Description: Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins has gone 10-for-29 with two homers, three RBI, six runs and three steals in his last eight games.
Insight: Rollins went 2-for-2 with a solo homer and two walks Wednesday against Washington. He has 17 homers in 500 at-bats this season after hitting just six in 600 at-bats a year ago.
Luis Valbuena, SS, CLEHot8/27/2014 10:35:00 PM
Description: Chicago Cubs third baseman Luis Valbuena has hit three home runs in his last seven games.
Insight: Valbuena, eligible at both 2B and 3B, has blasted 13 homers in 381 at-bats this year and is hitting .241 with 43 RBI, 48 runs and a .750 OPS.
Xander Bogaerts, SS, BOSCold8/27/2014 6:03:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (concussion) has been cleared to return to the lineup Saturday, according to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal.
Insight: Bogaerts was hit in the helmet by a pitch on Aug. 22. The shortstop is 7-for-66 (.106) in August and 97-for-435 (.223) on the season. Believe it or not, he was actually hitting .299 with an .839 OPS on June 7, but he's gone a pitiful 31-for-214 (.145) since then.
Alexei Ramirez, SS, CWS8/27/2014 3:29:00 PM
Description: White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez has homered in back-to-back games.
Insight: Ramirez is hitting .303 with nine doubles, three homers and 12 RBI in August and he has a .286 average, 13 home runs, 63 RBI, 67 runs and 18 steals on the year.
Eric Sogard, SS, OAK8/27/2014 12:08:00 PM
Description: Oakland second baseman Eric Sogard is a career .462 hitter (6-for-13) with three extra-base hits against Houston starter Brad Peacock.
Insight: Sogard doesn't provide much offense to the A's lineup, so it probably isn't worth rolling the dice with his guy on Wednesday. He is hitting .218 with one home run and 17 RBI this year in 90 games. If you need a spot start from a free agent second baseman, Sogard is your guy for Wednesday.
Ian Desmond, SS, WAS8/27/2014 11:38:00 AM
Description: Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond is hitting .385 (15-for-39) with two home runs and eight RBI against Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick in his career.
Insight: This might just be what the doctor ordered since Desmond is hitting .182 in the last week. The shortstop does seem like he is climbing out of the little slump as he has hits in his last three games, including one home run. His 21 home runs and 79 RBI lead all shortstops in the MLB this year.
Xander Bogaerts, SS, BOSCold8/26/2014 10:06:00 PM
Description: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (concussion) is expected to rejoin the team this weekend against the Rays, according to mlb.com.
Clint Barmes, SS, PIT8/26/2014 3:57:00 PM
Description: Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes will get his first start since returning from the disabled list.
Insight: Jordy Mercer will take a seat. Barmes missed almost two months with a groin strain. He was batting .239 with 14 runs scored and four RBI in 42 games. That isn't fantasy worthy.
Alcides Escobar, SS, KAN8/26/2014 11:08:00 AM
Description: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar is 7-for-14 (.500) with three extra-basae hits versus Minnesota right-hander Ricky Nolasco.
Insight: Escobar is hitting .274 with 43 RBI, 58 runs and 24 steals on the year and could be a viable fantasy option.
J.J. Hardy, SS, BALHot8/25/2014 10:14:00 PM
Description: Baltimore shortstop J.J. Hardy hit a solo homer Monday against the Rays.
Insight: Hardy admitted last week that he was still dealing with a thumb injury, but he's managed to hit .333 with four doubles, a homer, 12 RBI and 13 runs in August.
Yunel Escobar, SS, TAM8/25/2014 6:01:00 PM
Description: Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar won't be traded to the Athletics, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Insight: The A's claimed Escobar off revocable waivers, but the Rays have pulled him back. Escobar's offense has been in decline for years and he also has a negative UZR at shortstop for the first time in his career. As a result, he's been worse than replacement level this season (-0.1 WAR).
Clint Barmes, SS, PIT8/25/2014 3:32:00 PM
Description: Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes returns from the disabled list, but Jordy Mercer will continue to get the starts.
Insight: Barmes missed almost two months with a groin strain. He was batting .239 with 14 runs scored and four RBI in 42 games and should sit while Mercer (.259, 7 HR, 42 RBI, 47 runs) gets the at-bats.
Starlin Castro, SS, CHC8/25/2014 11:40:00 AM
Description: Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro has been activated from the bereavement list and will be available for Tuesday's game against Cincinnati.

Description: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts (concussion) has been placed on the 7-day disabled list.
Insight: Bogaerts was hit in the helmet by a pitch on Friday and hasn't passed a concussion test yet. The shortstop is 7-for-66 (.106) in August and 97-for-435 (.223) on the season. Believe it or not, he was actually hitting .299 with an .839 OPS on June 7, but he's gone a pitiful 31-for-214 (.145) since then.

Description: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar has gone 5-for-11 (.455) with a double and a homer against Twins starter Phil Hughes.

Description: Oakland shortstop Jed Lowrie (fractured finger) played Wednesday, but is expected to go on the disabled list.
Insight: Lowrie (.238, 5 HR, 42 RBI) tried, but the broken finger effected his hitting and throwing. Lowrie has not been able to reproduce last season's solid numbers (.290, 15 HR, 75 RBI, 80 runs). The A's are going to call up Andy Parrino.
Jayson Nix, SS, PIT8/14/2014 10:41:00 AM
Description: You weren't going to start the .149 hitting Jayson Nix anyway, but it's interesting to note that he's a career 0-for-11 with nine strikeouts against Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer.
Insight: That's not seeing the ball well. In the league seven seasons, the utility infielder has never batted above .243, and has zero fantasy value.
Troy Tulowitzki, SS, COL8/13/2014 10:33:00 PM
Description: Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (hip) will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the labrum in his left hip Friday, according to Thomas Harding.

Description: Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons (ankle) is back in the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers.
Insight: He was out of the lineup for six straight games. Simmons is a great glove man, but he's hitting .249 with five home runs and a .637 OPS.
