Robin Lopez has been playing under the radar while twin brother Brook Lopez garnered all the accolades.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Just as Marc Gasol has lived in the shadow of older brother Pau Gasol (at least until this season), so too has Robin Lopez been playing under the radar while twin brother Brook Lopez garnered all the accolades. Perhaps not for much longer.
Robin and Brook Lopez both attended Stanford University, but it was Brook who was named to the All Pac-10 Freshman Team. Meanwhile, Robin averaged just 7.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg. Brook averaged 19.3 ppg and 8.2 rpg the following year, Robin 10.2 ppg and 5.7 rpg.
Both declared for the 2008 NBA draft, Brook going to the New Jersey Nets with the 10th pick and Robin to Phoenix with the 15th selection.
In his rookie season, Brook averaged 13.0 ppg, 8.1 rpg and was named All-Rookie Team. Robin was not - after seeing just 10 minutes of court time per game and averaging 3.2 ppg and 2.0 rpg.
But things have begun to pick up for Robin. He was already seeing more playing time and then on January 18th, he became the Suns' starting center, with Amare Stoudemire moving to power forward.
As a starter, he almost become "fantasy-worthy." Since mid-January and the lineup change, Robin has averaged more than 26 minutes-per-game along with 13.1 ppg and 6.5 rpg. Better still, he's had a double-double in his last two outings including a very impressive 30-point, 12-rebound effort on Friday night against the Los Angeles Clippers. He's also scored 10-or-more points in 10 of his last 12 games.
Obviously, he's not going to put up 30 and 12 every night, but he's getting better every month. And with the prospect of Stoudemire's free agency on the horizon, Lopez might see a lot more of the ball next year. So while he might be borderline valuable in 2009-10, he'll like be a bargain to pick up today in keeper leagues.
The good news is that Robin Lopez is owned in just 38% of all leagues, so is available for just a waiver selection.
