NFL Game Summary - San Diego at Oakland

(Sunday, October 10th)

Final Score: Oakland 35, San Diego 27

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Michael Bush scored the go-ahead touchdown with 3:39 remaining and Tyvon Branch sealed the victory with a 64-yard fumble return for a score, as the Oakland Raiders snapped a 13-game losing streak to the San Diego Chargers with a 35-27 win.

Bush carried the ball 26 times for 104 yards for Oakland (2-3), which beat San Diego for the first time since September 28, 2003.

Jason Campbell completed 13-of-18 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown in relief of Bruce Gradkowski, who left the game with a bruised right shoulder. Zach Miller hauled in six passes for 62 yards and a score.

"A tremendous win. A great, great team effort. It's good to stop the streak, but as I said to (the team), 'Let's not make this a 24-hour feel-good party, let's make this who we are becoming,'" said Raiders head coach Tom Cable. "That's where we need to go. That's a heck of a team, and it's been a nemesis for a number of years now."

Oakland also became the 10th team since the merger to block two punts in the same game. The last club with two blocked punts in one game was Chicago on December 23, 2007, against Green Bay's Jon Ryan.

Philip Rivers connected on 27-of-42 passes for 431 yards and two touchdowns for the Chargers (2-3), who were coming off a 41-10 victory over Arizona last weekend.

"We came in here and dug ourselves a hole," said Chargers head coach Norv Turner. "I thought we did a good job throughout the second quarter of getting out of it. It was a back-and-forth game. They made a number of plays. They were able to drive the ball and control the clock in the second half."

Malcom Floyd had a career day, catching eight passes for 213 yards and a score. Antonio Gates hauled in five passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Trailing 27-22, Oakland started from its own 27 with 11:55 to play in the game. Faced with a 3rd-and-11 from the San Diego 48, Miller caught a 13-yard pass. Four plays later, Campbell threw a 12-yard pass to Brandon Myers on 4th-and-1. Bush finished the impressive 14-play drive with a three-yard TD run. An unsuccessful two-point conversion had the Raiders in front, 28-27, with 3:39 remaining.

The Chargers moved the ball to the Oakland 33, but faced a 2nd-and-20 situation. Rivers was hit on the arm by Michael Huff and the football came loose. Branch recovered the ball and raced 64 yards the other way for a TD. The play was upheld upon review, giving the Raiders a 35-27 lead with under a minute to play.

The game was over when Rivers threw an incomplete pass on fourth down from his own 42.

The Raiders blocked two punts in the first five minutes of the game to jump out to a 12-0 lead. After the Chargers went three-and-out on the opening possession of the game, Mike Scifres came on to punt the ball away from the 19-yard line. Rock Cartwright blocked the punt and the ball rolled out of the end zone for a safety.

Sebastian Janikowski made a 50-yard field goal following the free kick to give the Raiders a 5-0 edge just three minutes into the contest.

San Diego went three-and-out on offense again. This time Myers blocked Scifres' punt. Hiram Eugene recovered the football and ran five yards into the end zone for a 12-0 advantage with 10:33 left in the first quarter.

The Chargers were able to move the ball to the Oakland one-yard line on their next possession. Mike Tolbert, though, fumbled the football. The Raiders failed to take advantage of the turnover.

Rivers then fumbled the ball at the Oakland 19-yard line. Gradkowski was hit hard by Shaun Phillips on the first play after the turnover and lost the football. The call was changed to an incomplete pass following a review. Gradkowski went to the locker room following the hit.

The visitors put together an eight-play, 77-yard drive early in the second quarter. Gates capped the march with a 19-yard TD catch.

After the Raiders went three-and-out, San Diego scored a touchdown to take the lead. A running into the kicker penalty on fourth down gave the Chargers a fresh set of downs at their own 42. A few plays later, Tolbert rumbled into the end zone from four yards out to give the visitors a 14-12 edge with 4:49 remaining.

The score was 17-15 after Janikowski and Nate Kaeding traded field goals before the half.

Nick Miller's 46-yard punt return early in the third period set up Oakland near midfield. Faced with a 4th-and-2 from the 38, Bush got just one yard.

On the second play of San Diego's ensuing drive, Rivers and Floyd hooked up on a 41-yard score to make it a 24-15 game with 7:38 left.

The Raiders responded with an impressive 12-play, 97-yard drive. Oakland converted four third downs on the march. Louis Murphy highlighted things with a 58-yard catch-and-run. Campbell finished the drive with a one-yard TD pass to Zach Miller to cut the deficit to 24-22 with 1:12 remaining.

San Diego bridged the third and fourth frames with a nine-play drive that Kaeding capped with a 34-yard field goal for a 27-22 lead with 12 minutes to play in the game.
