Braylon Edwards is the inaugural recipient of the TSN Most Disappointing Fantasy Player Award.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
It's always fun when all your fantasy players perform up to expectations, or above them, but that's not the world in which most of us live.
There is injury, lackluster effort, bad play calling, bad weather and many other reasons why our rosters didn't carry us to the fantasy championship. I have broken down my analysis into two lists - those who's season were destroyed by injury and those players who just didn't play up to expectations.
In some cases, like Randy Moss for example, expectations after his 1,493-yard, 23-touchdown season of 2007 were simply too ridiculously high for anyone to achieve, particularly when the best quarterback in the game had his season ended in the first quarter of the first game. Despite playing the entire season with a backup quarterback, Moss still finished 12th among wide receivers, but if you ask any fantasy player who picked him in the first round he will tell you Moss had a disappointing year.
Just as Moss' "real" world and fantasy world don't necessarily agree, Ben Roethlisberger didn't perform up to expectations during the regular season, but when the "money" was on the line, "Big Ben" took his team to a second Super Bowl victory. Reggie Bush made the list as well, but not because he didn't play well. At the time he was injured, he was leading all running backs in scoring.
As for "winning" the TSN Most Disappointing Fantasy Player of 2008, that award goes to..........Braylon Edwards of the Cleveland Browns.
Coming off a stunning 2007 in which Edwards caught 80 balls for 1,289 yards and 16 TDs, he was expected to be a top-five wide receiver. Edwards began the season with a two-catch, 14-yard effort against the Dallas Cowboys and never recovered. He finished the season with 55 receptions for 873 yards and three touchdowns. Except for one Monday night against the Super Bowl champion New York Giants when he teased us with a 154-yard, one TD night, Edwards was never a help for any fantasy team, unless "dropped balls" was a category.
