Flames' Wideman, Monahan out with injuries
Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - The Calgary Flames will be without two more key players for an extended period after defenseman Dennis Wideman and rookie center Sean Monahan sustained injuries during Wednesday's 3-2 loss to Chicago.
Wideman fractured his hand during the contest and is expected to be sidelined between 6-to-8 weeks. Monahan, who scored his ninth goal of the season early in the third period, was later diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his foot and is listed as week-to-week.
The Flames were already missing captain Mark Giordano (broken ankle) along with forwards Curtis Glencross (knee) and T.J. Galiardi (back spasms).
Wideman leads Calgary in time on ice (26:14 per game) and is tied for second on the club with 10 assists. The veteran blueliner has added a pair of goals in his 24 games this season.
The 19-year-old Monahan, the sixth overall selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, is second among all NHL rookies in goals (9) and points (15) while playing in all 24 of the Flames' games.
Both Wideman and Monahan were placed on injured reserve Thursday, with the Flames recalling forward Paul Bryon from Abbotsford of the AHL in a corresponding move.
