Marvin Harrison might have some value in Minnesota if he could hook up as the possession receiver for Brett Favre.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
The latest rumor started by who knows who, maybe Marvin Harrison's agent, is that the Baltimore Ravens are looking to replace recently retired aging receiver Derrick Mason with aging receiver Marvin Harrison.
It's the latest in rumors which first had Harrison talking with Tampa Bay and then Minnesota.
While all three teams could definitely use receiving help and certainly could use a "vintage" version of Harrison, the "current" model doesn't seem likely to help any of the teams nor fantasy owners.
Harrison in his prime was a fantasy machine, posting great season after great season. From 2000 - 2006, Harrison averaged 101 receptions a year for 1,365 yards and almost 13 touchdowns. Those are superstar numbers in any season.
But the "current" version which would arrive at camp in 2009 is a shadow of that guy. The eight-time Pro-Bowler has regressed over the past two seasons because of two bad knees. Yes, he still has the great hands, maybe the best I've ever seen in that department, but he can't get open as easily as he could.
Over the past TWO seasons, Harrison has just 80 catches for 883 yards and six scores. And that's with one of the best quarterbacks of all time behind center - Peyton Manning.
In Baltimore he'd have second-year QB Joe Flacco. He also wouldn't have Reggie Wayne on the other side of the field drawing extra coverage, it would be Mark Clayton. And with the Ravens' "run-first" attitude, he'd see so few opportunities, that I can't see him having much fantasy value in Baltimore. Or Tampa Bay.
Harrison might have some value in Minnesota if he could hook up as the possession receiver for Brett Favre while Bernard Berrian makes the defense cover him on deep pass patterns. But I'm not really excited about Harrison's fantasy worthiness in 2009 and you shouldn't be either.
