American League Game Summary - New York at LA Angels of Anaheim

(Wednesday, May 7th)

Final Score: New York 9, LA Angels of Anaheim 2

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Derek Jeter hit his first homer of the season, Vidal Nuno tossed 6 1/3 solid innings and the New York Yankees beat the Angels, 9-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series.

John Ryan Murphy and Mark Teixeira each knocked in two runs for the Yankees, who went 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Nuno (1-0) allowed one run on four hits while striking out three.

C.J. Cron went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Angels, who saw starter Hector Santiago (0-6) give up six runs -- two earned -- on five hits with three walks over 2 1/3 innings.

"Hector wasn't able to minimize damage tonight," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's an emotional guy and he needs to get his confidence back."

The Yankees gave Nuno some early run support with a five-run first inning, aided by an error. Jacoby Ellsbury walked and Jeter reached when right fielder Collin Cowgill bumped into Mike Trout as the center fielder was about to catch a harmless fly ball. Carlos Beltran walked to load the bases and Teixeira followed with a two-run double down the left-field line. After Alfonso Soriano struck out swinging, Yangervis Solarte hit a sacrifice fly.

Brett Gardner reached base on an infield single back to the pitcher and Santiago's throwing error allowed a run to score on the play. Brian Roberts then hit an RBI single to right.

"It was important for us to go out in front early," Teixeira said.

Jeter's solo homer to left-center field in the second made it 6-0.

"The fans have been awesome here from the first game," said Jeter, who played his final game in Anaheim. "It's something that you'll remember and I appreciate it. I've played a lot of great games here, competed in regular season and postseason. I have fond memories of playing here in Anaheim."

The Angels got on the board in the bottom of the second. Howie Kendrick and Cron singled to put men on the corners. Kendrick scored when Erick Aybar reached base on a fielder's choice, but Los Angeles left the bases full later in the frame.

Nuno retired 13 straight batters before giving up a leadoff double to Cron in the seventh. Aybar flied out before Dellin Betances replaced Nuno. Betances loaded the bases with two outs but got Cowgill to line out.

New York tacked on three more runs in the eighth. Nick Maronde loaded the bases without recording an out and Cory Rasmus gave up a two-run single to Murphy before Beltran added a sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Cron's RBI double in the bottom of the eighth made it a seven-run game.

Game Notes

The Angels went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven ... The Yankees had 12 hits, compared to six for the Angels ... Los Angeles went 5-4 on a nine-game homestand.
