Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) -
Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is 1B to Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning's 1A when it comes to the fantasy football MVP this season.
But Charles will spend more time modeling Nike NFL apparel on the sideline than carrying the football in Week 17.
The Chiefs are the only team in the NFL whose playoff destiny is already determined. They have no upward or downward mobility from the No. 5 seed in the AFC, regardless of what happens Sunday.
When he was coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, current Kansas City boss Andy Reid's team had nothing to play for in Week 17 of 2004, 2006 and 2010.
He didn't play his starters at all in 2004 and 2010, and he pulled them in 2006 when a Dallas loss helped the Eagles clinch the NFC East five minutes into Philadelphia's game against Atlanta.
As much as he's done for your fantasy team this season, you should not be starting Charles Sunday at San Diego.
Backup Knile Davis, however, could have a standout game.
Davis is a 227-pound physical freak who finished second among running backs in both 40-yard-dash time (4.37 seconds) and bench-press repetitions (225 pounds 31 times) at the NFL Combine.
A history of injuries and a substandard 2012 season prevented him from being a top prospect in the 2013 NFL Draft, but the Chiefs still selected him as a compensatory pick in the third round, sixth among the 23 running backs drafted.
While Davis is Charles' direct backup, the Chiefs don't run a timeshare in their backfield and have no need to play it safe with Davis in Week 17. Simply put, he's not important to Kansas City's 2013 playoff run.
With Charles being pulled after a couple of series, Davis should see a huge workload. Charles averaged 21.9 touches per game in the first 15 games this season, and he also scored 14 of his 19 touchdowns from inside the 10-yard line.
Chances are high Davis sees at least 15 touches and puts the ball in the end zone from a short distance.
