NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Dallas
(Thursday, January 30th)
Final Score: New Jersey 3, Dallas 2 (OT)
Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Patrik Elias scored the game-winner on the power play just 40 seconds into overtime, as the New Jersey Devils edged the Dallas Stars, 3-2, on Thursday at American Airlines Center.
Dallas forward Tyler Seguin tied the game with 51.5 ticks left in regulation, but teammate Jamie Benn took a tripping minor 28 seconds into the extra session to put the Stars down a man.
With plenty of room to work on the 4-on-3 power play, Jaromir Jagr threw a low shot on net from atop the right circle that Kari Lehtonen padded away, but Elias, who drew the penalty on Benn, was there on the low left side to pound the puck home for the victory.
Travis Zajac and Dainius Zubrus each lit the lamp in regulation, while Cory Schneider stopped 14 shots to help the Devils snap a two-game slide.
"A little unlucky there at the end, but we persevered and it was a big two points," New Jersey head coach Peter DeBoer said of his team giving up the lead with under a minute left. "Both teams were playing for keeps."
Benn and Seguin recorded Dallas' markers, while Lehtonen allowed all three goals on 24 shots for the Stars, who wrapped up a five-game homestand at 3-1-1.
"It was a bit of a roller-coaster," Seguin said of the homestand. "We had some good moments, we had some tough moments. It's about finding consistency as a group right now."
Zajac tipped in a Damien Brunner blast with New Jersey on the power play 9:50 into the second to give the Devils a 2-0 lead, but the Stars scored the game's next two goals, starting with Benn's marker just 62 seconds later.
The Dallas captain corralled a loose puck on the low right side and whipped a backhander past a surprised Schneider to slice Dallas' deficit to 2-1 at 10:52.
The Stars struggled to put much together from there, but with under two minutes left in regulation, Benn was pulled down by Jagr. However, Benn was whistled for a dive and both players went to the box at 18:21 of the third period.
Lehtonen then left the net in favor of the extra attacker, giving the Stars a 5-on-4 that Seguin made the most of by swatting the puck past Schneider amid a wild scrum in front.
Benn and Jagr were both released from the box 21 seconds into overtime, but the former found himself back in the sin bin just seven seconds later, leading to Elias' game-winning goal.
After killing off an early 5-on-3, New Jersey jumped on top with 9:01 on the first-period clock when Zubrus rifled a one-timer from the right circle that snuck under Lehtonen's glove for a 1-0 lead.
The Devils entered the game mired in a scoreless streak of 103 minutes, 53 seconds ... Dallas dropped to 13-9-6 at home this season ... Jagr registered two assists ... New Jersey went 2-for-3 on the power play, while Dallas finished 0-for-3 on the man advantage.
