Mark Reynolds has improved his batting average each month, from .263 in April, to .271 in May and .286 last month.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Mark Reynolds leads all major league third basemen in home runs with 22. Read that again. The leader isn't Evan Longoria, Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Zimmerman, or Chipper Jones - the third-year Arizona slugger leads them all in hitting the ball out of the park. Yet there is almost no chance that Reynolds will be in St. Louis for the 2009 All-Star game.
Reynolds also has his batting average up to a respectable .270 - up from last year's .239 average. He's second in RBIs with 57, fourth in stolen bases at 13, first in slugging percentage (.561) and third in OPS (.917) among all third basemen National or American League.
That's a lot of production for a hitter who had a preseason Average Draft Position (ADP) of just 181 and was the 20th third basemen selected on Draft Day.
Reynolds has improved his batting average each month, from .263 in April, to .271 in May and .286 last month. He's still striking out too much, 107 times in 289 at-bats, but when he puts the ball in play, he's become more successful (.350 as compared to .329 last year).
Over his "career" (2 1/2 years), Reynolds has struggled during the month of July, so it will be important to keep an eye on him over the next few weeks. But if he keeps going the way he has been (.286 with seven HRs and 20 RBIs in the last 21 days), this could be the best year ever for the man who was a 2004 16th-round pick.
Based on purely offensive statistics, Reynolds should be in the running for a spot on the NL All-Star team since his numbers compare very well against the likes of David Wright, Jones and Zimmerman. Unfortunately, at last check, he wasn't getting any respect from All-Star fan voting. He's not even in the top-five in votes.
Too bad, because we fantasy owners know he's had a very good first half of the season. Reynolds' ownership is up to 88% and he's being started by 73% of them. At least fantasy players know a good value when they see one.
