Garrett Jones batted a stunning .310 with 10 home runs and 17 RBIs in July.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
If I was to tell you that "Jones" has really been hitting the ball well, who would you think I am talking about?
Adam Jones, Chipper Jones, maybe even Andruw Jones?
No, this article is about Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Garrett Jones.
Garrett Jones was called up to the "big" club on June 30th just after the Pirates traded Eric Hinske to the New York Yankees.
After going 0-for-4 in his first game, Jones went on a tear, hitting safely in 17 of the next 20 games. For July he batted a stunning .310 with 10 home runs, 17 RBIs and an OPS of 1.061.
Through the first three weeks of August, his numbers have returned to a more realistic "neighborhood," although he's still hitting .298 for the season. His home run rate has dropped from one every 10 at-bats in July to one every 17 at bats in August, but he's still scoring runs - 16 in July and 11 through August 21st. He's also stealing bases, seven in the 43 games he's played, making him a solid multi-category contributor.
Jones was originally selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 14th round of the 1999 draft. They released him in 2002 and he was signed by the Minnesota Twins in May of that year. He got a "cup of coffee" with the Twins in 2007 but hit just .208 in 77 at bats.
The Pirates signed him as a free agent in December and sent him to Indianapolis where he batted .307 with 12 HR and 49 RBI in 277 at-bats. Then they brought him up and started playing him and the results have been very good.
With the Pirates in the midst of a nine-game home stand and then trips to hitter's ball parks in Milwaukee and Cincinnati, Jones, who is batting .317 on the road this season, should continue to produce.
Of course, none of this would do you any good if he was already on someone's roster, but the good news is that he's only owned in about 40% of all leagues.
