National League Game Capsules
(Friday, August 1)

Final Score: Philadelphia 2, Washington 1

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Marlon Byrd's solo home run led the Philadelphia Phillies in a 2-1 win over the Washington Nationals in the second of a four-game set. Cody Asche had two hits and an RBI, while Roberto Hernandez (6-8) tossed eight innings of one-run, five-hit ball for the Phillies, who have won three of their last four. Ian Desmond drove in the lone run of the game for the Nationals, who have dropped four of five. Doug Fister (10-3) allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings to lose for the first time in seven starts.

Final Score: San Francisco 5, New York 1

Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Vogelsong pitched his second career complete game, Hunter Pence knocked in three runs and the San Francisco Giants beat the New York Mets 5-1 on Friday in the opener of a four-game series. Vogelsong (6-8) went the distance for the first time since 2011, limiting the Mets to one run on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts to snap a five- game losing streak. It was his first nine-inning complete game, however, as the right-hander blanked the Chicago Cubs in a rain-shortened, six-inning affair on May 14, 2011. Brandon Crawford went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Matt Duffy added an RBI in his major-league debut for the Giants, who have won two straight after a six-game skid. Jon Niese (5-7) was charged with five runs -- three earned -- on nine hits with four strikeouts over eight-plus innings in the setback.

Final Score: Cincinnati 5, Miami 2

Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Mat Latos pitched seven strong innings, Ryan Ludwick hit a two-run double and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Miami Marlins 5-2 on Friday night. Ludwick's hit came in a three-run sixth inning that knocked Jarred Cosart out of the game in his Marlins debut. The Reds also won the opener of the four-game series with a three-run inning on Thursday night -- scoring three runs in the eighth after a call was reversed in their favor. On Friday, Major League Baseball said the replay official who overturned the call at home plate that scored the first run and kept the inning alive for the Reds made the right decision. So Cincinnati has won two in a row overall after snapping a nine-game road skid in the opener -- the first time it has posted consecutive wins since a five-game run from July 6-9. Giancarlo Stanton homered for the third straight game for the Marlins but they lost their third in a row on the heels of a six-game winning streak. Latos (3-3) picked up his first win in four starts after allowing just one run on five hits and four walks in seven innings. He struck out five. Hard- throwing closer Aroldis Chapman was back on the mound for the Reds after apparently tweaking a lingering hamstring injury on Thursday. He worked around a single, getting an inning-ending double play Cosart (0-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings a day after he was acquired in a six-player deal with Houston ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline. He gave up four runs on four hits and two walks but also got his first major-league hit.

Final Score: Detroit 4, Colorado 2

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Verlander pitched eight strong innings and Rajai Davis finished with two RBI and two runs scored as the Detroit Tigers held on to beat the Colorado Rockies, 4-2. Verlander (10-9), who is now 25-2 for his career against National League opponents, allowed two runs and struck out five, while not allowing a walk. Ian Kinsler hit an RBI double during a three-run fifth inning and Victor Martinez had an RBI single for the Tigers, who won for just the second time in their last seven games. Franklin Morales (5-6) gave up three runs and walked four in six innings of work, leaving the Rockies at 2-16 in their last 18 road games.
