LenDale White at one time had everything going for him.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Running back LenDale White is an example of how quickly fortunes can change in both the real world and the fantasy world.
On Friday, the Seattle Seahawks announced that they were releasing the former 1,000-yard rusher. It was a little over a month since the Seahawks had traded with the Tennessee Titans for White and it seemed to all that he was in line to be the team's starting running back.
But now, just 30 days later, he was unconditionally released amidst rumors of poor workout habits, immaturity and violating the NFL's drug policy.
"It became apparent at this time that LenDale was not ready to be a member of the Seattle Seahawks," said GM John Schneider when announcing White's release.
Here was a player who at one time had everything going for him. A star at USC, White ran for 1,108 yards and seven scores in 2007. In 2008, he had to share the backfield chores with a rookie by the name of Chris Johnson, but still rushed for 773 yards and reached the endzone an amazing 15 times.
In 2009, however, thing turned sour for White as Johnson took over most of the running in Tennessee and put together an astounding 2,006 yards rushing. That left White "out in the cold."
So it was no surprise that White was traded and landing in Seattle with his old USC head coach Pete Carroll should have been a good thing. In a crowded backfield with Julius Jones, Justin Forsett and Leon Washington, it was thought by many that White was going to be the starter or at least the No.1 goal line option.
So much so, that his current ADP (Average Draft Position) is 78, meaning in early mock drafts he was going in the seventh round and was the first Seattle running back off the board. That put him in the middle of other "shared backfield" situation runners like Marion Barber (ADP 72), Thomas Jones (ADP 77) and Steve Slaton (ADP 80).
Then yesterday the stunning announcement of his release.
White still might find a team willing to wait out any possible suspension and get a role as a goal line option, but as a fantasy option, he'll likely have no value in 2010.
