Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Back in September, Jacksonville's Maurice Jones-Drew was a top-five draft choice in just about every fantasy league. In fact, he had a RapidDraft ADP of 1.84, meaning he was likely the No. 2 player off the board.
There were plenty of good reasons for him being picked that high.
Jones-Drew was coming off his best season. In 2009, he ran for a career-high 1,391 yards, scored a career-high 16 touchdowns (15 on the ground) and caught 53 passes for an additional 374 yards.
But things haven't gone exactly as planned for the Jaguars offense and for fantasy owners of "MJD."
Offensively, the Jaguars rank 25th out of 32 teams -- producing 311.8 ypg and 20.6 ppg. And for a team with one of the league's premier running backs, while they are ranked eighth in rushing yards (130.4 ypg) they have scored just three touchdowns on the ground -- one by Jones-Drew.
Last Sunday, Jacksonville put up five touchdowns on the Dallas Cowboys...and Jones-Drew didn't participate any of them.
The news doesn't get any better for fantasy owners because while MJD did have 27 carries for 135 yards last week, history tells us that he is approaching his "peak" for the year.
Since 2007, Jones-Drew has posted only one 100-yard rushing game from Week 11 through the end of the season. In two of the three seasons, he has seen his rushing yards-per-game drop by over 20 yards. When you add in his current workload, which is on pace to be even more than his 312 rushes in 2009, it figures that this trend of tiring late in the season will continue.
I'm not saying it's time to have a "fire sale" or that you should take the first offer which comes along, but I am saying it's time to look for someone who doesn't know his past history of fading during the fantasy playoffs.
