Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
Many of fantasy's top-drafted second basemen are struggling and shortstop is always a black hole, but there's good news for the owners floundering with the likes of Jedd Gyorko and J.J. Hardy.
There are four widely available middle-infield options who are both heating up and, as former first-round draft picks, possess a lot of upside.
If you're frustrated with the production your middle infielders have provided so far, give one or two of the four players below a shot.
Kolten Wong, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - Wong batted just .225 with zero home runs and a .544 OPS in his first 20 games this season to earn a ticket to Triple-A Memphis, but he quickly made it a round trip. In 15 games with Memphis, Wong hit .344 with two home runs, five steals, four walks and six strikeouts, and he has gone 6-for-15 with two doubles, three RBI, two steals, four runs, one walk and one strikeout since he returned to the big leagues.
Nick Franklin, 2B/SS, Seattle Mariners - Franklin, the 2009 27th-overall pick, lost the starting shortstop job to Brad Miller in the spring, but Miller proved to be part of the Mike Moustakas camp of players who destroy spring training pitchers and then can't even hit their weight in April. Franklin batted .376 with seven home runs, 26 RBI, a 23/23 K/BB and six steals in 30 games with Triple-A Tacoma and replaced Corey Hart on the active roster Tuesday. With Hart out four-to-six weeks and Miller batting .156, look for Franklin to have an everyday spot in the lineup as a utility player.
Grant Green, 2B/LF, Los Angeles Angels - Green was selected 14 picks ahead of Franklin in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics and has hit .309 with an .826 OPS in 507 career minor league games. However, he hasn't received an extended shot in the big leagues until 2014. Green has been starting in left field for the Angels since May 3 and batted .357 with one home run, four RBI, three runs and one steal in 45 plate appearances.
Chris Owings, SS, Arizona Diamondbacks - Owings, another 2009 first-rounder, beat out Didi Gregorius for the starting shortstop job in spring training and has been heating up in the desert. Arizona manager Kirk Gibson moved Owings to second in the order in front of star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt three games ago and Owings has gone 6-for-12 (.500) with a double, a triple, a homer, three RBI, five runs and two steals in that stretch.
