Stars ship Morrow to Penguins
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - The Dallas Stars parted ways with another franchise player on Sunday, sending forward and captain Brenden Morrow to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Pens also received a 2013 third-round draft pick in exchange for defenseman Joe Morrow and a fifth-round selection in 2013.
"Brenden Morrow has represented everything we could ever ask for in a Dallas Star, giving his heart and soul to this franchise. On behalf of the entire Dallas Stars organization, we wish Brenden nothing but the best going forward and thank him sincerely for his years of service," said Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk.
"That being said, we had a great opportunity to acquire a young, top-end defenseman in Joe Morrow and we are delighted to add him to our organization. We identified Joe as an outstanding prospect and a target for acquisition if ever available, and we feel he can solidify our blue line for the foreseeable future."
Brenden Morrow, who had to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate the deal, posted just six goals and 11 points in 29 games for the Stars this season, his 13th with the franchise.
He departs for the Steel City having recorded 243 goals and 528 points in 835 regular-season games, adding 17 scores and 25 assists over 78 playoff appearances for Dallas.
The 34-year-old served as Stars team captain since 2006.
Brenden Morrow won Gold for his native Canada in the 1999 World Junior Championship. the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and that year's World Championships, as well as the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
His addition provides depth and additional veteran presence to a Pittsburgh team riding an 11-game win streak and which boasts the best record in the Eastern Conference at 24-8-0.
Joe Morrow was a first-round selection by the Penguins in the 2011 draft. He totaled four goals and 15 points in 57 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the American Hockey League this year.
