The cold corner
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The hot corner isn't an apt nickname for the third base position at the moment.

Most of fantasy's top third basemen are either ice cold or injured.

Take Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers, for example. The winner of the last two AL MVPs is hitting .225 with one home run, four RBI and a 10/3 K/BB this season.

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion, who doesn't play much third base but is still eligible there, is still looking for his first homer and is batting .220 even after going 3-for-4 Sunday.

The further down the list you go the uglier it gets.

David Wright, .229 with one home run.

Josh Donaldson, .222 with a 27.3 percent K rate.

Pablo Sandoval, .180 with a .621 OPS.

Brett Lawrie, .122 with two homers.

Jedd Gyorko, .163 with one big fly.

Martin Prado, .268, Kyle Seager, .133 and Carlos Santana, .186; those three have zero homers combined.

Then there are the wounded -- Adrian Beltre and Ryan Zimmerman, who were both placed on the 15-day disabled list this weekend, Beltre with a strained quad and Zimmerman with a fractured thumb.

Pedro Alvarez is only batting .178, but his five homers and 10 RBI make him look like an All-Star compared to the group above.

The only three top-20 fantasy third basemen who are currently both healthy and excelling are Evan Longoria, Matt Carpenter and Aramis Ramirez.

Longoria has a .313 average, one homer and five RBI, Carpenter picked up where he left off last year with a .295 average, one homer, nine RBI and 10 runs and Ramirez has bounced back from an injury-plagued 2013 with a .380 average, one round-tripper and 11 RBI.

All this means is that there are a lot of people who are unhappy with their fantasy third-base production right now but not much that can be done about it.

Good luck trying to buy low on Encarnacion if the only replacement third baseman you can offer is hitting below .200.

Likewise, the Longoria owners aren't going to want to part with their man for a package that includes Sandoval or Donaldson.

In the end, most of us are just going to have to wait for the cold corner to heat up.

Unless you drafted Mike Moustakas. It's time to cut bait on him.
