Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Plaxico Burress could have fantasy value in 2011, though the more likely scenario is that he'll work his way back into playing shape, both physically and mentally, this season and be an effective No.3 receiver the following year.
The Philadelphia Eagles and Michael Vick seem to have set forth the correct strategy for dealing with this kind of situation - a player who was away from the game for a long time due to legal troubles.
In signing Vick to a two-year deal in 2009, the Eagles allowed the former Atlanta Falcons starting quarterback time to adapt. Time to learn a new offensive system and time to allow the fans and media to get used to the idea of having him on the team.
He played sparingly in 2009, primarily as a "wildcat formation" quarterback. In fact, Vick threw just 13 times in 12 games that year while rushing the ball 24 times for 95 yards and two scores.
It was in his second season that the Eagles came to depend on Vick after getting rid of former All-Pro quarterback Donovan McNabb and seeing Kevin Kolb get injured.
In Burress, a team will be getting a receiver who cracked 1,000 yards in four of nine seasons and scored 55 touchdowns. Though he'll be 34 in August, there's no reason with his 6'5" frame he couldn't be a "red zone" specialist this season.
We're talking 25-30 catches for 300 yards and four-to-five touchdowns. That's a nice addition to a team in real life, a significant threat in the red zone, but not much help for fantasy owners.
Which means he'll have little value in 2011 for single-year leagues.
The following season, Burress could have significantly more value, though he'll never be the 1,000-yard receiver he was in his prime. After his second summer camp (hopefully) Burress could become a reliable No.2 or No.3 receiver depending upon where he signs.
Many rumors currently have the Eagles showing interest in Burress.
If those articles turn into reality, then Burress' fantasy value will not increase much in the second year because the Eagles already have two talented wideouts in DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. They also have a solid third- down receiver in Jason Avant.
If Burress wishes to maximize his opportunity to post big numbers, Philadelphia is not the place to be. On the other hand, the Eagles have shown teams how it's done.
