Insight: Despite the lack of any spring training work, McCann should be given a shot in all fantasy lineups on Monday. He had shoulder surgery in the offseason after playing through an injury all year and struggling at the plate. He's always been one of the top hitting catchers in fantasy, though he may split time with Evan Gattis this year.

Description: Atlanta catcher Brian McCann's wrist injury has been described as minor, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. He should begin catching in extended spring training games Thursday or Friday.
Insight: McCann is trying to come back from the shoulder surgery he had last October, and the there was some concern that his recovery would be delayed by a wrist injury. The six-time All-Star catcher is coming off his worst season -- .230, 20 homers, 67 RBIs, .698 OPS -- but we believe the ailing shoulder was the culprit, not a loss of skills. Fantasy owners who stay patient should ultimately be rewarded.

Insight: McCann had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. If all goes well the catcher could be ready to play again in late April. McCann is coming off his worst MLB season -- he hit .230 with a .698 OPS in 121 games -- but perhaps we can pin it on the shoulder injury.

10/6/2012 1:58:00 PM
Description: Atlanta GM Frank Wren doesn't think Brian McCann will need surgery on his injured shoulder during the offseason. McCann told reporters earlier in the week that surgery was a possibility and that he could be sidelined for up to five months. SOURCE: Mark Bowman, MLB.com.
Insight: McCann walked in a pinch-hitting appearance Friday night against St. Louis. McCann didn't look like himself this season, hitting almost 50 points below his career average and missing the All-Star game for the first time since 2005. Certainly the shoulder issues contributed to McCann's struggles in 2012.

Description: Atlanta catcher Brian McCann is out for Sunday's game versus New York. He's dealing with knee and shoulder soreness.
Insight: It's natural for catchers to be a little banged up after a long season. Now that the Braves have clinched a playoff berth, it makes sense for them to rest their starting catcher so he'll be closer to 100 percent when they really need him.
