The second best fantasy tight end is someone you may not expect.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
We all know that Dallas Clark, tight end extraordinaire and favorite target of Peyton Manning is having a great start to his 2009 season. But then we all expected good things from him after he put together a solid 2008 - 77 receptions, 848 yards, six TDs.
This piece, however, is about the man who is sitting No.2 at the tight end position after three weeks of play (Jason Witten still has to play Monday night and with a monster week could possibly pass him).
The name might not be familiar to you since he was the 15th tight end selected on Draft Day. Let me introduce him to you, his name is Brent Celek and he plays tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles.
On Draft Day when Witten was selected first among tight ends and 53rd overall, and Clark was the fourth pick behind Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates, Celek the afterthought, was picked 182nd. That's in the 16th round in your basic 12- team league.
Had you been wise enough to make that pick at No.182, you would have the second-best tight end after three weeks with 50 fantasy points.
Celek has been with the Eagles since 2007, but was stuck behind an Andy Reid favorite - L.J. Smith. But Smith spent most of 2008 injured and was finally let go in the offseason. Celek had a huge 2008 playoffs for the Eagles, grabbing 19 balls over three games, including three touchdowns.
The University of Cincinnati alum and fifth-round draft choice of the Eagles in 2007, has always been known as a good pass catcher, but a weak blocker. He has improved enough at the latter to get by, though he'll never be known as a "road grader."
Celek has now posted two consecutive 100-yard receiving days and is just three points behind Clark for the position lead.
If he's on your roster, I hope you are playing him. If he's buried on someone else's roster, perhaps it's time you made an offer to get his services.
