Brett Gardner can steal bases as well as anyone in baseball.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Your draft has taken place and we're now a couple of games into the new season. If you are dissatisfied with how your draft went in regards to the stolen base category, there are some immediate possibilities for improvement.
Below are six players with fantasy ownership of less than 70% which likely are available for a simple waiver wire pickup.
Rajai Davis, OF, Oakland
Davis has a chance to help you out in more than just the stolen base category. He batted a solid .305 for Oakland last year with 65 runs and 41 stolen bases in just 390 at-bats. If he can stay healthy, he should get 500+ at-bats in 2010 as the A's starting rightfielder. He's owned in 69% of all leagues.
Juan Pierre, OF, Chicago White Sox
When Manny Ramirez was suspended last season, Pierre put on quite a display as his replacement. Pierre finished the season batting .308 with 57 runs scored and 30 stolen bases in just 380 at-bats. As the White Sox' leadoff hitter he should be able to help you in runs, SB and average. Pierre is owned in under half of all leagues - 49%.
Everth Cabrera, SS, San Diego
He's the everyday shortstop in San Diego, yet gets no respect for his solid performance in 2009. He stole 25 bases in just 377 at-bats last year. A mediocre batting average (.255), batting eighth and a weak-hitting lineup around him limit his upside. Still, given 500 at-bats, he could be worth 35 stolen bases. He's owned in 25% of all leagues.
Scott Podsednik, OF, Kansas City
Podsednik batted over .300 and scored 75 runs to go along with 30 SB last season. He leads off for the Royals "light-hitting" lineup, but should still be able to repeat those statistics in 2010. He's owned in 22% of all leagues.
Brett Gardner, OF, New York Yankees
Gardner can steal bases as well as anyone in baseball, his problem is staying in the lineup. On a team as loaded as the Yankees, he'll only get to play everyday for as long as he hits. He can add runs and stolen bases to your roster, but a .724 OPS as he had in 2009 won't help your cause.
Dexter Fowler, OF, Colorado
Fowler is young and quick, but at the moment is stuck in a platoon situation with Seth Smith. Fowler got 433 at-bats in 2009 and stole 27 bases. Unfortunately for Fowler, Smith is a solid hitter (.293, 15 HR, 55 RBI in 335 at-bats) and it won't be easy to end this platoon situation. Fowler is owned in 17% of all leagues.
