Insight: Bauer has alternated quality starts with non-quality starts in his last seven starts. The stretch is a microcosm of his season. He's gone 5-7 with a 4.18 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP and 114 Ks in 118 1/3 innings.

Insight: Gomes left Thursday's game with the injury, but he's feeling better Friday and won't be placed on the 7-day disabled list yet. Description: Indians backup catcher Roberto Perez could get some consistent work this week if Yan Gomes' head injury turned out to be a concussion. He's starting Friday night.
Insight: Perez should get most of the work behind the plate. He batted .305 in 53 games at Columbus and is hitting .294 in very limited at-bats with the Indians.
Yan Gomes, C8/22/2014 3:22:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes left Thursday's game (head) and is not in the lineup for Friday's game against Houston.

Description: Chicago Cubs third baseman Luis Valbuena is 6-for-11 over the past three games and will bat cleanup with Starlin Castro still unavailable.
Insight: Valbuena, eligible at both 2B and 3B, had been a decent fill-in option in May, but his numbers have fallen to below-fantasy level production as he's hit .195 in July and .206 in August.
Corey Kluber, SPHot8/21/2014 4:17:00 PM
Description: Indians pitcher Corey Kluber pitched a sub-par game for his standards, allowing three runs in seven innings, striking out eight and walking four.

Corey Kluber, SPHot8/21/2014 11:27:00 AM
Description: There has been no better pitcher over the last five starts than Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber and he'll be a great value Thursday facing a Minnesota lineup fresh off four consecutive losses.
Insight: The right-hander is 3-0 in his last five starts with a 0.46 ERA, 0.512 WHIP and 45 strikeouts in 39 IP. He'll face a Twins team that was shut out Wednesday and is averaging 4.19 rpg this season.
Yan Gomes, CHot8/20/2014 5:50:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Twins.
Insight: Roberto Perez is getting the start. Gomes has batted .284 with 17 homers, 53 RBI, 52 runs and an .804 OPS this season, making him one of the top fantasy backstops. Jonathan Lucroy played this afternoon and Gomes, Devin Mesoraco and Buster Posey are all sitting Wednesday night, so daily league owners don't have a lot of options at catcher behind Victor Martinez.
Nick Swisher, 1B8/20/2014 4:51:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is done for the season after undergoing surgery on both knees.
Insight: Swisher has been dealing with knee issues all season and hit .208 with eight homers, 42 RBI, 111 Ks and a .609 OPS in 360 at-bats.
Carlos Carrasco, SP8/16/2014 9:50:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Carlos Carrasco has won both of his starts since he rejoined the rotation.
Insight: Carrasco has given up just five hits and walked none over 12 scoreless innings in the span. The right-hander has very good stuff, but he's never been able to put it together. He's worth a pickup in deep mixed leagues due to his upside.
Carlos Santana, 1B 8/16/2014 9:45:00 PM
Description: Indians C/1B/3B Carlos Santana hit his first homer since July 27 Saturday against the Orioles.
Insight: Santana had gone 5-for-34 (.147) over his previous nine games. He's batting .231 on the year with 18 doubles, 21 homers, 59 RBI, 52 runs and an .802 OPS.
Michael Brantley, LFHot8/16/2014 9:40:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer Saturday against the Orioles.

Description: Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber struck out 10 batters and allowed one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings Friday against Baltimore.

The right-hander has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season, going 13-6 with a 2.41 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and 197 strikeouts in 179 1/3 innings. He's recorded a 1.31 ERA, a 0.83 WHIP and 89 Ks in 82 2/3 innings over his last 11 starts.
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B8/15/2014 6:08:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/DH Lonnie Chisenhall is out of the lineup Friday night against the Orioles.
Insight: The Indians are facing left-hander Wei-Yin Chen, so the lefty-hitting Chisenhall will take a seat even though he's gone 22-for-66 (.333) against southpaws this season. Mike Aviles is at third base.
Trevor Bauer, SP8/13/2014 7:06:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Trevor Bauer struck out nine batters and gave up two runs on four hits over eight innings Wednesday against Arizona.

Michael Bourn, CF8/13/2014 3:22:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (left hamstring injury) will be activated from the DL Friday, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Insight: A strained hamstring has kept Bourn out since July 6. He's hit .267 with three homers, 21 RBI, 37 runs and seven steals this season and his hamstring injury may make him reluctant to run after he returns to the Indians lineup.
Carlos Carrasco, SP 8/10/2014 5:20:00 PM
Description: In his return to the Indians' rotation, Carlos Carrasco held the Yankees scoreless on two hits, struck out four and didn't walk anyone in five innings.
Insight: Carrasco has great stuff, but he's never been able to put it together. He did put up a 2.30 ERA as a reliever this season, but his career ERA as a starter is 5.54 in 251 2/3 innings.
Jason Kipnis, 2B 8/10/2014 5:12:00 PM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis went 3-for-5 with a double, a steal and three runs scored Sunday against the Yankees.
Insight: Kipnis has gone 15-for-46 (.326) with four doubles, a homer and nine runs over his last 11 games, but he hasn't driven in a run over 10 games in August.

Description: Cleveland right fielder David Murphy has been placed on the disabled list with a sore right side, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: Murphy is third on the Indians with 55 RBI this season behind Michael Brantley and Carlos Santana. He's hitting .262 with seven homers, 36 runs and a .708 OPS. Nick Swisher was also placed on the DL Sunday and Cleveland called up Tyler Holt and Zach Walters from Triple-A Columbus.
Nick Swisher, 1B8/10/2014 12:41:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with right knee soreness.
Insight: Swisher spent time on the DL for the same reason earlier this season. He'll undergo tests on Monday to determine the extent of the injury. Swisher has hit .208 with eight homers, 42 RBI, 111 Ks and a .609 OPS in 360 at-bats this season.
Nick Swisher, 1B8/9/2014 10:49:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is a career .429 hitter (6-for-14) with a pair of home runs seven RBI and a 1.395 OPS versus Yankees right-hander Brandon McCarthy.
Insight: Swisher is just 1-for-15 over the past four games so may not be ready to take advantage of this favorable matchup. We're wishing for the days when he would bang out 20-30 HR like clockwork. He's got just eight through 96 games.
Danny Salazar, SP8/6/2014 10:31:00 PM
Description: The Indians sent Danny Salazar to the minors after he allowed five runs in four innings Wednesday night.
Insight: Cleveland has off days on Aug. 11, 14, 18 and 25, so they only need four starters for the rest of the month. Salazar went 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA and 17 Ks in his first three starts after being recalled from the minors.

Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley left Wednesday's game with an apparent leg injury, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.

Corey Kluber, SPHot8/4/2014 10:32:00 PM
Description: Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber gave up one run on six hits and struck out seven in 7 1/3 innings Monday against the Reds.
Insight: After going 18 innings without giving up an earned run his previous two starts, Kluber held the Reds scoreless in the first seven innings Monday before running into trouble in the eighth. He's gone 6-2 with a 1.43 ERA in his last nine starts and is now 12-6 with a 2.55 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP and a 177/35 K/BB in 165 2/3 innings.
Yan Gomes, CHot8/4/2014 10:30:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes (neck) went 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBI Monday in his return to the lineup.
Insight: Gomes was out of the starting nine that past two games due to stiffness in his neck. He's hit .328 with 11 doubles, eight homers and 25 RBI in his last 37 games.
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B 8/4/2014 10:28:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/DH Lonnie Chisenhall has gone 5-for-18 with a double, two homers and five RBI in his last four games.
Insight: It's a dramatic improvement over what he did in his previous 38 games (.203, 2 HR, 9 RBI). Chisenhall got off to such a hot start that he's still batting .306 despite that cold streak.
Yan Gomes, CHot8/4/2014 6:21:00 PM

Insight: Gomes missed the past two games due to stiffness in his neck. He's hit .331 with 11 doubles, seven homers, 23 RBI and a .941 OPS in his last 36 games.

Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher left Sunday's game due to a sore right wrist and has been downgraded to out for Monday's game against Cincinnati.
Insight: We're still wishing for the days when he would bang out 20-30 HR like clockwork. He's got just eight through 92 games and it doesn't look like he's going to reach the mark this season.
Nick Swisher, 1B8/4/2014 10:10:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher left Sunday's game due to a sore right wrist and is questionable for Monday's game against Cincinnati.
Insight: We're still wishing for the days when he would bang out 20-30 HR like clockwork. He's got just eight through 92 games and it doesn't look like he's going to reach the mark this season.
Nick Swisher, 1B8/3/2014 4:54:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher left Sunday's game due to a sore right wrist.
Insight: We're still wishing for the days when he would bang out 20-30 HR like clockwork. He's got just eight through 92 games and it doesn't look like he's going to reach the mark this season.
Michael Bourn, CF8/3/2014 10:23:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (left hamstring injury) ran the bases Saturday and came out of it without incident.
Insight: If he's fine Sunday, Bourn should begin a rehab assignment this week. Bourn last played July 5. He's batting .267 with 3 HR, 21 RBI, 37 runs and 7 steals.
Yan Gomes, CHot8/2/2014 3:30:00 PM

Michael Brantley, LFHot8/1/2014 10:37:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI Friday against the Rangers.
Insight: Brantley hasn't homered since July 12 and he went 15-for-58 (.259) in the 15 games prior to Friday, but there's no reason to think he won't continue to hit like he has all season.
Danny Salazar, SP8/1/2014 10:35:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Danny Salazar had another solid start Friday, throwing six innings and allowing one unearned run on four hits against the Rangers.
Insight: Salazar was demoted after posting a 5.53 ERA in his first eight starts and he got off to a rocky start in the minors, but he's figured things out. In three starts since he was recalled, he's gone 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA and 17 Ks in 18 innings.
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3BCold8/1/2014 10:34:00 PM

Insight: Chisenhall is still hitting .309 with 10 homers and an .854 OPS on the year, but it hasn't been pretty over the past six weeks (.210, 3 HR, 10 RBI in last 39 games).
Zach McAllister, SPCold8/1/2014 5:58:00 PM
Description: The Indians have designated right-hander Zach McAllister for assignment. Because McAllister is more than three years removed from his MLB debut, Cleveland needed to secure optional waivers on him before they could send him to Triple-A and in order to do that it had to designate him. The Indians can pull him off waivers if anyone claims him, so McAllister will end up with Triple-A Columbus. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: McAllister has imploded the past seven starts, going 0-4 with a 9.88 ERA in 27 1/3 innings. The right-hander had a 3.75 ERA in 2013 and his FIP this year is 4.04, so he could turn things around if he gets another shot.
Mike Aviles, SS8/1/2014 3:39:00 PM
Description: Indians utility man Mike Aviles will get the start at shortstop with Asdrubal Cabrera having been shipped off to Washington. He'll bat in the same spot as Cabrera - No. 2.
Insight: Aviles is batting .257 without much power and 10 stolen bases in 226 at-bats, so his fantasy value moving forward is minimal.
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3BCold7/31/2014 10:44:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/DH Lonnie Chisenhall has gone 4-for-38 (.105) in his last 10 games.

Jason Kipnis, 2BCold7/30/2014 9:34:00 PM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis has gone 4-for-39 (.103) in his last 10 games.
Insight: Kipnis showed signs of life by hitting .311 with two home runs, eight RBI, 12 runs and five steals in the first 14 games of July, but he's failed to keep it up. The second baseman's average fly-ball distance has declined by 15.79 feet from last year, which explains why his HR/FB is 6.3 percent and he has just 21 extra-base hits in 352 plate appearances.
Corey Kluber, SPHot7/30/2014 9:30:00 PM
Description: Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber tossed the first shutout of his career, a three-hitter against the Mariners, Wednesday night.
Insight: Kluber two-hit the Royals and allowed one unearned run over nine innings his last time out and has posted a 28/1 K/BB in 26 2/3 innings his last three starts. The right-hander has turned into a dominant ace for the Indians this season, going 11-6 with a 2.61 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP and a 170/33 K/BB in 158 1/3 innings.
T.J. House, SP7/30/2014 5:08:00 PM
Description: T.J. House will replace Justin Masterson in Cleveland's rotation, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: Masterson was traded to the Cardinals on Wednesday. House will serve as Cleveland's No. 5 starter behind Corey Kluber, Trevor Bauer, Danny Salazar and Zach McAllister. House isn't a good fantasy option.
Justin Masterson, SPCold7/29/2014 9:18:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson (knee) will return from the disabled list Friday against the Rangers, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Masterson went 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA and 195 Ks in 193 innings a year ago, but he's 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP in 98 innings this year. His 4.06 FIP suggests he'll improve, but he hasn't shown any signs of that yet. He's set to be a free agent after the season.
Danny Salazar, SP7/27/2014 5:33:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Danny Salazar has given up four runs on 13 hits and struck out 13 in 12 innings since being recalled on July 22. He held the Royals to three runs, struck out seven and walked none in seven innings Sunday.
Insight: Salazar was demoted after posting a 5.53 ERA in his first eight starts and he got off to a rocky start in the minors, but he figured things out at the end of June. His upside is immense.
Yan Gomes, CHot7/27/2014 5:31:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI Sunday.
Insight: Gomes has hit .439 with three home runs in his last 12 games. Between Gomes and Carlos Santana, the Indians have two catchers who rank in the top five at the position in home runs.
Carlos Santana, 1BHot7/27/2014 5:28:00 PM
Description: Indians C/1B/3B Carlos Santana went deep twice Sunday, giving him five homers in the past three games.
Insight: Santana has gone 14-for-23 (.609) with six homers and 10 RBI in his last six games and is suddenly batting .232 with 20 home runs, 50 RBI and an .827 OPS. He's raised his average 27 points and his OPS 101 points in that span.
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3BCold7/27/2014 1:27:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/DH Lonnie Chisenhall is out Sunday with an illness.
Insight: He sat out Saturday for the same reason but should be back Tuesday after Cleveland's off day on Monday. Chisenhall has predictably fallen off after batting .393 in his first 168 at-bats. Over his last 126 at-bats, he's hit .206 with nine RBI and a .604 OPS.

Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (back) has missed the last four games and is out again for Saturday's game.
Insight: Cabrera left Monday's game with back spasms. He's not much more then a fill-in shortstop for fantasy owners, batting .247 with a .699 OPS, but he has scored 52 runs and knocked in 39 and has been the subject of trade talks.

Jason Kipnis, 2B7/23/2014 12:13:00 PM

Insight: Swarzak is making his first start since 2012 Wednesday afternoon against the Indians. Kipnis has had a disappointing season, batting .254 with five home runs, 30 RBI, 38 runs and a .698 OPS, but he's a good play Wednesday.
Danny Salazar, SP7/22/2014 5:43:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Danny Salazar has been called up to start Tuesday against the Twins.
Insight: Salazar entered this season with a lot of buzz but posted a 5.53 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP while allowing eight homers in 40 2/3 innings. He's recorded a 4.02 ERA and a 67/28 K/BB in 53 2/3 innings since his demotion to Triple-A, and he's been very good since he returned from a triceps strain on June 15 (3.07 ERA, 52/20 K/BB in 41 IP).

Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (back) is not in the lineup Tuesday.

Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson (knee) allowed two runs on five hits, struck out six and walked two over five innings in his rehab start for Triple-A Columbus on Sunday.
Insight: Masterson could be ready to rejoin the Indians rotation on Friday at Kansas City. The right-hander went 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA and 195 Ks in 193 innings a year ago, but he's 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP in 98 innings this year. His 4.06 FIP suggests he'll improve, but he hasn't shown any signs of that yet.
Yan Gomes, CHot7/20/2014 8:33:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes hit his fourth home run of the month Sunday at Detroit.
Insight: Gomes has batted .319 with eight extra-base hits in July to raise his average up to .273 and his OPS to .776 on the year. He ranks in the top five among catchers with 13 home runs.
Josh Tomlin, SPCold7/20/2014 5:27:00 PM
Description: Since he threw a one-hit, 11-K shutout on June 28 at Seattle, Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin has given up 13 runs on 24 hits in 17 innings.
Insight: Tomlin also gave up 18 runs (13 earned) on 28 hits in the 15 innings prior to that dominant outing. The 29-year-old can be avoided.
Corey Kluber, SPHot7/19/2014 5:40:00 PM
Description: Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber posted another 10 strikeouts Saturday against the Detroit Tigers
Insight: Kluber has arguably been the surprise of the year, delighting fantasy owners with a 2.95 ERA, 152 strikeouts and 33 walks. His 9.7 Ks per nine innings pitched is the best since he became a starter in 2012. He needs one more win to tie last year's career high of 11.
Carlos Santana, 1BCold7/19/2014 10:38:00 AM
Description: Indians C/1B/3B Carlos Santana is likely to sit the second game of the doubleheader with Detroit as he's just 3-for-34 (.088) against Game 2 pitcher Max Scherzer.
Insight: Santana hasn't hit right-handers all season (.184) so there is no reason to think he'll start in this unfavorable matchup.
Michael Bourn, CF7/19/2014 10:29:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (left hamstring injury) was originally on a 3-4 week timetable for his return, but that doesn't appear to be the reality of the injury.
Insight: Three weeks down the road and there is still no timetable for his return to the lineup. Even when he returns, he'll likely tone down his running game and without that his fantasy value is minimal.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS7/18/2014 10:52:00 PM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera hit his first home run since June 20 Friday against the Tigers.
Insight: Cabrera hasn't come close to matching his 25-homer, 17-steal 2011 season. He's on pace for 15 home runs and 12 steals this year.
Jason Kipnis, 2B7/18/2014 10:45:00 PM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis smashed two home runs and drove in four runs Friday at Detroit.
Insight: Kipnis hadn't hit one out of the park since April 21. He has five home runs in 300 plate appearances this year after blasting 17 in 658 a year ago.
Michael Brantley, LFHot7/18/2014 10:42:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley went 4-for-5 with a double, a steal and two runs Friday at Detroit.
Insight: Brantley has been one of the top players in fantasy this season and he's showing no signs of slowing down.
Trevor Bauer, SP7/13/2014 4:42:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Trevor Bauer struck out 10 batters over 6 2/3 scoreless innings Sunday against the White Sox.
Insight: Bauer has been inconsistent this season, but he has a ton of upside and he put that on display Sunday with one of the best starts of his career. He'll take a 3.84 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP and 70 Ks in 72 2/3 innings into the second half.
Yan Gomes, C7/13/2014 4:41:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI Sunday against the White Sox.
Insight: Gomes has blasted 12 homers this season, fifth among backstops.
Chris Dickerson, LF7/12/2014 3:00:00 PM
Description: Newly acquired outfielder Chris Dickerson is not in Saturday's starting lineup due to an injured hamstring.
Insight: Dickerson had started the last five games playing for the injured Michael Bourn and was batting .471 over that span. It's not believed to be serious enough for a trip to the disabled list.
Nick Swisher, 1BHot7/11/2014 10:34:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher hit his third homer in the past five games Friday against the White Sox.
Insight: He's put together a modest seven-game hitting streak to raise his average from .194 to .207.
Michael Bourn, CF7/10/2014 10:13:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (left hamstring injury) is on a 3-4 week timetable for his return.
Insight: Bourn with a running issue makes him a non-factor for fantasy owners for a while even when he returns to the lineup. He's batting .267 with 3 HR, 21 RBI, 37 runs and seven steals.
Zach McAllister, SP7/9/2014 5:14:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Zach McAllister (3-4, 5.89 ERA, 1.52 WHIP) will start Saturday against the White Sox, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Insight: McAllister was sent to the minors on June 20 after coming off the disabled list. He's posted a 2.39 ERA in four starts since then.
Nick Swisher, 1B7/9/2014 12:49:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher has homered in two straight games and he has two homers in 11 career at-bats against Brandon McCarthy.
Insight: McCarthy will make his Yankees debut Wednesday after coming over from the Diamondbacks in a trade over the weekend. Swisher is still hitting just .198 this season, but he could be a decent option Wednesday.
Michael Brantley, LFHot7/8/2014 10:19:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley had his fifth straight multi-hit game and his 14th homer of the season Tuesday against the Yankees.
Insight: Brantley is now hitting .328 with 14 homers, 60 RBI, 59 runs, 10 steals and a .920 OPS. The 27-year-old is one of this year's breakout fantasy stars and he'll represent the AL in the All-Star game next week.
Justin Masterson, SPCold7/8/2014 6:23:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with right knee soreness.
Insight: Masterson has thrown just nine innings in his last three starts and allowed 13 runs on 20 hits with a 14/10 K/BB in that span.
Yan Gomes, C7/7/2014 10:37:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes has homered in two straight games.
Insight: Gomes is tied for fifth among catchers with 11 dingers this season.
Justin Masterson, SPCold7/7/2014 10:33:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson was bombed again Monday against the Yankees. He allowed five runs on six hits in two innings.
Insight: Masterson has thrown just nine innings in his last three starts and allowed 13 runs on 20 hits with a 14/10 K/BB in that span.
Chris Dickerson, LF7/7/2014 3:53:00 PM
Description: Newly acquired outfielder Chris Dickerson get the start in left field Monday night for the Indians.
Insight: Dickerson hit well at Triple-A Indianapolis, batting .309 with an .886 OPS, but his last major league experience in Baltimore not very good (.238, 4 HR, 13 RBI, .666 OPS).
Corey Kluber, SPHot7/6/2014 10:36:00 AM
Description: Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber will look to stay hot when he faces Danny Duffy and the Royals Sunday afternoon, a team against which he owns a 3.77 lifetime ERA in seven starts.
Insight: Kluber has arguably been the surprise of the year, delighting fantasy owners with a 2.99 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 127 strikeouts and 23 walks. Helping matters is the fact that the heart of KC's order -- Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler -- all own lifetime averages below .200 against Kluber.
Michael Bourn, CF7/6/2014 10:11:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn left Saturday night's game with a left hamstring injury and not unexpectedly is not in Sunday's starting lineup.
Insight: Bourn with a running issue makes him a non-factor for fantasy owners. He could miss a few games.
Michael Bourn, CF7/5/2014 11:33:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn left Saturday night's game with a left hamstring injury.
Insight: Not before Bourn homered and scored a pair of runs. Bourne could miss a few games.
Jason Kipnis, 2B7/5/2014 11:22:00 AM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis is 8-for-14 (.571) with a pair of homers versus Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Almost every statistical measurement is down for Kipnis this season from batting average to OPS. It gets worse, over his career he's been better in the first half than after the All-Star break. Doesn't bode well for Kipnis owners.
Michael Brantley, LFHot7/4/2014 10:38:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley broke up Yordano Ventura's shutout bid with a solo homer in the ninth inning Friday against the Royals.
Insight: Brantley went 2-for-4 Friday and is hitting .314 with 13 homers, 55 RBI, 57 runs, 10 steals, a 30/29 K/BB and an .891 OPS. There's nothing to dislike about Brantley.
Carlos Santana, 1BCold7/1/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Indians C/1B/3B Carlos Santana is hitless in nine at-bats against Dodgers right-hander Josh beckett.
Insight: Santana hasn't hit right-handers all season (.174) and has batted just .063 this week so there is no reason to think he'll start in this unfavorable matchup.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS6/30/2014 10:02:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is a career .087 hitter (2-for-23) against Dodgers starter Dan Haren.
Insight: The switch-hitting shortstop is putting up decent numbers considering he's only batting .248. He's hit eight homers, knocked in 33 runs and scored 46 times. Not great fantasy statistics, but worthy of fill-in status when needed. Don't use him on Monday in the unfavorable matchup.
Justin Masterson, SP6/29/2014 4:06:00 PM
Description: According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Indians right-hander Justin Masterson (knee) has been cleared to start Tuesday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Masterson has been dealing with a sore right knee for most of the season and he had his latest start pushed back from Sunday. Masterson has had a disappointing season, regressing from 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA in 2013 to 4-5 and a 5.03 ERA this year. His 3.91 FIP and .328 BABIP suggest he's been unlucky, however, so he could be a buy-low candidate.
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B 6/28/2014 8:57:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/DH Lonnie Chisenhall is out of the lineup Saturday against the Mariners.
Insight: Chisenhall has hit .196 in his last 12 games and the Indians will get him a night off with lefty Roenis Elias on the mound.
Justin Masterson, SP6/25/2014 8:13:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson will have his next start pushed back. SOURCE: Fox Sports Arizona
Insight: He was supposed to start Sunday against Seattle but now it looks like he'll start Tuesday instead. Masterson (4-5, 5.03 ERA) suffered a minor knee injury during his last outing. The right-hander has allowed five or more runs in two of his last three starts.
Carlos Santana, 1BHot6/25/2014 9:58:00 AM
Description: Indians C/1B/3B Carlos Santana went 4-for-5 with a double, a homer and two RBI Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.
Insight: Santana has batted .371 with six homers and 14 RBI since he returned from a concussion on June 6. He's up to .214 on the year and is finally starting to reward fantasy owners who exercised patience while he was carrying a .150 average for most of the season.
Michael Brantley, LFHot6/22/2014 5:04:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBI Sunday against the Tigers.
Insight: Brantley has had a breakout season. He's already hit a career-high 11 homers with 46 RBI, 49 runs and nine steals. The outfielder has gone 65-for-179 (.363) with 14 doubles, seven homers, 29 RBI, 36 runs and five steals since the start of May.
Carlos Santana, 1B6/22/2014 10:31:00 AM
Description: We wouldn't recommend starting Indians first baseman Carlos Santana Sunday against the Tigers.
Insight: That's because he's logged just three hits in 31 lifetime at bats against today's starting pitcher, Max Scherzer. Overall, Scherzer is 8-4 against Cleveland with a 4.75 ERA in 16 career starts.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS6/22/2014 9:29:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera went 3-for-5 in Saturday's loss to Detroit.
Insight: Six of Cabrera's 30 RBI this season have come in the past five games. The switch-hitting shortstop is tied with Michael Brantley for the team lead in at bats with 272.
Michael Brantley, LF6/21/2014 4:04:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley (concussion) pinch hit Friday night and has been installed in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Brantley left Monday's game after banging his head on a hard slide into second base and began experiencing concussion symptoms. He singled in his return last night and should be ready to go. He's on a nine-game hitting streak.
Jason Kipnis, 2B6/21/2014 10:28:00 AM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis is just 3-for-26 (.115) with 12 strikeouts against Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander.
Insight: Almost every statistical measurement is down for Kipnis this season from batting average to OPS. The only good news is that he's 8-for-9 in stolen base attempts, but we're not sure he'll find a way to get on base in this unfavorable matchup.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS6/20/2014 10:36:00 PM
Description: Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera has hit two home runs in his last four games and four homers in June.
Insight: Cabrera went 1-for-4 with a homer and three RBI Friday against the Tigers. He's hitting .251 with eight home runs, 29 RBI, 43 runs, five steals and a .732 OPS, good numbers for a fantasy shortstop.
Carlos Santana, 3BHot6/20/2014 10:34:00 PM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B/C Carlos Santana went 2-for-4 with a solo homer Friday against the Tigers.
Insight: Santana has gone 16-for-48 (.333) with four homers and 11 RBI in June and is nearing the Mendoza line after coming into June with a .159 average.
Zach McAllister, SP6/20/2014 2:00:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Zach McAllister (3-4, 5.89 ERA, 1.52 WHIP) has been optioned to Triple-A Columbus.
Insight: McAllister hadn't done much that was fantasy worthy of late, yielding four earned runs or more in five of the last six.
Michael Brantley, LF6/20/2014 10:40:00 AM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley (concussion) is more likely to be back Saturday than Friday.
Insight: Brantley left Monday's game after banging his head on a hard slide into second base and began experiencing concussion symptoms during his pre-game routine on Tuesday. When he returns, he's on an eight-game hitting streak.
Carlos Santana, 3B6/20/2014 9:46:00 AM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B/C Carlos Santana is a career 11-for-34 (.324) with three home runs versus Detroit right-hander Rick Porcello.
Insight: Santana's multi-position eligibility makes him a viable option when he's hitting, but he's batting just .191 this season after hitting safely in five of his last six games.
Justin Masterson, SP6/19/2014 5:43:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Justin Masterson tossed seven innings and allowed one run on four hits Thursday against the Angels.
Insight: Masterson has pitched better than his 4.75 ERA indicates -- he has a 3.91 FIP but has a 65.7 percent strand rate due to a .385 BABIP with RISP.
Nick Swisher, 1B6/19/2014 5:41:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher hit a walk-off grand slam off Angels closer Ernesto Frieri Thursday afternoon.
Insight: Swisher's average is right at the Mendoza line this season and he has just five homers and 24 RBI in 210 at-bats.
Nick Swisher, 1B6/19/2014 10:12:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is a career .314 hitter (11-for-35) with a 1.013 OPS versus Angeles left-hander C.J. Wilson.
Insight: Swisher is struggling to keep his batting average above the Mendoza Line after going 2-for-20 since returning from the disabled list. It's probably best to avoid him even in this favorable matchup.
Zach McAllister, SPCold6/18/2014 9:01:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Zach McAllister (back) is expected to start Friday against the Angels.
Insight: He was activated from the disabled list Wednesday and was going to start Thursday, but Wednesday's game was rained out and Justin Masterson will have his start moved. McAllister allowed 18 hits, 17 earned runs, six walks and four homers in 7 2/3 innings over his last three starts before going on the disabled list with lower back soreness on May 22. He has a 3.83 FIP this season, so he should improve his 5.89 ERA, but he shouldn't be used Thursday against the hot-hitting Angels.
Michael Brantley, LF6/18/2014 5:43:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley (concussion) could be back Saturday, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Insight: Brantley left Monday's game after banging his head on a hard slide into second base and began experiencing concussion symptoms during his pre-game routine on Tuesday.
Michael Brantley, LF6/17/2014 9:23:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley (head) is displaying concussion-like symptoms, according to mlb.com.

Michael Brantley, LF6/17/2014 5:54:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley (head) was scratched from the lineup Tuesday.

Michael Brantley, LF6/17/2014 2:52:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley left Monday's game after a hard slide at second base, but is back in the lineup for Tuesday night.
Insight: His exit appears to have been precautionary. Brantley is in the middle of a breakout season, batting .323 with 11 HR, 46 RBI, 49 runs and nine steals.
Michael Brantley, LF6/16/2014 9:19:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley left Monday's game after a hard slide at second base. SOURCE: Joe Reedy, Fox Sports
Insight: His exit was precautionary. Mike Aviles (.259, 3 HR, 21 RBI) has come on to take Brantley's place in left field.
Yan Gomes, C6/16/2014 3:36:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes is not in Monday's starting lineup. George Kottaras will be his replacement.
Insight: Gomes is playing better than expected with seven homers, 23 RBI and a .708 OPS in 60 games this season, providing fantasy owners with a quality backstop. Kottaras is a career .217 hitter, but is 4-for-9 this season with three homers in his three starts.
Michael Bourn, CFCold6/16/2014 10:06:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn is just 1-for-10 with five strikeouts versus Angels right-hander Jered Weaver.
Insight: Bourn has done little over the past two weeks (12 games) batting .175 and stealing just one base. Avoid this unfavorable matchup.
Carlos Santana, 3B6/16/2014 10:00:00 AM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B/C Carlos Santana is a career 9-for-17 (.529) against Angels starter Jered Weaver.
Insight: Santana's multi-position eligibility makes him a viable option when he's hitting, but that hasn't been often this season. He does have eight homers, but he's batting just .190 even after a three-hit game on Sunday.
Nick Swisher, 1B6/15/2014 7:14:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher launched his fourth home run of the season Sunday against Boston.
Insight: His solo shot down the right field line gave Cleveland a 3-2 lead in the 11th inning. Swisher was hitless in his other four at bats. Swisher may be a household name but his fantasy contributions haven't been up to snuff this season (.207 AVG in 52 games).
Carlos Santana, 3B6/15/2014 7:08:00 PM
Description: Cleveland 1B/3B Carlos Santana tagged the Red Sox for three hits Sunday in a 3-2 win.
Insight: Santana is an attractive fantasy piece because he plays so many different positions (first base, third base and catcher). Unfortunately, it's hard to start a guy when he's only hitting .190. Santana will string together a few good games here and there but consistency has never been his strong suit.
Nick Swisher, 1B6/14/2014 11:31:00 AM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher should not be started on Saturday.
Insight: Swisher (.206, 3 HR, 19 RBI) went 0-for-4 Thursday in his return from a knee injury, but he's 1-for-12 with eight strikeouts against Red Sox right-hander Jake Peavy. Avoid.
Nick Swisher, 1B6/13/2014 6:57:00 PM
Description: Cleveland will be without first baseman Nick Swisher Friday against Boston. SOURCE: Joe Reedy, Sportstime Ohio
Insight: Swisher (.206, 3 HR, 19 RBI) went 0-for-4 Thursday in his return from a knee injury. He should be back in there on Saturday.
Nick Swisher, 1B6/12/2014 6:46:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher has been activated from the 15-day DL.
Insight: Swisher (.211, 3 HR, 19 RBI) was out with a hyperextended knee. He'll serve as the DH and bat seventh tonight against Boston.
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3BHot6/10/2014 5:41:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/DH Lonnie Chisenhall, who went 5-for-5 with three homers and nine RBI Monday at Texas, has been on fire for the past month.
Insight: In his last 24 games, Chisenhall (.385, 7 HR, 32 RBI) has hit .440 with eight doubles, seven homers, 29 RBI, 17 runs and just seven strikeouts. The former first-round pick has a 29.4 percent line-drive rate, fourth-highest in baseball among players with at least 150 plate appearances.
Michael Brantley, LF6/10/2014 10:16:00 AM
Description: Indians left fielder Michael Brantley is just 1-for-12 (.083) against Royals left-hander Jason Vargas.
Insight: Brantley has broken out this season, batting .307 with 10 homers, 43 RBI, 30 runs, eight steals and an .871 OPS. All that being true, he's still a questionable option in Tuesday's matchup.
Yan Gomes, C6/9/2014 4:18:00 PM
Description: Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes is not in Monday's starting lineup. The job will be handled by George Kottaras.
Insight: Gomes is playing better than expected with seven homers, 22 RBI and a .758 OPS in 54 games this season, providing fantasy owners with a quality backstop. Kottaras is a career .216 hitter.
Nick Swisher, 1B6/8/2014 3:23:00 PM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher is expected to return Thursday against Boston. He's been rehabbing a hyperextended knee. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: He's ready to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Akron. The 33-year-old hasn't been of much use to fantasy owners, providing just three homers and 11 RBI in 49 games this season. Swisher's .211 average is a career-worst.
Zach McAllister, SPCold6/8/2014 2:24:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Zach McAllister (back) will make a rehab start Tuesday, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Insight: McAllister will return to Cleveland's rotation after that if he doesn't suffer a setback. He allowed 18 hits, 17 earned runs, six walks and four homers in 7 2/3 innings over his last three starts before going on the disabled list with lower back soreness, though the injury may have just been an excuse to allow the right-hander to work out his issues. McAllister has a 3.83 FIP this season, so he should improve his 5.89 ERA.
Josh Tomlin, SPHot6/7/2014 7:33:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin turned in eight strong innings in an 8-3 win over the Rangers Saturday.
Insight: Tomlin (4-2, 3.12 ERA) allowed seven hits and three earned runs, didn't walk anyone and struck out five. Due to his extremely low 1.12 BB/9, Tomlin's WHIP is just 0.94 in 40 1/3 innings.
Carlos Santana, 3B6/7/2014 7:31:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/C Carlos Santana has reached base in six of his eight plate appearances since he returned from the concussion DL Friday.
Insight: Santana went 2-for-2 with a homer, two RBI, two runs and two walks Saturday at Texas. He has a .342 on-base percentage even though he's hitting just .171.
Carlos Santana, 3B6/6/2014 4:32:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/C Carlos Santana has been activated from the concussion disabled list.
Insight: Santana was hit in the mask by a foul tip May 25, leading to his second concussion in the last three seasons. Santana has had a tough time at the plate (.159, 6 HR, 17 RBI) this season. We'd be hesitant to start him tonight against Texas ace Yu Darvish (5-2, 2.08 ERA).
Carlos Santana, 3B6/6/2014 4:32:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/C Carlos Santana (concussion) has been activated from the concussion disabled list.

Danny Salazar, SP6/4/2014 6:03:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Danny Salazar was placed on the disabled list in Triple-A due to a triceps strain. SOURCE: Nick Camino, Newsradio WTAM 1100
Insight: Salazar entered this season with a lot of buzz but posted a 5.53 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP while allowing eight homers in 40 2/3 innings. He's gone 0-3 with a 7.11 ERA in 12 2/3 innings with Triple-A Columbus since his demotion.
Nick Swisher, 1B6/3/2014 10:45:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher (knee) has progressed to land-based activities and could begin a rehab assignment soon. SOURCE: mlb.com
Insight: Swisher is eligible to return from the disabled list on June 11. Up until Monday, the entirety of his rehab work had been done in the pool. Swisher is hitting just .211 with three home runs and a .631 OPS this season and shouldn't be owned in most fantasy leagues.
Luis Valbuena, SS6/3/2014 11:59:00 AM
Description: Chicago Cubs third baseman Luis Valbuena is expected to return for Tuesday's game against the NY Mets (sore abdominal), according to beat writer Mark Gonzalez.
Insight: Valbuena, eligible at both 2B and 3B, has been a decent fill-in option this season, batting .263, but with an .820 OPS.
Carlos Santana, 3B6/3/2014 11:58:00 AM
Description: Indians 3B/C Carlos Santana (concussion) is eligible to return from the 7-day disabled list Wednesday, but Cleveland manager Terry Francona said a Friday return seems more realistic. Source: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: Santana was hit in the mask by a foul tip May 25, leading to his second concussion in the last three seasons. It seems as though the Indians are being extra careful with Santana, who is having a dull season at the plate (.159/.327/.301, 6 HR, 17 RBI).
David Murphy, RFHot6/2/2014 9:40:00 PM
Description: Cleveland right fielder David Murphy extended his hitting streak to six games Monday in a victory over the Red Sox.

Justin Masterson, SP6/2/2014 9:33:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Justin Masterson bounced back for his third win of the season Monday against Boston.
Insight: Masterson (3-4, 4.72 ERA) loaded the bases in the first but it was smooth sailing after that. He finished with a season-high ten strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. He's now 4-3 in his career versus the Red Sox.
Jason Giambi, DH6/2/2014 3:09:00 PM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi could be a nice play on Monday. Update: Giambi is in Monday's starting lineup.
Insight: Giambi is a career .325 hitter with three homers versus Boston right-hander John Lackey. Add in a strong wind blowing out to right field and he's a viable fantasy option. Giambi has homered in two of his last five games.
Jason Giambi, DH6/2/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi could be a nice play on Monday.
Insight: Giambi is a career .325 hitter with three homers versus Boston right-hander John Lackey. Add in a strong wind blowing out to right field and he's a viable fantasy option. Giambi has homered in two of his last five games.
Michael Bourn, CF6/1/2014 8:21:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn smashed a walkoff home run Sunday against Colorado.
Insight: It was only Bourn's second homer of the season. He's hitting .288 this year, a significant improvement from last season when Bourn batted just .263 over 130 games. Unfortunately, he hasn't been nearly as active on the base paths, logging just four steals in 37 contests.
Carlos Santana, 3B6/1/2014 12:07:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/C Carlos Santana (concussion) thinks he'll be able to return Wednesday, but Cleveland's medical staff thinks Friday is more realistic, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Insight: Santana was hit in the mask by a foul tip last Sunday and began experiencing concussion symptoms.
Zach McAllister, SPCold6/1/2014 12:04:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Zach McAllister (back) will make a rehab start Wednesday, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Insight: McAllister allowed 18 hits, 17 earned runs, six walks and four homers in 7 2/3 innings over his last three starts before going on the disabled list with lower back soreness, though the injury may have just been an excuse to allow the right-hander to work out his issues. McAllister has a 3.83 FIP this season, so he should improve his 5.89 ERA.
Mike Aviles, SS5/31/2014 9:28:00 PM
Description: Indians utility man Mike Aviles logged three hits in Saturday's win against Colorado.
Insight: His eighth inning single plated the game-winning run. Aviles' .280 average is his highest since 2010 when he hit .304 in 110 games for Kansas City.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/31/2014 11:41:00 AM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis will take a seat Saturday with Mike Aviles getting the start.
Insight: Kipnis (.235, 3 HR, 12 RBI) played the last two games after a stint on the disabled list (oblique). He should be back on Sunday. Aviles is a nice addition to the Indians roster because he can play almost anywhere, but without much fantasy value.
Corey Kluber, SPHot5/30/2014 10:22:00 PM
Description: Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber struck out 12 batters over 7 1/3 innings Friday against the Rockies.
Insight: Do you believe yet? Kluber leads the majors with 95 strikeouts and has walked just 18 batters while recording a 3.04 ERA. He should get it even lower than that. His FIP is an MLB-leading 2.20 but he has a .347 BABIP.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/30/2014 3:29:00 PM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis, just off the 15-day disabled list, will bat cleanup for the second straight day.
Insight: Kipnis (.224, 3 HR, 12 RBI) batting in the No. 4 hole should explain why the Indians are six games under .500 at 24-30. Although a good hitter and solid player, Kipnis is not a cleanup hitter with his career high home run total of 17 and RBI total of 84.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/28/2014 6:37:00 PM
Description: Cleveland has officially activated second baseman Jason Kipnis from the 15-day DL.
Insight: Kipnis (.234, 3 HR, 12 RBI) missed about a month with a strained oblique. He's batting cleanup tonight against the White Sox.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/27/2014 4:43:00 PM
Description: Nick Swisher has been placed on the disabled list due to a sore left knee suffered in Monday night's game.
Insight: Swisher has also struggled with a sore right knee. With just three homers in 185 at bats, Swisher hasn't had a particularly large impact on the fantasy realm this season.
Carlos Santana, 3B5/27/2014 4:30:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/C Carlos Santana has been placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list.
Insight: Santana was a late scratch from Monday's lineup because he was feeling ill. He was hit in the mask by a foul tip Sunday against the Orioles.
Justin Masterson, SPCold5/27/2014 1:51:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson has been ugly of late and could probably be avoided in his matchup with Chris Sale and the White Sox on Tuesday.
Insight: Masterson hasn't been very effective in his last three starts, giving up five runs or more in each outing to raise his ERA from 3.86 to 5.32.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/27/2014 9:38:00 AM
Description: Nick Swisher is questionable for Tuesday's game against the Chicago White Sox due to a sore left knee suffered in Monday night's game.

Jason Kipnis, 2B5/26/2014 3:13:00 PM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis (oblique) will return to the starting lineup Wednesday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Carlos Santana, 3B5/26/2014 2:54:00 PM
Description: Indians 3B/C Carlos Santana is out of the lineup Monday due to an illness, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Asdrubal Cabrera, SSCold5/26/2014 11:08:00 AM
Description: Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera wasn't in the lineup Sunday against Baltimore (he pinch hit), but is in Monday's starting lineup.
Insight: Cabrera is in Monday's lineup, but given a 1-for-13 (.077) history against Jose Quintana should not be started.
Michael Brantley, LFHot5/26/2014 7:24:00 AM
Description: Indians left fielder Michael Brantley is a career .462 hitter (6-for-13) against White Sox starter Jose Quintana.
Insight: Brantley has broken out this season, batting .302 with nine homers (one away from tying his career high), 38 RBI, 30 runs, seven steals and an .883 OPS. Hot hitter plus favorable matchup equals must start.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/26/2014 6:30:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis (oblique) is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list for Tuesday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
Insight: Kipnis hasn't played since April 29 due to a strained oblique, but if you come back too soon you can eaily re-aggravate the situation. Though off to a slow start, Kipnis is a big part of the Indians offense (.234, 3 HR, 12 RBI in 27 games).
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS5/26/2014 6:26:00 AM
Description: Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera wasn't in the lineup Sunday against Baltimore, but ended up pinch hitting.

Nick Swisher, 1B5/25/2014 10:11:00 AM
Description: Nick Swisher will start at first base Sunday against the Orioles. He missed Saturday's game with a sore knee. SOURCE: Roch Kubatko, MASN
Insight: With just three homers in 180 at bats, Swisher hasn't had a particularly large impact on the fantasy realm this season. There's still time for him to turn things around but we're not holding our breath.
Corey Kluber, SPHot5/24/2014 8:08:00 PM
Description: Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber looked sharp Saturday in a win over Baltimore.
Insight: The Orioles failed to score against him in seven innings. Kluber (5-3, 3.10 ERA) now has 83 strikeouts on the season, second only to Tampa Bay's David Price.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/24/2014 11:39:00 AM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher is not in Saturday's starting lineup due to a sore right knee.
Insight: Swisher (.211, 3 HR, 18 RBI) has always been a low average, but high home run total guy, but this year he's not hitting enough long balls.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS5/24/2014 11:37:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against Baltimore because of a sore right foot.

Josh Tomlin, SP5/22/2014 10:43:00 AM

Zach McAllister, SPCold5/21/2014 6:03:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Zach McAllister was knocked around again on Wednesday against the Tigers.
Insight: McAllister gave up four earned runs (five total) in two innings and has allowed 17 earned runs on 18 hits (4 HR) in 7 2/3 innings his last three starts. McAllister's 3.85 FIP suggets his 5.89 ERA will improve, but there's no way fantasy owners can trust him right now.
Carlos Santana, 3B5/21/2014 11:59:00 AM
Description: Indians 3B/C Carlos Santana won't be of use to fantasy owners Wednesday against Max Scherzer.
Insight: In 27 lifetime at bats, Santana has just three hits against the right-hander. Santana has had an underwhelming season, hitting just .151 over 46 contests. The only reason he's still owned in so many leagues is because of his catcher eligibility.
Trevor Bauer, SP5/20/2014 10:20:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Trevor Bauer picked up his first win of the year Tuesday against the Tigers.
Insight: Bauer, who replaced Danny Salazar in the rotation after getting his control problems in check at Triple-A, gave up two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks in six innings Tuesday. Jason Giambi, DH5/20/2014 3:22:00 PM
Description: The Indians have activated DH Jason Giambi on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: He was out with a strained calf. Giambi is hitless for the season in ten at-bats and doesn't usually see enough action in his pinch hitting role to warrant attention from fantasy owners.

Description: Indians hot-hitting left fielder Michael Brantley is a career .390 hitter against Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander (16-for-41).

Corey Kluber, SPHot5/19/2014 10:37:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Corey Kluber struck out more than one batter per inning for the sixth straight start Monday against the Tigers and allowed three runs over seven innings.
Insight: Kluber has fanned 55 batters in his last 42 1/3 innings. His fielding-independent numbers are among the best in the majors (2.34 FIP), but he's been hurt by a .355 BABIP. That means he may be able to get his ERA even lower than 3.43, where it currently sits.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/19/2014 9:06:00 PM
Description: According to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com, Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis (oblique) is hoping to start a rehab assignment by this weekend, according to mlb.com.

Asdrubal Cabrera, SS5/17/2014 10:04:00 AM

Michael Brantley, LF5/16/2014 5:29:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley (back) will return to the lineup Friday, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Description: Cleveland will call up Trevor Bauer from Triple-A Columbus to start Tuesday against the Tigers, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.

The 2011 No. 3 overall pick seems to have solved his control issues and is 4-1 with a 2.15 ERA, a 1.087 WHIP and a 44/14 K/BB over 46 innings in the minors. He was called upon to pitch one Indians game in early April and pitched well (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 Ks) while showing improved velocity.

Description: Indians starter Danny Salazar was demoted to the minors on Friday.

Insight: Aguilar smacked 16 homers with 105 RBI last season at Double-A Akron and was batting .298 with seven homers, 19 RBI and a .914 OPS. If he keeps hitting at the major league level, struggling Nick Swisher may lose some playing time.

Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley left Wednesday's game with mid-back tightness and is not in Thursday's starting lineup.
Insight: Brantley had a career-high 10 homers last season and is already three away from tying it. Ryan Raburn, Michael Bourn and David Murphy will man the outfield. Raburn has shown nothing this season, batting just .176 with no homers.

Description: Indians Triple-A right-hander Trevor Bauer continues to pitch well at Columbus and should get a call from the big club soon.
Insight: The 2011 No. 3 overall pick seems to have solved his control issues and is 4-1 with a 2.15 ERA and 1.087 WHIP in the minors. He was called upon to pitch one Indians game in early April and pitched well (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 Ks) so could get a call to replace Danny Salazar in the rotation.

Lonnie Chisenhall, 3BHot5/14/2014 10:50:00 PM

Michael Brantley, LF 5/14/2014 9:37:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley left Wednesday's game with mid-back tightness, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Insight: Brantley had a career-high 10 homers last season and is just three away from tying it already this season. Cleveland also had Nyjer Morgan, who replace Brantley, leave with a mild right knee sprain, so the Indians may be short on outfielders Thursday.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/14/2014 11:34:00 AM
Description: Cleveland first baseman Nick Swisher is 2-for-15 lifetime against Toronto starter Dustin McGowan.
Insight: Swisher (.204, 2 HR, 15 RBI) has been a bust this season and Wednesday night's matchup won't help. He shouldn't be owned in any fantasy leagues.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SSHot5/13/2014 10:42:00 AM
Description: Batters usually either love or hate facing a knuckleball pitcher and Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera appears to love it when batting against Blue Jays right-hander R.A. Dickey.
Insight: Cabrera faced Dickey six times and has taken him deep twice among three extra base hits. The Indians shortstop appears to be coming out of his slow start, batting .476 over his last five games with a pair of homers. His fantasy owners should love this matchup.
Nyjer Morgan, CF5/11/2014 8:45:00 PM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Njyer Morgan slammed three hits in Sunday's win against the Rays.
Insight: Morgan's solo shot in the eighth was his 12th career homer. He could see more at bats if Michael Bourn continues to struggle (.244, 0 HR, 7 RBI in 78 at bats).
John Axford, RP5/10/2014 5:44:00 PM
Description: John Axford is no longer the closer for the Cleveland Indians, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: Cleveland will go with the dreaded closer by committee, with Cody Allen, Bryan Shaw, Marc Rzepczynski, and Scott Atchison in the mix for saves. Allen (1.84 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 22 Ks in 14 2/3 IP) is the best option.
David Murphy, RF5/8/2014 9:45:00 PM
Description: Indians right fielder David Murphy enjoyed a 3-for-4 afternoon Thursday against the Twins.
Insight: It's his second three-hit game of the season. Murphy (.270, 2 HR, 19 RBI) has cooled off a bit since his hot start but he's still on pace for 88 RBI, which would be a career-high. In deeper leagues, he could be worth a look.
Mike Aviles, SSHot5/8/2014 9:42:00 PM
Description: Cleveland utilty player Mike Aviles had a big game Thursday against Minnesota.
Insight: He corked three hits with two of them going for extra bases. The veteran has now logged ten hits in his last 17 at bats (.588). Aviles has played four different positions for the Indians this year including left field, shortstop, second base and third.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS5/8/2014 4:01:00 PM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera had four hits, including two doubles and a home run, three RBI and two runs Thursday against the Twins.
Insight: Cabrera's average dipped to .205 after he went 5-for-37 (.135) from April 25 to May 6, but he's gone 6-for-9 his last two games. The 28-year-old's home run total declined in each of the last two seasons.
Michael Brantley, LFHot5/8/2014 3:59:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley went 3-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and two runs Thursday afternoon against the Twins.
Insight: Brantley has hit safely in eight straight games and is batting .289 with six home runs, 29 RBI, 19 runs and four steals. The 26-year-old batted .284 with 10 home runs, 73 RBI, 66 runs and 17 steals last year.
Michael Bourn, CF5/8/2014 9:45:00 AM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) will start Thursday, according to the Indians on Twitter.
Insight: Bourn (.266) began the season on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring and left Saturday's game with tightness, but he's confident that it was only scar tissue breaking up. Bourn's game is speed, so this is a cause for concern even though he's back in the lineup. Bourn has attempted five steals this season and stolen two bases.
Michael Bourn, CF5/7/2014 4:13:00 PM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) isn't in Wednesday's lineup. He said Tuesday he hoped to be back in the lineup within a few days.
Insight: Bourn (.266) began the season on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring and left Saturday's game with tightness, but he's confident that it was only scar tissue breaking up. Bourn's game is speed, so this is a cause for concern even if he's able to avoid the DL. He's attempted five steals this season and stolen two bases.
Nick Swisher, 1B5/6/2014 9:47:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher broke out of a 2-for-25 slump with two hits Tuesday against the Twins.
Insight: Swisher had a double and one RBI to raise his average to .206.
Josh Tomlin, SP5/6/2014 9:43:00 PM
Description: In his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery, Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin allowed one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings Tuesday against the Twins.
Insight: Tomlin had a 6.36 ERA in 2012 before undergoing Tommy John surgery in August, and he threw just two innings last year. The 29-year-old had a 4.25 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP and 89 strikeouts in 2011.
Michael Bourn, CF5/6/2014 4:41:00 PM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) said he feels good and hopes to be back in the lineup within the next few days, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Zach McAllister, SP5/5/2014 10:35:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Zach McAllister held his own Monday in a pitching battle with Twins starter Kyle Gibson.
Insight: While Gibson tossed seven scoreless innings for Minnesota, McAllister threw 6 2/3 shutout frames for Cleveland (8 K's, 1 BB). The eight strikeouts he recorded were a season-high. McAllister's 3.18 ERA is the lowest of any pitcher in Cleveland's starting rotation.
Jason Giambi, DH5/5/2014 7:23:00 PM
Description: The Indians have placed DH Jason Giambi on the 15-day DL.
Insight: He's out with a strained calf. This is already Giambi's second trip to the disabled list this season. He's hitless for the season in ten at bats.
Yan Gomes, C5/5/2014 6:07:00 PM
Description: Cleveland has activated catcher Yan Gomes from paternity leave.
Insight: Gomes (.261, 3 HR, 10 RBI) will bat seventh Monday against the Twins. The 26-year-old is on track to set new career-highs in both home runs and RBI.
Carlos Santana, 3B5/4/2014 5:58:00 PM
Description: Indians third baseman Carlos Santana ended the week on a down note after going 6-for-15 with three homers and eight RBI from April 28 to May 2.
Insight: Santana went 0-for-8 the past two days and is batting .152 with a .615 OPS this season. Due to his excellent plate discipline (25/24 K/BB), we're confident Santana will turn his season around.
Corey Kluber, SP5/4/2014 3:10:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Corey Kluber struck out 13 batters over eight innings and gave up one run on three hits Sunday against the White Sox, but he took a no decision after John Axford blew a save.
Insight: Kluber (2-2, 3.60 ERA) has struck out 29 batters in his last 21 2/3 innings and 48 batters in 45 innings this season. He should get even better, as he's been hurt by a .348 BABIP despite carrying a line-drive rate around the league average.
Justin Masterson, SP5/3/2014 9:19:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson was masterful, yielding just four hits over 7 1/3 innings.
Insight: Masterson hasn't been very effective this season giving up five runs of more in three of his last five outings, but he was definitely on today.
Michael Bourn, CF5/3/2014 8:58:00 PM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn left Saturday's game in the third inning because of a tight hamstring. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: Bourn went 1-for-2 before exiting. Michael Brantley (.271, 5 HR, 23 RBI) replaced Bourn in center while Mike Aviles (.250, 1 HR, 5 RBI) took over for Brantley in left field.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/2/2014 4:47:00 PM
Description: According to Nick Camino from WTAM Cleveland, Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis will need 3-to-5 weeks to recover from a strained oblique.
Insight: If that timeline holds true, Cleveland may not get Kipnis back until early June. Elliot Johnson (.133, 0 HR, 0 RBI) figures to see most of the reps at second base while Kipnis is sidelined.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/2/2014 3:52:00 PM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 30. SOURCE: Zack Meisel, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Kipnis (.234, 3 HR, 12 RBI) strained his oblique Tuesday in a loss to the Angels. He's hoping to be back around Memorial Day.
Jason Kipnis, 2B5/2/2014 10:41:00 AM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis is doubtful for Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox.
Insight: Kipnis (.234, 3 HR, 12 RBI) strained his abdomen in Tuesday night's game and will probably be on the shelf for at least a few more days.
Jason Kipnis, 2B4/30/2014 4:20:00 PM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis won't be available Wednesday against the Angels. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Kipnis (.234, 3 HR, 12 RBI) strained his abdomen in last night's game and will probably be on the shelf for at least a few more days. Elliot Johnson, formerly of the Rays, will take over at second base.
Michael Brantley, LF4/30/2014 4:17:00 PM
Description: Indians left fielder Michael Brantley isn't listed on the lineup card for Wednesday's tilt with Los Angeles. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Maybe manager Terry Francona read our fantasy note from earlier and determined this was a bad matchup for Brantley (1-for-14 against C.J. Wilson). Utility man Mike Aviles (.255, 1 HR, 5 RBI) is getting the start in left field for Cleveland.
Michael Brantley, LFCold4/30/2014 11:42:00 AM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley has been brutal lately and Wednesday's matchup against Angels ace C.J. Wilson certainly won't help matters.
Insight: Brantley is 1-for-14 lifetime against Wilson (3-2, 3.69 ERA). What's interesting about Brantley's slump is that despite having two hits in his last 20 at bats, he's only struck out twice over that span, which means he's still making good contact. We're guessing Brantley (.255, 4 HR, 20 RBI) will turn things around quickly but probably not today versus Wilson.
Carlos Santana, 3B4/30/2014 11:38:00 AM
Description: Indians third baseman Carlos Santana has had a tough go of it against Angels starter C.J. Wilson.
Insight: He's hitting .176 against the left-hander in 17 previous at bats. The irony here is that's actually higher than his season average (.156). Until Santana turns things around (he's already starting to with with four hits in his last eight at bats), we wouldn't advise putting him in your lineup.
Jason Kipnis, 2B4/30/2014 10:34:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis has been diagnosed with a strained abdomen. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: He suffered the injury during Tuesday's game against the Angels. Kipnis (.234, 3 HR, 12 RBI) will be re-evaluated Wednesday to see if he should go on the disabled list. Cleveland's backup second baseman is Mike Aviles (.255, 1 HR, 5 RBI).
Carlos Carrasco, SPCold4/29/2014 5:13:00 PM
Description: The Indians have moved Carlos Carrasco to the bullpen, according to mlb.com.
Insight: He has a 6.95 ERA this season and is out of minor league options. We could see Trevor Bauer -- 1.40 ERA, 28/7 K/BB in 25 2/3 innings with Triple-A Columbus -- get his shot, though Josh Tomlin is also an option for Cleveland.
Carlos Santana, 3B4/29/2014 10:54:00 AM
Description: Cleveland C/3B Carlos Santana is a career .500 hitter (7-for-14) against Angels starter Jered Weaver.
Insight: Santana blasted a huge home run on Monday night to break out of a 1-for-20 slump. This favorable matchup could help.
Danny Salazar, SP4/27/2014 8:11:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Danny Salazar dominated the Giants Sunday, allowing one run on five hits with an 8/1 K/BB in seven innings.
Insight: Salazar came in with a 7.85 ERA. The talented right-hander's velocity has been down a couple ticks from last season but he consistently sat at 95 mph Sunday. Salazar has struck out 11.01 batters per nine innings and been hurt by a .388 BABIP, so he's a good buy-low candidate.
Nick Swisher, 1B4/24/2014 6:45:00 PM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Thursday against the Royals.
Insight: Swisher's average is down to .205 and he has 25 strikeouts in 88 at-bats.
Corey Kluber, SP4/24/2014 3:10:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Corey Kluber pitched a gem against Kansas City on Thursday, throwing a complete game four-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks.
Insight: It was the first complete game of his career. Kluber pitched well last season (11-5, 3.85 ERA. 1.262 WHIP), but has been inconsistent through five starts this season.
Jason Kipnis, 2B4/24/2014 9:59:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is hitless in seven at-bats versus Royals left-hander Bruce Chen.
Insight: Kipnis is normally a slow starter who heats up in May and June, so his .243 batting average isn't a surprise. This matchup won't help.
Michael Brantley, LFHot4/24/2014 9:56:00 AM
Description: Indians left fielder Michael Brantley is 10-for-19 (.526) against Kansas City left-hander Bruce Chen.
Insight: Brantley is on fire over the past two weeks with a .300 batting average, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 10 runs and four steals. Add in the favorable matchup and he's a must start on Thursday.
Jason Giambi, DH4/24/2014 9:53:00 AM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi is a career 6-for-16 (.375) with four home runs versus Kansas City starter Bruce Chen.
Insight: This is contrary to Giambi's career numbers which show he's a much better hitter against right-handers (.283, .945 OPS) than lefties (.264, .852 OPS). With DH Ryan Raburn batting .191 this season and unfavorable numbers against Chen, expect to see Giambi in the lineup and he'll have fantasy value if started.
Michael Bourn, CF4/23/2014 10:22:00 PM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn went 3-for-5 Wednesday against the Royals, but he was caught stealing twice.
Insight: Bourn is 2-for-5 on stolen-base attempts, but at least he's not being conservative on the basepaths after missing the first two weeks with a hamstring injury.
Justin Masterson, SP4/23/2014 10:19:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson has tossed two straight quality starts after giving up 10 earned runs on 14 hits in 8 1/3 innings in his previous two turns.
Insight: Masterson still doesn't have a decision this season. The right-hander allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with a 6/2 K/BB in 6 1/3 innings Wednesday against Kansas City and now has a 4.50 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. He should improve once his .346 BABIP comes down, though he'll have to get his 4.18 BB/9 in check as well.
John Axford, RP4/23/2014 10:16:00 PM
Description: Indians closer John Axford tied Francisco Rodriguez for the MLB lead with his eighth save Wednesday against the Royals.
Insight: Axford lost the closer job last year with Milwaukee but was effective in 16 innings for the Cardinals (including playoffs) after being traded to earn a contract with Cleveland. His 1.34 WHIP and 6.51 BB/9 suggest you should sell high while he has a 2.79 ERA.
Carlos Santana, 3BCold4/23/2014 10:14:00 PM
Description: Cleveland C/3B Carlos Santana has picked up zero hits in his last 14 at-bats and two in his last 45.
Insight: He went 0-for-3 Wednesday, has just one homer and is batting .130 this season.
Michael Brantley, LFHot4/23/2014 11:49:00 AM
Description: Indians left fielder Michael Brantley is still looking for his first hit off Kansas City starter Jason Vargas.
Insight: He's 0-for-9 against him, though bizarrely he has not struck out against the left-hander. Brantley has been killing it lately with five hits and four RBI in his last three appearances. With that said, the odds are definitely against him on Wednesday.
David Murphy, RF4/23/2014 11:44:00 AM
Description: Fantasy owners should avoid Cleveland right fielder David Murphy on Wednesday.
Insight: That's because of his dreadful batting average against Royals starter Jason Vargas (.091 in 22 at bats). Murphy has gotten off to a nice start (.288, 2 HR, 15 RBI) but we wouldn't expect much from him on Wednesday.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS4/23/2014 11:42:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is having a pretty awful season (.205, 1 HR, 5 RBI in 20 games) but he could be worth a look Wednesday against Kansas City left-hander Jason Vargas.
Insight: He's hitting .500 against him in ten career at bats. Two of those five hits went for extra bases so this matchup does have potential. Cabrera still has time to turn things around this season but the clock is ticking.
Jesus Aguilar, 1B4/22/2014 2:25:00 PM
Description: Cleveland's top first base prospect, Jesus Aguilar, is off to a torrid start, batting .386 with five homers and a 1.190 OPS.
Insight: Aguilar smacked 16 homers with 105 RBI last season at Double-A Akron. Nick Swisher (.197) had better start hitting the ball or could eventually find himself in a platoon situation down the road.
Jason Giambi, DH4/21/2014 3:52:00 PM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi has been activated from the disabled list.
Insight: He was dealing with a broken rib. At age 43, Giambi (.183, 9 HR, 31 RBI last season) is the oldest active player in Major League Baseball. He was hitless in 10 minor league at bats, so isn't likely to be ready for your fantasy lineup.
Luis Valbuena, SS4/21/2014 11:55:00 AM
Description: Chicago Cubs third baseman Luis Valbuena should be in fantasy lineups on Monday.
Insight: Valbuena is a career .462 hitter (6-for-13) off Arizona starter Bronson Arroyo with a pair of homers and a 1.764 OPS. Then add in a wind blowing out to right at Wrigley Field and the left-hander is set up for success despite a .219 season batting average.
Nick Swisher, 1B4/21/2014 11:46:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisheris 14-for-40 (.350) with a pair of homers and a 1.101 OPS versus Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Swisher is "up" to .181 after going 3-for-11 over the past three games. We've come to expect a low average with Swisher's power, but not this low. Swisher has hit at least 21 homers in nine consecutive seasons.
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3BHot4/21/2014 11:44:00 AM
Description: Indians third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall is 5-for-10 (.500) with a homer versus Royals right-hander jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: The 2008 first-round draft pick is finally starting to show his ability, batting .448 this spring. He's hit safely in eight of nine games he's played this season.
Jason Kipnis, 2B4/21/2014 11:42:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is 6-for-11 (.545) with a home run against Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: The career .268 hitter is batting just .230 through his first 18 games, including four hitless games in the last five, so this may not be the time to jump on this favorable matchup.
Carlos Carrasco, SPCold4/20/2014 4:15:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco has allowed four earned runs or more in all three starts this season. He gave up four on six hits with three walks in 5 2/3 innings Sunday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: It's only a matter of time before the Indians give up on Carrasco and call up Trevor Bauer. Bauer has a 0.75 ERA and an 18/3 K/BB in 12 innings in the minors and allowed one run on four hits with eight strikeouts over six innings in a spot start for the Indians on April 9.
Yan Gomes, C4/20/2014 11:34:00 AM
Description: Indians catcher Yan Gomes is not in the starting lineup Sunday.
Insight: Gomes is batting .245 with two homers in 53 at-bats. Carlos Santana will start behind the plate Sunday, with Lonnie Chisenhall at third base and Ryan Raburn at DH.
Nick Swisher, 1BCold4/20/2014 9:32:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher has gone 4-for-27 (.148) with eight Ks against Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow.
Insight: Swisher is hitting .174 with 18 strikeouts in 69 at-bats this season and facing Morrow Sunday won't help matters.
Carlos Santana, 3BCold4/20/2014 9:29:00 AM
Description: Cleveland C/3B Carlos Santana will carry a 3-for-40 (.075) slump into Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, but he'll face a pitcher he's had success against in the past.
Insight: Santana has gone 5-for-10 with two doubles and four walks against Brandon Morrow in their previous meetings. That may help him break out of this frigid stretch.
Carlos Santana, 3BCold4/19/2014 6:51:00 PM
Description: Cleveland C/3B Carlos Santana is two for his last 35 (.057).
Insight: He hit his first homer Friday night but went 0-for-4 Saturday against the Blue Jays and is hitting .153. His only positive is a 13/16 K/BB.
Corey Kluber, SPCold4/19/2014 6:47:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Corey Kluber gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings Saturday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Kluber (5.40 ERA, 1.71 WHIP) has allowed 34 hits in 23 1/3 innings this season. He has been crushed for a line-drive rate north of 31 percent and that's reflected in his .390 BABIP.
Nick Swisher, 1B4/19/2014 9:53:00 AM
Description: Indians first baseman Nick Swisher is 11-for-27 (.407) with a couple of homers versus Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle.
Insight: Two items may put an end to this trend. Swisher is batting just .185 this spring and there will be a brisk wind blowing in at 12 mph at Progressive Field.
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3BHot4/19/2014 9:47:00 AM
Description: Indians third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall is 3-for-8 (.375) with a pair of homers versus Toronto starter Mark Buehrle.
Insight: The 2008 first-round draft pick is finally starting to show his ability, batting .481 this spring. He's hit safely in all eight games he's played this season
Michael Brantley, LFHot4/17/2014 10:49:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley recorded four RBI Thursday in a loss to Detroit.
Insight: That gives Brantley 14 RBI for the season, tied for third-most in the American League. He's on pace to drive in 151 runs this year, which is more than double his career-high in that category (73 in 2013).
Jason Kipnis, 2BCold4/17/2014 2:28:00 PM
Description: It was a short day for Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis as he was ejected in the third inning for arguing a strike call.
Insight: Not much was expected of Kipnis anyway, as he was just 3-for-24 (.125) in his career against Detroit's right-hander Justin Verlander, so this shouldn't hurt too many lineups.
Jason Kipnis, 2BCold4/17/2014 9:40:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is an ugly 3-for-24 (.125) in his career against Detroit's right-hander Justin Verlander.
Insight: That includes 11 Ks. Kipnis is hitting .220 with two homers, three steals and 11 walks in 14 games this season.
Michael Brantley, LF4/17/2014 9:29:00 AM
Description: Indians outfielder Michael Brantley is one of the rare hitters with success versus Detroit ace Justin Verlander.
Insight: Brantley is a career .395 hitter against the right-hander. He's also 4-for-4 in stolen bases once he gets on base.
Jason Kipnis, 2B4/16/2014 10:36:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is 3-for-17 in his career against Detroit's Anibal Sanchez.
Insight: That includes six Ks. Kipnis is hitting .234 with two homers, three steals and 10 walks in 13 games this season.
Jason Giambi, DH4/15/2014 9:42:00 PM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi is slated to return Friday against the Blue Jays. SOURCE: Indians.mlb.com
Insight: He's been on the disabled list with a broken rib. At age 43, Giambi (.183, 9 HR, 31 RBI last season) is the oldest active player in Major League Baseball. His next game will be the 2,235th of his career.
Nyjer Morgan, CF4/15/2014 3:37:00 PM
Description: Indians outfielder Nyjer Morgan has been sent to the minors to make room for Michael Bourn.
Insight: Morgan played well in his nine games, batting .348 with four runs, four RBI and three stolen bases. He figures to get another chance at the major league level before the year is over.
Michael Bourn, CF4/15/2014 3:33:00 PM
Description: The Indians have activated center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) from the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: Bourn's injury may have him running conservatively when he returns, though he did steal a base in his rehab stint. The 31-year-old had just 23 steals on 35 attempts in 2013 after averaging 51 steals and 63 attempts per season from 2008-12.
David Murphy, RFHot4/12/2014 10:10:00 PM
Description: Indians right fielder David Murphy (2-5) collected four RBI Saturday in a 12-6 victory over the White Sox.
Insight: David Murphy the power-hitter? So far the 32-year-old is on pace for 27 jacks and 135 RBI. His career-high is only 74 RBI so fantasy owners shouldn't get too excited. We'll see if Murphy can stay hot Sunday in the series finale.
Nyjer Morgan, CF4/12/2014 10:54:00 AM
Description: Indians outfielder Nyjer Morgan is back in the lineup for Saturday.
Insight: Morgan is batting .389 this season through his first eight games, but hasn't played since Wednesday.
Michael Brantley, LF4/11/2014 10:04:00 AM
Description: Michael Brantley could get a day off on Friday as he's just 2-for-16 (.125) with eight strikeouts versus White Sox ace Chris Sale.
Insight: Brantley is off to a decent start, batting .289 through the first 10 games which is 21 points higher than his career April average.
Michael Bourn, CF4/10/2014 8:00:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) is likely to return on April 15, though he hasn't been ruled out for April 13. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Bourn's injury may have him running conservatively when he returns, which isn't good for a player whose main contributions to fantasy teams are stolen bases and runs. The 31-year-old had just 23 steals on 35 attempts in 2013 after averaging 51 steals and 63 attempts per season from 2008-12.
Jason Kipnis, 2B4/10/2014 10:14:00 AM
Description: Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is a .385 hitter with a 1.246 OPS versus White Sox left-hander John Danks.
Insight: Kipnis is struggling so far, batting just .194, but has a favorable matchup.
Trevor Bauer, SP4/9/2014 8:10:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer struck out eight men in six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, but he took a loss against the Padres.
Insight: The 2011 No. 3 overall pick's stock has fallen due to control issues after he went 12-2 with a 2.42 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 130 1/3 innings in the minors in 2012. He had 73 walks, 106 strikeouts and a 4.15 ERA in 121 1/3 innings with Triple-A Columbus last season and owns a 5.03 ERA and a 36/31 K/BB in 39 1/3 big league innings. Still, Wednesday's results are encouraging, especially because Bauer averaged nearly 95 mph with his fastball. He may be recalled if Carlos Carrasco continues to struggle.
Zach McAllister, SP4/9/2014 8:08:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Zach McAllister tossed a gem Wednesday against the Padres.
Insight: McAllister allowed five hits, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter over 7 2/3 innings to win his first game of the season. He put 10 men on base and gave up three earned runs in four innings at Oakland in his first start of the year and had a 1.36 WHIP over the last two seasons.
David Murphy, RFHot4/8/2014 10:24:00 PM
Description: Indians right fielder David Murphy followed up his four-hit game Sunday with two more hits, including his first homer with Cleveland, in three at-bats Tuesday against the Padres.
Insight: Murphy also had a double and scored three runs. The Rangers tasked Murphy, who hit .304 with 15 homers in 2012, with replacing Josh Hamilton last season, but he batted .220 with 13 homers and a .656 OPS. He's trying to bounce back in Cleveland.
David Murphy, RF4/6/2014 7:02:00 PM
Description: Indians right fielder David Murphy swatted four hits Sunday in a loss to Minnesota.
Insight: Murphy had just two hits in 14 at bats this season prior to Sunday. It's the veteran's first four-hit game since June 27, 2012.
Jason Kipnis, 2B4/4/2014 9:01:00 PM
Description: The Indians have signed second baseman Jason Kipnis to a six-year, $52.5 million contract extension.
Insight: He's a bargain compared to Dustin Pedroia (eight years, $110 million) and Robinson Cano (ten years, $240 million). Through four games, Kipnis is hitting .188 with no homers or RBI.
Michael Bourn, CF4/3/2014 3:08:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) starts a rehab assignment on Thursday at Triple-A Columbus.
Insight: Bourne could return as soon as Saturday. We worry that this injury could have him running conservatively at the start of 2014.The 31-year-old averaged 51.4 steals 2008-12, but swiped just 23 bags last season and his fantasy value is tied to his speed.
Michael Bourn, CF4/2/2014 11:18:00 AM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) began the season on the disabled list, but could be back on the first day he's eligible - April 5.
Insight: We worry that this injury could have him running conservatively at the start of 2014.The 31-year-old averaged 51.4 steals 2008-12, but swiped just 23 bags last season and his fantasy value is tied to his speed.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS4/2/2014 10:02:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is hitless in nine at-bats against Oakland starter Scott Kazmir. He's struck out three times.
Insight: This is the first of a day-night doubleheader after Tuesday night's rainout. Cabrera owners are hoping for a return to 2011 production levels (.273, 87 runs, 25 HR, 92 RBI, .792 OPS), but its more likely that what we have seen the past two seasons is what we will see this year as well (.257, 68 runs, 15 HR, 66 RBI, .732 OPS).
Zach McAllister, SP4/1/2014 9:00:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Zach McAllister still will start Wednesday against the Athletics despite Tuesday's rainout. SOURCE: Jim Berdysz, indiansbaseballinsider.com
Insight: Corey Kluber will start the first game of the doubleheader against Scott Kazmir. The Athletics pushed Wednesday's scheduled starter Jesse Chavez to Thursday and will call someone up to start Wednesday night against McAllister. McAllister went 15-17 with a 3.99 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP and a 7.3 K/9 the last two seasons.
Justin Masterson, SP4/1/2014 7:54:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Justin Masterson held the Athletics scoreless in seven innings on Opening Day Monday night.
Insight: Masterson gave up four hits, walked one and struck out four. The right-hander had his best season in 2013, going 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP and 195 strikeouts in 193 innings. He had a 7.1 K/9 in his first five seasons, but he turned his slider into a dominant out pitch last year.
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS4/1/2014 10:27:00 AM
Description: Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is hitless in nine at-bats against Oakland starter Scott Kazmir. He's struck out three times.
Insight: Cabrera owners are hoping for a return to 2011 production levels (.273, 87 runs, 25 HR, 92 RBI, .792 OPS), but its more likely that what we have seen the past two seasons is what we will see this year as well (.257, 68 runs, 15 HR, 66 RBI, .732 OPS). Avoid him on Tuesday.
Yan Gomes, C3/30/2014 11:13:00 AM
Description: Indians catcher Yan Gomes has agreed to a six-year, $23 million contract extension. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: Among catchers with 200+ at bats last season, only Detroit's Brayan Pena produced a higher batting average than Gomes (.294). He won't hit free agency until 2019.
Carlos Carrasco, SP3/26/2014 11:33:00 AM
Description: Carlos Carrasco won the competition for the final spot in the Indians' rotation, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Insight: The 27-year-old Carrasco throws hard but has a 5.29 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in 238 1/3 big league innings. He also has a 5.17 ERA and a 1.72 WHIP this spring, compared to 3.54 and 1.18 for Josh Tomlin. The Indians want to control Tomlin's innings after he had Tommy John surgery in August 2012, so he'll start out in Triple-A along with Trevor Bauer.
Yan Gomes, C3/25/2014 5:30:00 PM
Description: Carlos Santana was named the Indians' starting third baseman on Tuesday, which means Yan Gomes will be the everyday catcher.
Insight: Gomes hit .294 wth 11 homers in just 322 plate appearances last season. His average will come down after he posted a .342 BABIP last year despite a 17.8 percent line-drive rate, but he should hit 20+ homers. Gomes is also a much better defensive catcher than Santana, which will help Cleveland's pitching staff.
Carlos Santana, 3B3/25/2014 1:50:00 PM
Description: Carlos Santana will be Cleveland's starting third baseman in 2014. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: Santana (.268, 20 HR, 74 RBI) played third base in winter ball and a little during spring training. The 27-year-old should also see time at catcher and first base this season.
Nyjer Morgan, CF3/24/2014 2:15:00 PM
Description: The Indians will keep outfielder Nyjer Morgan on the team when they head north, according to beat reporter Jordan Bastian.
Insight: Morgan won't start, but can back up all three outfield position. He stole 42 bases in 2009, but hasn't topped 15 the past two seasons due to lack of at-bats which should be the problem in 2014 as well. He has very little fantasy value.
Michael Bourn, CF3/24/2014 2:06:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) will begin the season on the disabled list, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com
Insight: The 31-year-old averaged 51.4 steals 2008-12 but swiped just 23 bags last season. We worry that this injury could have him running conservatively at the start of 2014.
Michael Bourn, CF3/17/2014 2:00:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn, who left Sunday's game with tightness in his left hamstring, will miss at least one week and should be considered questionable for Opening Day, according to beat writer Paul Hoynes.
Insight: The 31-year-old averaged 51.4 steals and 63.6 attempts per season from 2008-12, but he swiped just 23 bags on 35 attempts in 130 games last year and this hamstring injury could have him running conservatively at the start of the 2014 season.
Michael Bourn, CF3/16/2014 5:26:00 PM
Description: Indians center fielder Michael Bourn left Sunday's game with mild tightness in his left hamstring.
Insight: The Indians tweeted that Bourn was removed for precautionary reasons and will be reevaluated Monday. The 31-year-old averaged 51.4 steals and 63.6 attempts per season from 2008-12, but he swiped just 23 bags on 35 attempts in 130 games last year.
Jason Giambi, DH3/13/2014 2:39:00 PM
Description: Cleveland DH Jason Giambi has suffered a non-displaced rib fracture and will miss 3-4 weeks, according to the team
Insight: It's pretty incredible that Giambi is still playing at age 43 but things heal slowly at that age. Though he did smack nine homers in 2013, we doubt he'll get enough at bats to warrant fantasy consideration this season.
Carlos Santana, DH3/7/2014 3:25:00 PM
Description: Indians DH Carlos Santana has not looked comfortable at third base during Cactus League games, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: Santana played third base in winter ball and the Indians are trying him out there during spring training. The 27-year-old should get work in at catcher, first base and third base this season though he's slated to be the team's primary DH. His eligibility at catcher is what makes him valuable to fantasy owners.
Trevor Bauer, SP3/4/2014 10:19:00 PM
Description: Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer's fastball sat around 93-96 mph while topping out at 98 during his two-inning Cactus League outing Sunday, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Bauer has averaged 92.4 mph in eight big league appearances. The 2011 No. 3 overall pick's stock has fallen due to control issues after he went 12-2 with a 2.42 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 130 1/3 innings in the minors in 2012. He had 73 walks, 106 strikeouts and a 4.15 ERA in 121 1/3 innings with Triple-A Columbus last season and owns a 5.67 ERA and a 28/29 K/BB in 33 1/3 big league innings.
Carlos Santana, C2/17/2014 9:40:00 PM
Description: Indians catcher Carlos Santana "looked comfortable" at third base during his infield session Monday, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Insight: Santana played third base in winter ball and the Indians are trying him out there during spring training. The 27-year-old may end up carrying eligibility at catcher, first base and third base, but his numbers work best at catcher.
Aaron Harang, SP2/15/2014 2:08:00 PM
Description: Righthander Aaron Harang will attend spring training with the Indians. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: It's anyone's guess whether he'll make the team. If he does, we wouldn't count on him as a fantasy option after posting a 5.40 ERA in 26 starts in 2013.
Michael Brantley, LF2/10/2014 9:34:00 PM
Description: Michael Brantley's new deal will be worth $25 million over the next four seasons. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: It could potentially be a five-year, $36 million deal if the team picks up his option for 2018. The new contract shows that the Indians have confidence in him but it shouldn't change Bradley's value heading into the 2014 fantasy campaign.
Michael Brantley, LF2/10/2014 8:56:00 PM
Description: Left fielder Michael Brantley is close to signing a four-year extension with Cleveland. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Brantley wasn't going to be a free agent until 2017 so the Indians must really want to keep him. The 26-year-old is good at many things but not great at any of them. We wouldn't pay more than a dollar or two for Brantley (.284, 10 HR, 73 RBI, 17 SB in 2013) in an auction draft.
Bryan LaHair, 1B2/5/2014 9:07:00 PM
Description: Former Cubs first baseman Bryan LaHair will join the Indians for spring training.
Insight: LaHair made the NL All-Star team in 2012 but was phased out after Anthony Rizzo emerged as the Cubs' best power hitter. Even if he ends up making the 25-man roster, we don't anticipate LaHair having any fantasy value in 2014.
Carlos Santana, C1/18/2014 2:10:00 PM
Description: Indians catcher Carlos Santana has been working at third base, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes.
Insight: Santana was expected to get most of his at-bats at DH this season allowing Yan Gomes to get the majority of the time behind the plate. If Santana adds 3B eligibility to DH/C he'll be even more valuable.
Luis Valbuena, SS1/17/2014 10:10:00 AM
Description: The Chicago Cubs and third baseman Luis Valbuena agreed to a one-year deal.
Insight: Valbuena is expected to be the opening day starter, but he'll need to improve on .218, 12 HR, 37 RBI if he wants to keep it all season long. The Cubs has Donnie Murphy and ryan Roberts who can both play the hot corner. None of the three figure to be a viable fantasy option.
Nyjer Morgan, CF1/14/2014 7:43:00 PM
Description: The Indians have reached terms on a minor league deal with former Nationals and Brewers outfielder Nyjer Morgan. SOURCE: Jerry Crasnick, ESPN
Insight: Morgan last played in the major leagues in 2012 when he hit .239 with three homers and 16 RBI in 122 games for Milwaukee. He's not going to be an everyday player in Cleveland.
Jeff Francoeur, RF1/7/2014 5:09:00 PM
Description: Outfielder Jeff Francoeur signed a minor league deal with Cleveland on Monday. SOURCE: Jerry Crasnick, ESPN
Insight: He'll try to make the team out of spring training. 2013 was arguably Francoeur's worst season yet. In 81 combined games for the Giants and Royals, he tallied just three homers and 17 RBI. He hit 59 points below his career average (.263).
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP12/31/2013 7:43:00 PM
Description: Free agent starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez is hoping to land a four-year deal worth between $17 and 20 million annually this offseason. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Jimenez definitely improved his stock by having an excellent season in 2013 (13-9, 3.30 ERA) but nobody's going to pay him $20 million a year. Any team that signs him will have to give up a draft pick to do so after Jimenez rejected the Indians' $14 million qualifying offer back in November.
John Axford, RP12/16/2013 9:25:00 PM
Description: Righthander John Axford has signed on to be the Indians' new ninth inning man. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: The former Brewers closer is set to make $4.5 million in 2014. He split last season between Milwaukee and St. Louis, earning a 4.04 ERA in 75 appearances. His 19 holds were a career-high.
Shaun Marcum, SP12/16/2013 9:19:00 PM
Description: Former Brewers and Mets righthander Shaun Marcum has agreed to a minor league deal with Cleveland. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: Marcum was dreadful last season, finishing with a 1-10 record in 14 appearances. We wouldn't rule out a bounceback year in 2014, however, as Marcum owns a respectable 3.88 ERA in 188 career appearances.
Grady Sizemore, CF12/10/2013 9:48:00 AM
Description: Free agent outfielder Grady Sizemore says he wants to play in 2014, according to Indians beat writer Paul Hoynes.
Insight: Sizemore hasn't played in the big leagues since 2011 and hasn't been a fantasy star since 2008. He'll have to show me something before I get excited about a comeback.
David Murphy, LF11/19/2013 10:30:00 PM
Description: David Murphy is headed to Cleveland. The former Texas outfielder has agreed to a two-year deal worth $10 million. SOURCE: Dallas Morning News
Insight: It's not an ideal landing spot as Murphy seems destined for a platoon with the equally inconsistent Drew Stubbs in right field. Murphy batted just .220 across 142 games last season, his lowest average in eight seasons in MLB.
Scott Kazmir, SP11/13/2013 9:57:00 PM
Description: The Orioles have expressed an interest in free agent lefthander Scott Kazmir. SOURCE: Nick Cafardo, Boston Globe
Insight: It seems like he's been around a long time but Kazmir is still only 29. He's 2-3 with a 4.86 ERA in seven career starts at Camden Yards.
Scott Kazmir, SP11/9/2013 9:43:00 PM
Description: Free agent starter Scott Kazmir seems unlikely to re-sign with Cleveland. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: Kazmir wants at least a two-year contract and the Indians aren't willing to commit beyond a one-year deal. 2013 marked the lefthander's first ten-win season since 2009.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP11/9/2013 9:30:00 PM
Description: Righthander Ubaldo Jimenez is a longhsot to return to Cleveland next season. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: The Indians are trying to keep him but if the money is better elsewhere, don't be surprised if Jimenez bolts. Jimenez's 3.30 ERA this year was his lowest since 2010.
Chris Perez, RP10/31/2013 9:28:00 PM
Description: The Indians released Chris Perez on Thursday. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian. MLB.com
Insight: It was only a matter of time. Perez was a disaster in the second half (5.60 ERA in 27 games) and was eventually demoted to a setup role late in the season. Perez throws upper 90s cheese but often has trouble locating. It shouldn't take the reliever too long to find a new team.
Jason Giambi, DH10/31/2013 9:17:00 PM
Description: Cleveland DH Jason Giambi will return for another season. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: It's pretty incredible that Giambi is still playing at age 42. Though he did smack nine homers in 2013, we doubt he'll get enough at bats to warrant fantasy consideration next season.
Justin Masterson, SP10/2/2013 6:36:00 PM
Description: Cleveland manager Terry Francona indicated that righthander Justin Masterson may be used as the team's closer during the postseason. SOURCE: Indians.com
Insight: Masterson was the team's best starter for much of the season but an oblique injury has forced him to take on a lighter workload. He certainly has the velocity to pull it off and Masterson does have experience as a reliever (62 lifetime appearances out of the bullpen). Former closer Chris Perez did make the Indians' postseason roster but it's clear that Francona doesn't trust him as a ninth inning option any longer.
Michael Bourn, CF10/2/2013 6:29:00 PM
Description: As expected, Michael Bourn will lead off and play center field Wednesday against the Rays.
Insight: Bourn was in and out of the lineup last week because of a calf injury. The speedy outfielder has only appeared in three career postseason games with his lone hit coming as a member of the Atlanta Braves back in 2012.
Zach McAllister, SP10/2/2013 10:00:00 AM
Description: Indians starter Zach McAllister is questionable for his next scheduled start.
Insight: McAllister went 9-9 this season with a decent ERA (3.75), but an inflated WHIP due to a mediocre K-BB ratio. His fantasy value was minimal this season.
Jason Giambi, 1B10/2/2013 9:54:00 AM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi is questionable for Wednesday's American League Wild Card game against Tampa Bay.
Insight: In a part-time role as a pinch-hitter and player coach, Giambi has hit .183 with nine homers and 31 RBI in 186 at-bats.
Michael Bourn, CF10/2/2013 9:52:00 AM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn (calf) is probable for Wednesday's American League Wild Card game against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Bourn's statistics dipped in every category this season (.263, 6 HR, 50 RBI, 75 R, 23 SB, .676 OPS). He's also just 1-for-7 (.143) against Rays right-hander Alex Cobb.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SPHot9/29/2013 6:50:00 PM
Description: Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez dominated the Twins Sunday at Target Field.
Insight: The Indians righthander delivered 13 punchouts in 6 2/3 innings. Jimenez has been sensational over the last month, collecting four wins and a 1.09 ERA in 41 1/3 September innings. The Indians will face the winner of tomorrow's tiebreaker game between Texas and Tampa Bay Wednesday in Cleveland. The winner of that will play the Red Sox in the ALDS.
Danny Salazar, SP9/29/2013 2:45:00 PM
Description: Cleveland manager Terry Francona indicated that rookie hurler Danny Salazar would pitch Monday if the Indians have to play Texas or Tampa Bay in a Wild Card tiebreaker game. SOURCE: Paul Hoynes, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: If the Indians win today, they won't need to play on Monday. Salazar has posted a 2.52 ERA in five September appearances.
Scott Kazmir, SPHot9/29/2013 12:56:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Scott Kazmir struck out 11 batters in six innings Saturday against the Twins and 21 in his final two starts this year.
Insight: Kazmir's K/BB ratio in September was an impeccable 43/4, and he went 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA and 162 strikeouts in 158 innings during his comeback season. He is expected to begin discussions on a new contract with Cleveland soon.
Michael Bourn, CF9/28/2013 11:17:00 AM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn (wrist) will return to action Saturday against the Twins.
Insight: Bourn has missed three straight games with a sprained right wrist but he is back in the leadoff spot in the lineup as the Indians try to lock up a Wild Card berth with a win and a Texas loss Saturday.
Carlos Santana, C9/28/2013 9:42:00 AM
Description: Indians Carlos Santana went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two walks, three runs and one RBI Friday against the Twins.
Insight: Santana has shown strong plate discipline, walking 90-plus times in three straight seasons, but he hasn't emerged as a 30-homer, 100-RBI threat. He has hit 19 homers with 71 RBI and .269/.379/.451 splits this season, and fantasy owners shouldn't pay for any more than that next season, when the catcher will be 28 years old.
Jason Kipnis, 2B9/28/2013 9:37:00 AM
Description: Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, two RBI and two runs Friday night at Minnesota.
Insight: Kipnis finished the first half red hot and homered in his first two games after the All-Star break, but he has hit .248 with just two homers and a .670 OPS over his last 60 games. This is the second straight year he has tailed off after the All-Star break, so fantasy owners will should be prepared to sell high if he has another strong first half next season.
Chris Perez, RPCold9/27/2013 6:38:00 PM
Description: The Indians will use a committee at closer for the final three games.
Insight: Chris Perez has allowed seven hits (3 HR) and six earned runs over his last two appearances and the team cannot afford to let any games slip away at this point.
Michael Bourn, CF9/27/2013 5:41:00 PM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn (wrist) is not in the lineup Friday.
Insight: It's his third straight absence due to a right wrist sprain. The outfielder has a disappointing 23 steals this season to go with a .260 average, .668 OPS and 73 runs in 128 games.
Michael Bourn, CF9/27/2013 9:25:00 AM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn didn't play Thursday versus the Twins, his second consecutive game watching from the sidelines due to a sore wrist.
Insight: Bourn has put together a decent season in Cleveland batting .260 with 73 runs scored and 23 SB.
Michael Bourn, CF9/26/2013 7:15:00 PM
Description: Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn won't play Thursday versus the Twins.
Insight: Bourn's wrist is still a bit sore. If he's feeling up to it, he could make a pinch-hitting appearance later on.
Michael Bourn, CF9/25/2013 8:17:00 PM
Description: Michael Bourn's X-rays came back negative. SOURCE: Cleveland Plain Dealer
Insight: The Indians center fielder is dealing with a bruised wrist. He should be available to pinch-hit tonight against the White Sox.
Michael Brantley, LF9/24/2013 10:45:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley had three hits, including his 10th homer, two RBI, two runs and a stolen base Tuesday against the White Sox.
Insight: Brantley has provided fantasy owners with a .283 average and set career highs with 10 homers, 70 RBI, 65 runs and 16 steals.
Justin Masterson, SP9/24/2013 9:48:00 PM
Description: Indians pitcher Justin Masterson (oblique) has been cleared to return as a reliever, according to MLB.com.
Insight: Masterson (14-10, 3.52 ERA) was removed from his start on Sept. 2 due to a strained left oblique and hasn't pitched since. Fantasy owners hoping he would make one more start this season can drop him.
Scott Kazmir, SP9/21/2013 9:42:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Scott Kazmir's comeback season has had its rocky moments but he has thrown 152 innings, struck out 151 batters, won nine games and posted a 4.14 ERA.
Insight: Kazmir threw just 1 2/3 innings in 2011 and missed all of 2012 due to injury before the Indians gave him a shot this year. In his latest start Saturday against Houston, Kazmir struck out 10 batters, walked one and gave up four hits over seven shutout innings.
Danny Salazar, SP9/20/2013 6:58:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Danny Salazar will make his last regular season start Tuesday against the White Sox, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Insight: The Indians have been very protective of the 23-year-old, limiting him to an average of 77 pitches and 4.7 innings over his last seven starts even though he has posted a 3.00 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 33 innings during that span. His postseason role (if Cleveland makes it) is undecided.
Justin Masterson, SP9/20/2013 6:46:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Justin Masterson (oblique) threw off a mound Friday for the first time since suffering his injury earlier this month. SOURCE: Jordan Bastian, MLB.com
Insight: Masterson (14-10, 3.52 ERA) hasn't been ruled out for a return this season, but he'll only make one start if he does come back.
Jason Giambi, 1B9/18/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Indians DH Jason Giambi doesn't get many starts these days, but he could get one against Wednesday's starter Bruce Chen as he's a career .375 hitter with four homers in 16 at-bats.
Insight: In a part-time role as a pinch-hitter and player coach, Giambi has hit .181 with eight homers and 29 RBI in 177 at-bats.
Ryan Raburn, RF9/15/2013 10:42:00 AM
Description: Indians utility man Ryan Raburn is 6-for-16 (.375) with three doubles, two homers and three walks against White Sox ace Chris Sale.
Insight: As a part-timer, Raburn has hit .285 with 18 doubles, 16 homers, 53 RBI and a .983 OPS on 240 plate appearances. He needs one more homer to set a new career high.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SPHot9/14/2013 10:35:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez turned in another gem Saturday against the White Sox (8 1/3 IP, 8 H, 1 ER).
Insight: That's three wins in a row for Jimenez, who has now recorded double-digit strikeouts in three of his last five starts. He's got another layup coming Thursday against the last place Astros.
Jason Kubel, LF9/11/2013 10:35:00 AM
Description: Cleveland OF/DH Jason Kubel is a career .450 hitter (9-for-20) against Royals right-hander James Shields.
Insight: It was just a season ago that Kubel posted 30 HR and 90 RBI for the D'backs, but his production has been non-existent this season (.220, 5 HR, 32 RBI).

Insight: It was just a season ago that Kubel posted 30 HR and 90 RBI for the D'backs, but his production has been non-existent this season (.223, 5 HR, 32 RBI). The Indians' other DH option, Jason Giambi, is even worse (.095 vs. Santana).

Corey Kluber, SP9/7/2013 10:01:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Corey Kluber beat the Mets in his return to the rotation from a sprained middle finger.

Michael Brantley, LF9/7/2013 3:15:00 PM
Description: Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Brantley has put together a solid season (.278, 8 HR, 59 RBI, 60 runs, 15 SB). Not starter value, but worthy of a backup role on many fantasy rosters.

Description: Cleveland lefthander Scott Kazmir notched a season-high 12 strikeouts Friday against the Mets.
Insight: And he did it in only six innings of work. Friday was Kazmir's first win in over a month (August 4th against Miami). His next start will be against Kansas City.

Description: The Indians should know soon whether or not Justin Masterson will be returning before the end of the season. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: Masterson (14-10, 3.52 ERA) strained his oblique Monday against the Orioles. The Indians are fighting for their playoff lives (three back in the Wild Card, six and a half behind in the division) and having Masterson back sooner rather than later would give them a huge boost.

Description: Indians righthander Corey Kluber will make his return from the DL on Saturday instead of Friday as previously reported. SOURCE: Akron Beacon Journal
Insight: Kluber (7-5, 3.54 ERA) has missed the last month with a sprained middle finger on his pitching hand. Cleveland skipper Terry Francona said Kluber will be limited to about 80 pitches in his first start back. That translates to around five innings of work.
Ubaldo Jimenez, SPHot9/3/2013 10:04:00 PM
Description: Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez blanked the Orioles on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks to win Tuesday's game.
Insight: Jimenez is scary to own but there's no doubting his results this season. He's 10-9 with a 3.79 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 147 1/3 innings, including 10-7 with a 2.97 ERA in his last 130 1/3 innings after starting out 0-2 with a 10.06 ERA. Description: Indians starter Justin Masterson will not make his next start due to a strained oblique, according to Nick Camino of WTAM 1100 Newsradio Cleveland.

In 189 1/3 innings, he has a 3.52 ERA and a career-high 188 strikeouts. Masterson's K/9 was 7.00 or lower in each of the last three seasons.
