Detroit Pistons 2014 Draft Preview
Draft picks: 2nd round (38th overall)
By Jim Brighters, NBA Editor
(SportsNetwork.com) - Stan Van Gundy's first draft at the helm of the Detroit Pistons should be relatively uneventful.
That's because they got the worst possible end of the stick on lottery night.
The Pistons were in position to draft eighth based on last season's disappointing record. They owed the Charlotte Hornets a top-eight protected first-rounder from a horrible trade swapping dead-weight contracts in Ben Gordon and Corey Maggette.
Then, when the Cleveland Cavaliers defied the odds and moved up to No. 1, the Pistons fell a spot and the ninth pick in the draft went to the Hornets.
So a team that finished 24 games under .500 has no real good chance of improving through the draft. Their cap situation, despite Josh Smith's horrendous contract last year, isn't horrendous, although they'll have to decide on the future of Greg Monroe.
Detroit has some money to play with, so they could take on a contract and maybe get a pick as well.
With just the 38th choice in the draft, the Pistons probably won't walk out with much, but there's definitely going to be some talent in the second round. The Pistons could use help at shooting guard if last year's first-rounder, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, doesn't emerge.
Plus, if Monroe bolts, Van Gundy could easily shift Smith to the power forward, Kyle Singler to the small forward and then, again, the two-guard spot becomes a concern.
