Description: The Angels have sent struggling reliever Ernesto Frieri to Pittsburgh. SOURCE: Bob Nightengale, USA Today
Insight: Meanwhile, the Pirates are giving up right-hander Jason Grilli. Frieri (0-3, 6.39 ERA) probably won't have a chance to close for the Pirates unless Mark Melancon (1-2, 2.41 ERA) gets hurt.
6/19/2014 7:46:00 PM
Description: The Angels will use a committee at closer, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Ernesto Frieri allowed his eighth homer of the year, a walk-off grand slam to Nick Swisher, Thursday at Cleveland and has given up six runs on eight hits in his last 1 1/3. Joe Smith, Cam Bedrosian and Frieri will pitch depending on the matchups.
6/15/2014 9:17:00 AM
Description: Angels closer Ernesto Frieri came into a 5-1 game in the ninth inning Saturday against the Braves and gave up five hits and four runs without getting an out.
Insight: Frieri had settled in over his previous 19 appearances, posting a 1.86 ERA and nine saves after giving up 14 hits, nine runs and five homers in his first 8 2/3 innings, but he had nothing Saturday. He's a low-tier closing option because of these types of implosions.
5/9/2014 10:50:00 PM
Description: After Angels reliever Joe Smith blew a one-run lead in the eighth inning Friday night, Ernesto Frieri picked up the save in the ninth.
Insight: The Angels took the lead in the top of the ninth on a Raul Ibanez sacrifice fly. Frieri appears to have regained the closer role after losing it to Smith in late April. He's still not someone who inspires confidence because he has allowed six homers in 15 1/3 innings this year, but the right-hander has given up just one hit and no walks in his last 6 2/3 innings.
5/7/2014 1:33:00 PM
Description: Angels reliever Ernesto Frieri gave up a go-ahead homer to Yankees second baseman Brian Roberts Tuesday night.
Insight: Frieri took the loss and may have blown his chance to reclaim the closer job. The right-hander had thrown 4 2/3 scoreless innings without allowing a hit or walk since his demotion and picked up a save Monday with Joe Smith unavailable due to illness. Smith also missed Tuesday's game with tightness in his right side, so the Angels' closer role is up in the air right now. Frieri has given up six homers in 14 1/3 innings this season.
5/6/2014 1:52:00 PM
Description: With Angels closer Joe Smith unavailable Monday night due to a stomach ailment, manager Mike Scioscia went back to Ernesto Frieri.
Insight: Frieri struck out two in a 1-2-3 inning to get his third save of the season. The right-hander hasn't allowed a hit, walk or run in 4 2/3 innings since the Angels removed him from the closer role following several implosions. Smith saved three games and hasn't allowed a run since the switch, but he may end up losing the job due to his stomach issue Monday.
Cold4/25/2014 6:25:00 PM
Description: Ernesto Frieri is out as Angels closer, according to Alden Gonzalez of mlb.com. Joe Smith will get a chance to run with the job.
Insight: Frieri has a 9.35 ERA and has given up an astounding five home runs in 8 2/3 innings. He'll pitch in low-leverage situations to try to work out what coach Mike Scioscia referred to as a release-point issue.
Cold4/23/2014 10:57:00 PM
Description: Angels closer Ernesto Frieri blew a 4-1 lead Wednesday at Washington, but manager Mike Scioscia said he's sticking with him, according to Alden Gonzalez of mlb.com.
Insight: Frieri allowed four runs on three hits with a walk in 1/3 of an inning. He has a 9.35 ERA and has given up an astounding five home runs in 8 2/3 innings. Joe Smith is probably next in line for saves, though Fernando Salas has some experience in the ninth inning.
3/11/2014 3:47:00 PM
Description: Angels manager Mike Scioscia doesn't want to use his closer, Ernesto Frieri, in four-out (or more) saves this season after he led the league with seven last summer. SOURCE: Orange County Register.
Insight: Frieri posted 37 saves with a 3.80 ERA, 1.238 WHIP and 98 Ks in 68 2/3 IP. However, if Scoiscia keeps to this limiter it might cost him a couple of save in 2014.
Cold8/10/2013 8:26:00 PM
Description: After allowing 12 earned runs on 15 hits in his last 4 2/3 innings, Ernesto Frieri has lost his job as Angels closer, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Insight: Frieri, whose ERA has risen from 2.76 to 4.79 in that span, will pitch in low leverage situations until he figures things out. Dane De La Rosa is expected to serve as the closer for the time being.
Cold8/8/2013 10:31:00 AM
Description: After several implosions in a row, Los Angeles righthander Ernesto Frieri might be in danger of losing his job as the team's closer.
Insight: Frieri has had a nightmare second half, compiling a 23.14 ERA over his last seven outings. Even if he does turn things around, the Angels aren't winning often enough for him to be a viable fantasy option.
7/31/2013 3:20:00 PM
Description: Angels closer Ernesto Frieri has blown two straight saves and allowed eight earned runs on nine hits over his last 2 2/3 innings, and Mike Scioscia sounds about ready to go with a committee in the ninth inning, according to MLB.com.
Insight: Scioscia admitted that Frieri's confidence "might be a little nicked right now" and said that he'll try to use matchups more in the ninth going forward. "Whatever decision they make, I have to accept that," Frieri said. "We need to win. We can't be losing games late. Hopefully I get through this and they give me their confidence again." There's no obvious option for saves behind Frieri in the Angels bullpen.
7/29/2013 10:23:00 PM
Description: Angels closer Ernesto Frieri blew his third save of the season Monday at Texas.
Insight: Frieri (4.06 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) gave up three hits, including two homers, to blow a 3-2 lead and spoil Jered Weaver's strong start. This comes after he gave up five runs in a loss on July 23. Frieri has 25 saves but has regressed from last season.
3/19/2013 1:50:00 PM
Description: With closer Ryan Madson still struggling to get healthy after Tommy John surgery, Angels reliever Ernesto Frieri could steal the closer role for most of 2013 if he gets off to a good start.
Insight: Madson does not figure to be ready in April and Frieri could win the job if he starts off well. Frieri has not pitched well in spring training (.844 ERA, 1.69 WHIP) so this situation is still fluid.
9/21/2012 9:01:00 PM
Description: Angels reliever Ernesto Frieri is no longer the team's primary closer after allowing four runs over his last two appearances, both losses. According to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he will "match up" with Frieri, Scott Downs and Kevin Jepsen.
Insight: In other words, Scioscia is going to use the dreaded closer-by-committee. While Frieri still has an impressive 2.56 ERA on the season, he has posted a 5.82 ERA in the second half.
5/23/2012 9:14:00 PM
Description: Ernesto Frieri picked up the first save of his career on Wednesday. Frieri hasn't allowed a hit while striking out an absurd 19 batters in 8 2/3 innings since he was acquired by the Angels in early May.
Insight: Unfortunately, Wednesday really didn't do much to tip Mike Scioscia's hand, as Frieri pitched in the 11th inning after Scott Downs had already been used in a tie game. Frieri was warming up prior to the bottom of the ninth in a 4-2 game against San Diego on May 18, after Downs was used in the eighth, but the Angels scored three runs in the top of the ninth so Frieri didn't record a save. Based on Frieri's closer potential and overall dominance this season, he's a must-own in most formats.
5/7/2012 5:10:00 PM
Description: Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Ernesto Frieri could see save chances with the Angels.
Insight: Scott Downs hurt his knee last night, and replacement Latroy Hawkins fractured his pinkie on a comebacker. Hawkins has been placed on the disabled list, so if Downs is also forced to miss time, Frieri would be the next guy in line. One thing is certain: the Angels are taking an "anybody-but-Walden" approach right now.
