Description: The Jaguars have officially named Chad Henne their starting quarterback.
Insight: It was a foregone conclusion that Henne would start. The question is, how long will he hold off Blake Bortles? The team wants to give Bortles the year to learn as a backup, but he figures to start at some point. He's outplayed Henne this preseason.
Description: The Jets named Geno Smith the starting quarterback following the team's third preseason game Friday night against the Giants.
Insight: Smith has gone 23-of-33 (.697) for 268 yards, a touchdown and an interception this preseason and he was 9-of-14 for 137 yards and a touchdown Friday night. Smith's grasp on the starting job was never in jeopardy, especially because Michael Vick showed up to camp with a backup's mindset. Smith isn't a reliable fantasy option but his development is important to the fantasy value of Eric Decker.
Description: NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports there will be no ruling on Josh Gordon's suspension appeal this week.
Insight: FOX Sports' Mike Garofolo reported the NFL Players Union was expecting a decision by the end of this week, so this is a little surprising. Apparently there is a high volume of testimony on both sides from Gordon's latest failed drug test. In many cases, fantasy owners hoping to know Gordon's status before their draft are unfortunately out of luck. Hopefully, a decision is made next week.
Description: The NFL has issued a four-game suspension to Chiefs RT Donald Stephenson.
Insight: More troubling news for the Kansas City offensive line. Be concerned and forewarned if you are planning to choose Jamaal Charles as your top pick. The Chiefs offensive line is going to struggle in 2014.
Description: Coach Lovie Smith called running back Doug Martin his "bell cow".
Insight: It is a little curious why Martin's ADP has slipped to the early third round as Martin is going to be the focal point of a run heavy offense. There are still questions about the Buccaneers offensive line but Martin provides tremendous value at where his ADP is right now.
Description: Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell played into the fourth quarter, gaining 23 yards on nine carries.
Insight: Bell, along with the entire Pittsburgh offense, laid a stinker in Philadelphia. Playing into the fourth quarter appeared to be Bell's punishment for his DUI and marijuana arrest. He will more than likely not miss a game this season due to a suspension, and is thus still the clear No. 1 guy in the Pittsburgh backfield and a quality second or third round pick on draft day.
Description: Eagles fans and a lot of fantasy owners were sweating when running back LeSean McCoy left Thursday's game with a thumb injury, but X-rays were negative.
Insight: Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane says there are no fractures or torn ligaments. This an example of why its best to draft just before the season begins. Now that he appears fine and has two weeks to heal, he should still be a high first-round selection.
Description: Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno (knee) is expected to suit up for Saturday's preseason game against Dallas according to the Miami Herald.
Insight: It will be Moreno's debut with the Dolphins and last chance to earn the No. 1 RB spot before Week 1. More than likely, he will be a change-of-pace back and pass protector while Lamar Miller gets most of the first and second down carries.
Description: Newly-acquired running back Kenjon Barner could mean trouble for Eagles backup Chris Polk.
Insight: Polk has been sidelined by a torn hamstring. He ran well when given a chance last year (11 carries for 98 yards and 3 TDs), but his roster spot could be up for grabs with Chip Kelly having brought in Barner, who played for Kelly at Oregon.
Description: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount "probably face no more than a one-game suspension and that won't come anytime soon." Ross Township Police in Pittsburgh arrested Bell and Blount for marijuana possession on Wednesday.
Insight: Police also charged Bell with DUI, according to Colin Dunlap of CBS Sports. The NFL, however, typically waits for the legal process to play out until handing out their own suspensions. For instance, Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe had marijuana in his car last Novemeber and is not serving his one game suspension until Week 1 this year. The only question remains is whether the Steelers suspend Bell one game like they did to Santonio Holmes back in 2008 for the same offense. Since Bell's crime happened during preseason, he may only sit out the third preseason game rather than a regular season game.
Description: The Tennessean called Titans receiver Justin Hunter "all but unstoppable" anywhere near the goal line. Hunter caught four balls for 111 yards and two touchdowns in last week's preseason game.
Insight: Hunter has a knack for catching the ball in the corner of the end zone on the fade pattern according to The Tennessean. Adding to his ball skills, Hunter is 6'4" and jumped a remarkable 39.5 inch vertical leap in the NFL Combine. He could prove to be one of Jake Locker's favorite red zone targets this season and thus a sleeper on draft day.
Description: Saints running back Pierre Thomas will have a different role this season according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson are both ahead of Thomas on the depth chart, but Thomas expects to be more involved in the passing game.
Insight: Darren Sproles and Lance Moore are both gone, so hypothetically, Thomas could see more passes come his way along with possibly being the third down back. But the soon to be 30-year-old already caught 77 passes and carried the ball 147 times in 2013. Will his touches really go up when he averaged a career-low 6.7 yards per catch and 3.7 yards per carry last year? Doubt it.
Description: Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno (knee) says he's ready for game action and hopes to play in Saturday's preseason game against Dallas, according to the Miami Herald.
Insight: Moreno underwent a left knee scope in June and returned to practice a couple weeks ago. On Wednesday, he had his most impressive day of practice since returning. Moreno is likely going to end up in a timeshare with Lamar Miller.
Description: Texans receiver Andre Johnson (hamstring) has shown no signs of rust so far, according to cbssports.com.
Insight: Johnson sat out OTAs and minicamp because he wanted to be traded and he missed the early portion of training camp with a hamstring injury. We have confidence in his ability to build a rapport with new QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and learn Bill O'Brien's offensive scheme quickly. He had 109 catches, 1,407 yards and five touchdowns on 181 targets last season despite having to catch passes from Matt Schaub and Case Keenum.
Description: Atlanta coach Mike Smith fully expects running back Steven Jackson (left hamstring) to be ready for Week 1, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter.
Insight: Even if that's true, the injury is a reminder that Jackson isn't getting any younger. The 31-year-old missed four games with a strained right hamstring last year and rushed for just 3.5 ypc. Rookie Devonta Freeman has a good chance to start at some point this season.
Description: The Browns have named Brian Hoyer the starting quarterback for Week 1, according to clevelandbrowns.com. "He was the clear leader from the beginning," coach Mike Pettine said. "We've maintained all along that if it was close, I would prefer to go with the more experienced player. Brian has done a great job in the meeting rooms and with his teammates on the practice field and in the locker room."
Insight: Hoyer started three games last season but tore his ACL early in the third one. In the two games in which Hoyer played heavily, tight end Jordan Cameron had 16 catches for 157 yards and four touchdowns on 23 targets. If Hoyer doesn't get off to a good start in the Browns' first three games (at Pittsburgh, vs. New Orleans, vs. Baltimore), we could see the team make the switch to Johnny Manziel during the Week 4 bye.
Description: Steelers running backs Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount were arrested for marijuana possession on Wednesday and Bell was also charged with DUI, according to Colin Dunlap of CBS.
Insight: Bell and Blount may face suspensions once the case is resolved, which won't be for a while. Bell will be Pittsburgh's workhorse this season, but he said over the weekend that Blount will probably get the goal-line carries.
Description: Bengals rookie running back Jeremy Hill (shoulder) returned to practice Tuesday.
Insight: He left Saturday's preseason game with a shoulder injury. Hill is expected to fill the BenJarvus Green-Ellis role this season, but Giovani Bernard is going to see a bump in touches and could also get goal-line carries so Hill's value will be limited to the flex spot.
Description: Saints running back Mark Ingram is hoping to be more involved in the passing game this season, according to ESPN.com. "I hope so. I want to do everything. I want to be involved in the pass game, run game, picking up pass (protection). I want to be the most versatile player I can be," Ingram said. "The majority of the time, if you just watch the film, most of the teams think when I'm in the game it's either gonna be a run or play-action or something like that. ... I know I'm an all-purpose back, a complete back. I can do everything."
Insight: Darren Sproles, who caught 71 passes on 89 targets last season, was traded to the Eagles this offseason. Ingram has caught 24 passes in 37 career NFL games, but he had a receiving touchdown in Friday's preseason game and caught two passes during a two-minute drill simulation Monday. The Saints are expected to mix Ingram, Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson this season, so all three will have limited fantasy value.
Description: Giants rookie receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) will not play in the team's fourth preseason game against the Jets and beat reporter Jordan Raanan says it is "not looking good" for Week 1.
Insight: Beckham has been hampered by a hamstring injury since the spring and he re-injured it during Monday's practice. Jerrel Jernigan hasn't impressed coach Tom Coughlin yet despite getting most of the reps that would have went to Beckham. With no viable tight end to speak of look for Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle and Rashad Jennings to be heavily targeted early in the season.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins (ribs) returned to practice Tuesday, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com.
Insight: Watkins suffered bruised ribs in the last preseason game. He was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel.
Description: Falcons receiver Julio Jones (foot) is set to return to a normal practice routine, according to ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure.
Insight: Jones has been practicing every other day as he works his way back from foot surgery. He had 41 catches for 580 yards and two touchdowns in five games last season and has No. 1 overall fantasy upside at his position if he can stay healthy.
Description: Former Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel is in Arizona to take a physical for the Cardinals.
Insight: The Cardinals are looking to find a replacement for Darnell Dockett after his season-ending knee injury. Keisel has played in a 3-4 defense and at 35-years-old may have something left in the tank.
Description: The Cardinals confirmed that Darnell Dockett has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee and will miss the entire 2014 season, according to Bob McManaman, azcentral sports.
Insight: Arizona's defense ranked sixth in yards allowed and seventh in points allowed last season, but top linebacker Daryl Washington is suspended for the entire 2014 season for substance abuse, safety Tyrann Mathieu is coming back from a torn ACL and now Dockett is done for the year. Be careful not to overvalue them on draft day.
Description: The Falcons have brought in Pat McQuistan, formerly of Dallas, Miami, New Orleans, and Arizona.
Insight: The team is in need of offensive line help due to the season-ending injury to Sam Baker (torn patellar tendon). The Falcons need to protect Matt Ryan better than last season (career high 44 sacks in 2013).
Description: Broncos running back Montee Ball (appendectomy) returned to practice Tuesday.
Insight: The Broncos had a non-contact practice on Tuesday, so it was just individual drills. It is still a step in the right direction for Ball. The running back should still be ready for Week 1, but don't plan on seeomg how he looks in the third preseason game.
Description: Rams third-year receiver Brian Quick appears to be ready to make a leap forward in production and fantasy value.
Insight: There is a well-known theory that many wide receivers breakout in their third season and that could happen for Quick. The 33rd selection of the 2012 draft class has done little to this point, but signs of him "getting it" have begun to show. Also as important, we saw quarterback Sam Bradford trust him Saturday despite being covered in a 41-yard catch and run. It may be Quick's time to shine and fantasy owners should use a late-round pick on him because of his upside.
Description: Saints receiver Brandin Cooks missed Monday's practice but fantasy owners have no need to worry.
Insight: Cooks is dealing with a stomach virus and fever - no injury. We're looking for solid production from Cooks in his rookie season. He's got a great QB under center and 143 available targets with Lance Moore and Darren Sproles gone.
Description: Packers tight end Brandon Bostick will miss a "couple of weeks" according to coach Mike McCarthy.
Insight: Bostick is probably the best receiver of the group, but with him on the sidelines the team will likely go with Richard Rodgers and Andrew Quarless. We don't see much fantasy value for any of the three and they should be avoided on draft day. Even when Jermichael Finley was in Titletown the position was largely ignored.
Description: Jets starting corner Dimitri Patterson (calf/ankle/quadriceps) joined Dee Milliner on the sidelines for Saturday's preseason game, but expects to be ready for the season opener versus Oakland.
Insight: It would be extremely tough for the Jets defense if they were missing both their starting cornerbacks ... although maybe not against the Raiders. They had better be ready by Week 2 in Green Bay or Aaron Rodgers & Co. will have a field day.
Description: Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara, who left Saturday's preseason game with a groin injury and is probable for the opener against Detroit.
Insight: Amukamura started all 16 games last season and said he planned to be ready for Week 1. Given the Lions passing game, the Giants need him out there to help keep Calvin Johnson & Co. under control.
Description: Giants rookie receiver Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) left Monday's practice and did not return after appearing to pull up lame, according to a New York Daily News report.
Insight: Beckham may have been held out for the rest of the day as a precaution, but its worth watching the next few days. He's missed valuable practice time which could limit his early season productivity.
Description: Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III completed 6-of-9 passes for 112 yards and one interception against Cleveland on Monday night. He also rushed for 24 yards on four carries.
Insight: Griffin's best throw was a deep ball to Andre Roberts, which gained 49 yards. He had a bad interception when the Redskins were driving in the first quarter. On the play, pass rushers flushed Griffin from the pocket, and he failed to set his feet. The quarterback often improvised when pressured and even though head coach Jay Gruden did not draw up any designed runs for his quarterback, Griffin still had four carries. Fantasy owners should be excited about Griffin's upside but still concerned with the amount of hits Griffin is taking when carrying the ball. The Washington Post reports Griffin suffered a minor thigh bruise on Monday night.
Description: Browns quarterbacks Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer rotated every two series for the first half and neither played well. Manziel complete 7-of-16 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. Hoyer was 2-for-6 with 16 yards. Manziel's touchdown came in the second half against Washington backups.
According to Bob Holtzman of ESPN, a Browns team source says Johnny Manziel is now ahead of Brian Hoyer in the competition for the starting quarterback job.
Insight: The quarterback situation in Cleveland is extremely cloudy as the pair combined to go 4-of-13 through the air in the first half. Both quarterbacks skipped passes in the dirt and threw behind receivers. Hoyer missed an easy touchdown throw to Andrew Hawkins midway through the second quarter. Head coach Mike Pettine wanted to name his starter this week, but he may have to wait until after the third preseason game. Fantasy owners should too before drafting these quarterbacks.
Description: According to foxsports.com, the Cardinals believe that Darnell Dockett suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during Monday's practice.
Insight: Arizona's defense ranked sixth in yards allowed and seventh in points allowed last season, but top linebacker Daryl Washington is suspended for the entire 2014 season for substance abuse, safety Tyrann Mathieu is coming back from a torn ACL and now Dockett could be done for the year.
Description: Dolphins tight end Charles Clay (knee) returned to practice Monday, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.
Insight: Clay missed the first two preseason games with a knee injury. The 25-year-old had 69 catches for 759 yards and six touchdowns and also carried seven times for 15 yards and a touchdown last season. He ranked seventh among tight ends in fantasy points.
Description: Bears receiver Marquess Wilson (collarbone) is likely to be sidelined until at least midseason, according to USA Today.
Insight: Wilson's collarbone broke in two places and he was given a 12-14 week timetable after his Aug. 5 surgery. He was expected to serve as Chicago's No. 3 receiver this season, but newly signed Santonio Holmes may have to fill that role. Wilson's absence will lead to more targets for tight end Martellus Bennett.
Description: Titans running back Shonn Greene (knee) practiced Monday, according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. He hyperextended his right knee, which he had arthroscopic surgery on twice in the last 12 months, in Friday's preseason game.
Insight: Greene is currently atop Tennessee's depth chart, but with Dexter McCluster playing on third downs and rookie Bishop Sankey in the fold, this could be a committee early in the season.
Description: Eagles running back LeSean McCoy missed practice Sunday with what he called "a small version of turf toe," but he practiced Monday, according to csnphilly.com
Insight: McCoy said he hurt the big toe on his left foot during a joint practice against the Patriots last week. He said he had an MRI and X-rays and is "fine." It shouldn't be a problem for McCoy, last year's leader in yards from scrimmage with 2,146, come Week 1.
Description: Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is dealing with a bruised foot, according to ESPN.com. He suffered the injury while moving out of the players' dorm at Missouri Western State University.
Insight: "He came down a grassy slope there and just kind of rolled his foot over on the curb," coach Andy Reid said. "We're optimistic about it. Initially there was some concern. He had all the stuff done on it, the X-rays, the MRIs and all that done on it. Everything is clear." Charles sat out the second preseason game and he may miss the third as well, but he should be fine for Week 1.
Description: Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel will start Minnesota's third preseason game against Kansas City on Saturday according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
Insight: That means Cassel will have started all three preseason games so far. Rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater played well in the second preseason game, completing 16 of 20 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, but the third starting nod for Cassel would indicate he is clearly ahead in the competition. Cassel is 17-for-22 with 239 yards and a touchdown this preseason.
Description: USA Today reports that Bears third wide receiver Marquess Wilson will be sidelined at least 12 to 14 weeks with his broken collarbone, which gives veteran receiver Santonio Holmes a chance to be more than just an injury replacement for a couple weeks. Chicago signed Holmes on Saturday.
The Chicago Bears have signed receiver Santonio Holmes.
Insight: Holmes will still compete with fellow receivers Josh Morgan and Eric Weems for the Bears' No. 3 wide out job. If the 30-year-old has anything left in the tank, Holmes should run away with the job. Holmes struggled to stay on the field the last two seasons in New York, playing just 15 games and catching 43 balls for 728 yards with two touchdowns.
Description: Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski participated in 11-on-11 drills for the first time in training camp on Monday according to NESN's Doug Kyed.
Insight: Gronkowski is returning from a torn ACL and MCL he injuried last year against Cleveland in Week 14. A week ago, ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio reported the All-Pro tight end had a 50/50 chance to start Week 1. Gronkowski being cleared to perform 11-on-11 drills is obviously a good sign for the tight end, Tom Brady owners and any owner with other Patriots offensive players for that matter. Still proceed with caution though as Gronkowski has not played a full season since 2011.
Description: Ravens running back Ray Rice (shoulder) was back at practice Monday.
Insight: Rice's X-rays came back negative and he had told Brent Harris of Comcast Sportsnet that he's "fine." This is confirmation. Rice is suspended the first two games of the year, so even if he was injured, he would have plenty of time to recover.
Description: Jacksonville receiver Cecil Shorts returned to practice Sunday after missing three weeks with a hamstring injury.
Insight: According to Hays Carlyon of the Florida Times-Union, he used the word "rusty" four times in describing his play. He expects to be ready for Week 1 versus Philadelphia. Shorts (66 receptions for 777 yards and 3 TDs in 13 games last season) will be the Jaguars No. 1 receiver if he can stay healthy.
Description: Packers rookie Richard Rodgers is challenging Andrew Quarless for the starting tight end spot.
Insight: It was Rodgers who was on the field for the first drive of the game and stayed out there as the team went no-huddle all the way for the score. Even if Rodgers wins the job, he doesn't appear to be a fantasy-worthy tight end, as he's doing more blocking than catching.
Description: Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles didn't play Sunday night and may not play next week either.
Insight: It's just the Chiefs being very protective of their best (read only) offensive weapon. Charles rushed for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns on 259 carries and added 70 receptions for 693 yards and seven scores in 15 games last season. He is the total package for fantasy owners and is a option for the No. 1 overall pick.
Description: Broncos running back Montee Ball (appendectomy) is hoping the doctors will give his clearance to return to practice Monday, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post.
Insight: He's still expected to be ready for Week 1 and it's obviously not a long-term injury concern. Much is expected of Ball, who will take over for Knowshon Moreno in the Peyton Manning-led Denver offense. Manning's backs have always had a good production history due to defenses fearing the quarterback's passing ability.
Description: Titans rookie running back Bishop Sankey did some good things and some bad things this week ... as rookies are prone to do.
Insight: Sankey rushed six times for 31 yards (5.1 ypc), but also fumbled on his final carry while driving for extra yards. With Shonn Greene struggling to to knee issues, Sankey could be in line for big playing time, if he can straighten out the issues - primarily blocking for his QB and fumbling.
Description: Cardinals starting inside linebacker Kevin Minter has been dealing with a pectoral injury and may miss the remainder of the preseason, according to Mike Jurecki of 910 AM in Phoenix.
Insight: The Cardinals defense was very good last season, but they lost both starting inside linebackers (Daryl Washington to suspension, Karlos Dansby to free agency) in the offseason. Whether the remaining group can play at previously high levels in questionable.
Description: Travis Kelce caught all four balls thrown in his direction for 63 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown against the Panthers on Sunday night.
Insight: Kelce has caught six of the seven passes thrown in his direction for 136 yards and two touchdowns during two preseason games. ESPN Chiefs reporter Adam Teicher said a week ago that Kelce is unlikely to replace TE Anthony Fasano in the starting lineup, but Teicher also said he wouldn't be surprised if Kelce caught more passes than his fellow tight end. With the lack of depth at receiver for Kansas City, Kelce will likely get his chances.
Description: Running back Jonathan Stewart only carried the ball four times in Carolina's second preseason game against Kansas City, but rushed for 26 yards and scored two goal line touchdowns.
Insight: Stewart's value has diminished significantly with injuries the past two seasons. The 27-year-old has rushed for one touchdown in 15 games the last two seasons, but when healthy, he can still be productive splitting carries with DeAngelo Williams. It is also a good sign Stewart is getting involved in goal line packages.
Description: Kansas City wideout Junior Hemingway left Sunday night's preseason game with a hip injury.
Insight: We don't as yet know how serious it might be. Heminway has been used as the No. 3 receiver and the Chiefs aren't very deep at the position. He had 13 receptions for 125 yards and two scores last season.
Description: Saints quarterback Drew Brees (oblique) is back at practice, according to Larry Holder of The Times-Picayune.
Insight: Brees missed some time due to the injury, but was never in danger of missing the season opener. Friday. TSN's projection have Brees throwing for 5,284 yards, 40 TDs and 13 interceptions. Only Peyton Manning can rival those numbers.
Description: After going 10-for-13 in his preseason debut, Broncos QB Peyton Manning was 12-for-14 for 102 yards and a score against the San Francisco 49ers.
Insight: Ho-hum. The 38-year-old set several NFL records last season including most yards (5,477) and most touchdown passes (55) in a single season and we expect more of the same in 2014. The five-time MVP will be the first quarterback off the board in fantasy drafts.
Description: Eagles DB Cary Williams was injured (hamstring) on his 77-yard interception return in the first half of Friday night's game.
Insight: Williams should be ready for the start of the regular season, but don't expect him next Thursday against Pittsburgh. The Eagles have given up 625 net passing yards in two preseason games and can ill-afford any injuries in the defensive backfield.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Saturday's preseason game with a rib injury, called a bruise by the Buffalo News.
Insight: That's a lot better than broken, but figure the rookie receiver to sit out for a while. Watkins was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel.
Description: Jets running back Chris Johnson looked healthy and ran well in the second preseason game.
Insight: Chris Johnson will probably lead the backfield in touches, but Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell will remain involved. We're still waiting to see CJ2K get involved in the passing game (four receptions in two games) because we know he has the ability to take screen passes a long way.
Description: Colts running back Trent Richardson rushed for 21 yards on nine carries in the Colts second preseason game.
Insight: Tell me if you have heard that before. Through the first two preseason games he's carried the ball 14 times for 34 yards. That's a 2.43 ypc average. Remind me why you would want him on your fantasy roster.
Description: Hakeem Nicks caught five balls for 53 yards Saturday night, his best performance of the preseason, by far.
Insight: Nicks is working as the No. 3 receiver behind returning veteran Reggie Wayne and budding star T.Y. Hilton. It's hard to predict how much fantasy value Nicks can produce, but he certainly looked healthy. Nicks hasn't been a WR1 since 2011 and doesn't figure to get back to that status in Indy.
Description: Buffalo running back Fred Jackson had another busy game, rushing six times for 27 yards and catching seven balls for 28 yards.
Insight: C.J. Spiller had six touches. The 33-year-old Jackson is a solid all-around runner and pass receiver and he gets the goal-line opportunites which limits Spillers' fantasy value and keeps Jackson as a viable fantasy option.
Description: Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger was efficient in his time on the field in the Steelers second preseason game, throwing for 128 yards and two scores.
Insight: Big Ben hit Antonio Brown for a 76-yard touchdown pass that should have caught fantasy owners attention. He also hit young Markus Wheaton on a 16-yard strike. Don't underestimate Roethlisberger's fantasy value.
Description: Tampa Bay rookie receiver Mike Evans caught two balls for 52 yards, though he lost a touchdown when the ball was stripped out of his hands by Brent Grimes.
Insight: We hope the No. 6 pick of the 2014 NFL Draft learns how to hold the ball when the games begin to count. Evans doesn't have any real competition for the spot opposite Vincent Jackson and should be a solid WR3 and one of the top-two rookie receivers this season.
Description: Houston running back Jonathan Grimes put forth a solid argument for his being the No. 2 back with 42 yards rushing on nine carries, three catches for 25 yards and a special teams touchdown.
Insight: The winner of the battle for a backup spot to Arian Foster is a "must-handcuff" as Foster, who is already dealing with a hamstring injury, has missed 11 games over the past three years.
Description: Vikings rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater showed off some of his considerable talent late Saturday night, throwing for 177 yards and two touchdowns.
Insight: Bridgewater was 16-for-20 with no interceptions in leading Minnesota to a comeback victory over the Arizona Cardinals. A healthy Matt Cassel will still be the opening day starter, but this performance keeps alive hopes Bridgewater will eventually grab the starting role.
Description: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has indicated that LeGarrette Blount is thought of as a red zone and goal-line back.
Insight: After Saturday night's preseason game Le'Veon Bell said Blount would get the goal line work. It seems pretty obvious that everyone is in agreement on this fact. Reduce Bell's fantasy value accordingly and raise Blount a bit.
Description: Bengals rookie running back Jeremy Hill left Saturday's preseason game with a right shoulder injury, but tweeted "I'm fine" late Saturday night.
Insight: Hill is expected to fill the BenJarvus Green-Ellis role this season, but Giovani Bernard is going to see a bump in touches and could also get goal-line carries so Hill's value will be limited to the flex spot.
Description: Buffalo rookie receiver Sammy Watkins left Saturday's preseason game with a rib injury, but Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that he is fine.
Insight: Watkins was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft so he comes with large expectations, but he's tied to inconsistent and inaccurate QB E.J. Manuel. He's a high-upside WR3 who comes with a seventh-round ADP.
Description: Bengals rookie running back Jeremy Hill left Saturday's preseason game with a right shoulder injury, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com.
Insight: BenJarvus Green-Ellis saw 220 carries and rushed for seven touchdowns as the Bengals' power back last year, but he gained just 3.4 ypc. Hill is expected to fill that role this season, but Giovani Bernard is going to see a bump in touches and could also get goal-line carries so Hill's value will be limited to the flex spot.
Description: Ravens running back Ray Rice went to the locker room to get his shoulder looked at during Saturday's preseason game.
Insight: Rice's X-rays came back negative and he told Brent Harris of Comcast Sportsnet that he's "fine." Rice is suspended the first two games of the year, which will give Bernard Pierce a chance to prove he deserves a larger role when Rice returns.
Description: Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo started Saturday's preseason game and had four completions on five attempts for 80 yards and a touchdown.
Insight: Romo had back surgery in December, but he looked plenty healthy Saturday night. He completed three passes to Dez Bryant, including a 31-yard touchdown. With pass-happy offensive coordinator Scott Linehan in the fold, terrific weapons and a terrible defense, Romo is a steal at his current ninth-round ADP.
Description: The Rams believe Isaiah Pead tore his ACL during Saturday's preseason game, coach Jeff Fisher said. SOURCE: Mike Garafolo, FOX Sports
Insight: Pead, the 50th overall pick in the 2012 draft, has rushed for 75 yards on 17 carries in 25 NFL games. He would have been behind Zac Stacy, Benny Cunningham and Tre Mason on the depth chart if healthy.
Description: Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr suffered a concussion during Friday's preseason game, according to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Carr has completed 19-of-32 for 183 yards, a touchdown and an interception in two preseason games while Matt Schaub has gone 11-of-20 for 108 yards and a pick, but Schaub is still expected to begin the season as Oakland's starter.
Description: Eagles rookie receiver Jordan Matthews rebounded from a poor showing in the first preseason game (three drops) with nine catches for 104 yards on nine targets.
Insight: Coach Chip Kelly attributed Matthews' struggles in the opener to first-game jitters, and it appears he was right. With Jeremy Maclin, Riley Cooper and Josh Huff all banged up, Matthews is getting key reps with the first-team offense. He could have a larger role than expected early in the season and is a candidate to break out later in the year.
Description: The Chicago Bears have signed receiver Santonio Holmes.
Insight: The Bears needed receiver depth after losing Marquess Wilson to a broken collarbone. Holmes will compete with Josh Morgan for the third receiver job, though the player who wins will only be keeping the seat warm for Wilson.
Description: Titans receiver Justin Hunter had four catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns in Friday's preseason game.
Insight: Hunter made a lot of mental mistakes and appeared passive at times on the field during his rookie year, but his physical gifts are undeniable. He's 6-foot-4, 203 pounds and ran a 4.44 40-yard dash at the combine. He's a high-upside target in the 12th round of fantasy drafts.
Description: Patriots running back Stevan Ridley fumbled during Friday's preseason game and didn't play another snap, according to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com.
Insight: Uh oh. Ridley lost four fumbles last season and was on the bench frequently down the stretch. It's unclear if Ridley not playing after the fumble was planned or because Bill Belichick put him in the doghouse again. It's a shame because he rushed for 45 yards on nine carries (5.0 ypc) in the game. Rookie James White has a good shot to cut into Ridley's carries this season.
Description: Eagles rookie receiver Josh Huff left Friday's preseason game with a shoulder injury and won't return, according to Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Insight: Huff is Philadelphia's fourth receiver so this wouldn't be a big deal for fantasy purposes if everyone was healthy. But Jeremy Maclin (hamstring, knee) and Riley Cooper (foot) are both ailing and sat out Friday.
Description: Bears tight end Zach Miller may have suffered ligament damage in Thursday's preseason matchup with Jacksonville, according to an Ian Rapoport report. X-rays were negative, but he'll have an MRI on his foot.
Insight: Miller caught six catches for 62 yards and a touchdown last week with Martellus Bennett suspended, but this could leave him sidelined.
Description: Rams quarterback Sam Bradford (knee surgery) is expected to play at least one quarter Saturday versus Green Bay.
Insight: Bradford is attempting to come back from a torn ACL and this will be fantasy owners first chance to see if he is ready to play. Prior to the injury, Bradford had 1,687 yards, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions in seven games. A healthy Bradford certainly helps the fantasy value of his receivers.
Description: Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has been suspended for one game, the regular-season opener against Tennessee, for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.
Insight: Fantasy owners should slightly discount his fantasy value due to missing this game. The soon-to-be 30-year-old Bowe had trouble getting separation last season and finished with a career-low 673 yards on 57 catches (11.8 ypc) and five touchdowns.
Description: Jaguars rookie quarterback Blake Bortles, the No. 3 overall selection, had another solid outing against the Bears Thursday night, going 11-for-17 for 160 yards.
Insight: Bortles has been good enough that the team will give him one quarter with the starters next week, according to coach Gus Bradley. The rookie is locked into the backup role, at least at the start of the season. Check back after they start the season against Philadelphia, Washington, Indianapolis and San Diego. He's certain worth drafting in the late rounds.
Description: Jaguars running back Toby Gerhart ran six times for 19 yards and caught one ball for eight yards in his first preseason work.
Insight: Gerhart is guaranteed to get roughly 300 touches if he stays healthy and his 231-pound frame gives him a good chance to hold up to the pounding. He'll be fine between the tackles, but we are concerned about trying him on the outside. That could be where he losses carries to Jordan Todman or Storm Johnson.
Description: Bears first-round pick Kyle Fuller left Thursday night's game with an ankle injury.
Insight: It didn't appear to be too serious as he was seen walking around. He's the team's No. 3 corner and given they have to play Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford twice a year they need to stay healthy in the secondary.
Description: Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said running back Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount will "both get their share."
Insight: Concerning words for fantasy owners who want to select Bell early in the draft. Bell had excellent numbers after missing the first three games in 2013 (1,259 yards from scrimmage, 8 TDs) and fantasy owners want big production from him this season, but Blount could thwart the strategy.
Description: Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson won't play in Saturday's game against the Cardinals.
Insight: We told you he might not play at all this preseason, but don't worry he still knows how to run the football. Peterson followed up his MVP 2012 campaign with a still respectable though not up to expectation 1,266 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in 2013.
Description: The Packers backup quarterback spot, between Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien, is still up in the air, according to a Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel report.
Insight: Where have we heard this before, that Flynn could be losing his spot in training camp/preseason. Oh, that's right - Seattle and Oakland. The winner of the battle is the handcuff to Aaron Rodgers and could have value if called upon because of the team's top-quality receivers.
Description: Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin left Wednesday's practice with a hamstring injury.
Insight: Maclin missed all of 2013 with a torn ACL and has dealt with nagging injuries his entire career, but he's expected to serve as the No. 1 passing target in Chip Kelly's high-octane offense and has WR2 upside IF he can play 16 games. He's only done that once in five seasons.
Description: San Francisco wideout Michael Crabtree returned to practice Wednesday, according to Steve Corkran of the Bay Area News Group.
Insight: Crabtree missed roughly 10 days with hamstring soreness. The receiver is primed for a breakout after a torn Achilles ruined his 2013 season. He has low-end WR1 upside but is being selected in the fourth round of mock drafts.
Description: Patriots rookie running back James White got some first-team reps along with Shane Vereen during Wednesday's joint practice with the Eagles. SOURCE: csnne.com
Insight: Stevan Ridley got most of his reps with the second-team offense. White has reportedly had an impressive camp and could cut into Ridley's usage, especially if Ridley's fumbling issues resurface.
Description: According to Adam Teicher of ESPN.com, Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe hasn't had a great camp.
Insight: The soon-to-be 30-year-old Bowe had trouble getting separation last season and finished with a career-low 673 yards on 57 catches (11.8 ypc) and five touchdowns. He's someone we'd avoid in fantasy this season.
Description: According to the Associated Press, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will start Saturday's preseason game against the Ravens.
Insight: It will be Romo's first game since his back surgery in December. He sat out the preseason opener. With pass-happy former Lions OC Scott Linehan calling the plays, a healthy Romo will be a steal at his ninth-round ADP.
Description: According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers could "use a bevy of tight ends in more specified roles this season."
Insight: Rookie Richard Rodgers started the first preseason game, but Brandon Bostick is having a great camp and Andrew Quarless is the best blocker of the bunch. Whoever wins the starting job will likely split time and won't be more than the fifth option behind Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Jarrett Boykin and Eddie Lacy.
Description: Former Rams receiver Torry Holt says that Tavon Austin has been very quiet in training camp.
Insight: Austin was drafted eighth overall but played limited snaps and had 40 catches for 418 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games last season. He also rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown on nine carries and racked up 678 return yards (398 kick, 280 punt) on 51 attempts. Fantasy owners in 12-team leagues cannot rely on the 23-year-old as a WR3.
Description: The Arizona Republic says the the Cardinals "would like to get the ball to (Andre Ellington) 20 or so times a game, but want to limit his carries inside the tackles."
Insight: Ellington is 5-foot-9 and roughly 200 pounds, but Jamaal Charles isn't much bigger and he has held up to the pounding over the past two seasons. Ellington is ticketed for 4-6 catches and 13-15 rushes per game and he also has been getting first-team reps in the red zone. He could easily outperform his third-round ADP.
