Cleveland Indians Player Notes
For The Last 365 Days

Michael Brantley, LFHot4/17/2014 10:49:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley recorded four RBI Thursday in a loss to Detroit.
Insight: That gives Brantley 14 RBI for the season, tied for third-most in the American League. He's on pace to drive in 151 runs this year, which is more than double his career-high in that category (73 in 2013).
Jason Kipnis, 2BCold4/17/2014 2:28:00 PM
Description: It was a short day for Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis as he was ejected in the third inning for arguing a strike call.
Insight: Not much was expected of Kipnis anyway, as he was just 3-for-24 (.125) in his career against Detroit's right-hander Justin Verlander, so this shouldn't hurt too many lineups.
Jason Kipnis, 2BCold4/17/2014 9:40:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is an ugly 3-for-24 (.125) in his career against Detroit's right-hander Justin Verlander.
Insight: That includes 11 Ks. Kipnis is hitting .220 with two homers, three steals and 11 walks in 14 games this season.
Michael Brantley, LF4/17/2014 9:29:00 AM
Description: Indians outfielder Michael Brantley is one of the rare hitters with success versus Detroit ace Justin Verlander.
Insight: Brantley is a career .395 hitter against the right-hander. He's also 4-for-4 in stolen bases once he gets on base.
Jason Kipnis, 2B4/16/2014 10:36:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is 3-for-17 in his career against Detroit's Anibal Sanchez.
Insight: That includes six Ks. Kipnis is hitting .234 with two homers, three steals and 10 walks in 13 games this season.
Jason Giambi, DH4/15/2014 9:42:00 PM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi is slated to return Friday against the Blue Jays. SOURCE: Indians.mlb.com
Insight: He's been on the disabled list with a broken rib. At age 43, Giambi (.183, 9 HR, 31 RBI last season) is the oldest active player in Major League Baseball. His next game will be the 2,235th of his career.
Nyjer Morgan, CF4/15/2014 3:37:00 PM
Description: Indians outfielder Nyjer Morgan has been sent to the minors to make room for Michael Bourn.
Insight: Morgan played well in his nine games, batting .348 with four runs, four RBI and three stolen bases. He figures to get another chance at the major league level before the year is over.
Michael Bourn, CF4/15/2014 3:33:00 PM
Description: The Indians have activated center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) from the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Bourn's injury may have him running conservatively when he returns, though he did steal a base in his rehab stint. The 31-year-old had just 23 steals on 35 attempts in 2013 after averaging 51 steals and 63 attempts per season from 2008-12.
David Murphy, RFHot4/12/2014 10:10:00 PM
Description: Indians right fielder David Murphy (2-5) collected four RBI Saturday in a 12-6 victory over the White Sox.
Insight: David Murphy the power-hitter? So far the 32-year-old is on pace for 27 jacks and 135 RBI. His career-high is only 74 RBI so fantasy owners shouldn't get too excited. We'll see if Murphy can stay hot Sunday in the series finale.
Nyjer Morgan, CF4/12/2014 10:54:00 AM
Description: Indians outfielder Nyjer Morgan is back in the lineup for Saturday.
Insight: Morgan is batting .389 this season through his first eight games, but hasn't played since Wednesday.
Michael Brantley, LF4/11/2014 10:04:00 AM
Description: Michael Brantley could get a day off on Friday as he's just 2-for-16 (.125) with eight strikeouts versus White Sox ace Chris Sale.
Insight: Brantley is off to a decent start, batting .289 through the first 10 games which is 21 points higher than his career April average.
Michael Bourn, CF4/10/2014 8:00:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) is likely to return on April 15, though he hasn't been ruled out for April 13. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Bourn's injury may have him running conservatively when he returns, which isn't good for a player whose main contributions to fantasy teams are stolen bases and runs. The 31-year-old had just 23 steals on 35 attempts in 2013 after averaging 51 steals and 63 attempts per season from 2008-12.
Jason Kipnis, 2B4/10/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is a .385 hitter with a 1.246 OPS versus White Sox left-hander John Danks.
Insight: Kipnis is struggling so far, batting just .194, but has a favorable matchup.
Trevor Bauer, SP4/9/2014 8:10:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer struck out eight men in six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, but he took a loss against the Padres.
Insight: The 2011 No. 3 overall pick's stock has fallen due to control issues after he went 12-2 with a 2.42 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 130 1/3 innings in the minors in 2012. He had 73 walks, 106 strikeouts and a 4.15 ERA in 121 1/3 innings with Triple-A Columbus last season and owns a 5.03 ERA and a 36/31 K/BB in 39 1/3 big league innings. Still, Wednesday's results are encouraging, especially because Bauer averaged nearly 95 mph with his fastball. He may be recalled if Carlos Carrasco continues to struggle.
Zach McAllister, SP4/9/2014 8:08:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Zach McAllister tossed a gem Wednesday against the Padres.
Insight: McAllister allowed five hits, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter over 7 2/3 innings to win his first game of the season. He put 10 men on base and gave up three earned runs in four innings at Oakland in his first start of the year and had a 1.36 WHIP over the last two seasons.
David Murphy, RFHot4/8/2014 10:24:00 PM
Description: Indians right fielder David Murphy followed up his four-hit game Sunday with two more hits, including his first homer with Cleveland, in three at-bats Tuesday against the Padres.
Insight: Murphy also had a double and scored three runs. The Rangers tasked Murphy, who hit .304 with 15 homers in 2012, with replacing Josh Hamilton last season, but he batted .220 with 13 homers and a .656 OPS. He's trying to bounce back in Cleveland.
David Murphy, RF4/6/2014 7:02:00 PM
Description: Indians right fielder David Murphy swatted four hits Sunday in a loss to Minnesota.
Insight: Murphy had just two hits in 14 at bats this season prior to Sunday. It's the veteran's first four-hit game since June 27, 2012.
Jason Kipnis, 2B4/4/2014 9:01:00 PM
Description: The Indians have signed second baseman Jason Kipnis to a six-year, $52.5 million contract extension.
Insight: He's a bargain compared to Dustin Pedroia (eight years, $110 million) and Robinson Cano (ten years, $240 million). Through four games, Kipnis is hitting .188 with no homers or RBI.
Michael Bourn, CF4/3/2014 3:08:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) starts a rehab assignment on Thursday at Triple-A Columbus.
Insight: Bourne could return as soon as Saturday. We worry that this injury could have him running conservatively at the start of 2014.The 31-year-old averaged 51.4 steals 2008-12, but swiped just 23 bags last season and his fantasy value is tied to his speed.
Michael Bourn, CF4/2/2014 11:18:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) began the season on the disabled list, but could be back on the first day he's eligible - April 5.
Insight: We worry that this injury could have him running conservatively at the start of 2014.The 31-year-old averaged 51.4 steals 2008-12, but swiped just 23 bags last season and his fantasy value is tied to his speed.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS4/2/2014 10:02:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is hitless in nine at-bats against Oakland starter Scott Kazmir. He's struck out three times.
Insight: This is the first of a day-night doubleheader after Tuesday night's rainout. Cabrera owners are hoping for a return to 2011 production levels (.273, 87 runs, 25 HR, 92 RBI, .792 OPS), but its more likely that what we have seen the past two seasons is what we will see this year as well (.257, 68 runs, 15 HR, 66 RBI, .732 OPS).
Zach McAllister, SP4/1/2014 9:00:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Zach McAllister still will start Wednesday against the Athletics despite Tuesday's rainout. SOURCE: Jim Berdysz, indiansbaseballinsider.com
Insight: Corey Kluber will start the first game of the doubleheader against Scott Kazmir. The Athletics pushed Wednesday's scheduled starter Jesse Chavez to Thursday and will call someone up to start Wednesday night against McAllister. McAllister went 15-17 with a 3.99 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP and a 7.3 K/9 the last two seasons.
Justin Masterson, SP4/1/2014 7:54:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson held the Athletics scoreless in seven innings on Opening Day Monday night.
Insight: Masterson gave up four hits, walked one and struck out four. The right-hander had his best season in 2013, going 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP and 195 strikeouts in 193 innings. He had a 7.1 K/9 in his first five seasons, but he turned his slider into a dominant out pitch last year.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS4/1/2014 10:27:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is hitless in nine at-bats against Oakland starter Scott Kazmir. He's struck out three times.
Insight: Cabrera owners are hoping for a return to 2011 production levels (.273, 87 runs, 25 HR, 92 RBI, .792 OPS), but its more likely that what we have seen the past two seasons is what we will see this year as well (.257, 68 runs, 15 HR, 66 RBI, .732 OPS). Avoid him on Tuesday.
Yan Gomes, C3/30/2014 11:13:00 AM
Description: Indians catcher Yan Gomes has agreed to a six-year, $23 million contract extension. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: Among catchers with 200+ at bats last season, only Detroit's Brayan Pena produced a higher batting average than Gomes (.294). He won't hit free agency until 2019.
Carlos Carrasco, SP3/26/2014 11:33:00 AM
Description: Carlos Carrasco won the competition for the final spot in the Indians' rotation, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Insight: The 27-year-old Carrasco throws hard but has a 5.29 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in 238 1/3 big league innings. He also has a 5.17 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP this spring, compared to 3.54 and 1.18 for Josh Tomlin. The Indians want to control Tomlin's innings after he had Tommy John surgery in August 2012, so he'll start out in Triple-A along with Trevor Bauer.
Yan Gomes, C3/25/2014 5:30:00 PM
Description: Carlos Santana was named the Indians' starting third baseman on Tuesday, which means Yan Gomes will be the everyday catcher.
Insight: Gomes hit .294 wth 11 homers in just 322 plate appearances last season. His average will come down after he posted a .342 BABIP last year despite a 17.8 percent line-drive rate, but he should hit 20+ homers. Gomes is also a much better defensive catcher than Santana, which will help Cleveland's pitching staff.
Carlos Santana, 3B3/25/2014 1:50:00 PM
Description: Carlos Santana will be Cleveland's starting third baseman in 2014. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: Santana (.268, 20 HR, 74 RBI) played third base in winter ball and a little during spring training. The 27-year-old should also see time at catcher and first base this season.
Nyjer Morgan, CF3/24/2014 2:15:00 PM
Description: The Indians will keep outfielder Nyjer Morgan on the team when they head north, according to beat reporter Jordan Bastian.
Insight: Morgan won't start, but can back up all three outfield position. He stole 42 bases in 2009, but hasn't topped 15 the past two seasons due to lack of at-bats which should be the problem in 2014 as well. He has very little fantasy value.
Michael Bourn, CF3/24/2014 2:06:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) will begin the season on the disabled list, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com
Insight: The 31-year-old averaged 51.4 steals 2008-12 but swiped just 23 bags last season. We worry that this injury could have him running conservatively at the start of 2014.
Michael Bourn, CF3/17/2014 2:00:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn, who left Sunday's game with tightness in his left hamstring, will miss at least one week and should be considered questionable for Opening Day, according to beat writer Paul Hoynes.
Insight: The 31-year-old averaged 51.4 steals and 63.6 attempts per season from 2008-12, but he swiped just 23 bags on 35 attempts in 130 games last year and this hamstring injury could have him running conservatively at the start of the 2014 season.
Michael Bourn, CF3/16/2014 5:26:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn left Sunday's game with mild tightness in his left hamstring.
Insight: The Indians tweeted that Bourn was removed for precautionary reasons and will be reevaluated Monday. The 31-year-old averaged 51.4 steals and 63.6 attempts per season from 2008-12, but he swiped just 23 bags on 35 attempts in 130 games last year.
Jason Giambi, DH3/13/2014 2:39:00 PM
Description: Cleveland DH Jason Giambi has suffered a non-displaced rib fracture and will miss 3-4 weeks, according to the team
Insight: It's pretty incredible that Giambi is still playing at age 43 but things heal slowly at that age. Though he did smack nine homers in 2013, we doubt he'll get enough at bats to warrant fantasy consideration this season.
Carlos Santana, DH3/7/2014 3:25:00 PM
Description: Indians DH Carlos Santana has not looked comfortable at third base during Cactus League games, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: Santana played third base in winter ball and the Indians are trying him out there during spring training. The 27-year-old should get work in at catcher, first base and third base this season though he's slated to be the team's primary DH. His eligibility at catcher is what makes him valuable to fantasy owners.
Trevor Bauer, SP3/4/2014 10:19:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer's fastball sat around 93-96 mph while topping out at 98 during his two-inning Cactus League outing Sunday, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Bauer has averaged 92.4 mph in eight big league appearances. The 2011 No. 3 overall pick's stock has fallen due to control issues after he went 12-2 with a 2.42 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 130 1/3 innings in the minors in 2012. He had 73 walks, 106 strikeouts and a 4.15 ERA in 121 1/3 innings with Triple-A Columbus last season and owns a 5.67 ERA and a 28/29 K/BB in 33 1/3 big league innings.
Carlos Santana, C2/17/2014 9:40:00 PM
Description: Indians catcher Carlos Santana "looked comfortable" at third base during his infield session Monday, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Insight: Santana played third base in winter ball and the Indians are trying him out there during spring training. The 27-year-old may end up carrying eligibility at catcher, first base and third base, but his numbers work best at catcher.
Aaron Harang, SP2/15/2014 2:08:00 PM
Description: Righthander Aaron Harang will attend spring training with the Indians. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: It's anyone's guess whether he'll make the team. If he does, we wouldn't count on him as a fantasy option after posting a 5.40 ERA in 26 starts in 2013.
Michael Brantley, LF2/10/2014 9:34:00 PM
Description: Michael Brantley's new deal will be worth $25 million over the next four seasons. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: It could potentially be a five-year, $36 million deal if the team picks up his option for 2018. The new contract shows that the Indians have confidence in him but it shouldn't change Bradley's value heading into the 2014 fantasy campaign.
Michael Brantley, LF2/10/2014 8:56:00 PM
Description: Left fielder Michael Brantley is close to signing a four-year extension with Cleveland. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Brantley wasn't going to be a free agent until 2017 so the Indians must really want to keep him. The 26-year-old is good at many things but not great at any of them. We wouldn't pay more than a dollar or two for Brantley (.284, 10 HR, 73 RBI, 17 SB in 2013) in an auction draft.
Bryan LaHair, 1B2/5/2014 9:07:00 PM
Description: Former Cubs first baseman Bryan LaHair will join the Indians for spring training.
Insight: LaHair made the NL All-Star team in 2012 but was phased out after Anthony Rizzo emerged as the Cubs' best power hitter. Even if he ends up making the 25-man roster, we don't anticipate LaHair having any fantasy value in 2014.
Carlos Santana, C1/18/2014 2:10:00 PM
Description: Indians catcher Carlos Santana has been working at third base, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes.
Insight: Santana was expected to get most of his at-bats at DH this season allowing Yan Gomes to get the majority of the time behind the plate. If Santana adds 3B eligibility to DH/C he'll be even more valuable.
Luis Valbuena, SS1/17/2014 10:10:00 AM
Description: The Chicago Cubs and third baseman Luis Valbuena agreed to a one-year deal.
Insight: Valbuena is expected to be the opening day starter, but he'll need to improve on .218, 12 HR, 37 RBI if he wants to keep it all season long. The Cubs has Donnie Murphy and ryan Roberts who can both play the hot corner. None of the three figure to be a viable fantasy option.
Nyjer Morgan, CF1/14/2014 7:43:00 PM
Description: The Indians have reached terms on a minor league deal with former Nationals and Brewers outfielder Nyjer Morgan. SOURCE: Jerry Crasnick, ESPN
Insight: Morgan last played in the major leagues in 2012 when he hit .239 with three homers and 16 RBI in 122 games for Milwaukee. He's not going to be an everyday player in Cleveland.
Jeff Francoeur, RF1/7/2014 5:09:00 PM
Description: Outfielder Jeff Francoeur signed a minor league deal with Cleveland on Monday. SOURCE: Jerry Crasnick, ESPN
Insight: He'll try to make the team out of spring training. 2013 was arguably Francoeur's worst season yet. In 81 combined games for the Giants and Royals, he tallied just three homers and 17 RBI. He hit 59 points below his career average (.263).
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP12/31/2013 7:43:00 PM
Description: Free agent starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez is hoping to land a four-year deal worth between $17 and 20 million annually this offseason. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Jimenez definitely improved his stock by having an excellent season in 2013 (13-9, 3.30 ERA) but nobody's going to pay him $20 million a year. Any team that signs him will have to give up a draft pick to do so after Jimenez rejected the Indians' $14 million qualifying offer back in November.
John Axford, RP12/16/2013 9:25:00 PM
Description: Righthander John Axford has signed on to be the Indians' new ninth inning man. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: The former Brewers closer is set to make $4.5 million in 2014. He split last season between Milwaukee and St. Louis, earning a 4.04 ERA in 75 appearances. His 19 holds were a career-high.
Shaun Marcum, SP12/16/2013 9:19:00 PM
Description: Former Brewers and Mets righthander Shaun Marcum has agreed to a minor league deal with Cleveland. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: Marcum was dreadful last season, finishing with a 1-10 record in 14 appearances. We wouldn't rule out a bounceback year in 2014, however, as Marcum owns a respectable 3.88 ERA in 188 career appearances.
Grady Sizemore, CF12/10/2013 9:48:00 AM
Description: Free agent outfielder Grady Sizemore says he wants to play in 2014, according to Indians beat writer Paul Hoynes.
Insight: Sizemore hasn't played in the big leagues since 2011 and hasn't been a fantasy star since 2008. He'll have to show me something before I get excited about a comeback.
David Murphy, LF11/19/2013 10:30:00 PM
Description: David Murphy is headed to Cleveland. The former Texas outfielder has agreed to a two-year deal worth $10 million. SOURCE: Dallas Morning News
Insight: It's not an ideal landing spot as Murphy seems destined for a platoon with the equally inconsistent Drew Stubbs in right field. Murphy batted just .220 across 142 games last season, his lowest average in eight seasons in MLB.
Scott Kazmir, SP11/13/2013 9:57:00 PM
Description: The Orioles have expressed an interest in free agent lefthander Scott Kazmir. SOURCE: Nick Cafardo, Boston Globe
Insight: It seems like he's been around a long time but Kazmir is still only 29. He's 2-3 with a 4.86 ERA in seven career starts at Camden Yards.
Scott Kazmir, SP11/9/2013 9:43:00 PM
Description: Free agent starter Scott Kazmir seems unlikely to re-sign with Cleveland. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Kazmir wants at least a two-year contract and the Indians aren't willing to commit beyond a one-year deal. 2013 marked the lefthander's first ten-win season since 2009.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP11/9/2013 9:30:00 PM
Description: Righthander Ubaldo Jimenez is a longhsot to return to Cleveland next season. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: The Indians are trying to keep him but if the money is better elsewhere, don't be surprised if Jimenez bolts. Jimenez's 3.30 ERA this year was his lowest since 2010.
Chris Perez, RP10/31/2013 9:28:00 PM
Description: The Indians released Chris Perez on Thursday. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian. MLB.com
Insight: It was only a matter of time. Perez was a disaster in the second half (5.60 ERA in 27 games) and was eventually demoted to a setup role late in the season. Perez throws upper 90s cheese but often has trouble locating. It shouldn't take the reliever too long to find a new team.
Jason Giambi, DH10/31/2013 9:17:00 PM
Description: Cleveland DH Jason Giambi will return for another season. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: It's pretty incredible that Giambi is still playing at age 42. Though he did smack nine homers in 2013, we doubt he'll get enough at bats to warrant fantasy consideration next season.
Justin Masterson, SP10/2/2013 6:36:00 PM
Description: Cleveland manager Terry Francona indicated that righthander Justin Masterson may be used as the team's closer during the postseason. SOURCE: Indians.com
Insight: Masterson was the team's best starter for much of the season but an oblique injury has forced him to take on a lighter workload. He certainly has the velocity to pull it off and Masterson does have experience as a reliever (62 lifetime appearances out of the bullpen). Former closer Chris Perez did make the Indians' postseason roster but it's clear that Francona doesn't trust him as a ninth inning option any longer.
Michael Bourn, CF10/2/2013 6:29:00 PM
Description: As expected, Michael Bourn will lead off and play center field Wednesday against the Rays.
Insight: Bourn was in and out of the lineup last week because of a calf injury. The speedy outfielder has only appeared in three career postseason games with his lone hit coming as a member of the Atlanta Braves back in 2012.
Zach McAllister, SP10/2/2013 10:00:00 AM
Description: Indians starter Zach McAllister is questionable for his next scheduled start.
Insight: McAllister went 9-9 this season with a decent ERA (3.75), but an inflated WHIP due to a mediocre K-BB ratio. His fantasy value was minimal this season.
Jason Giambi, 1B10/2/2013 9:54:00 AM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi is questionable for Wednesday's American League Wild Card game against Tampa Bay.
Insight: In a part-time role as a pinch-hitter and player coach, Giambi has hit .183 with nine homers and 31 RBI in 186 at-bats.
Michael Bourn, CF10/2/2013 9:52:00 AM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn (calf) is probable for Wednesday's American League Wild Card game against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Bourn's statistics dipped in every category this season (.263, 6 HR, 50 RBI, 75 R, 23 SB, .676 OPS). He's also just 1-for-7 (.143) against Rays right-hander Alex Cobb.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SPHot9/29/2013 6:50:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez dominated the Twins Sunday at Target Field.
Insight: The Indians righthander delivered 13 punchouts in 6 2/3 innings. Jimenez has been sensational over the last month, collecting four wins and a 1.09 ERA in 41 1/3 September innings. The Indians will face the winner of tomorrow's tiebreaker game between Texas and Tampa Bay Wednesday in Cleveland. The winner of that will play the Red Sox in the ALDS.
Danny Salazar, SP9/29/2013 2:45:00 PM
Description: Cleveland manager Terry Francona indicated that rookie hurler Danny Salazar would pitch Monday if the Indians have to play Texas or Tampa Bay in a Wild Card tiebreaker game. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: If the Indians win today, they won't need to play on Monday. Salazar has posted a 2.52 ERA in five September appearances.
Scott Kazmir, SPHot9/29/2013 12:56:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Scott Kazmir struck out 11 batters in six innings Saturday against the Twins and 21 in his final two starts this year.
Insight: Kazmir's K/BB ratio in September was an impeccable 43/4, and he went 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA and 162 strikeouts in 158 innings during his comeback season. He is expected to begin discussions on a new contract with Cleveland soon.
Michael Bourn, CF9/28/2013 11:17:00 AM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn (wrist) will return to action Saturday against the Twins.
Insight: Bourn has missed three straight games with a sprained right wrist but he is back in the leadoff spot in the lineup as the Indians try to lock up a Wild Card berth with a win and a Texas loss Saturday.
Carlos Santana, C9/28/2013 9:42:00 AM
Description: Indians Carlos Santana went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two walks, three runs and one RBI Friday against the Twins.
Insight: Santana has shown strong plate discipline, walking 90-plus times in three straight seasons, but he hasn't emerged as a 30-homer, 100-RBI threat. He has hit 19 homers with 71 RBI and .269/.379/.451 splits this season, and fantasy owners shouldn't pay for any more than that next season, when the catcher will be 28 years old.
Jason Kipnis, 2B9/28/2013 9:37:00 AM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, two RBI and two runs Friday night at Minnesota.
Insight: Kipnis finished the first half red hot and homered in his first two games after the All-Star break, but he has hit .248 with just two homers and a .670 OPS over his last 60 games. This is the second straight year he has tailed off after the All-Star break, so fantasy owners will should be prepared to sell high if he has another strong first half next season.
Chris Perez, RPCold9/27/2013 6:38:00 PM
Description: The Indians will use a committee at closer for the final three games.
Insight: Chris Perez has allowed seven hits (3 HR) and six earned runs over his last two appearances and the team cannot afford to let any games slip away at this point.
Michael Bourn, CF9/27/2013 5:41:00 PM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn (wrist) is not in the lineup Friday.
Insight: It's his third straight absence due to a right wrist sprain. The outfielder has a disappointing 23 steals this season to go with a .260 average, .668 OPS and 73 runs in 128 games.
Michael Bourn, CF9/27/2013 9:25:00 AM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn didn't play Thursday versus the Twins, his second consecutive game watching from the sidelines due to a sore wrist.
Insight: Bourn has put together a decent season in Cleveland batting .260 with 73 runs scored and 23 SB.
Michael Bourn, CF9/26/2013 7:15:00 PM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn won't play Thursday versus the Twins.
Insight: Bourn's wrist is still a bit sore. If he's feeling up to it, he could make a pinch-hitting appearance later on.
Michael Bourn, CF9/25/2013 8:17:00 PM
Description: Michael Bourn's X-rays came back negative. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: The Indians center fielder is dealing with a bruised wrist. He should be available to pinch-hit tonight against the White Sox.
Michael Brantley, LF9/24/2013 10:45:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley had three hits, including his 10th homer, two RBI, two runs and a stolen base Tuesday against the White Sox.
Insight: Brantley has provided fantasy owners with a .283 average and set career highs with 10 homers, 70 RBI, 65 runs and 16 steals.
Justin Masterson, SP9/24/2013 9:48:00 PM
Description: Indians pitcher Justin Masterson (oblique) has been cleared to return as a reliever, according to MLB.com.
Insight: Masterson (14-10, 3.52 ERA) was removed from his start on Sept. 2 due to a strained left oblique and hasn't pitched since. Fantasy owners hoping he would make one more start this season can drop him.
Scott Kazmir, SP9/21/2013 9:42:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Scott Kazmir's comeback season has had its rocky moments but he has thrown 152 innings, struck out 151 batters, won nine games and posted a 4.14 ERA.
Insight: Kazmir threw just 1 2/3 innings in 2011 and missed all of 2012 due to injury before the Indians gave him a shot this year. In his latest start Saturday against Houston, Kazmir struck out 10 batters, walked one and gave up four hits over seven shutout innings.
Danny Salazar, SP9/20/2013 6:58:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Danny Salazar will make his last regular season start Tuesday against the White Sox, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: The Indians have been very protective of the 23-year-old, limiting him to an average of 77 pitches and 4.7 innings over his last seven starts even though he has posted a 3.00 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 33 innings during that span. His postseason role (if Cleveland makes it) is undecided.
Justin Masterson, SP9/20/2013 6:46:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Justin Masterson (oblique) threw off a mound Friday for the first time since suffering his injury earlier this month. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: Masterson (14-10, 3.52 ERA) hasn't been ruled out for a return this season, but he'll only make one start if he does come back.
Jason Giambi, 1B9/18/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi doesn't get many starts these days, but he could get one against Wednesday's starter Bruce Chen as he's a career .375 hitter with four homers in 16 at-bats.
Insight: In a part-time role as a pinch-hitter and player coach, Giambi has hit .181 with eight homers and 29 RBI in 177 at-bats.
Ryan Raburn, RF9/15/2013 10:42:00 AM
Description: Indians utility man Ryan Raburn is 6-for-16 (.375) with three doubles, two homers and three walks against White Sox ace Chris Sale.
Insight: As a part-timer, Raburn has hit .285 with 18 doubles, 16 homers, 53 RBI and a .983 OPS on 240 plate appearances. He needs one more homer to set a new career high.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SPHot9/14/2013 10:35:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez turned in another gem Saturday against the White Sox (8 1/3 IP, 8 H, 1 ER).
Insight: That's three wins in a row for Jimenez, who has now recorded double-digit strikeouts in three of his last five starts. He's got another layup coming Thursday against the last place Astros.
Jason Kubel, LF9/11/2013 10:35:00 AM
Description: Cleveland OF/DH Jason Kubel is a career .450 hitter (9-for-20) against Royals right-hander James Shields.
Insight: It was just a season ago that Kubel posted 30 HR and 90 RBI for the D'backs, but his production has been non-existent this season (.220, 5 HR, 32 RBI).
Ubaldo Jimenez, SPHot9/9/2013 9:59:00 PM
Description: Cleveland righthander Ubaldo Jimenez defeated the Royals with a seven-inning effort Monday at Progressive Field.
Insight: Jimenez (7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 10 K's, 0 BB) is quietly having one of his best seasons. His 3.62 ERA is the lowest he's posted since 2010. Jimenez (11-9) and the Indians are now just a game and a half behind Tampa Bay in the American League Wild Card.
Jason Kubel, LFCold9/9/2013 12:33:00 PM
Description: Cleveland OF/DH Jason Kubel is a career .190 hitter (4-for-21) with no extra base hits and six strikeouts versus Royals starter Ervin Santana.
Insight: It was just a season ago that Kubel posted 30 HR and 90 RBI for the D'backs, but his production has been non-existent this season (.223, 5 HR, 32 RBI). The Indians' other DH option, Jason Giambi, is even worse (.095 vs. Santana).
Nick Swisher, 1B9/7/2013 10:03:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher has homered in two straight games.
Insight: He has gone 4-for-9 with six RBI after going 8-for-44 (.182) with zero longballs in his previous 12 games. Swisher has 17 homers this season but is hitting just .241 with 52 RBI and a .744 OPS.
Corey Kluber, SP9/7/2013 10:01:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Corey Kluber beat the Mets in his return to the rotation from a sprained middle finger.
Insight: Kluber was limited to 64 pitches in his first start since early August, but that's all he needed to get through five innings. The right-hander gave up two runs to New York and has a 2.15 ERA in 46 innings over his last seven starts.
Michael Brantley, LF9/7/2013 3:15:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Brantley has put together a solid season (.278, 8 HR, 59 RBI, 60 runs, 15 SB). Not starter value, but worthy of a backup role on many fantasy rosters.
Scott Kazmir, SP9/6/2013 10:19:00 PM
Description: Cleveland lefthander Scott Kazmir notched a season-high 12 strikeouts Friday against the Mets.
Insight: And he did it in only six innings of work. Friday was Kazmir's first win in over a month (August 4th against Miami). His next start will be against Kansas City.
Justin Masterson, SP9/6/2013 6:25:00 PM
Description: The Indians should know soon whether or not Justin Masterson will be returning before the end of the season. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: Masterson (14-10, 3.52 ERA) strained his oblique Monday against the Orioles. The Indians are fighting for their playoff lives (three back in the Wild Card, six and a half behind in the division) and having Masterson back sooner rather than later would give them a huge boost.
Corey Kluber, SP9/4/2013 11:07:00 AM
Description: Indians righthander Corey Kluber will make his return from the DL on Saturday instead of Friday as previously reported. SOURCE: Akron Beacon Journal
Insight: Kluber (7-5, 3.54 ERA) has missed the last month with a sprained middle finger on his pitching hand. Cleveland skipper Terry Francona said Kluber will be limited to about 80 pitches in his first start back. That translates to around five innings of work.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SPHot9/3/2013 10:04:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez blanked the Orioles on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks to win Tuesday's game.
Insight: Jimenez is scary to own but there's no doubting his results this season. He's 10-9 with a 3.79 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 147 1/3 innings, including 10-7 with a 2.97 ERA in his last 130 1/3 innings after starting out 0-2 with a 10.06 ERA. He has gone 3-5 with a 2.22 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings since the All-Star break.
Justin Masterson, SP9/3/2013 6:03:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Justin Masterson will not make his next start due to a strained oblique, according to Nick Camino of WTAM 1100 Newsradio Cleveland.
Insight: The 28-year-old Masterson has had a nice bounce-back year after going 11-15 with a 4.93 ERA in 2012. In 189 1/3 innings, he has a 3.52 ERA and a career-high 188 strikeouts. Oblique strains can be slow healing, so there's no guarantee Masterson will return this season.
Justin Masterson, SP9/3/2013 10:38:00 AM
Description: Indians starter Justin Masterson left Monday's game against the Orioles with soreness in his left rib cage and is doubtful for his next scheduled start.
Insight: The 28-year-old Masterson has had a nice bounce-back year after going 11-15 with a 4.93 ERA in 2012. In 189 1/3 innings, he has a 3.52 ERA and a career-high 188 strikeouts. Masterson's K/9 was 7.00 or lower in each of the last three seasons.
Ryan Raburn, RF9/3/2013 10:35:00 AM
Description: Indians utility man Ryan Raburn (calf/Achilles) is expected to be activated from the 15-day DL.
Insight: Raburn has posted solid numbers in limited playing time this season (.272, 15 HR, 41 RBI in 71 games).
Justin Masterson, SP9/2/2013 5:55:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Justin Masterson left Monday's game against the Orioles with soreness in his left rib cage, according to MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli.
Insight: If it is an oblique injury, his season could be over. The 28-year-old Masterson has had a nice bounce-back year after going 11-15 with a 4.93 ERA in 2012. In 189 1/3 innings, he has a 3.52 ERA and a career-high 188 strikeouts. Masterson's K/9 was 7.00 or lower in each of the last three seasons.
Corey Kluber, SP9/2/2013 4:55:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Corey Kluber (finger) has been cleared to start Friday against the Mets, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Kluber last pitched Aug. 5 due to a sprained middle finger. The right-hander had a 1.98 ERA and 40 K in 41 innings over his last six starts before his injury.
Mike Aviles, SS9/1/2013 5:35:00 PM
Description: Mike Aviles' first career grand slam couldn't have come at a better time. It broke a scoreless tie in the ninth inning Sunday against Detroit.
Insight: The four-run blast was Aviles' only hit of the afternoon. The Cleveland third baseman has now homered in two of his last four outings. Despite his recent power surge, Aviles doesn't play often enough to be a legitimate fantasy option (just 306 at bats).
Danny Salazar, SP9/1/2013 5:28:00 PM
Description: Cleveland righthander Danny Salazar (6 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 5 K's) was terrific Sunday against Detroit.
Insight: Salazar didn't factor into the decision but the Indians scored four runs after he left to win it by a count of 4-0. The 23-year-old has looked sharp in his last four outings despite going winless over that span (0-2, 2.79 ERA).
Michael Brantley, LF9/1/2013 9:08:00 AM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley has torched Justin Verlander for six RBI and 14 hits, including a double and a triple, in 35 career at-bats.
Insight: That amounts to a .400 average and a .933 OPS. Verlander is on the mound Sunday against the Indians, so get Brantley in the lineup.
Jason Kipnis, 2B9/1/2013 9:05:00 AM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis has been miserable against Tigers starter Justin Verlander, going 3-for-22 with 10 strikeouts.
Insight: Kipnis cooled off in August, hitting .250 with just one home run and seven extra-base hits in 120 plate appearances. He should have trouble breaking out Sunday against Verlander.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS9/1/2013 9:04:00 AM
Description: Detroit starter Justin Verlander has struck out Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera 20 times in 52 at-bats.
Insight: Cabrera has hit .212 (11-for-52) against Verlander in their previous meetings. Make sure he's not in your fantasy lineup Sunday.
Nick Swisher, 1B9/1/2013 9:02:00 AM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher has hit .194 with 22 K in 62 at-bats against Justin Verlander, though eight of his 12 hits went for extra bases.
Insight: Swisher has seen a massive drop in production from what he averaged with New York. In 119 games, he's hitting .242 with 15 home runs, 46 RBI and a .740 OPS. With Verlander on the mound Sunday, Swisher shouldn't be in any fantasy lineups.
Yan Gomes, C8/31/2013 10:55:00 PM
Description: Indians catcher Yan Gomes hit his ninth home run of the season Saturday at Detroit.
Insight: Cleveland's backup backstop has hit .288 with 29 RBI and an .827 OPS this season, making him an option for AL-only leagues even though he doesn't play everyday.
Carlos Santana, C8/31/2013 10:51:00 PM
Description: Indians Carlos Santana blasted five homers over his final 18 games of August.
Insight: He went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI Saturday against Detroit and is hitting .265 with 17 home runs, 60 RBI and an .827 OPS. Those are solid numbers, but fantasy owners expected more.
Corey Kluber, SP8/31/2013 8:57:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Corey Kluber (finger) could be activated as soon as Friday for a start against the Mets. SOURCE: Cleveland.com
Insight: Kluber last pitched Aug. 5 due to a sprained middle finger. The right-hander had a 1.98 ERA and 40 K in 41 innings over his last six starts before his injury. He'll need to get through a simulated game Monday before he's cleared to start, and he'd be held to four innings or 60 pitches in his return.
Jason Kubel, LF8/30/2013 1:43:00 PM
Description: The Diamondbacks have traded outfielder Jason Kubel to the Cleveland Indians.
Insight: It was just a season ago that Kubel posted 30 HR and 90 RBI for the D'backs, but his production has been non-existent this season (.220, 5 HR, 32 RBI). He'll be a part-time guy in Cleveland, so his fantasy value is limited.
Ryan Raburn, RF8/28/2013 7:49:00 PM
Description: A left Achilles strain has landed Indians utility man Ryan Raburn on the 15-day DL.
Insight: The move was backdated to August 19th, which means that Raburn can return as early as next Tuesday. Raburn has posted solid numbers in limited playing time this season (.272, 15 HR, 41 RBI in 71 games).
Corey Kluber, SP8/27/2013 5:44:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Corey Kluber (finger) threw fastballs and changeups with no issues during a bullpen session and sliders and cutters off flat ground Monday, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
Insight: Kluber last pitched Aug. 5 due to a sprained middle finger. The right-hander had a 1.98 ERA and 40 K in 41 innings over his last six starts before his injury. He's hoping to rejoin the rotation in the second week of September.
Ryan Raburn, RF8/27/2013 9:58:00 AM
Description: Cleveland utility player Ryan Raburn is questionable for Tuesday's game against Atlanta with a strained right calf and sore left heel.
Insight: Raburn hasn't played since Aug. 18. He's been a nice bench option for fantasy owners batting .272 with 15 HR and 41 RBI in just 195 at-bats.
Zach McAllister, SPHot8/25/2013 10:20:00 AM
Description: Indians starter Zach McAllister is 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA over his last three starts.
Insight: McAllister made two of those starts against the Twins and one against the Angels, so it's not like he dominated the best offensive clubs in the league. He's a serviceable fantasy arm, one that is 7-7 with a 3.51 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP and 79 K in 105 innings this season.
Carlos Santana, C8/25/2013 10:18:00 AM
Description: Indians Carlos Santana is 8-for-21 (.381) with two home runs, six walks and six RBI over his last six games.
Insight: He's still only batting .221 in August, however. The catcher has a .265 average, 31 doubles, 16 homers, 57 RBI and an .826 OPS on the year.
Jason Kipnis, 2B8/25/2013 10:17:00 AM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis snapped out of a 0-for-18 slump with two hits and a home run Saturday night.
Insight: Kipnis has struggled in August, hitting .253 with one home run and 22 K in 95 plate appearances, but he's still one of the best second basemen in fantasy.
Carlos Santana, C8/24/2013 11:52:00 AM
Description: Indians Carlos Santana is hitless in eight at-bats against Minnesota right-hander Liam Hendricks.
Insight: Santana should post his third .800 plus OPS season in four years with the Indians. Santana was hitless against Friday's starter Sam Deduno and rapped out a pair of singles and a walk so maybe he can overcome this matchup too.
Carlos Santana, C8/23/2013 11:59:00 AM
Description: Indians Carlos Santana is hitless in 11 at-bats against Minnesota right-hander Samuel Deduno.
Insight: Santana should post his third .800 plus OPS season in four years with the Indians, but this matchup isn't a good one and should be avoided.
Jason Giambi, 1B8/14/2013 6:24:00 PM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi hit a game-tying three-run homer in the eighth inning Wednesday afternoon against the Twins and went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs in the game.
Insight: In a part-time role as a pinch-hitter and player coach, Giambi has hit .190 with eight homers and 28 RBI in 147 at-bats. He now has 437 career dingers.
Michael Brantley, LF8/14/2013 6:21:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley drove in three runs and went 2-for-5 Wednesday against the Twins.
Insight: Brantley has 58 RBI and 57 runs in 115 games this season after producing 60 RBI and 63 runs in 149 games a year ago.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS8/14/2013 11:25:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is not in Wednesday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: Cabrera is struggling at the plate, batting .236 this season with a .681 OPS after posting a .270 BA last season with a .762 OPS. Hitless in his last four games, he can probably use the time off.
Carlos Santana, C8/13/2013 11:24:00 AM
Description: Indians Carlos Santana is hitless in nine at-bats against Minnesota right-hander Samuel Deduno.
Insight: Santana should post his third .800 plus OPS season in four years with the Indians, but this matchup isn't a good one and should be avoided..
Mark Reynolds, DH8/12/2013 8:30:00 PM
Description: The Indians have officially released infielder Mark Reynolds.
Insight: You know you're having a bad year when you lose your starting job to 42-year-old Jason Giambi. Reynolds (.215, 15 HR, 48 RBI) could have stayed with the team but he wasn't willing to accept a demotion to Triple-A. He shouldn't be on the market for very long.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SSCold8/11/2013 2:30:00 PM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was ejected from Sunday's game.
Insight: Cabrera argued balls and strikes in the second inning and home plate umpire Vic Carapazza heard enough. The Indians shortstop entered play Sunday hitting .189 over the last five weeks.
Scott Kazmir, SP8/10/2013 6:31:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Scott Kazmir is dealing with a dead arm, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: Carlos Carrasco will start Wednesday in place of Kazmir, and the lefty will get an extra 2-3 days off before making his next start. Kazmir has been a nice surprise for the Indians this year, going 7-5 with a 4.18 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in 114 innings, but he threw exactly 1 2/3 innings in the big leagues in 2011-12 due to arm issues.
Michael Brantley, LF8/10/2013 12:29:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley is a career .091 hitter (1-for-11) versus Los Angeles starter C.J. Wilson.
Insight: Brantley (.282, 8 HR, 54 RBI, 56 runs, 12 SB) is having a good season, but an favorable matchup which fantasy owners should avoid.
Michael Bourn, CF8/10/2013 12:25:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn is 6-for-10 with a 1.636 OPS versus Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson.
Insight: Bourn is a .276 hitter who steals bases, but also leads the league in caught stealing as he has for the past two years. He has limited fantasy value in net steal leagues, but at least for Saturday has a favorable matchup.
Mark Reynolds, DH8/8/2013 5:01:00 PM
Description: A Mark Reynolds reunion with the Orioles could be in the works. SOURCE: Jim Bowden, ESPN
Insight: Reynolds was designated for assignment earlier in the day and will probably be released. The Orioles don't have a legitimate DH (they've been using Henry Urrutia at that position) so Reynolds might be a decent fit. Twenty-eight of Reynolds' 196 career homers have come at Camden Yards.
Mark Reynolds, DH8/8/2013 12:02:00 PM
Description: Cleveland has designated corner infielder/DH Mark Reynolds for assignment.
Insight: Reynolds hasn't hit a home run since June 28th, which doesn't work when your batting average is hovering around the Mendoza line. The 30-year-old power hitter could accept a minor league assignment or he could ask to be released.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold8/8/2013 11:12:00 AM
Description: Odds are, you probably released Mark Reynolds to the waiver wire months ago. But if you decided to hold onto him, make sure he's not in your lineup Thursday against Detroit.
Insight: He's 1-for-14 with seven strikeouts versus Max Scherzer. Reynolds is no longer an everyday player for Cleveland, sharing reps with Nick Swisher at first base. He's only logged 27 at bats since the break, hitting .185 over that stretch. The bottom line is, if he isn't good enough to play for the Indians everyday, Reynolds definitely isn't good enough to still be on any fantasy teams.
Michael Bourn, CF8/8/2013 11:07:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn provided some heroics with an RBI double in the 14th inning Wednesday against Detroit. We wouldn't expect a repeat performance with Max Scherzer pitching on Thursday.
Insight: Bourn hasn't had much luck at all against the Tigers' Cy Young hopeful, collecting just three hits in 18 prior at bats. The speedy outfielder has struggled in the second half by hitting only .235 in 68 post All-Star at bats.
Carlos Santana, C8/8/2013 11:03:00 AM
Description: The Indians find themselves in a difficult position Thursday against Detroit. Yan Gomes caught all 14 innings in Wednesday night's loss but their other catcher Carlos Santana has been brutal against Tigers starter Max Scherzer.
Insight: Santana has just three hits against Scherzer in 25 at bats, though two of those hits went for home runs. Santanta, who played first base on Wednesday, is 2-for-13 in the series.
Nick Swisher, 1B8/8/2013 10:54:00 AM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher had a good game Wednesday (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and he might have an even better one Thursday versus Max Scherzer.
Insight: Swisher carries a .462 lifetime average against Scherzer with a homer and three RBI. Overall, Swisher (.245, 11 HR, 35 RBI) is hitting .271 in 48 at bats against the Tigers this season.
Danny Salazar, RP8/7/2013 9:28:00 PM
Description: After striking out Miguel Cabrera three times Wednesday, Indians pitching prospect Danny Salazar allowed a go-ahead two-run homer to Cabrera on the last pitch he threw to spoil a big night. Salazar struck out 10 batters over 7 2/3 innings in his second big league start, but Cabrera's blast made it 4-3 in the top of the eighth and prevented the 23-year-old from starting out 2-0.
Insight: Armed with 99-mph heat and some strong off-speed stuff, Salazar has fanned 17 batters with two walks in 13 2/3 innings over his first two major league starts. The righty posted a 2.71 ERA and a 129/24 K/BB in 93 innings in the minors this season and should be added in all leagues as he's likely to remain in the rotation in place of Corey Kluber, who is out 4-6 weeks with a sprained right middle finger.
Ryan Raburn, RF8/7/2013 6:39:00 PM
Description: Cleveland utility player Ryan Raburn has agreed to a two-year, $4.85 million contract extension.
Insight: Raburn has been a pleasant surprise for the Indians, bashing 13 HR in 66 games this season. He's getting the night off on Wednesday but he should be back in the lineup tomorrow.
Corey Kluber, SP8/7/2013 5:18:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Corey Kluber will miss 4-6 weeks with a sprained right middle finger, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
Insight: Kluber has posted a 1.98 ERA and 40 strikeouts over 41 innings in his last six starts, but he's in danger of missing the rest of the season. Teammate Zach McAllister missed six weeks earlier this season with the same injury. Kluber going on the DL means that rookie Danny Salazar, who dominated the Blue Jays last month in his big league debut, will get an extended look in the rotation.
Danny Salazar, RP8/6/2013 7:15:00 PM
Description: Indians pitching prospect Danny Salazar, who will be recalled Wednesday to start against the Detroit Tigers, is likely to remain in the rotation due to Corey Kluber's sprained middle finger.
Insight: Salazar dominated the Blue Jays in his big league debut on July 11 and has posted a 2.71 ERA and a 129/24 K/BB over 93 innings in the minors this season (33 2/3 IP with Double-A Akron and 59 1/3 with Triple-A Columbus). He should be added in all leagues, even with the Tigers on the schedule Wednesday. Kluber is expected to miss an extended period of time due to his injury.
Corey Kluber, SP8/6/2013 7:14:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Corey Kluber, who has posted a 1.98 ERA and 40 strikeouts over 41 innings in his last six starts, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right middle finger. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Kluber just threw 7 1/3 scoreless frames Monday against the Tigers, but he's in danger of missing the rest of the season due to the sprained middle finger. It's the same injury that kept teammate Zach McAllister out for six weeks this season. Kluber going on the DL means that rookie Danny Salazar, who dominated the Blue Jays last month in his big league debut, will get an extended look in the rotation.
Michael Brantley, LF8/6/2013 10:36:00 AM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley is a career .406 hitter versus Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander.
Insight: Brantley (.278, 7 HR, 53 RBI, 53 runs, 12 SB) is having a good season and a favorable matchup. He's also 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts against Verlander.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SSCold8/6/2013 10:32:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is a career .204 hitter versus Detroit ace Justin Verlander with 19 strikeouts in just 49 at-bats.
Insight: Cabrera is just 4-for-27 (.148) over his last seven games and this unfavorable matchup isn't likely to help his fantasy totals.
Chris Perez, RP8/5/2013 10:43:00 PM
Description: Chris Perez's outing against Detroit on Monday night was a disaster.
Insight: He let up four runs without recording an out. It was Perez's first blown save since May 18th against Seattle. Perez is a talented guy but he's prone to blowups and Monday night would certainly qualify as one of those.
Corey Kluber, SP8/5/2013 10:37:00 PM
Description: Cleveland righthander Corey Kluber held Detroit scoreless for 7 1/3 innings on Monday night.
Insight: Unfortunately, Chirs Perez had a meltdown in the ninth so Kluber was unable to pick up the victory. He's now gone four starts in a row without a decision. He'll be on the mound again Sunday versus the Angels.
Scott Kazmir, SP8/4/2013 6:15:00 PM
Description: Cleveland lefthander Scott Kazmir didn't allow a run in his six innings of work Sunday versus Miami.
Insight: Kazmir struggled in his previous outing (5 IP, 9 H, 4 ER against the White Sox) so fantasy owners have to be pretty pleased with this performance. Kazmir (7-4, 3.89 ERA) has allowed two hits or fewer in three of his last four starts.
Drew Stubbs, CF8/1/2013 8:53:00 PM
Description: Indians right fielder Drew Stubbs went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored Thursday against the White Sox.
Insight: Stubbs had not had a multi-hit game since July 6. He has never developed into the 20/40 threat he appeared to be in 2010 and 2011.
Carlos Santana, C8/1/2013 8:47:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana picked up three hits Thursday against the White Sox.
Insight: Santana is hitting .278 with 12 homers, 48 RBI, 48 runs and an .842 OPS. Those are strong fantasy numbers for a catcher, but the 27-year-old is capable of more if he puts it all together for a full season.
Justin Masterson, SPHot8/1/2013 3:07:00 PM
Description: Indians ace Justin Masterson ran his winning streak to three games in a row Thursday against the White Sox.
Insight: Masterson (6 2/3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 7 Ks) is scorching hot right now. Since the All-Star break, he's undefeated with a 0.84 ERA in three starts. If Masterson keeps this up, he could become the Tribe's first 20-game winner since Cliff Lee in 2008.
Ryan Raburn, 2B8/1/2013 3:05:00 PM
Description: Cleveland right fielder Ryan Raburn smacked two homers Thursday in a win over the White Sox.
Insight: For a platoon player, Raburn has held his own in fantasy leagues this season. He's now at 13 jacks for the season with an OPS of .961. For comparison, Mike Trout's OPS is .974. Sky would be the limit for this guy if he played everyday.
Michael Brantley, LF8/1/2013 11:36:00 AM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley hasn't had much success against White Sox lefty Chris Sale.
Insight: Not many players have but Brantley's struggles against Sale have been especially noteworthy. In 13 at bats, he's managed just two hits with five strikeouts. Brantley (.285, 7 HR, 52 RBI) is having a good season but we don't like this particular matchup. Sit him if you can afford to.
Jason Kipnis, 2B8/1/2013 10:55:00 AM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis will get the afternoon off Thursday against Chicago.
Insight: He's played every day since July 11th and manager Terry Francona thought it was time to give him a rest. Kipnis has been one of the better second basemen in baseball this season, hitting .292 with 21 steals and an .872 OPS.
Nick Swisher, 1B7/30/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher has gone just 1-for-12 (.083) with eight strikeouts against Chicago starter Jake Peavy.
Insight: Swisher owners have seen a significant drop off from last season's production level. He's batting .244 with 11 HR and 33 RBI after batting .272 with 24 HR and 93 RBI last season. This matchup isn't going to help those mediocre totals.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold7/30/2013 10:23:00 AM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B Mark Reynolds is a .150 hitter with 11 strikeouts in 20 career at-bats against White Sox starter Jake Peavy.
Insight: Reynolds had 11 home runs and hit .291 in his first 31 games this season, but he's had a total of four homers in 64 games since. He's probably hoping Peavy gets traded this morning. Reynolds can be cut in all formats.
Zach McAllister, SP7/29/2013 9:57:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Zach McAllister gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings Monday in a no decision versus the White Sox.
Insight: McAllister was making his second start since returning from his sprained right middle finger. He's 4-6 with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP this season.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP7/28/2013 7:24:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez two-hit the Texas Rangers over eight scoreless innings Sunday.
Insight: Jimenez is often shaky due to his high walk rate and his overall numbers still aren't great, but he has gone 8-3 with a 3.12 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP over his last 17 starts.
Justin Masterson, SPHot7/27/2013 10:10:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson outpitched Yu Darvish Saturday in a battle of righthanded aces.
Insight: Masterson (12-7, 3.42 ERA) surrendered just five hits in 7 2/3 shutout innings. He's been phenomenal over his past three outings, compiling a 1.27 ERA in 21 1/3 frames over that span.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS7/24/2013 9:55:00 PM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera plated three runs Wednesday against the Mariners.
Insight: He also scored four runs, his most in a game since April 17, 2010. Cabrera has followed up a 1-for-16 slump by going 4-for-8 in his last two appearances.
Michael Bourn, CF7/24/2013 9:41:00 PM
Description: Michael Bourn had a big game Wednesday against the Mariners.
Insight: The Cleveland center fielder bashed his first career grand slam in the fifth inning. He also contributed a bunt single and a stolen base. Bourn is hitting .292 this season, the second-highest average of his career. He's been especially dominant against lefthanders (.317 AVG in 82 at bats), which is unusual because he bats lefthanded.
Scott Kazmir, SPHot7/24/2013 9:39:00 PM
Description: Indians lefty Scott Kazmir ran his unbeaten streak to eight games Wednesday by picking up a win over Seattle.
Insight: Kazmir gave up just one hit in eight innings. The only run he surrendered was unearned. During his unbeaten streak, Kazmir has gone 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 47 2/3 innings.
Jason Kipnis, 2BHot7/21/2013 7:11:00 PM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis has homered in two straight games and is 9-for-16 with eight RBI, four walks and zero K over his last five games.
Insight: With a homer Sunday, Kipnis joined Mike Trout and Carlos Gomez as the only players with at least 15 homers and 20 steals this season. He has added 56 runs, 62 RBI, a .303 average and a .913 OPS.
Justin Masterson, SP7/21/2013 7:09:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Justin Masterson one-hit the Twins over seven innings Sunday.
Insight: Masterson (11-7, 3.60 ERA) didn't walk a batter and struck out eight while allowing one earned run. The right-hander walked nine batters over his last two starts of the first half and came into Sunday's start with a 3.59 BB/9.
Corey Kluber, SP7/21/2013 5:03:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Corey Kluber (hip, hamstring) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday to determine whether or not he'll be able to make his next start Friday, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: Kluber left Saturday's start with left hip and hamstring tightness, but he was feeling better Sunday and thinks he'll make his next start.
Michael Bourn, CF7/21/2013 1:52:00 PM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn is out for Sunday's game against the Twins.
Insight: No reason was given for his absence so it looks like it's just a day of rest. Usually a prodigious base stealer, Bourn is only on pace for 22 thefts in 2013. That would be a mild disappointment after two straight seasons of 40-plus steals.
Zach McAllister, SP7/19/2013 8:26:00 PM
Description: According to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, Indians manager Terry Francona said the team is optimistic righty Zach McAllister (finger) will be ready to return to the rotation Tuesday at Seattle.
Insight: McAllister (4-5, 3.43 ERA, 1.37 WHIP) will need to get through a bullpen session before he's cleared to start. He hasn't pitched in the big leagues since June 2 due to a sprained right middle finger.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS7/14/2013 9:29:00 PM
Description: Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (3-for-5, two RBI) had one of his best games of the year Sunday in a win over Kansas City.
Insight: Sunday was Cabrera's sixth three-hit game of the season. He's now hitting .258 since coming off the disabled list in late June.
Nick Swisher, 1B7/14/2013 10:29:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher has gone just 8-for-45 (.178) with 15 strikeouts against Kansas City starter James Shields.
Insight: Swisher has experienced a dropoff in HR/FB from 15.4 percent to 11.5 percent since last season, but with a 27 percent line-drive rate and a 5.1 percent infield popup rate, both career bests, Swisher should have a much higher BABIP than .296. His luck should turn around in the second half, but not Sunday against Shields.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold7/14/2013 12:32:00 AM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B Mark Reynolds is a .125 hitter with nine strikeouts in 16 career at-bats against Royals starter James Shields.
Insight: Reynolds had 11 home runs and hit .291 in his first 31 games this season, but he's had a total of four homers while batting .177 in 58 games since. He can be cut in all formats.
Scott Kazmir, SP7/13/2013 10:36:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Scott Kazmir defeated the Royals by going 6 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on four hits Saturday.
Insight: Kazmir has an ugly 4.60 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP this season, but he has a 2.32 ERA and a 25/7 K/BB in 31 innings over his last five starts.
Michael Brantley, LF7/13/2013 10:08:00 AM
Description: Indians outfielder Michael Brantley is just 1-for-12 (.083) against Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Brantley is batting .325 in 11 July games with a .926 OPS, but went hitless in Friday night's favorable matchup. Avoid him on Saturday.
Nick Swisher, 1B7/13/2013 10:04:00 AM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher is a career .382 hitter with eight extra-base hits and a 1.215 OPS in 34 at-bats against Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Swisher has a modest four-game hit streak heading into this favorable matchup and could be worth a flier.
Corey Kluber, SPHot7/12/2013 10:45:00 PM
Description: Cleveland righthander Corey Kluber turned in another great outing Friday against the Royals.
Insight: Just five days after notching ten strikeouts against the Tigers, Kluber dominated Kansas City for 7 2/3 innings, striking out eight without giving up a run. He heads into the break with a 3.88 ERA in 95 innings this season.
Michael Brantley, LFHot7/12/2013 9:59:00 AM
Description: Indians outfielder Michael Brantley is a stunning 9-for-14 (.643) against Royals starter Bruce Chen.
Insight: Brantley is batting .361 in 10 July games with a 1.021 OPS. Hot batter plus favorable matchup equals must start.
Danny Salazar, RP7/11/2013 7:44:00 PM
Description: Indians pitching prospect Danny Salazar allowed one run on two hits and struck out seven over six innings to win his major league debut Thursday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: MLB.com ranked Salazar as Cleveland's No. 8 prospect this past spring. The 23-year-old had a 3.08 ERA and a 100/23 K/BB in 76 innings this season with Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus prior to his callup. He's likely to be in the rotation after the All-Star break, so he should be added in most leagues.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS7/11/2013 7:39:00 PM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Thursday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Cabrera went 0-for-20 from July 4-9, but he has gone 3-for-8 with two RBI in his last two games. The Indians shortstop is hitting .251 with seven home runs and five steals this season.
Drew Stubbs, CF7/11/2013 11:27:00 AM
Description: Indians right fielder Drew Stubbs won't get a chance against Toronto starter R.A. Dickey on Thursday. That's probably for the best.
Insight: Stubbs has managed just two hits in 12 at bats versus the righthanded knuckleballer. Once a perennial threat for 20 homers and 20 stolen bases, Stubbs is only on pace for 12 jacks and 18 steals in 2013.
Nick Swisher, 1B7/11/2013 11:24:00 AM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher has been terrible against Blue Jays righthander R.A. Dickey in 15 previous at bats (just two hits).
Insight: That's probably why he's not in the lineup on Thursday. Instead, power-hitting Mark Reynolds will get the start at first base.
Michael Bourn, CF7/10/2013 10:33:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn snapped out of a 5-for-33 slump (.152) with three hits Wednesday against Toronto.
Insight: Bourn stole his 13th base of the season Wednesday. The center fielder has only attempted 19 steals this year, including just nine over his last 38 games.
Zach McAllister, SP7/10/2013 8:13:00 PM
Description: According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Indians righty Zach McAllister (finger) is expected to start his minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus Friday.
Insight: McAllister (4-5, 3.43 ERA, 1.37 WHIP) hasn't pitched since June 2 due to a sprained right middle finger. He'll make a second rehab start next week with Double-A Akron before returning from the DL.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP7/9/2013 10:11:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez didn't allow a run Tuesday for the first time since June 1.
Insight: Jimenez gave up five hits (three doubles) and walked two over six scoreless innings. The right-hander actually is 7-2 with a 3.13 ERA over his last 14 starts after starting out 0-2 with a 10.06 ERA. However, Tuesday's outing was also his longest since June 1.
Danny Salazar, RP7/9/2013 7:59:00 PM
Description: Indians pitching prospect Danny Salazar will make his big league debut Thursday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Insight: MLB.com ranked Salazar as Cleveland's No. 8 prospect this past spring. The 23-year-old has a 3.08 ERA and a 100/23 K/BB in 76 innings this season with Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus. Owners in 12-team mixed leagues can give him a shot.
Mark Reynolds, DH7/9/2013 9:18:00 AM
Description: A second consecutive bad matchup for Cleveland 1B/3B Mark Reynolds. He is 1-for-9 with eight strikeouts versus Blue Jays starter Josh Johnson.
Insight: Reynolds overcame a hitless hitstory on Monday with a couple of singles and now faces a matchup where he has trouble just putting the ball in play. Despite yesterday's success it's still probably better if you avoid this matchup.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold7/8/2013 9:51:00 AM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B Mark Reynolds is hitless in 11 at-bats versus Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer with six strikeouts.
Insight: Reynolds strikes out a lot and Scherzer has fanned 139 batters in just 116 2/3 IP. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Nick Swisher, 1B7/8/2013 9:48:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is 5-for-10 with a couple of extra base hits and a 1.415 OPS versus Detroit ace Max Scherzer.
Insight: Scherzer is having a special season in 2013, so it's possible that this favorable matchup could be negated by a "career year." Swisher is 3-for-8 with a home run over the first three games of the series.
Corey Kluber, SP7/7/2013 6:02:00 PM
Description: Indians pitcher Corey Kluber struck out 10 batters and allowed two runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings Sunday versus Detroit.
Insight: Kluber went 1-1 with a 7.47 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP over his previous three starts. He has an 86/19 K/BB in 87 1/3 innings this season, but he also has a 4.23 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.
Carlos Santana, CCold7/7/2013 6:00:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer Sunday against the Tigers.
Insight: Santana came in with poor career numbers against Detroit starter Doug Fister, but he greeted the right-hander with a homer in the first inning Sunday. The backstop is hitting just .190 with one home run over his last 17 games.
Michael Brantley, LF7/7/2013 5:52:00 PM
Description: Indians left fielder Michael Brantley went 3-for-4 with a double, two homers, five RBI and three runs Sunday against the Tigers.
Insight: With the two longballs Sunday, Brantley has seven on the year, tying a career high. He also has driven in 45 runs in 307 at-bats this season after putting up a career-high 60 RBI in 552 at-bats last year.
Carlos Santana, C7/7/2013 11:29:00 AM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana should be avoided at all costs Sunday against the Tigers.
Insight: That's because he's facing a tough matchup versus Doug Fister (4-for-24 with five strikeouts). Fister is 5-3 with a 2.24 ERA in 12 career starts against the Indians.
Carlos Carrasco, SP7/7/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: Cleveland righthander Carlos Carrasco was shipped back to Triple-A Columbus after Saturday's start against Detroit.
Insight: He's winless in six starts this season. Injuries to Brett Myers and Zach McAllister have forced the Indians to get creative with their starting rotation. Carrasco and Trevor Bauer have been bouncing around between Triple-A and the majors all year and they probably will be all season.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold7/6/2013 1:16:00 PM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B Mark Reynolds is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's Cleveland/Detroit matchup.
Insight: Reynolds is slumping of late going 1-for-21 over the past seven games. Jason Giambi will serve as the DH against the Tigers on Saturday.
Justin Masterson, SP7/5/2013 10:28:00 PM
Description: Cleveland righthander Justin Masterson was beat up on Friday night, giving up seven hits and six earned runs over 4 2/3 innings.
Insight: Masterson's drive for a spot on the All-Star roster spot, he has 10 wins this season, took a hit. He still leads the AL in starts and innings pitched and is striking out more than a batter an inning.
Luis Valbuena, SS7/5/2013 2:54:00 PM
Description: Cubs third baseman Luis Valbuena is not is Friday's lineup versus the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Insight: Valbuena got off to an early quick start, with five homers and an .800-plus OPS thru May, but June saw his numbers falter as he batted .190 with zero homers and a .563 OPS. His replacement, Cody Ransom has hit eight home runs in just 96 at-bats.
Carlos Santana, C7/5/2013 10:28:00 AM
Description: Indians catcher Carlos Santana is a solid 9-for-28 (.321) with three homers and a 1.066 OPS versus Detroit starter Rick Porcello.
Insight: After a strong April, Santana's numbers have slipped considerably and he nicked up. Perhaps this matchup will perk up his bat which has only produced a .223 batting average with a .699 OPS since May 1.
Drew Stubbs, CF7/4/2013 5:41:00 PM
Description: Indians outfielder Drew Stubbs went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI Thursday at Kansas City.
Insight: Stubbs has driven in 34 runs mostly out of the nine-hole over 80 games in his first year in Cleveland after averaging 42 RBI and 147 games with the Reds over the last two years, but he's only hitting .242 and has just eight steals.
Mike Aviles, SS7/4/2013 12:10:00 PM
Description: Indians infielder Mike Aviles is starting at shortstop Thursday with Asdrubal Cabrera at DH.
Insight: Aviles is 7-for-21 (.333) with two homers against Royals starter James Shields.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold7/4/2013 10:43:00 AM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B Mark Reynolds is an abysmal 2-for-13 with eight K against Royals starter James Shields.
Insight: Reynolds has hit just two home runs and is batting .183 with 46 strikeouts over his last 30 games. He can be dropped in all formats until further notice.
Nick Swisher, 1BHot7/4/2013 10:41:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher has gone just 8-for-45 with 15 strikeouts against Kansas City starter James Shields.
Insight: Swisher is 7-for-19 with five walks over his last five games and he does have three homers and 10 RBI against Shields, but he his extended sample size against the right-hander suggests he won't do much Thursday.
Jason Kipnis, 2BHot7/4/2013 10:02:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is batting .479 with four homers, 20 RBI and a 1.516 OPS during his 14-game hitting streak.
Insight: Kipnis actually has hit safely in 24 of his last 25 games and batted .438 with 28 RBI in that span. He has overtaken Robinson Cano as the No. 1 second baseman in fantasy.
Scott Kazmir, SP7/3/2013 6:18:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Scott Kazmir will start Wednesday against the Royals.
Insight: Kazmir left his last start on July 26 with back spasms. The lefty has allowed just one earned run on six hits and posted an 11/1 K/BB in 14 innings over his last two starts.
Michael Bourn, CF7/3/2013 4:51:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn will start Wednesday after coming off the paternity leave list.
Insight: Bourn hasn't played since Sunday. He's hitting .299 with two homers, 33 runs and 11 steals in 231 at-bats this year.
Nick Swisher, 1BHot7/3/2013 10:05:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is 13-for-31 (.419) with a pair of home runs and a 1.325 OPS in his matchups against Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Swisher has seven hits in his last 15 at-bats to raise his average to .243. He's hit eight home runs, but fantasy owners are expecting more than that after averaging 25.8 HR per season over the past eight years. This matchup should continue his hot streak.
Jason Giambi, 1B7/3/2013 10:01:00 AM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi is 4-for-10 with a pair of home runs versus Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie and a 1.400 OPS.
Insight: Giambi is coming off a two-hit game on Tuesday and should definitely get a chance to stay hot in theis favorable Wednesday matchup.
Carlos Carrasco, SP7/2/2013 8:01:00 PM
Description: Indians righthander Carlos Carrasco will make the start Saturday against the Tigers. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: He's been bouncing between the majors and Triple-A all season. Until Carrasco (0-3, 8.17 ERA) can carve out a permanent role for himself in the Indians' rotation, he won't be a fantasy option.
Jason Kipnis, 2BHot7/1/2013 9:22:00 AM
Description: With a .419 average, 1.216 OPS, four homers, 25 RBI, 17 runs and nine steals, Indians 2B Jason Kipnis ranked as the No. 1 fantasy player for the month of June.

Justin Masterson, SP6/30/2013 6:25:00 PM
Description: Cleveland righthander Justin Masterson reached double-digit victories with his win over the White Sox on Sunday.
Insight: Masterson blanked the Chi Sox for his third shutout of the season, picking up eight strikeouts in the process. So far this year, he's 10-6 with a 3.48 ERA and 125 K's in 18 starts. If that isn't enough for Masterson to earn his first All-Star invite we don't know what is.
Michael Bourn, CF6/30/2013 1:35:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn has been placed on the paternity leave list.
Insight: Bourn went 1-for-15 in the first three games of Cleveland's series at Baltimore during the week, but he is 5-for-13 (.385) over his last three games and 18-for-54 (.333) in his last 13. He should be back in the lineup in a few days; for now Drew Stubbs will serve as the center fielder.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP6/29/2013 9:24:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez gave up nine hits and three runs and walked four over five innings Saturday at Chicago.
Insight: Jimenez looked to be turning a corner when he went 4-1 with a 2.74 ERA and a 3.37 BB/9 from April 29 to June 1, but he has averaged just 4.8 innings per start and walked 6.4 batters per nine innings over his last five outings.

Insight: Kipnis is batting .500 with eight doubles, a triple, three homers, 17 RBI, a 7/12 K/BB and four steals during his 12-game hitting streak. He's now batting .299 with 12 homers and 19 steals this season.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS6/29/2013 2:08:00 PM

Insight: Cabrera is batting .264 with five homers, 25 RBI this season. He'll need a big second half to reach the totals he produced over the past two seasons.
Jason Kipnis, 2BHot6/28/2013 10:28:00 PM
Description: Tribe second baseman Jason Kipnis was an on base machine Friday against the White Sox.
Insight: Kipnis reached base six out of seven times in the first game of the double header (three doubles, three walks and four runs scored). He's on an 11-game hitting streak (.514 AVG over that span).
Carlos Carrasco, SP6/28/2013 8:32:00 PM
Description: The Indians have called up starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco from Triple-A Columbus.
Insight: Carrasco will pitch in Game 2 of Friday night's doubleheader versus the White Sox. Trevor Bauer got lit up in the first game of the double dip (6 H, 5 ER in just 2/3 of an inning) so Terry Francona will be counting on Carrasco to pitch deep into the game.
Drew Stubbs, CF6/28/2013 2:54:00 PM
Description: Indians outfielder Drew Stubbs will start in center field and leadoff on Friday versus the Chicago White Sox in the first game of a doubleheader.
Insight: Stubbs has batted mostly in the nine hole, but will get a chance to show his speed in the opener with Michael Bourn sitting this one out. Stubbs is batting .242 with six homers, 26 RBI and eight steals this season and has never fulfilled the promise of his 2010 season.
Michael Bourn, CF6/28/2013 2:52:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn is not in Friday night's starting lineup. Drew Stubbs will start in center field and lead off.
Insight: Bourn was 3-for-20 in the just completed four-game series with Baltimore. His batting average is still near the .300 mark, but we exect more than what he's giving up this season (30 runs, 11 steals in 54 games).
Carlos Santana, C6/28/2013 2:48:00 PM
Description: Indians catcher Carlos Santana is not in the lineup Friday
Insight: Santana's absence is likely related to the hard foul ball he took off his left knee Tuesday which forced him out of Wednesday's lineup as well. He playing well this season, batting .269 with 10 HR, 32 RBI and an .842 OPS.

Chris Perez, RP6/27/2013 4:34:00 PM

Insight: Perez hasn't pitched since May 26 due to right shoulder soreness. He would have returned sooner but after he allowed three homers in his second rehab appearance the team decided to keep him on the DL for a few more appearances. He should regain the closer role from Vinnie Pestano immediately.

Insight: Kipnis was hitting .189 on May 1, but he has slowly built up his average to .288. He has hit safely in 18 of the last 19 games and is batting .550 with four doubles, a triple, two homers, 10 RBI and five walks over his last six games.

Scott Kazmir, SP6/26/2013 10:13:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Scott Kazmir took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning and had just 78 pitches going into the eighth Wednesday against the Orioles, but he had to exit the game before the start of the frame due to a physical ailment.
Insight: Kazmir appeared to have a back or oblique issue. The left-hander has allowed just six hits and one earned run with an 11/1 K/BB in 14 innings over his last two starts.

Carlos Santana, C6/26/2013 4:52:00 PM
Description: Indians catcher Carlos Santana is not in the lineup Wednesday, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
Insight: It's the first time he hasn't been in the lineup since May 9. Santana's absence is likely related to the hard foul ball he took off his left knee Tuesday.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS6/26/2013 12:04:00 PM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is expected to come off the disabled list Wednesday. He's been sidelined by a strained right quadriceps.
Insight: Cabrera (.254, 5 HR, 25 RBI) strained his quad on June 3. The shortstop didn't need a rehab stint after getting through his baseball activities without issue. He'll face Baltimore's Jason Hammel and he's 2-for-6 with a home run against the Orioles' right-hander.
Justin Masterson, SP6/25/2013 10:08:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Justin Masterson took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh Tuesday at Baltimore but served up two homers and allowed five runs in the frame.

Description: Indians outfielder Ryan Raburn it not only hitless in eight at-bats versus Baltimore starter Chris Tillman, but he's gone six games without a hit.
Insight: Raburn was doing solid work when he got the opportunity early on, but lately he's become a liability and he should not be in any fantasy lineups.
Michael Brantley, LF6/24/2013 10:44:00 PM
Description: Indians left fielder Michael Brantley swatted his fifth homer Monday in a 5-2 win over Baltimore.
Insight: It's Brantley's third home run in his last five games. Before this power surge began, Brantley only had two long balls in his first 246 at bats. He's on pace for 80 RBI, which is 20 more than he had last season.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS6/24/2013 6:45:00 PM
Description: MLB.com's Jordan Bastian heard from Indians manager Terry Francona that shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is close to being activated from the disabled list.
Insight: Cabrera (.254, 5 HR, 25 RBI) strained his quad earlier this month. Mike Aviles (.260, 4 HR, 23 RBI) has been getting most of the starts at shortstop in his place.
Brett Myers, SP6/23/2013 10:33:00 PM
Description: Cleveland right-hander Brett Myers (elbow) will pitch out of the bullpen when he returns from the disabled list.
Insight: Myers was placed on the DL on April 21 with a mild tear of his UCL and opted for rehab instead of Tommy John surgery. Myers hasn't been effective as a starter since 2010 anyway, so fantasy owners won't be hurt by this decision. He can be dropped in all leagues.
Chris Perez, RPCold6/23/2013 10:30:00 PM
Description: Indians closer Chris Perez (shoulder) is expected to be activated this week, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
Insight: Perez will throw a rehab game Tuesday or Wednesday before being activated from the DL. The closer hasn't pitched since May 26 due to right shoulder soreness. Carlos Carrasco, SP6/23/2013 6:50:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco gave up three earned runs on six hits and walked four over 4 2/3 innings Sunday against the Twins.

Insight: That includes three hits in each of the last two days. The outfielder is having a solid season, hitting .310 with 29 runs in 203 at-bats, but he only has attempted 15 steals and stolen 11.
Nick Swisher, 1B6/23/2013 11:14:00 AM
Description: After missing the past six games with a sore shoulder, Indians first baseman Nick Swisher will return to the starting lineup Sunday against Minnesota.
Insight: Swisher hasn't exactly been tearing the cover off the ball this season (.237, 7 HR, 24 RBI in 61 games) but he's still somebody for fantasy owners to keep an eye on.
Jason Kipnis, 2B6/23/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis just missed the cycle Saturday against Minnesota.
Insight: All he needed was a home run. The last player in MLB to hit for the cycle was Mike Trout a little over a month ago. Kipnis (.275, 9 HR, 40 RBI) has driven in six runs over his last four games.
Scott Kazmir, SP6/21/2013 9:54:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Scott Kazmir allowed a solo homer but nothing else over seven innings Friday to beat the Twins.
Insight: Kazmir didn't walk a batter and struck out seven, but let's not get too excited. He still has a 5.37 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP, and dominating the light-hitting Twins isn't exactly a major accomplishment.
Jason Kipnis, 2B6/21/2013 9:49:00 PM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis had a two-run single and a sacrifice fly Friday against the Twins.
Insight: Kipnis was batting .189 after a game on May 1, but he is 51-for-169 (.302) with 12 doubles, two triples, eight homers, 27 runs and 11 steals in his last 44 games. Kudos to you if you bought low following his struggles in April.

Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (quad) took grounders and hit on the field Friday for the first time since suffering a right quad strain, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.

Zach McAllister, SP6/21/2013 4:15:00 PM
Description: According to MLB.com, Indians starter Zach McAllister played catch the last couple of days. The righty has been on the DL since June 8 with a strained right middle finger.
Insight: McAllister cannot throw a curveball yet, so he's limited to fastballs. He won't return for another few weeks.
Trevor Crowe, CF6/21/2013 9:23:00 AM
Description: Houston outfielder Trevor Crowe was placed on the disabled list due to an injured shoulder.
Insight: Crowe is only a part-time outfielder with little fantasy value as he's batting .200 with a .568 OPS. The recently activated Justin Maxwell should get some of the at-bats as will Marc Krauss, who was called up on Thursday from Oklahoma City.
Michael Brantley, LF6/19/2013 10:22:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley crushed two homers Wednesday in a win over Kansas City.
Insight: Brantley entered the game with just two homers in his previous 246 at bats. All of his home runs this year have come against righthanded pitching.

Description: Indians closer Chris Perez (shoulder) will not return from the DL Friday as originally planned, according to Nick Camino of Newsradio WTAM 1100.

Chris Perez, RPCold6/18/2013 9:36:00 PM
Description: Chris Perez got rocked in a rehab outing for Double-A Akron on Tuesday.
Insight: He surrendered five runs in one inning. Three of the five hits he allowed were home runs. The Indians were planning to activate Perez from the disabled list on Friday but now they might be having second thoughts.
Carlos Santana, C6/18/2013 10:21:00 AM
Description: Indians catcher Carlos Santana has hit two homers over his last three games.
Insight: Santana is having a strong month of June, hitting .296 with nine RBI, an .867 OPS and an 8/6 K/BB in 15 games, after batting .200 with 28 strikeouts in May.
Carlos Carrasco, SP6/17/2013 10:28:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco was dominant in his return from a suspension.
Insight: Carrasco almost cut his ERA in half Monday (15.26 to 8.40) by giving up one run in seven innings. The 90-pitch performance was Carrasco's longest outing of the season.
Nick Swisher, 1B6/17/2013 7:07:00 PM
Description: Cleveland first baseman/right fielder Nick Swisher was recently given a cortisone shot in his left shoulder.
Insight: According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the earliest Swisher would be able to return to the lineup is Friday against the Twins. This injury could land Swisher (.237, 7 HR, 24 RBI) on the DL.
Chris Perez, RP6/17/2013 5:40:00 PM
Description: According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Indians plan to activate closer Chris Perez from the DL on Friday.
Insight: Perez (4.32 ERA, six saves) suffered a shoulder injury against the Red Sox a little less than a month ago. Vinnie Pestano stands to lose some of his fantasy value when Perez returns.
Jason Giambi, 1BCold6/17/2013 9:42:00 AM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi is hitless in 13 tries versus Royals starter James Shields and hitless in his last four games (nine at-bats).
Insight: If that doesn't scream avoid this matchup then nothing will. Gioambi is batting .179 this season, but does have six home runs in 84 at-bats.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold6/17/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B Mark Reynolds is 1-for-10 with six strikeouts against Kansas City starter james Shields.
Insight: Reynolds has one homer in his last 15 games and just one hit in his last 14 at-bats, so avoidance is best.
Corey Kluber, SPHot6/16/2013 7:32:00 PM
Description: Cleveland righthander Corey Kluber announced his presence with a stunning performance Sunday against Washington.
Insight: Kluber scattered seven hits over eight shutout frames. He finished with eight strikeouts and didn't walk any of the 30 batters he faced. If Kluber (0.56 ERA in his last two starts) wasn't on your radar before, he should be now.
Nick Swisher, 1BCold6/16/2013 2:19:00 PM

Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher will rest Sunday against the Nationals.

Michael Bourn, CFCold6/16/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn is 2-for-13 with six strikeouts against Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg.
Insight: Strasburg will return from the DL Sunday to start against Cleveland. Bourn is hitting .192 (5-for-26) with eight K over his last six games, and facing Strasburg won't help him break out of that slump.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold6/15/2013 10:32:00 PM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B Mark Reynolds went 1-for-3 with a solo homer, a walk and two strikeouts Saturday against the Nationals.
Insight: Reynolds had not homered in 13 straight games and came in hitting .174 with two homers and 43 strikeouts in 115 at-bats over his last 33 games.
Scott Kazmir, SP6/15/2013 10:31:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Scott Kazmir gave up three homers and five earned runs while walking four batters in 2 2/3 innings Saturday against Washington.
Insight: After throwing just 1 2/3 innings in the big leagues in 2011-12, Kazmir has proven he is the same pitcher he was back in 2010. He has a 5.89 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP after 11 starts and can be dropped in all leagues.
Chris Perez, RP6/15/2013 5:32:00 PM
Description: Indians closer Chris Perez (shoulder) will throw one inning Sunday in a minor league rehab game, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Drew Stubbs, CF6/14/2013 10:10:00 AM
Description: Indians outfielder Drew Stubbs is hitless in nine at-bats versus Nationals ace Gio Gonzalez.
Insight: Stubbs has done little this season, hitting .235 with 68 strikeouts in 204 at-bats, and this matchup isn't likely to help. He's got 20-30 potential, but hasn't produced at that level in a couple of seasons.
Ryan Raburn, 2B6/14/2013 10:06:00 AM
Description: Indians outfielder Ryan Raburn should get a start against Washington left-hander Gio Gonzalez as he's a .545 hitter (6-for-11) with a pair of home runs and a 1.727 OPS.
Insight: Raburn is doing solid work when he gets the opportunity, batting .288 with seven homers, 20 RBI and 16 runs scored. He is worth a one-day flier.
Jason Kipnis, 2B6/13/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis went 3-for-5 with a solo homer Wednesday night versus Texas.
Insight: Kipnis is hitting .393 with five RBI over his last seven games. Slowly but surely, he's getting his batting average up. He's hitting .258 with nine home runs, 31 RBI, 32 runs and 14 steals.

Description: Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez won his fifth game of the season Wednesday with five innings of one-run ball against the Texas Rangers.
Insight: Jimenez was wild as usual, walking four batters, but he didn't fold when he got into a jam. The right-hander is 5-2 with a 3.02 ERA over his last nine starts. While his next start will come against Kansas City, it will still be a tough test for Jimenez with the game taking place at Progressive Field; he is 2-3 with a 7.53 ERA in six starts there.
Grady Sizemore, CF6/12/2013 9:00:00 PM
Description: Minnesota could be interested in signing free agent outfielder Grady Sizemore. SOURCE: Nick Camino, WTAM 1100
Insight: Sizemore hasn't played in the big leagues since 2011. He used to be a 30/30 threat but now the best he could hope for is a spot at the end of someone's bench.
Corey Kluber, SP6/11/2013 10:57:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Corey Kluber threw the best game of his career Tuesday against Texas.
Insight: Kluber took a shutout into the eighth inning and ended up allowing one run on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts in eight frames. The right-hander lowered his ERA from 4.56 to 4.08.

Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B6/10/2013 1:40:00 PM
Description: Indians third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall has been pounding the ball since being demoted to Triple-A Columbus in mid-May.
Insight: Chisenhall, a former first-round draft pick, is batting .393 with six homers, 22 RBI and a 1.190 OPS in 84 at-bats. The 24-year-old is likely to get a call up at some point, but with Mark Reynolds at third base and Nick Swisher at first, there isn't a spot for him to get enough bats to be fantasy worthy.
Zach McAllister, SP6/9/2013 12:16:00 PM
Description: According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Indians starter Zach McAllister will miss between two and four weeks as he recovers from a sprained finger.
Insight: Manager Terry Francona believes McAllister suffered the injury by gripping his curve ball too hard. We'll see if McAllister (4-5, 3.43 ERA) alters his approach when he returns to the mound.
Carlos Carrasco, SP6/9/2013 11:20:00 AM
Description: Indians starter Carlos Carrasco has dropped his appeal and will begin serving his eight-game suspension. SOURCE: Bob Nightengale, USA Today

Zach McAllister, SP6/8/2013 3:48:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Zach McAllister has been placed on the DL.

Justin Masterson, SP6/8/2013 12:40:00 PM
Description: Cleveland righty Justin Masterson has been scratched from his Saturday start. Carlos Carrasco will start instead.

Carlos Santana, C6/8/2013 10:26:00 AM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana is 9-for-27 (.333) with three long balls and a 1.083 OPS against Tigers starter Rick Porcello.
Insight: Santana has put together a solid season (.278, 8 HR, 24 RBI, 32 runs), but most of the damage was done in April and not May. He's just 1-for-10 over his last three games which could negate this favorable matchup.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP6/7/2013 10:03:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez went eight innings in his last start, but he allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits with three walks in three innings Friday night.

Jason Kipnis, 2B6/7/2013 12:07:00 PM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis has struck out in almost half his at-bats versus Detroit ace Justin Verlander and has two hits in 15 at-bats (.133).
Insight: He's still not batting for a high average, but with eight home runs, 27 RBI and 29 runs in 50 games, Kipnis is producing decently. This matchup, however, should be avoided.
Michael Brantley, LF6/7/2013 12:01:00 PM
Description: Indians left fielder Michael Brantley is the rare hitter who has success against Detroit ace Justin Verlander batting .448 for his career (13-for-29).
Insight: Brantley continues to provid what is expected from him - a solid batting average (.297) with some runs (27) and RBIs (26), but little power or speed (2 HR, 4 SB). This matchup is a good one for Brantley.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold6/5/2013 7:50:00 PM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B Mark Reynolds is hitting .173 with 27 strikeouts over his last 23 games.

Carlos Santana, C6/5/2013 11:22:00 AM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana is not in Wednesday afternoon's lineup against the Yankees. No injury, just the normal day game after a night game rest for the catcher.
Insight: Santana has put together a solid season (.285, 8 HR, 24 RBI, 32 runs), but most of the damage was done in April and not May.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS6/5/2013 11:18:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera strained his quad Monday against the New York Yankees and was put on the 15-day disabled list, but manager Terry Francona thought he would likely be out longer - 3-4 weeks, according to a Cleveland Plain Dealer report.
Insight: Cabrera was hitting .254, with 5 HR and 25 RBI. Mike Aviles figures to get most of the playing time at shortstop. Aviles would be a short-term answer only.
Michael Brantley, LF6/5/2013 10:00:00 AM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley is hitless in seven at-bats against Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia with five strikeouts.
Insight: Brantley (.298, 2 HR, 26 RBI) is off to a fine start, but has struggled of late and he obviously doesn't see the ball well against Sabathia. This matchup is unfavorable and should be avoided.
Nick Swisher, 1B6/5/2013 9:45:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is 8-for-23 (.348) in his matchups with Yankees left-hander C.C. Sabathia.
Insight: After a strong start, Swisher has fallen back and has just seven hits in his last 30 at-bats and an ugly .650 OPS since returning from paternity leave. Those late-night feedings could be effecting his swing.

Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera strained his quad Monday against the New York Yankees and is expected to end up on the disabled list.
Insight: Cabrera (.254, 5 HR, 25 RBI) exited in the fifth inning. Mike Aviles figures to get most of the playing time at shortstop. Aviles would be a short-term answer only.

Insight: Cabrera (.254, 5 HR, 25 RBI) exited in the fifth inning. Jason Kipnis is now in the game at second base with Mike Aviles filling in at shortstop.
Zach McAllister, SP6/3/2013 8:50:00 PM
Description: Cleveland righthander Zach McAllister is battling a finger issue and will have his next start pushed back. SOURCE: Nick Camino, WTAM 1100
Insight: McAllister's start against Tampa Bay on Sunday was his shortest outing of the season (just 4 1/3 IP). His last win came on May 23rd against the Red Sox.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold6/2/2013 10:06:00 AM
Description: After hitting just .208 with 34 strikeouts in May and sitting out Saturday, Cleveland slugger Mark Reynolds will face Jeremy Hellickson of the Rays Sunday, who he has had trouble against in the past.
Insight: Reynolds has 13 homers and 41 RBI, but his average is down to .250. He is just 3-for-18 (.167) against Hellickson, so Sunday could be a tough day.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS6/1/2013 7:05:00 PM
Description: Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera hit his fifth homer of the season Saturday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Cabrera appeared to be breaking out in late May, but he's hitting .214 (6-for-28) with 11 strikeouts in his last seven games.
Carlos Santana, CCold6/1/2013 7:01:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana hit .200 in May and went 0-for-4 Saturday against the Rays.
Insight: Santana batted .389 with five homers and a 14/12 K/BB in 20 games in April, but struck out 28 times in 29 games last month. Hopefully, June will be a better month for the catcher.
Jason Giambi, 1B6/1/2013 7:00:00 PM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi has homered in his last three games.
Insight: Those games have come across a span of six days. The veteran has five home runs this season but is hitting .203 in a part-time role.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP6/1/2013 6:52:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez continued his turnaround with eight scoreless innings against the Rays Saturday afternoon.
Insight: Jimenez struck out seven, walked just one and allowed four hits. The right-hander still has a 4.83 ERA, but he is 4-1 with a 2.74 ERA and a 3.37 BB/9 over his last seven starts. That includes a four-inning, six-run effort against Detroit on May 22. Unfortunately, he'll face the Tigers again in his next start for the third time in his last five turns.
Mark Reynolds, DH6/1/2013 12:45:00 PM
Description: Cleveland slugger Mark Reynolds is not in Saturday's starting lineup against Tampa Bay.
Insight: After a fast start, Reynolds (.250, 13 HR, 41 RBI) has hit just one home run over the past two weeks. He can probably use the day off.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/31/2013 10:06:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is just 1-for-10 in his matchups with Tampa Bay left-hander Matt Moore.
Insight: Swisher is hitting .278 with seven homers and 20 RBI, but was just 4-for-16 in the four-game set with Cincinnati. Avoid this matchup.
Ryan Raburn, 2B5/30/2013 9:58:00 PM
Description: Indians outfielder Ryan Raburn had to leave Thursday night's game because of a leg cramp. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: It's nothing serious. Drew Stubbs has come on to take Raburn's place in right field.
Carlos Carrasco, SP5/29/2013 6:32:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco has a 1.85 ERA and a 46/11 K/BB in 43 2/3 innings with Triple-A Columbus.
Insight: Carrasco is a former "Baseball America" top-100 prospect who possesses a mid-90s fastball, but he had Tommy John surgery in September 2011 and missed all of 2012. The right-hander has to serve an eight-game suspension in the majors for hitting Kevin Youkilis on April 9, so the team has been reluctant to call him up and play with 24 players for eight games.
Jason Giambi, 1B5/29/2013 3:28:00 PM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi will get the start on Wednesday at DH against Bronson Arroyo and the Reds.
Insight: Giambi is a career .333 hitter with three home runs in 18 at-bats versus the Cincinnati right-hander. He's worth a play on Wednesday.
Brett Myers, SP5/28/2013 7:06:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Brett Myers (elbow) has been shut down for 5-7 days with right elbow soreness, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: Myers was placed on the DL on April 21 with a mild tear of his UCL, so this is a sign that rehab is not working. He could be headed for Tommy John surgery.
Chris Perez, RP5/28/2013 4:47:00 PM
Description: Indians closer Chris Perez has been diagnosed with mild tendinitis in his right rotator cuff. He'll be shut down from throwing for 5-7 days.
Insight: Perez has allowed seven earned runs over his last 2 2/3 innings and his ERA has jumped from 0.64 to 4.32 in the process. Vinnie Pestano will serve as the closer, though he allowed four runs in his last appearance and has a 5.25 ERA in 12 innings this season.
Mark Reynolds, DH5/28/2013 10:08:00 AM
Description: Cleveland slugger Mark Reynolds is 0-for-5 with four strikeouts against Cincinnati right-hander Mat Latos.
Insight: After a fast start, Reynolds (.259, 12 HR, 40 RBI) has hit just one home run in the last two weeks (12 games). This is not the matchup to get him started.
Vinnie Pestano, RP5/27/2013 11:44:00 AM
Description: Indians manager Terry Francona announced that Vinnie Pestano will get to close while Chris Perez is on the disabled list, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
Insight: Pestano is 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA and 1.42 WHIP - not exciting numbers, but from 2010-2012 he had a career ERA of 2.50 with a 1.10 WHIP.
Chris Perez, RP5/27/2013 10:35:00 AM
Description: Indians closer Chris Perez, who was pulled in the ninth inning after throwing a pitch to Jacoby Ellsbury and holding his right arm, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Perez is 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and six saves. The Indians have three possible replacements in Joe Smith, Vinnie Pestano and Cody Allen. We await word of who will get the closer's job in Perez's absence.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/27/2013 10:12:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is hitless in six at-bats against Reds starter Mike Leake.
Insight: Kipnis broke up a six-game streak without an extra base hit with a double and home run on Sunday. He's still not batting for a high average, but has eight home runs and 25 RBI. This matchup, however, isn't likely to help either category.
Corey Kluber, SP5/26/2013 6:41:00 PM
Description: The Indians wasted a very nice start from Corey Kluber, who went 6 2/3 IP, yielding three hits and one run while striking out 10 batters.
Insight: Kluber started the season well, but his previous four starts yielded 17 earned runs over 22 2/3 IP. Hopefully he's found regained his April form (2-0, 2.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP).
Chris Perez, RP5/26/2013 5:03:00 PM
Description: Indians closer Chris Perez was pulled in the ninth inning after throwing a pitch to Jacoby Ellsbury and holding his right arm. He gave up three walks, a double and a single before exiting.
Insight: Perez was 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and six saves heading into the game, but fantasy owners will have to stay on top of this injury to see the severity.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SSHot5/25/2013 7:44:00 PM
Description: Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera had another strong game Saturday against Boston (3-for-5, RBI, 2 SB).
Insight: Cabrera is hitting .474 over his last five games. Over that span, Cabrera's average has gone up from .237 to .263.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/25/2013 11:59:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against Boston.
Insight: Kipnis was hot, but over the past week has cooled, batting just .208 with a .546 OPS and can probably use the day off.
Michael Bourn, CF5/25/2013 11:55:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against Boston
Insight: Bourn has batted .304 over the past two weeks, but with very little power (.708 OPS)
Mark Reynolds, DH5/25/2013 10:42:00 AM
Description: Cleveland slugger Mark Reynolds is 5-for-15 (.333) with a home run against Boston lefty Jon Lester.
Insight: That's almost 100 points above his career batting average. More importantly, he's struck out just two times in 18 plate appearances, meaning he actually gets his bat on the ball. Start him despite his recent struggles.
Michael Brantley, LF5/24/2013 10:45:00 AM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley is just 1-for-8 against Boston left-hander Jon Lester with six strikeouts.
Insight: Brantley (.312, 2 HR, 24 RBI) is hitting well, but this matchup is extremely unfavorable.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold5/24/2013 9:42:00 AM
Description: Cleveland slugger Mark Reynolds is 1-for-8 with six strikeouts in his career against Boston right-hander John Lackey.
Insight: After hitting an unsustainable .301 in April, Reynolds has reverted to his old self, batting .216 in May with four homers, 18 RBI and 25 strikeouts in 74 at-bats. This is a matchup to avoid.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/24/2013 9:38:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is scheduled to return from paternity leave on Friday, but that doesn't mean you should install him in your lineup as he's a career .164 hitter versus Boston starter John Lackey with 23 strikeouts in 61 at-bats.
Insight: Swisher is hitting .286 with four homers and a .978 OPS in May, but this is an unfavorable matchup.
Michael Bourn, CF5/23/2013 10:48:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn had three hits and two RBI Thursday against Boston.
Insight: Bourn has gone 16-for-52 (.308) since returning from a lacerated finger.
Brett Myers, SP5/23/2013 6:50:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Brett Myers' velocity was down in his rehab start Wednesday and he will need one more start in the minors. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: Myers was placed on the DL on April 21 with a mild tear of his UCL. He closed for Houston last year but hasn't been a reliable starter since 2010.
Nick Swisher, 1BHot5/22/2013 5:44:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is scheduled to return from paternity leave on Friday, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
Insight: Swisher is hitting .286 with four homers and a .978 OPS in May. He'll end up missing three games.
Nick Swisher, 1BHot5/21/2013 4:18:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher, who has a good history against Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer will not get a chance to hit against him. He's out of the lineup due to family reasons
Insight: Swisher's .875 OPS is the highest of his career. He's helped lead the resurgent Cleveland offense, now ranked No. 2 in all of baseball at 5.07 runs-per-game, batting .313 over the past 13 games. They face the highest scoring team, Detroit, in a huge AL Central division series beginning on Tuesday, but without Swisher.
Daisuke Matsuzaka, SP5/21/2013 12:07:00 PM
Description: Indians righthander Daisuke Matsuzaka has dealt with an oblique injury and wildness (18 walks in 20 2/3 innings pitched at Triple-A Columbus).
Insight: Cleveland starting rotation is strong at the top with Justin Masterson and a rejuvenated Ubaldo Jimenez, but their 4.21 runs-per-game allowed is only average. If Matsuzaka could ever regain his control, there might be a spot for him at the end of the rotation.
Mark Reynolds, DHCold5/21/2013 9:49:00 AM
Description: Cleveland slugger Mark Reynolds has struggled against Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer, going 0-for-8 with five strikeouts in their matchups.
Insight: Reynolds' average has started to fall as his strikeouts (45 in 42 games) have piled up, but the first baseman still has 12 homers and 37 RBI in 146 at-bats. Facing Scherzer is likely to continue his drive toward another "strikeout title."
Michael Bourn, CF5/21/2013 9:46:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn is just a .091 hitter (1-for-11) versus Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer with four strikeouts.
Insight: After missing nearly a month because of a cut finger Bourn has begun to hit again (.368 over the last five games), but this matchup isn't likely to help.
Carlos Santana, C5/21/2013 9:42:00 AM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana is a .130 hitter (3-for-23) versus Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer.
Insight: Santana has finally put it all together with a .296, 7 HR, 16 RBI start and leads the position in OPS (.951). This matchup, however, in not a favorable one.
Nick Swisher, 1BHot5/21/2013 9:39:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is 5-for-10 versus Detroit right-hander Max Scherzer with a 1.415 OPS.
Insight: Swisher's .875 OPS is the highest of his career. He's helped lead the resurgent Cleveland offense, now ranked No. 2 in all of baseball at 5.07 runs-per-game, batting .313 over the past 13 games. They face the highest scoring team, Detroit, in a huge AL Central division series beginning on Tuesday.
Yan Gomes, CHot5/20/2013 9:14:00 PM
Description: Indians catcher Yan Gomes smashed a walk-off home run Monday against Seattle.
Insight: It was Gomes' second home run of the game and his fourth of the season. He's gone 9-for-20 at the plate over his last five games.
Michael Brantley, LF5/19/2013 6:34:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley (2-for-4, four RBI) went deep for the second time Sunday against Seattle.
Insight: It was his first home run off Felix Hernandez. Brantley (.301, 2 HR, 19 RBI) leads the team with 46 hits this season.
Justin Masterson, SPHot5/19/2013 5:31:00 PM
Description: Cleveland righty Justin Masterson (7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 11 K's, 2 BB) outdueled Felix Hernandez Sunday in a battle of American League aces.
Insight: Sunday was Masterson's seventh win of the season. The 28-year-old hasn't allowed a run in his last two outings.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/19/2013 9:04:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is hitting .273 with four homers and a .965 OPS in May, but he'll face Felix Hernandez Sunday. He's just 10-for-48 (.208) with 11 strikeouts against the Mariners right-hander, though he does have four homers against him.
Insight: Swisher is batting .250 with an .809 OPS against righties this year, compared to .300 with a .955 OPS against lefties. Plus, he is just 10-for-56 (.179) in day games. All signs point to this being a tough day for the Indians first baseman.
Mark Reynolds, DH5/18/2013 8:42:00 PM
Description: Cleveland corner infielder Mark Reynolds went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI Saturday against the Mariners.
Insight: Reynolds' average has started to fall as his strikeouts have piled up, but the first baseman still has 12 homers and 37 RBI in 138 at-bats.
Brett Myers, SP5/17/2013 11:26:00 AM
Description: Cleveland starter Brett Myers (elbow) is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Akron on Friday, according to mlb.com
Insight: Myers was placed on the DL on April 21 with a mild tear of his UCL. When healthy he can be a viable fantasy starter and could rack up a few wins behind the Indians' offense.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/15/2013 7:09:00 PM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is batting .288 with five doubles, two triples, six homers, 17 RBI, 15 runs and three steals over his last 16 games.
Insight: Kipnis has displayed 15-20 homer power in his career (including minors), and he stole 31 bags a season ago, so he obviously has fantasy value. But he strikes out a lot and doesn't hit for a high average.
Michael Bourn, CF5/15/2013 11:10:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn is not in Wednesday afternoon's lineup against the Phillies.
Insight: Bourn missed nearly a month because of a cut finger and is 3-for-18 since returning. He's hit Phillies starter Cole Hamels at a .296 clip, so this is likely just a day off for rest.
Justin Masterson, SP5/13/2013 7:55:00 PM
Description: Indians righthander Justin Masterson baffled the Yankees Monday for his second shutout of the season.
Insight: Masterson (6-2, 3.14 ERA) matched a season-high with nine strikeouts. He leads the majors with six wins in his first nine starts.
Luis Valbuena, SS5/13/2013 10:35:00 AM
Description: Cubs third baseman Luis Valbuena is questionable for Monday's game against Colorado with a bruised right pinky finger.
Insight: Valbuena is hitting well over his career average, batting .272 with five homers, 13 RBI and an .874 OPS. Considering he's a career .228 hitter/.656 OPS, fantasy owners should not be fooled by his early quick start.
Carlos Santana, CHot5/12/2013 9:36:00 AM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana is a .375 hitter (9-for-24) versus Detroit starter Rick Porcello with three home runs and a 1.215 OPS.
Insight: Santana (.350, 7 HR, 16 RBI) is one of the league's top-hitting catchers and leads the AL in OPS (1.097). Add in a favorable matchup and he's a must start.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS5/11/2013 10:19:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is a career .159 hitter (7-for-44) against Tigers starter Justin Verlander with 19 strikeouts and a .411 OPS.
Insight: Cabrera struggled through April and he continues to carry a low batting average, though he's begun to hit with more power (six extra base hits in nine May games). This matchup isn't likely to help his statistics.
Mark Reynolds, DH5/11/2013 10:15:00 AM
Description: Cleveland 1B Mark Reynolds has struck out in seven of his 12 at-bats versus Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander and has two hits for a .167 batting average.
Insight: Reynolds is off to a great start in Cleveland, batting .291 with 11 HR and 29 RBI, but this is an unfavorable matchup.
Michael Brantley, LFHot5/11/2013 10:14:00 AM
Description: Indians left fielder Michael Brantley is the rare hitter who has success against Detroit ace Justin Verlander (10-for-23).
Insight: Brantley has provided exactly what we've come to expect from him -- a solid batting average (.301) with some runs (19) and RBIs (11), but little power or speed (1 HR, 2 SB).
Nick Swisher, 1BHot5/10/2013 10:13:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI Friday against Detroit.
Insight: He was the only Indians player to have multiple hits. It was Swisher's first multi-hit game since April 20 at Houston. He's hitting .308 with three homers in May.
Corey Kluber, SP5/10/2013 9:59:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Corey Kluber was shelled by the Tigers Friday night.
Insight: Kluber gave up 11 hits and eight earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. He can be ignored in most fantasy leagues.
Trevor Bauer, SP5/10/2013 8:44:00 PM
Description: With a doubleheader coming up Monday against the Yankees, the Indians will recall Trevor Bauer to start the second game, according to Nick Camino of Newsradio WTAM 1100.
Insight: Bauer has made two spot starts this season and has allowed two hits and three earned runs in 10 innings but also has walked 13 batters. He has a 31/10 K/BB and a 2.55 ERA in 24 2/3 innings with Triple-A Columbus this season.
Carlos Santana, C5/10/2013 9:46:00 AM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana is just a .100 hitter (2-for-20) versus Detroit starter Max Scherzer.
Insight: The Indians gave Santana Thursday off, but it probably would have been a better idea to give him Friday off. Santana (.358, 7 HR, 15 RBI) is one of the league's top-hitting catchers, but this is an unfavorable matchup.
Mark Reynolds, DH5/9/2013 9:36:00 PM
Description: Cleveland 1B Mark Reynolds cracked his AL-leading 11th home run Thursday against the A's.
Insight: Reynolds went 2-for-3 with two RBI and is batting .291. His strikeout rate is still down from last season, but that could change, as he has fanned 11 times over his last eight games.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/9/2013 9:33:00 PM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis hit a homer and drove in three runs Thursday against the Oakland Athletics.
Insight: Kipnis is batting .279 with a double, two triples, four homers, 11 RBI and two steals over his last 10 games.
Scott Kazmir, SP5/9/2013 9:29:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Scott Kazmir struck out 10 batters and walked none over six innings of one-run ball Thursday against the Athletics.
Insight: That's an eye-opener for fantasy owners. Kazmir has never had great control, but he could barely throw the ball over the plate in 2010, when he walked 79 batters and had a 5.94 ERA in 150 innings. That was his last full season in the big leagues. He should be picked up in deeper mixed leagues after his latest start.
Michael Bourn, CF5/9/2013 5:05:00 PM
Description: The Indians have officially activated center fielder Michael Bourn from the disabled list.
Insight: Bourn missed nearly a month because of a cut finger. He went 1-for-7 with a stolen base during a two-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/9/2013 11:36:00 AM
Description: Indians 1B/RF Nick Swisher is a .500 career hitter against A's starter Bartolo Colon.
Insight: Luckily for Swisher, that's who is going to be pitching today for Oakland. Swisher (.255) is beginning to heat up with two homers in his last five games. He had just two in 24 games prior to his recent power surge.
Carlos Santana, C5/9/2013 10:36:00 AM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana will receive an off day Thursday against Oakland. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: No injury to report, just a day of rest for the star catcher. Santana (.358, 7 HR, 15 RBI) should be available off the bench and if not, he'll definitely be good to go Friday against Detroit.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/8/2013 9:37:00 PM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher crushed his fourth home run of the season Wednesday against the Athletics.
Insight: Swisher power numbers are down and he's hitting .255, but he does have 16 walks and a .364 on-base percentage.
Justin Masterson, SP5/8/2013 9:34:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson fired seven innings and allowed four hits and three runs, walked two and struck out seven Wednesday against the Athletics to improve his record to 5-2.
Insight: Masterson allowed 17 hits and 12 earned runs and walked six batters over his last 13 innings, but otherwise has been pretty effective this year. He has a 3.67 ERA, a 3.28 FIP and a 73.8 LOB%, and has increased his K/9 from 6.94 to 8.50 since last year.
Zach McAllister, SP5/7/2013 9:40:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Zach McAllister held the Athletics scoreless on five hits over 7 2/3 innings Tuesday.
Insight: McAllister is 3-3 with a 2.63 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. He's walked 10 batters in 37 2/3 innings, but five of those came in one start. The right-hander hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his six starts this year.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SSCold5/6/2013 10:47:00 PM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera found his home run stroke Monday against Oakland.
Insight: Cabrera crushed two long balls in the victory. He's up to four for the season, which puts him on pace for 22. His career-high in home runs came in 2011 when he belted 25 round-trippers.
Michael Bourn, CF5/5/2013 5:35:00 PM
Description: Center fielder Michael Bourn is expected to return to the Indians' lineup Thursday against Oakland. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: Monday, Bourn will begin a three-game rehab assignment for Triple-A Columbus. Bourn's return to the big leagues will mean fewer at bats for Ryan Raburn.
Brett Myers, SP5/5/2013 12:22:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Brett Myers (elbow) has been playing long toss and is hoping to be back on the mound in a week. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Myers was placed on the DL on April 21 with a mild tear of his UCL. He's trying to pitch through it, but as we saw with Chad Billingsley, rehab usually doesn't work in the long run with that type of injury.
Michael Bourn, CF5/5/2013 12:13:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (finger) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus Monday, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
Insight: Bourn suffered a lacerated right index finger on April 14 when he slid headfirst into first base and was stepped on by White Sox pitcher Matt Thornton. He was eligible to come off the DL last Tuesday, but was still feeling pain when gripping a bat and throwing the ball.
Scott Kazmir, SP5/4/2013 8:01:00 PM
Description: Indians lefty Scott Kazmir struck out seven batters and allowed five hits and two runs in six innings Saturday versus the Twins to pick up his first win since 2010.
Insight: Kazmir hasn't been relevant in fantasy leagues since 2008, and he didn't pitch in the big leagues last year. He's worth an add in AL-only leagues for his strikeout potential, but he isn't a good option in mixed leagues.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/4/2013 7:57:00 PM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher (shoulder) returned to the lineup and went deep in the first inning Saturday.
Insight: Swisher had not played since April 29. He's hitting .264 with three round-trippers, 10 RBI and 15 walks.
Jason Kipnis, 2BHot5/4/2013 7:51:00 PM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis went 3-for-4 with a triple, a homer and two RBI Saturday against the Twins.
Insight: Kipnis batted .125 in his first eight games and missed more than a week due to an elbow injury, but he's batting .294 with two triples, two homers, eight runs and six steals since returning to action 12 games ago.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/4/2013 11:13:00 AM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher hasn't played since April 29, but is probable for Saturday's game against Minnesota. He's been dealing with a sore shoulder.
Insight: We're still waiting for the power display that we know he has in him. He's batting .265 this season with a pair of homers and nine RBI, but he's averaged almost 26 home runs a season over the past eight years.
Trevor Bauer, SP5/2/2013 11:02:00 AM
Description: Cleveland sent Trevor Bauer down to Triple-A after his start Wednesday against the Twins.
Insight: Aside from the six walks he allowed, Bauer actually pitched pretty well on Wednesday (5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 5 K's). The young righthander will probably spend most of the season bouncing between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus.
Ryan Raburn, 2BHot5/1/2013 10:36:00 PM
Description: Cleveland utility player Ryan Raburn went off for four hits Wednesday in a 6-0 win over Philadelphia.
Insight: Raburn has 11 hits in his last three games. His batting average has gone up by 150 points over that span. Injuries to Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn have allowed Raburn to see regular at bats, though both players are expected to return soon.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/1/2013 6:47:00 PM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher will miss his second straight game because of a shoulder injury.
Insight: The good news is that Swisher should be back for Friday's series opener against Minnesota. Carlos Santana will get the start at first Wednesday night against the Phillies.
Mark Reynolds, DH5/1/2013 10:38:00 AM
Description: Cleveland 1B Mark Reynolds is hitless in six at-bats versus Phillies starter Cliff Lee and struck out on five occasions.
Insight: Reynolds usually hits a bunch of homers and bats around .220, but he'll take a .301 average and eight home runs into May. This matchup, however, is an unfavorable one.
Ryan Raburn, 2B5/1/2013 10:37:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Ryan Raburn is 2-for-19 with seven strikeouts against Phillies hurler Cliff Lee.
Insight: Raburn has been on fire the past two games, going 7-for-8 with four home runs and seven RBI, but this matchup is significantly unfavorable and could slow him down.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/1/2013 10:32:00 AM
Description: Indians outfielder Nick Swisher is 8-for-25 (.320) with a pair of home runs and a 1.059 OPS against Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee.
Insight: Swisher was not in the starting lineup Tuesday due to left shoulder soreness and could miss Wednesday's game as well, so check back later in the day for updates.
Zach McAllister, SP4/30/2013 10:37:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Zach McAllister went seven innings, walked one and allowed five hits and two runs in a win over Philadelphia Tuesday night.
Insight: McAllister is 2-3 with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP, but home runs could prove to be a problem for the right-hander. He allowed 19 in 125 1/3 innings last year and has given up four over his last three starts.
Carlos Santana, CHot4/30/2013 10:32:00 PM
Description: Indians catcher Carlos Santana will close out April batting .389 with five homers and 13 RBI in 72 at-bats.
Insight: Santana has a 13/12 K/BB after posting a 101/91 K/BB last year. Since last year's All-Star break, the catcher is batting .304 (102-for-335) with 18 homers and a 54/57 K/BB in 94 games.
Drew Stubbs, CF4/30/2013 10:30:00 PM
Description: Indians outfielder Drew Stubbs went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, a steal and three runs scored Tuesday versus the Phillies.
Insight: Stubbs has been awful this season, hitting .241 with 27 strikeouts in 79 at-bats, but he'll take this positive game into May.
Mark Reynolds, DHHot4/30/2013 10:28:00 PM
Description: Cleveland 1B Mark Reynolds blasted his eighth home run of the season Tuesday night against the Phillies.
Insight: Reynolds usually hits a bunch of homers and bats around .220, but he'll take a .301 average into May.
Ryan Raburn, 2BHot4/30/2013 10:26:00 PM
Description: Indians second baseman Ryan Raburn is 7-for-8 with four homers and seven RBI over the last two games.
Insight: Raburn has been getting more playing time with center fielder Michael Bourn on the DL, but he had not done anything of worth for fantasy owners until going 4-for-4 with two homers and four RBI last night. He had two more homers, three hits and three RBI Tuesday against the Phillies. Bourn will return sometime this week, but we could see Raburn split some at-bats with Drew Stubbs in right field or Jason Kipnis at second base while he is hot.
Michael Bourn, CF4/30/2013 7:35:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (finger) will play in a couple minor league rehab games before returning to action. SOURCE: Associated Press
Insight: Bourn is eligible to return from the DL today, but he has been experiencing pain when he grips a bat or throws a ball. Bourn suffered a lacerated right index finger on April 14 when he slid headfirst into first base and was stepped on by White Sox pitcher Matt Thornton.
Nick Swisher, 1B4/30/2013 4:55:00 PM
Description: Indians outfielder Nick Swisher is not in the starting lineup Tuesday due to left shoulder soreness, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
Insight: Swisher also could miss Wednesday's game, Indians manager Terry Francona said. He's batting .265 with two homers and nine RBI this season.
Ryan Raburn, 2B4/29/2013 10:57:00 PM
Description: Indians second baseman Ryan Raburn went 4-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs Monday against the Royals.
Insight: Raburn has been getting more playing time with center fielder Michael Bourn on the DL, but these were his first two homers of the season. He has managed to pick up 15 strikeouts in 46 at-bats, however.
Jason Kipnis, 2B4/29/2013 10:53:00 PM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis jacked his first homer of the 2013 season Monday against the Royals.
Insight: Kipnis is still hitting .185 and he has just four RBIs and five runs in 16 games.
Michael Brantley, LF4/29/2013 10:51:00 PM
Description: Indians left fielder Michael Brantley went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs Monday against the Royals.
Insight: Brantly has provided exactly what we've come to expect from him -- a solid batting average (.291) with some runs (12) and RBIs (7), but little power or speed (0 HR, 0 SB).
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP4/29/2013 10:45:00 PM
Description: Even after giving up three hits and zero runs in seven innings Monday against the Royals, Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez still has a 7.12 ERA.
Insight: That should tell you how bad Jimenez was over his first few starts. The right-hander is too wild to trust in any fantasy leagues.
Trevor Bauer, SP4/29/2013 9:06:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Trevor Bauer will make a spot start Wednesday against the Phillies, according to Nick Camino of Newsradio WTAM 1100 Cleveland.
Insight: The Indians need an extra starter after Sunday's doubleheader. Bauer will likely be sent down after the start.
Justin Masterson, SPCold4/28/2013 5:39:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson had his worst start of the season Sunday against the Royals, giving up nine hits and seven earned runs and walking four in 6 1/3 innings.
Insight: Masterson did strike out nine, giving him 39 K and 17 BB in 40 1/3 innings. He has a 3.12 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP this year.
Nick Swisher, 1B4/28/2013 9:33:00 AM
Description: Indians outfielder Nick Swisher has a lifetime .448 batting average (13-for-29) versus Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Swisher has gone just 2-for-14 over the past four games to lower his average to .278, but this is a favorable matchup.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SSCold4/27/2013 10:30:00 AM
Description: Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera would have played in Friday's game with Kansas City had it not been rained out and is expected to play for the first time since Monday.
Insight: He hasn't gotten off to a very good start (.156, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 510 OPS), but we know what he is capable of when healthy.
Carlos Santana, C4/27/2013 10:00:00 AM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana is just 2-for-11 (.182) against Royals starter Ervin Santana.
Insight: Santana (.352, 4 HR, 9 RBI) was dealing with flu-like symptoms earlier in the week and missed Wednesday's game and this poor matchup could be a nice reason to get Lou Marson a start behind the plate.
Michael Bourn, CF4/26/2013 7:30:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn had stitches removed from his finger on Thursday. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: He's targeting a return to the lineup some time next week. At this point, it doesn't look like the speedy outfielder will require a minor league rehab assignment.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SSCold4/26/2013 5:46:00 PM
Description: Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera has returned to the Indians' starting nine.
Insight: Cabrera missed a couple games earlier in the week because of quad soreness. He hasn't gotten off to a very good start (.156, 2 HR, 5 RBI).
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS4/26/2013 1:25:00 PM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (quad) has not played since Monday due to a right quad injury and is questionable for Friday's game against Kansas City.
Insight: Cabrera is batting just .156 and all the injuries (he also is dealing with a sore wrist) aren't going to make it easy for him to bounce back. If you have a viable backup shortstop, it would be wise to use him.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SSCold4/24/2013 12:45:00 PM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (wrist/quad) is not in Wednesday's lineup due to a right quad injury and is still recovering from a wrist problem.
Insight: Cabrera is batting just .156 and all the injuries aren't going to make it easy for him to bounce back. he can use a couple of days off.
Carlos Santana, C4/24/2013 11:58:00 AM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana (.352, 4 HR, 9 RBI) is not in Wednesday afternoon's starting lineup against the Chicago White Sox.
Insight: The just-activated Lou Marson will start behind the plate. Yan Gomes has been sent down to Triple-A Columbus.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SSCold4/21/2013 1:00:00 PM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (wrist) is not in Sunday's lineup due to a bruised left wrist.
Insight: Cabrera slipped down the dugout steps about 10 minutes before Saturday's game and suffered the injury, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Cabrera left the game after two at-bats. He's considered day-to-day after X-rays came back negative.
Brett Myers, SP4/21/2013 12:29:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Brett Myers has been placed on the 15-day DL with forearm soreness.
Insight: Forearm soreness can sometimes be indicative of an elbow issue. Corey Kluber will join the rotation and has some AL-only value.
Scott Kazmir, SP4/21/2013 9:22:00 AM
Description: Indians lefty Scott Kazmir (abdominal strain) allowed seven hits, three walks, two homers and six runs in 3 1/3 innings Saturday against Houston. It was his first appearance since 2011.
Insight: Kazmir had a strong spring to win the fifth spot in the rotation but suffered an abdominal strain at the beginning of April. The left-hander's start Saturday is doubly disappointing since he was given 18 runs of offense in the first four innings. Kazmir hasn't been a useful starter since 2010, so he has to prove he can still pitch before fantasy owners jump on board.
Mark Reynolds, DHHot4/21/2013 9:15:00 AM
Description: Cleveland 1B Mark Reynolds has six homers and 17 RBIs in 54 at-bats.
Insight: He's also batting .296 and has walked seven times. Of course, he also has struck out 14 times. We know he can hit the longball, but he'll have to keep his average at a respectable level to be a reliable fantasy option.
Jason Giambi, 1B4/21/2013 9:13:00 AM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, five RBIs and three runs Saturday against the Astros.
Insight: Giambi has only played four games this year and really serves as a pinch-hitter and another coach on the bench for manager Terry Francona. Best case scenario is that he duplicates his 2011 numbers -- .260, 13 HR, 32 RBI, .958 OPS (with Colorado).
Nick Swisher, 1B4/21/2013 9:11:00 AM
Description: Indians outfielder Nick Swisher went 4-for-7 with two RBIs and three runs scored Saturday night at Houston.
Insight: Cleveland exploded for 22 hits and 19 runs in the game. Swisher is batting .310 with two homers. eight RBIs, 11 runs and a 12/10 K/BB in 16 games.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SSCold4/20/2013 9:14:00 PM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera left Saturday's game against the Astros with a left wrist contusion, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
Insight: Cabrera is considered day-to-day. The shortstop is hitting .150 this season with two homers and three RBIs, and he missed out on most of Cleveland's offensive explosion Saturday night.
Brett Myers, SP4/20/2013 6:17:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Brett Myers will have an MRI on his right forearm Sunday, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Myers left Friday's start after five innings due to forearm soreness.
Insight: Forearm soreness can sometimes be indicative of an elbow issue. The MRI should give us more information.
Carlos Santana, C4/20/2013 11:53:00 AM
Description: Cleveland catcher Carlos Santana is 5-for-8 (.625) with two doubles, a homer and a 1.917 OPS against Houston starter Philip Humber.
Insight: Santana is just 2-for-14 since his return from a thumb injury, so that might negate his successful matchup with Humber.
