Even in a tight game against Detroit, Chester Taylor still ended up with double digit points.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
What do Chester Taylor, John Carlson and Le'Ron McClain have in common? They were all free agent pickups within the last 12 days who helped me upset the No.3-ranked team in the opening round of my fantasy playoffs.
Yes, I coached my way into the semi-finals.
I certainly didn't have the better talent. He had a monster team, headed by a pair of great wide receivers - Reggie Wayne and Anquan Boldin. His backfield wasn't too shabby either, with super rookie Matt Forte and Miami's Ronnie Brown running the ball and Donovan McNabb behind center.
But I upset him anyway - as a 21-point underdog!
When I originally drafted my team, I thought it would be carried by my running backs tandem. I paid a high price (it was a keeper auction draft) for Marion Barber III and Ryan Grant, both of whom have been disappointing, when compared to their 2007 output.
Despite that, I made the playoffs after obtaining Kurt Warner to play at quarterback, since my original plan (Plan A), which called for Cleveland's Derek Anderson and TE Kellen Winslow to key my passing game, bombed. When that strategy fell apart I traded future star running back Darren McFadden for Warner (Plan B) and my team began to play better.
Still, I have struggled because Barber and Grant have been so inconsistent.
Then Barber got hurt on Thanksgiving and I needed to go to a "Plan C."
I picked up McClain (12 points on Sunday night) during that week and dumped Winslow for Carlson on Tuesday. I also noted that the Minnesota Vikings were in Detroit for a "battle" with the inept Lions defense (ranked 32nd against the run) and figured that Taylor would get plenty of opportunities to carry the ball. Of course, I expected Minnesota to crush Detroit and Taylor would play most of the second half, but even in a tight 20-16 game he got me a touchdown and double-digit points. Carlson did his job too, catching eight balls for 69 yards and one score.
When Wayne and Boldin couldn't combine for 20 points, the handwriting was on the wall. I ended up winning the matchup by 14 points and head to a semi-finals tilt against the No.2 seed.
It will be another tough assignment, but I'm ready and waiting...and checking the waiver wire for more firepower.
