Mets, Jays working toward Dickey deal

(Sports Network) - Reigning NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey could be on the move.

Reports in both Toronto and New York indicate the Mets are set to deal the knuckleballer to the Blue Jays in a package that would likely include top catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud.

The Mets and Dickey have been unable to reach a contract extension, furthering speculation of a trade.

Fox Sports on Sunday afternoon reported that a trade will occur if Dickey and the Blue Jays can work out a contract extension.

Dickey had a career year in 2012, winning the Cy Young after posting a record of 20-6 with a 2.73 earned run average and 230 strikeouts over 233 2/3 innings. The 38-year-old right-hander reportedly wants a two-year extension worth $26 million.

The New York Post reported Sunday morning that a simple deal has now evolved into a potential seven-player swap.

In addition to Dickey, the Jays would receive catcher Josh Thole and a prospect in exchange for d'Arnaud, catcher John Buck, top pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard and another minor leaguer.

Toronto, however, may not want to part with the 23-year-old d'Arnaud, who hit .333 in 67 games at Triple-A Las Vegas with 16 homers and 52 runs batted in before a knee injury cut his season short in June.

The Blue Jays have been active this offseason. They have a new manager in John Gibbons, signed infielder Maicer Izturis and outfielder Melky Cabrera as free agents and made a blockbuster deal in November to acquire Buck, outfielder Emilio Bonafacio, pitchers Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle and former Mets shortstop Jose Reyes from the Marlins.
