David Ortiz slugged seven home runs in June while knocking in 18 and hitting .320.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
As quickly as David Ortiz's slump took shape in April and May, that's how rapidly the Boston Red Sox slugger has returned to form in June and July.
Ortiz was being written off by many, including this writer, but he is proving to everyone that he still has plenty of fantasy value.
After hitting .230 in April with zero HRs and 12 RBIs and .143 in May with one HR and just six RBIs, Ortiz has found his hitting stroke. He slugged seven home runs in June while knocking in 18 and hitting .320 and in the first part of July as added three more homers. His batting average for the season still looks ugly (.224), but his power numbers are returning to form.
Ortiz will never be the overpowering slugger he was back in 2005-06 (101 HRs and 285 RBIs over the two year period), but he's beginning to bring you the production you expected when you drafted him in the late fifth or early sixth round (Average Draft Position of 49).
The good news is that July has always been "Big Papi's" best month, both in average and OPS, so numbers should continue to pile up.
If Ortiz is available in your league, and his ownership level did sink below 85% during his slump, you should consider picking him up immediately.
